Abstract

The seismic performance of existing RC frame buildings seismically retrofitted by base isolation is examined. Two different types of isolation systems are considered, i.e.: rubber-based and friction-based isolation systems, respectively. Two different performance levels are examined, namely: Global collapse prevention and Usability preventing damage. Seismic performance is assessed by multi-stripe nonlinear time-history analysis, considering earthquake intensity levels with return period ranging from 10 to 100000 years. Results point out that seismic isolation works effectively in limiting damage well beyond the design limit state level while it shows a limited margin with respect to collapse beyond the design limit state level. Abstract

This paper presents an insight on the seismic response and seismic risk of base-isolated structures performed within the RINTC project, considering different configurations of rubber-based isolation systems. This represents an in-depth revision of past works due to the adoption of more robust and accurate isolator model. Four archetype 6-storeys RC frame buildings are examined, representing both new designed isolated buildings and existing buildings retrofitted with seismic isolation, differing in age of construction and location (the cities of L'Aquila (central Italy) and Naples (southern Italy)). All the isolation systems are designed in accordance with the current Italian Seismic Code. Seismic performance assessment is performed by multi-stripe nonlinear time history analysis. The annual failure rates for two different performance levels, namely Global Collapse and Usability Preventing Damage, are computed. The results point out that all isolation systems work effectively in limiting damage while they show a quite low margin with respect to collapse, regardless of the dominant failure mode, which is governed by the more fragile component among isolation system and superstructure. The annual failure rates derived for base-isolated buildings are critically reviewed and then compared with those obtained for similar new designed fixed-base RC buildings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

26. Assessment of autonomic response in 6–12-month-old babies during the interaction with robot and avatar by means of thermal infrared imaging

Abstract

ABSTRACTSince birth, infants have been immersed in a social environment, often surrounded by artificial-intelligent-agents (AIAs). However, there is a paucity of work on infants’ psychophysiological responses, and their related interest, when interacting with AIAs. Here, the infants’ psychophysiological responses during interactions with an embodied robot and a virtual human/avatar presented on a screen are investigated. The experimental paradigm consists of a robot producing socially communicative gestures to babies as compared to a virtual human producing socially communicative gestures and linguistic interactions, such as linguistic nursery rhymes in American Sign Language. Psychophysiological responses were measured using thermal infrared imaging technology that tracks changes in cutaneous temperature, enabling contactless investigation of human autonomic functions. Crucially, it permits first-time inferences about changes in infants’ psychological, attentional, and emotional engagement in relation to agents and events in the world around them. Thermal signals analysis revealed a statistically significant difference in the infants’ physiological response to robot and avatar interactions indicating important differences in each agent’s ability to engage infants. Understanding infants’ psychophysiological responses to AIAs during the first year of life, which is a crucial period for human learning, lays bare how AIAs may impact infants’ emotional, social, and language learning and higher cognitive growth.

Abstract

A new approach, referred to as the DEAL (Direct estimation of Expected Annual Losses) method, is developed to evaluate the Expected Annual Loss (EAL) of RC buildings using results of traditional structural analyses within a closed-form expression. The DEAL method is developed here to account for buildings that may be irregular in height or have differing occupancy types along their height. By comparing loss estimates for case study buildings with a rigorous application of the FEMA P58 framework, it is shown that the DEAL method performs better than the PAM approach recently proposed in Italy for seismic risk classification. Abstract

This book is the 2015-2017 report of the RINTC project, which has been a joint project of ReLUIS and EUCENTRE. The project intended to assess the seismic risk of code conforming structures in Italy. The results presented herein are, in some cases, different from those presented in the previous years and from preliminary literature derived from this project. This is because, as discussed in the body of text, hypotheses and choices have been continuously revised until consolidation; this process might be continuing even after the end of the project. In general, all computed annual structural failure rates closely reflect specific assumptions on design, modeling and analysis of the considered structures, and this has to be always taken into account when discussing the results of this project. The working group of the project (listed below) consists of the following six sub-groups, each of which explores (i) seismic risk assessment of code-conforming structures, designs, modelling, and analyses of (ii) masonry buildings, (iii) precast reinforced concrete buildings, (iv) reinforced concrete buildings, (v) steel buildings, and (vi) base-isolated reinforced concrete buildings. The book is structured such that each chapter presents the research results from the corresponding sub-group: Chapter (i) introduces the objectives and framework of the project; Chapters (ii) ? (vi) develop code-conforming designs, modelling and analyses of buildings for each structural type; Chapter (vii) concludes the study presenting the final results of the computed failure rates for the structures examined in the preceding chapters. Moreover, readers can refer to Appendices A to C for the details of the considerations on (a) usability-preventing limit state, (b) soil-structure interaction, and (c) model-uncertainty, respectively.

44. Bullying Perpetration and Victimization in Early Adolescence: Physiological Response to Social Exclusion

Abstract

The present study investigated the associations between bullying perpetration and victimization and physiological reactivity to social exclusion. The participants were 28 early adolescents (17 boys and 11 girls; Mage = 11.55; SD = 1.34). Bullying perpetration and victimization were assessed by peer nominations. To elicit social exclusion, participants were first included and then excluded in a laboratory paradigm (Cyberball). Physiological reactivity (i.e., nose tip temperature) was detected through thermal infrared imaging during the computer simulation. Nose temperature variations during inclusion and exclusion were compared between each other. Results showed increasing skin temperature during exclusion, compared to inclusion, for the whole sample, indicating that being excluded affected physiological reactivity. However, victimization was associated with higher skin temperature during exclusion, compared to bullying. The present findings suggest the importance of combining behavioral and contact-free physiological measures when studying bullying perpetration and victimization by peers.
