A five-story transportation terminal that will bring together San Francisco's nine mass transit systems that include bus and rail services will be built in the city. Three levels will be above ground and the canopy will feature a parkland and the whole facility will cover 1.4 million sq. ft.

The Sunset Reservoir in San Francisco has been retrofitted for it to be able to withstand an earthquake with a 975-year return period. The retrofit included the construction of 4,300 soil-cement columns to support an embankment dam and the addition of concrete moment-resisting frames.

Tunneling work has begun on what will be the United Kingdom's longest tunnel that will take traffic on highway A3. The tunnel's location under a nationally protected conservation area meant that the project had to take special care to protect the area's biodiversity such as leaving the stumps on felled trees to protect the dormice.

Trans Bay Cable, LLC is laying submarine transmission cables in San Francisco Bay to create a new transmission route between a power substation in Pittsburgh, California to San Francisco. The new system will use a high-voltage direct current technology that should reduce losses by around 22 to 24 MW. The technical details of the cable are discussed.

The Market Street Bridge, a 2,000-ft bridge crossing the Tennessee River at Chattanooga, has been reopened after two years of renovation. The original details of the bridge, constructed from 1914-1917, were replicated as closely as possible, while the mechanical systems of the bascule span were also overhauled.
