Malanotte-Rizzoli, Paola ... et. al.-- 76 pages, The importance of the Mediterranean Sea for the world ocean has long been recognized. First, the Mediterranean sea has a profound impact on the Atlantic ocean circulation and, consequently, on the global thermohaline conveyor belt. Maps of the 5 Mediterranean salty water tongue exiting from the Gibraltar strait at intermediate depths and spreading throughout the Atlantic interior are well known since the 1950s. Through direct pathways to the Atlantic polar regions or through indirect mixing processes, the salty Mediterranean water preconditions the deep convection cells of the polar Atlantic. There the North Atlantic Deep Water is formed which successively spreads throughout 10 the world ocean constituting the core of the global thermohaline circulation. Even more importantly, the Mediterranean Sea is a laboratory basin for the investigation of processes of global importance, being much more amenable to observational surveys because of its location in mid-latitude and its dimensions. Both the western and eastern basins in fact possess closed thermohaline circulations analogous to the 15 global conveyor belt. A unique upper layer open thermohaline cell connects the eastern to the western basin and, successively, to the north Atlantic through the Gibraltar strait. In it, the Atlantic water entering into Gibraltar in the surface layer, after travelling to the easternmost Levantine basin, is transformed into one of the saltiest water masses through air–sea heat and moisture fluxes. This is the salty water which, crossing the 20 entire basin in the opposite direction below the surface Atlantic water, finally exits from the Gibraltar strait at mid-depths. Both the western and eastern basins are endowed with deep/intermediate convection cells analogous to the polar Atlantic deep convection cells or to the intermediate mode water ones. Deep and intermediate water masses are therefore formed in differ25 ent sites of the entire basin. Because of their easily accessible locations, these convection cells are much more amenable to direct observational surveys and mooring arrays

The Mediterranean community represented in this paper is the result of more than 30 years of EU and nationally funded coordination, which has led to key contributions in science concepts and operational initiatives. Together with the establishment of operational services, the community has coordinated with universities, research centers, research infrastructures and private companies to implement advanced multi-platform and integrated observing and forecasting systems that facilitate the advancement of operational services, scientific achievements and mission-oriented innovation. Thus, the community can respond to societal challenges and stakeholders needs, developing a variety of fit-for-purpose services such as the Copernicus Marine Service. The combination of state-of-the-art observations and forecasting provides new opportunities for downstream services in response to the needs of the heavily populated Mediterranean coastal areas and to climate change. The challenge over the next decade is to sustain ocean observations within the research community, to monitor the variability at small scales, e.g., the mesoscale/submesoscale, to resolve the sub-basin/seasonal and inter-annual variability in the circulation, and thus establish the decadal variability, understand and correct the model-associated biases and to enhance model-data integration and ensemble forecasting for uncertainty estimation. Better knowledge and understanding of the level of Mediterranean variability will enable a subsequent evaluation of the impacts and mitigation of the effect of human activities and climate change on the biodiversity and the ecosystem, which will support environmental assessments and decisions. Further challenges include extending the science-based added-value products into societal relevant downstream services and engaging with communities to build initiatives that will contribute to the 2030 Agenda and more specifically to SDG14 and the UN's Decade of Ocean Science for sustainable development, by this contributing to bridge the science-policy gap. The Mediterranean observing and forecasting capacity was built on the basis of community best practices in monitoring and modeling, and can serve as a basis for the development of an integrated global ocean observing system. © Copyright © 2019 Tintoré, Pinardi.

This handbook collects the “best practices” in all phases of the system covering the entire infrastructural chain of data acquisition. It includes recommendations on how to produce high quality data aiming towards common methodologies and protocols within the FixO3 network. The Fixed point Open Ocean Observatory network (FixO3) seeks to integrate European open ocean fixed point observatories and to improve access to these key installations for the broader community. This network integrates open ocean moorings, surface buoys and deep cable observatories included in the ERIC EMSO. Unpublished Current

CIESM Workshop Monograph

This paper is the outcome of a workshop held in Rome in November 2011 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the POEM (Physical Oceanography of the Eastern Mediterranean) program. In the workshop discussions, a number of unresolved issues were identified for the physical and biogeochemical properties of the Mediterranean Sea as a whole, i.e., comprising the Western and Eastern sub-basins. Over the successive two years, the related ideas were discussed among the group of scientists who participated in the workshop and who have contributed to the writing of this paper. Three major topics were identified, each of them being the object of a section divided into a number of different sub-sections, each addressing a specific physical, chemical or biological issue: 1. Assessment of basin-wide physical/biochemical properties, of their variability and interactions. 2. Relative importance of external forcing functions (wind stress, heat/moisture fluxes, forcing through straits) vs. internal variability. 3. Shelf/deep sea interactions and exchanges of physical/biogeochemical properties and how they affect the sub-basin circulation and property distribution. Furthermore, a number of unresolved scientific/methodological issues were also identified and are reported in each sub-section after a short discussion of the present knowledge. They represent the collegial consensus of the scientists contributing to the paper. Naturally, the unresolved issues presented here constitute the choice of the authors and therefore they may not be exhaustive and/or complete. The overall goal is to stimulate a broader interdisciplinary discussion among the scientists of the Mediterranean oceanographic community, leading to enhanced collaborative efforts and exciting future discoveries. © Author(s) 2014.

Here we report on data from an oceanographic cruise on the German research vessel Meteor covering large parts of the Mediterranean Sea during spring of 2011. The main objectives of this cruise was to conduct measurements of physical, chemical and biological variables on a section across the Mediterranean Sea with the goal of producing a synoptic picture of the distribution of relevant physical and biogeochemical properties, in order to compare those to historic data sets. During the cruise, a comprehensive data set of relevant variables following the guide lines for repeat hydrography outlined by the GO-SHIP group (http://www.go-ship.org/) was collected. The measurements include; salinity and temperature (CTD), an over-determined carbonate system, inorganic nutrients, oxygen, transient tracers (CFC-12, SF6), Helium isotopes and tritium, and carbon isotopes. The cruise sampled all major basins of the Mediterranean Sea following roughly an east-to-west section from the coast of Lebanon to through the Strait of Gibraltar, and to the coast of Portugal. Also a south-to-north section from the Ionian Sea to the Adriatic Sea was carried out. Additionally, sampling in the Aegean, Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Seas were carried out. The sections roughly followed lines and positions that have been sampled previously during other programs, thus providing the opportunity for comparative investigations of the temporal development of various parameters.

The transport of water volume, salt and heat was calculated using continuous measurements of currents in the Otranto Strait for a one-year period in 1994-95. Temperature and salinity data sets, available from five hydrographic surveys, were used to obtain the seasonal temperature and salinity distributions at the Otranto transect. The Variational Inverse Method (VIM) was applied to reconstruct spatial distributions of the de- tided low-pass inflowing current component, salinity and temperature. Errors associated with estimates of transports are influenced by the data coverage: the higher the spatial resolution, the smaller the error and vice versa. Volume transport reaches a maximum in winter and spring and attains its minimum in summer. The obtained volume transport [similar to 1 Sv (10(6) m(3)s(-1))] should be considered a lower limit value since in that period the Adriatic was producing relatively small quantities of deep water due to the inflow of low-salinity (high buoyancy) waters and relatively mild winters. Comparing the mean advective heat input and the air-sea heat loss, the same order of magnitude between the two has been obtained which is satisfactory considering the possible errors of the two approaches. The relative importance of the eddy heat transport to the total transport is estimated to be only about 5% and thus it can be neglected in a first approximation. The salt transport estimates show a net input, suggesting a salinity increase during the period of study ; this was confirmed from the long-term salinity data in the Southern Adriatic.

The EuroSITES project was funded within the EU framework 7 to aid the convergence of the efforts of the 11 European-wide deep ocean observatories which formed its core. A major output of the project was envisaged as the synergies of the 13 partners working together to create a network providing sets of data in near-real-time, and in delayed-mode, which have been collected and processed in such a way as to be accessible to the wider scientific community, and comparable across time and site. The common data policy agreed by all the partners at the start of the project, and the evolution of a EuroSITES quality control manual which includes all the observatories practices, have formed the framework within which each data management group has delivered datasets which now carry the EuroSITES 'brand' as well as all the originators details. As a focal point for the, currently, 12 sites the EuroSITES data managers have worked as the European partner within the international OceanSITES project, developing the OceanSITES distribution standard, and studying the options for attaching additional metadata to data sets. The influence of EuroSITES as the European champion for the distribution of data in OceanSITES format will be an enduring legacy. The EuroSITES website (www.eurosites.info) provides a highly visible, and user accessible platform for the distribution of near-real time data from the observatories, as it becomes available. The data from the diverse sites are displayed in a consistent manner and the web pages form a coherent 'shop window' where potential data users can source data sets useful to their research, as well as a visual means of monitoring the health of the observatories. The sister site (outreach.eurosites.info) has been developed in parallel to be accessible to non-scientists. Working together EuroSITES has been able to develop a single conversion software package taking MEDATLAS and ODV ascii files and outputting the OceanSITES format. The sharing of knowledge in this and other developments ensures that costly duplication of effort is minimised. During the 3 years of the project the data management groups have interacted to share best practice, and although each is still independent and serves its own National Data Centre, the EuroSITES data inventory now carries data from all 13 sites, distributed in the OceanSITES v1.2 format. This format is NetCDF based, and carries within the file metadata. This describes the data in a consistent manner which achieves the first step towards interoperablility. The future of the funding of EuroSITES after April 2011 is not yet clear, but the project has achieved a remarkable degree of harmonisation already, and the relationships between the data management groups will undoubtedly continue as the cost benefits of resource and knowledge sharing become ever more important in the scientific arena.

In 1997 an inversion in the Ionian upper-layer circulation was documented and ascribed to a massive inflow of Aegean dense waters associated with the Eastern Mediterranean Transient (EMT) and not to the wind-stress (Borzelli et al., 2009). Here we generalize the concept hypothesizing that such inversions are possible even in the absence of the Aegean influence. Indeed, salinity and density data collected in the Southern Adriatic, the main source of the Eastern Mediterranean deep water, show decadal variations coherent with changes in the sea level height in the northern Ionian. Scaling considerations suggest that the redistribution of Ionian water masses, resulting from changes in the thermohaline properties of waters entering the basin, can sustain inversions of the upper-layer circulation. Therefore, we propose a feedback mechanism (named the Adriatic-Ionian Bimodal Oscillating System - BiOS) between variations in the thermohaline properties of waters formed in the Southern Adriatic and the Ionian circulation.
