Introduction: Dozens of multivariable prediction models for atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery (AFACS) have been published, but none have been incorporated into regular clinical practice. One of the reasons for this lack of adoption is poor model performance due to methodological weaknesses in model development. In addition, there has been little external validation of these existing models to evaluate their reproducibility and transportability. The aim of this systematic review is to critically appraise the methodology and risk of bias of papers presenting the development and/or validation of models for AFACS.Methods: We will identify studies that present the development and/or validation of a multivariable prediction model for AFACS through searches of PubMed, Embase and Web of Science from inception to 31 December 2021. In patients with atrial fibrillation and previous episodes of bleeding on oral anticoagulant treatment, left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) has emerged as an alternative way to decrease the risk of stroke.The use of the procedure has been on the rise, and the news coverage has been dominated by an uncritical acceptance of the benefit of this procedure, which probably have contributed to the increasing number of procedures.This commentary is a presentation and critical appraisal of the available evidence on the efficacy and safety of left atrial appendage closure as stroke prophylaxis.We illustrate that LAAO is supported by limited randomised data risk of serious complications, which we do not believe supports the current widespread use.

OBJECTIVES Cardiac tamponade is a life-threatening complication after cardiac surgery. Echocardiography, both transthoracic (TTE) and transesophageal (TEE), may help to identify cardiac tamponade after surgery, but its diagnostic value remains unverified after cardiac surgery. METHODS This retrospective single-centre cohort study used the electronic medical record and echocardiography database of the Catharina Hospital Eindhoven, a tertiary referral cardiothoracic centre, to identify patients who received echocardiography because they were clinically suspected of having cardiac tamponade within the 4 weeks after cardiac surgery. Overall diagnostic accuracy of both TTE and TEE was calculated (sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and receiver operation characteristics curves). Subgroup analyses were performed based on the timing of the echocardiography after primary surgery (72 h). RESULTS The query identified 427 echocardiographs, 373 TTEs and 54 TEEs, being performed in 414 patients (65% males, mean age 67 years). Of them, 116 patients underwent surgical re-exploration in which a cardiac tamponade was determined in 105 patients with a 30-day mortality of 8.6%. The area under the receiver operation characteristics curve for echocardiography in the 4 weeks after cardiac surgery was 0.78 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.72–0.84, P < 0.001]. In the first 24 h after surgery was the positive predictive value of echocardiography 58.3% (95% CI: 28.6–83.5) with an area under the curve of 0.64 (95% CI: 0.49–0.80, P = 0.06). The diagnostic accuracy improved over time for both TTE and TEE. CONCLUSIONS Diagnostic accuracy of echocardiography in the 4 weeks after cardiac surgery for cardiac tamponade is acceptable and improves over time. However, in the early postoperative phase (

INTRODUCTION: Anaemia is common after cardiac surgery and has a negative impact on rehabilitation and patient well-being. We aim to compare the efficacy of single, high-dose intravenous iron therapy versus oral iron supplementation to correct anaemia following open cardiac surgery.METHODS: We present a randomised, active-control superiority trial. Adult patients with moderate anaemia (haemoglobin 5.0-6.8 mmol/l) on the first post-operative day after first-time, non-emergent cardiac surgery are eligible. After stratification by gender, 110 patients are randomised 1:1 to either single, high-dose intravenous iron therapy (20 mg/kg ferric derisomaltose) or oral iron supplementation (100 mg ferrous sulphate orally twice daily). The primary outcome measure at the four-week follow-up is the proportion of participants who are neither anaemic (haemoglobin less-than 8.1 mmol/l in men and less-than 7.5 mmol/l in women) nor have received allogeneic red blood cells since randomisation. IntroductionPostoperative delirium is common in older cardiac surgery patients and associated with negative short-term and long-term outcomes. The alpha-2-adrenergic receptor agonist dexmedetomidine shows promise as prophylaxis and treatment for delirium in intensive care units (ICU) and postoperative settings. Clonidine has similar pharmacological properties and can be administered both parenterally and orally. We aim to study whether repurposing of clonidine can represent a novel treatment option for delirium, and the possible effects of dexmedetomidine and clonidine on long-term cognitive trajectories, motor activity patterns and biomarkers of neuronal injury, and whether these effects are associated with frailty status.Methods and analysisThis five-centre, double-blind randomised controlled trial will include 900 cardiac surgery patients aged 70+ years. Participants will be randomised 1:1:1 to dexmedetomidine or clonidine or placebo. The study drug will be given as a continuous intravenous infusion from the start of cardiopulmonary bypass, at a rate of 0.4 µg/kg/hour. The infusion rate will be decreased to 0.2 µg/kg/hour postoperatively and be continued until discharge from the ICU or 24 hours postoperatively, whichever happens first.Primary end point is the 7-day cumulative incidence of postoperative delirium (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition). Secondary end points include the composite end point of coma, delirium or death, in addition to delirium severity and motor activity patterns, levels of circulating biomarkers of neuronal injury, cognitive function and frailty status 1 and 6 months after surgery.Ethics and disseminationThis trial is approved by the Regional Committee for Ethics in Medical Research in Norway (South-East Norway) and by the Norwegian Medicines Agency. Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) after pediatric cardiac surgery is common. Longer‐term outcomes and the incidence of chronic kidney disease after AKI are not well‐known. Methods and Results All eligible children (aged 1 ‐microglobulin, blood pressure, and kidney ultrasound. Longer‐term follow‐up data on kidney function were collected at the latest available visit. Among 571 patients who underwent surgery, AKI occurred in 113 (19.7%) over a 4‐year period. Fifteen of these (13.3%) died at a median of 31 days (interquartile range [IQR], 9–57) after surgery. A total of 66 patients participated in the kidney assessment at a median of 4.8 years (IQR, 3.9–5.7) after the index AKI episode. Thirty‐nine patients (59.1%) had at least 1 marker of kidney injury, including estimated glomerular filtration rate 2 in 9 (13.6%), proteinuria in 27 (40.9%), α 1 ‐microglobinuria in 5 (7.6%), hypertension in 13 (19.7%), and abnormalities on kidney ultrasound in 9 (13.6%). Stages 1 to 5 chronic kidney disease were present in 18 (27.3%) patients. Patients with CKD were more likely to have an associated syndrome (55.6% versus 20.8%, P =0.015). At 13.1 years (IQR, 11.2–14.0) follow‐up, estimated glomerular filtration rate Conclusions Children who developed AKI after pediatric cardiac surgery showed persistent markers of kidney injury. As chronic kidney disease is a risk factor for cardiovascular comorbidity, long‐term kidney follow‐up in this population is warranted.

PURPOSE: Cardiac surgery in patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) has been associated with a higher risk of infective endocarditis, but how it influences risk of CIED-specific infections is not known. Our aim was to examine risk of systemic CIED infections after cardiac surgery in patients with CIEDs.METHODS: Based on data obtained from Danish administrative registries and the Danish Pacemaker and ICD Register, we conducted a case-control study nested within a nationwide cohort of patients who underwent a de novo CIED implantation in Denmark between 1998 and 2017. We defined cases as incident systemic CIED infections resulting in device system extraction. Controls were sampled 1:100 on time, age, sex and device type using risk set sampling. Exposure was defined as coronary artery bypass graft, or cardiac heart valve replacement or repair surgery.RESULTS: From a study cohort comprising 67,621 patients, we identified 170 cases and 16,788 controls. In the minimally adjusted model, the incidence rate ratio (IRR) for systemic CIED infection was 6.4 (95% confidence interval (CI) 3.8-10.7) with cardiac surgery, and after additional confounder adjustment, 5.4 (95% CI 3.2-9.2). IRRs were higher with restriction to heart valve replacement surgery (adjusted IRR 7.5, 95% CI 4.0-16.6), and when limiting our exposure time window to one year (adjusted IRR 10.1, 95% CI 4.5-22.3).CONCLUSION: Cardiac surgery in patients with de novo CIEDs was associated with a high risk of systemic CIED infections. Highest risk was observed after heart valve replacement surgery and within the first year of surgery.

AIMS: To compare early and late mortality of acute isolated tricuspid valve infective endocarditis (TVIE) treated with valve repair or replacement.METHODS: Patients who were surgically treated for TVIE from 1983 to 2018 were retrieved from the Italian Registry for Surgical Treatment of Valve and Prosthesis Infective Endocarditis. All the patients were followed up by means of phone interview or calling patient referral physicians or cardiologists. Kaplan-Meier method was used to assess late survival and survival free from TVIE recurrence with log-rank test for univariate comparison. The primary end points were early mortality (30 days after surgery) and long-term survival free from TVIE recurrence.RESULTS: A total of 4084 patients were included in the registry. Among them, 149 patients were included in the study. Overall, 77 (51.7%) underwent TV repair and 72 (48.3%) TV replacement. Early mortality was 9% (13 patients). Expected early mortality according to EndoSCORE was 12%. The TV repair showed lower mortality and major complication rate (7% and 16%), compared with TV replacement (11% and 25%), but statistical significance was not reached. Median follow-up was 19.1 years (14.3-23.8). Late deaths were 30 and IE recurrences were 5. No difference in cardiac survival free from IE was found between the two groups after 20 years (80 ± 6% Repair Group vs 59 ± 13% Replacement Group, P = 0.3).CONCLUSIONS: Overall results indicate that once surgically addressed, TVIE has a low recurrence rate and excellent survival, apparently regardless of the type of surgery used to treat it.

Background Delirium occurs frequently following cardiothoracic surgery, and infectious disease is an important risk factor for delirium. Surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass induce suppression of the immune response known as immunoparalysis. We aimed to investigate whether delirious patients had more pronounced immunoparalysis following cardiothoracic surgery than patients without delirium, to explain this delirium-infection association. Methods A prospective matched case–control study was performed in two university hospitals. Cytokine production (tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8 and IL-10) of ex vivo lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated whole blood was analyzed in on-pump cardiothoracic surgery patients preoperatively, and at 5 timepoints up to 3 days after cardiothoracic surgery. Delirium was assessed by trained staff using two validated delirium scales and chart review. Results A total of 89 patients were screened of whom 14 delirious and 52 non-delirious patients were included. Ex vivo-stimulated production of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10 was severely suppressed following cardiothoracic surgery compared to pre-surgery. Postoperative release of cytokines in non-delirious patients was attenuated by 84% [IQR: 13–93] for TNF-α, 95% [IQR: 78–98] for IL-6, and 69% [IQR: 55–81] for IL-10. The attenuation in ex vivo-stimulated production of these cytokines was not significantly different in patients with delirium compared to non-delirious patients (p > 0.10 for all cytokines). Conclusions The post-operative attenuation of ex vivo-stimulated production of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines was comparable between patients that developed delirium and those who remained delirium-free after on-pump cardiothoracic surgery. This finding suggests that immunoparalysis is not more common in cardiothoracic surgery patients with delirium compared to those without.

Background and Purpose: Cardiac pathologies are the second most frequent risk factor (RF) in children with arterial ischemic stroke (AIS). This study aimed to analyze RFs for AIS in children with cardiac disease and cardiac intervention. Methods: Data were drawn from the Swiss Neuropediatric Stroke Registry. Patients with cardiac disease and postprocedural AIS registered from 2000 until 2015 were analyzed for the cause of cardiac disease and for potential RFs. Results: Forty-seven out of 78 children with cardiac disease had a cardiac intervention. Of these, 36 presented a postprocedural AIS. Median time from cardiac intervention to symptom onset was 4 days (interquartile range, 2–8.5); time to diagnosis of AIS was 2 days (interquartile range, 0–5.8). Main RFs for postprocedural AIS were hypotension, prosthetic cardiac material, right-to-left shunt, arrhythmias, low cardiac output, and infections. Conclusions: In children with postprocedural AIS, time to diagnosis was delayed. Most patients presented multiple potentially modifiable RFs as hemodynamic alterations and infections.

International audience; The population of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) is continuously increasing, and a significant proportion of these patients will experience arrhythmias because of the underlying congenital heart defect itself or as a consequence of interventional or surgical treatment. Arrhythmias are a leading cause of mortality, morbidity and impaired quality of life in adults with CHD. Arrhythmias may also occur in children with or without CHD. In light of the unique issues, challenges and considerations involved in managing arrhythmias in this growing, ageing and heterogeneous patient population and in children, it appears both timely and essential to critically appraise and synthesize optimal treatment strategies. The introduction of catheter ablation techniques has greatly improved the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. However, catheter ablation in adults or children with CHD and in children without CHD is more technically demanding, potentially causing various complications, and thus requires a high level of expertise to maximize success rates and minimize complication rates. As French recommendations regarding required technical competence and equipment are lacking in this situation, the Working Group of Pacing and Electrophysiology of the French Society of Cardiology and the Affiliate Group of Paediatric and Adult Congenital Cardiology have decided to produce a common position paper compiled from expert opinions from cardiac electrophysiology and paediatric cardiology. The paper details the features of an interventional cardiac electrophysiology centre that are required for ablation procedures in adults with CHD and in children, the importance of being able to diagnose, monitor and manage complications associated with ablations in these patients and the supplemental hospital-based resources required, such as anaesthesia, surgical back-up, intensive care, haemodynamic assistance and imaging. Lastly, the need for quality evaluations and French registries of ablations in these populations is discussed. The purpose of this consensus statement is therefore to define optimal conditions for the delivery of invasive care regarding ablation of arrhythmias in adults with CHD and in children, and to provide expert and - when possible - evidence-based recommendations on best practice for catheter-based ablation procedures in these specific populations.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a frequent and serious complication of cardiac surgery. This study was designed to establish a scoring system, calculated in the immediate postoperative period, to assess the risk of CKD at 1 yr in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. Methods: We conducted a cohort study including patients with preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate above 60 ml min-1 (1.73 m)-2 who underwent cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. We identified risk factors for de novo CKD at 1 yr using logistic regression. We derived a risk score for CKD, and externally validated this score in a second cohort. Results: The incidence of CKD was 18% and 23% in the derivation and validation cohorts, respectively. ObjectiveTo compare normothermic (35°C–36°C) versus hypothermic (28°C) cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in paediatric patients undergoing open heart surgery to test the hypothesis that normothermic CPB perfusion maintains the functional integrity of major organ systems leading to faster recovery.MethodsTwo single-centre, randomised controlled trials (known as Thermic-1 and Thermic-2, respectively) were carried out to compare the effectiveness and acceptability of normothermic versus hypothermic CPB in children with congenital heart disease undergoing open heart surgery. In both studies, the co-primary clinical outcomes were duration of inotropic support, intubation time and postoperative hospital stay.ResultsIn total, 200 participants were recruited; 59 to the Thermic-1 study and 141 to the Thermic-2 study. 98 patients received normothermic CPB and 102 patients received hypothermic CPB. There were no significant differences between the treatment groups for any of the co-primary outcomes: inotrope duration HR=1.01, 95% CI (0.72 to 1.41); intubation time HR=1.14, 95% CI (0.86 to 1.51); postoperative hospital stay HR=1.06, 95% CI (0.80 to 1.40). Differences favouring normothermia were found in urea nitrogen at 2 days geometric mean ratio (GMR)=0.86 95% CI (0.77 to 0.97); serum creatinine at 3 days GMR=0.89, 95% CI (0.81 to 0.98); urinary albumin at 48 hours GMR=0.32, 95% CI (0.14 to 0.74) and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin at 4 hours GMR=0.47, 95% CI (0.22 to 1.02), but not at other postoperative time points.ConclusionsNormothermic CPB is as safe and effective as hypothermic CPB and can be routinely adopted as a perfusion strategy in low-risk infants and children undergoing open heart surgery.Trial registration numberISRCTN93129502.

Background. The early results of congenital heart surgery in neonates remain a challenge. We sought to determine the nature of the association between annual center volume of neonatal cardiac surgery and operative mortality using a multicenter cohort.Methods. The dataset consists of 27,556 neonatal procedures performed between 1999 and 2015 in 90 centers participating in the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association database. Centers with mean annual volume load of six or more that submitted data for at least 3 consecutive years were included. World Bank annual gross national index per capita was utilized as an indicator of temporal national affluence. Multilevel logistic regression was used to create a model including the significant risk factors and to calculate odds ratios for operative mortality. Iterative modeling of the dataset incrementally excluding centers with lower annual case-load was used to identify the relationship between annual volume and mortality.Results. In the model thus calculated including The Society of Thoracic Surgeons-European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (STAT) mortality score, operative weight and age, noncardiac genetic anomalies, and annual volume of operations were independent risk factors for operative mortality in the analysis of the entire cohort. In the model containing these variables, annual gross national index and year of surgery were not significantly associated with mortality. In the iterative process, annual volume ceased to be a risk factor when units operating on fewer than 60 neonates annually were excluded.Conclusions. In neonatal congenital heart surgery, the risk of operative death decreased with the increase of volume load. AimTo implement recommendations for oral hygiene before elective open-heart surgery in a thoracic surgery ward and to evaluate whether the number of patients who needed to be treated with antibiotics postoperatively was reduced.BackgroundHealthcare systems are challenged to implement initiatives that reduce the development of nosocomial infections, to offer patients a safe and cost-efficient treatment and to reduce the use of antibiotics. Previous interventions have focused on staff behaviour in reducing postoperative infections. In this study, patients were recommended to carry out oral hygiene as recommended in a clinical guideline.MethodsA quasiexperimental design with a control and an intervention group was used. Information on adherence to the recommendation was collected at admission. All medical information and prescriptions of antibiotics were obtained from patients’ medical records. Data were reported as intention to treat.ResultsAltogether 972 patients (506 controls and 466 interventions) were included in the study. Of the intervention patients, 405 (86.9%, 95% CI 83.3 to 89.8) reported that they had adhered to the oral hygiene recommendation. 64 (12.6%) control patients and 36 (7.7%) in the intervention group (p=0.015) were treated with antibiotics postoperatively.ConclusionsIt was feasible to involve patients in a programme for oral hygiene and thereby reduce the number of patients needing antibiotics after open-heart surgery and this might contribute to reducing costs.

Background and objective: Ventricular late potentials (LP) recording with signal-averaged electrocar- diogram allow identifying patients at risk of sudden death and ventricular tachycardia. Cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) could predispose to the development of myocardial ischemia related to imperfect cardioplegia. To the best of our knowledge, no study investigated the protection of cardioplegia and CPB regarding the occurrence of LP in patients without previous myocardial infarction and undergoing cardiac surgery. Methods: In 61 elective patients scheduled for cardiac surgery involving CPB, signal-averaged electrocar- diogram was performed the day before and 24-48h after the surgery. The electrodes were positioned according to Frank's orthogonal derivations. Twenty five patients were excluded because of poor quality signals, leaving 36 patients (age, 64 ± 14) available for the analyses. An abnormal signal-averaged electrocardiogram was considered when ≥2 of the recorded indexes were present. McNemar's tests were performed on the dichotomized values to investigate differences in pre-post scores. Results: The mean CPB duration was of 110 ± 57min. Patients scheduled for cardiac surgery do not exhibited LP after CPB (no significant difference in pre-post CPB scores, P=NS). The probability of a patient with a negative score transitioning to a positive score was 0.23 (P=NS). Conclusions: The present study in cardiac surgical patients suggests that cardioplegia associated to CPB has no significant impact on the occurrence of LP, irrespective of surgery performed

Background Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) induces a systemic inflammatory reaction that may contribute to postoperative complications. Preventing this reaction with steroids may improve outcomes. We performed a systematic review to evaluate the impact of prophylactic steroids on clinical outcomes in patients undergoing on-pump cardiac surgery. Methods We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane CENTRAL for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing perioperative corticosteroid administration with a control group in adults undergoing CPB. Outcomes of interest included mortality, myocardial infarction, and new onset atrial fibrillation. We assessed the quality of evidence using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach. Results Fifty-six RCTs published between 1977 and 2015 were included in this meta-analysis. Mortality was not significantly different between groups [3.0% (215/7258 patients) in the steroid group and 3.5% (252/7202 patients) in the placebo group; relative risk (RR), 0.85; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.71–1.01; P=0.07; I2 = 0%]. Myocardial injury was more frequent in the steroid group [8.0% (560/6989 patients), compared with 6.9% (476/6929 patients); RR, 1.17, 95% CI, 1.04–1.31; P=0.008; I2=0%]. New onset atrial fibrillation was lower in the steroid group [25.7% (1792/6984 patients) compared with 28.3% (1969/6964 patients), RR, 0.91, 95% CI, 0.86–0.96, P=0.0005, I2=43%]; this beneficial effect was limited to small trials (P for interaction Conclusions After randomising 16 013 patients, steroid administration at the time of cardiac surgery had an unclear impact on mortality, increased the risk of myocardial injury, and the impact on atrial fibrillation should be viewed with caution given that large trials showed no effect.

The hybrid approach is a reliable, reproducible treatment option for patients with HLHS. Herein we report our results using this approach, focusing on its efficacy, safety and late outcome. Methods: We reviewed prospectively collected data on patients treated for HLHS using a hybrid approach between July 2007 and September 2014. Results: Nine patients had a stage 1 hybrid procedure, with seven undergoing a comprehensive stage 2 procedure. One patient completed the Fontan procedure. Five patients underwent balloon atrial septostomy after the hybrid procedure; in three patients, a stent was placed across the atrial septum. There were three deaths: two early after the hybrid procedure and one early after stage two palliation. Overall survival was 66%. Conclusions: In our single-center series, the hybrid approach for HLHS yields intermediate results comparable to those of the Norwood strategy. The existence of dedicated teams for the diagnosis and management of these patients, preferably in high-volume centers, is of major importance in this condition. Resumo: Introdução: A síndrome do coração esquerdo hipoplásico (SCEH) é uma das principais causas de morte durante a primeira semana de vida. A abordagem híbrida é uma opção de paliação para doentes com SCEH. Reportamos os nossos resultados com esta abordagem, com foco particular na sua eficácia, segurança e resultado final. Métodos: Trabalho prospetivo. Revisão dos dados clínicos de doentes com SCEH, submetidos a abordagem híbrida de paliação entre julho de 2007 e setembro de 2014. Resultados: Nove doentes foram submetidos a primeiro estadio híbrido de paliação. Destes, sete completaram segundo estadio e um doente foi submetido a cirurgia de Fontan. Cinco doentes foram submetidos a atriosseptostomia com balão. Em três procedeu-se a implantação de stent no septo interauricular. Verificaram-se três óbitos: dois logo após o primeiro estadio híbrido e um após o segundo estadio. A sobrevida global foi de 66%. Conclusões: Na nossa experiência, a abordagem híbrida para SCEH produz resultados comparáveis aos da estratégia de Norwood. A necessidade de uma equipa dedicada para o diagnóstico e manejo destes doentes, de preferência em centros de alto volume, é de grande importância nesta condição particular. Objectives Increased physical activity predicts survival and reduces risk of readmission in patients with coronary heart disease. However, few data show how physical activity is associated with survival and readmission after heart valve surgery. Objective were to assess the association between physical activity levels 6–12 months after heart valve surgery and (1) survival, (2) hospital readmission 18–24 months after surgery and (3) participation in exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation. Methods Prospective cohort study with registry data from The CopenHeart survey, The Danish National Patient Register and The Danish Civil Registration System of 742 eligible patients. Physical activity was quantified with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and analysed using Kaplan–Meier analysis and Cox regression and logistic regression methods. Results Patients with a moderate to high physical activity level had a reduced risk of mortality (3 deaths in 289 patients, 1%) compared with those with a low physical activity level (13 deaths in 235 patients, 5.5%) with a fully adjusted HR of 0.19 (95% CI 0.05 to 0.70). In contrast, physical activity level was not associated with the risk of hospital readmission. Patients who participated in exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (n=297) were more likely than the non-participants (n=200) to have a moderate or high physical activity level than a low physical activity level (fully adjusted OR: 1.52, 95% CI 1.03 to 2.24). Conclusions Moderate to high levels of physical activity after heart valve surgery are positively associated with higher survival rates and participation in cardiac rehabilitation.
