We show that plasma fixed nitrogen (PFN) as a biostimulant can improve marketable lettuce yield following delayed harvest. Using just one-tenth of the conventional nitrogen, PFN, generated by a dielectric barrier discharge over water, was field-tested against traditional fertilization methods. PFN increased marketable lettuce yield by 250% over conventional growing methods despite reducing applied nitrogen fertilizer. Our study suggests that PFN can increase marketable lettuce yield following delayed harvest while ensuring environmental sustainability and product quality.

High frequency oscillations are observed in a neon plasma of a direct current magnetron discharge. At low discharge currents, we see highly coherent 60 MHz fluctuations. Above a distinct current threshold, secondary 5 - 10 MHz fluctuations emerge in addition to turbulent fluctuations in the 60 - 100 MHz range. The oscillations in the total discharge current suggest axial wave propagation. A lower-hybrid wave theory is invoked to model the high frequency oscillations. We apply inverse design methods to produce two-dimensional triangular-lattice plasma metamaterial (PMM) devices which are then constructed and demonstrated experimentally. Finite difference frequency domain simulations are used along with forward-mode automatic differentiation to optimize the plasma densities of each of the plasma elements in the PMM to perform beam steering and demultiplexing under transverse magnetic polarization. The optimal device parameters are then used to assign plasma density values to elements that make up an experimental version of the device. Device performance is evaluated against both the simulated results and human-designed alternatives, showing the benefits and disadvantages of in-silico inverse design and paving the way for future fully in-situ optimization., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

The efficiency of the conversion of CO$_2$ into CO with nanosecond repetitively pulsed discharges (NRP) is investigated in a high pressure batch reactor. Stable discharges are obtained at up to 12~bar. By-products of CO$_2$ splitting are measured with gas chromatography. The energy efficiency is determined for a range of processing times, pulse energy, and fill pressures. The energy efficiency is found to be approximately 20% and is only weakly sensitive to the plasma operating parameters, i.e., the extent of CO$_2$ conversion is almost linearly-dependent on the specific energy input. A conversion rate of up to 14% is achieved with an energy efficiency of 23%. For long processing times, a drop in efficiency is observed, due to the increasing significance of recombination reactions, as described by a macroscopic kinetic mechanism. Reaction pathways that are believed to play an important role in nanosecond pulsed discharges are discussed. It appears that vibrational excitation does not play a significant role in CO$_2$ conversion in these types of short-pulse discharge. In an expansion of a previous study [1], we apply inverse design methods to produce two-dimensional plasma metamaterial devices with realistic plasma elements which incorporate quartz envelopes, collisionality (loss), non-uniform density profiles, and resistance to experimental error/perturbation. Backpropagated finite difference frequency domain simulations are used to design waveguides and demultiplexers operating under the transverse magnetic polarization. Optimal devices with realistic elements are compared to previous devices with idealized elements, and several parameter initialization schemes for the optimization algorithm are explored. Demultiplexing and waveguiding are demonstrated for microwave-regime devices composed of plasma elements with reasonable space-averaged plasma frequencies ~10 GHz and a collision frequency ~1 GHz, allowing for future in-situ training and experimental realization of these designs., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

We investigated the use of plasma-fixated nitrogen, which produces nitrates (NO3-) in water, as a possible nitrogen fertilizer for recreational turf such as ryegrass and bentgrass. Experiments were carried out to study the effects of nitrate concentration on growth, the further effects of adding phosphorous (P) and potassium (K) to the plasma nitrated solution to make an N-P-K complete fertilizer, and to compare the efficacy of plasma-fixated nitrogen to sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and potassium nitrate (KNO3). The results indicate that the growth and biomass of the plants were strongly dependent on the concentration of the plasma-fixated nitrogen. Adding P-K to the plasma-fixated nitrogen improved grass growth. Grass that was supplied plasma-fixated nitrogen had improved growth compared to those supplied with equal amounts of NaNO3and KNO3. This work highlights the potential use of plasma-fixated nitrogen as a fertilizer source for commonly used turf grass.

We apply inverse design methods to produce two-dimensional plasma metamaterial (PMM) devices. Backpropagated finite difference frequency domain (FDFD) simulations are used to design waveguides and demultiplexers operating under both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. Demultiplexing and waveguiding are demonstrated for devices composed of plasma elements with reasonable plasma densities ~7 GHz, allowing for future in-situ training and experimental realization of these designs. We also explore the possible applicability of PMMs to nonlinear boolean operations for use in optical computing. Functionally complete logical connectives (OR and AND) are achieved in the TM mode.

This paper provides perspectives on recent progress in the understanding of the physics of devices where the external magnetic field is applied perpendicularly to the discharge current. This configuration generates a strong electric field, which acts to accelerates ions. The many applications of this set up include generation of thrust for spacecraft propulsion and the separation of species in plasma mass separation devices. These ExB plasmas are subject to plasma-wall interaction effects as well as various micro and macro instabilities, and in many devices, we observe the emergence of anomalous transport. Degradation of first wall materials due to plasma disturbances severely limit both the lifetime and longevity of fusion reactors. Among the various kinds of disturbances, type I edge localized modes (ELMs) in particular present significant design challenges due to their expected heat loading and relative frequency in next step fusion reactors. Plasma gun devices have been used extensively to replicate ELM conditions in the laboratory, however feature higher density, lower temperatures, and thus higher flow collisionality than those expected in fusion conditions. This work presents experimental visualizations that indicate strong shocks form in gun devices over spatial and temporal scales that precede ablation dynamics. These measurements are used to validate detailed magnetohydrodynamic simulations that capture the production of plasma jets and the shielding effect collisionality plays in particle transport to material surfaces. Simulations show that self-shielding effects in plasma guns reduce the free streaming heat flux by up to 90% and further reduce the incoming particle kinetic energy impinging on material surfaces. These simulations are performed over a range of operating conditions for gun devices and a discussion is provided regarding how existing experimental measurements can be interpreted when extrapolating to fusion conditions.

A 3D woodpile structure tunable plasma photonic crystal is designed, simulated, and experimentally characterized over the S - X band of the electromagnetic spectrum. The measurements confirm that the electromagnetic response is rich in dynamics. The photonic crystal's reconfigurability, achieved through individual discharge control of the properties of the woodpile plasma columns, offers an unprecedented opportunity to better resolve the interactions between both the Bragg and localized surface plasmon modes which dominate the spectrum at lower frequencies. Both the experiments and simulations reveal evidence for the coupling of Bragg and surface plasmon modes through a Fano resonance.

We examine the properties of a gaseous plasma resonator generated by focusing a high-energy laser pulse through a lens and into a gas. An analytical model is presented describing the scattering resonance of these near-ellipsoidal plasmas and its dependence on their eccentricity and intrinsic plasma properties. This dependence is investigated through Ku band transmission experiments of a waveguide with an embedded single plasma element and through optical diagnostics of the laser-induced plasma. The described resonator has the potential to be used as the building block in a new class of metamaterials with fully three-dimensional structural flexibility.
