Abstract

Applicare appieno i principi del gender main-streaming, in accordo alle indicazioni della Comunità Europea, alla tutela della salute e sicurezza nei luoghi di lavoro significa in pratica rivedere tutti gli aspetti della prevenzione sotto l'ottica di genere, vale a dire tenendo in considerazione le differenze di sesso e di genere tra lavoratori e lavoratrici non solo come determinanti della salute, ma ancor più nel caso specifico come determinanti del rischio. In questo passaggio evolutivo il ruolo del medico competente è particolarmente importante. In questo lavoro vengono proposti alcuni strumenti operativi che possono concretamente implementare l'ottica di genere nei diversi ambiti della prevenzione, nei quali il medico competente ha un ruolo di primo piano, se non esclusivo, quali la valutazione dei rischi, la formazione e la sorveglianza sanitaria.

Abstract

The MAPEC-Life project aims to study the biological effects of early exposure to air pollutants on the oral mucosa cells of school-age children in five Italian cities. A questionnaire was created to evaluate the association between outdoor and indoor airborne pollutants, lifestyle, diet and biomarker effects. The feasibility and reliability of the questionnaire were evaluated.

Abstract

Introduction Genotoxic biomarkers have been studied largely in adult population, but few studies so far have investigated them in children exposed to air pollution. Children are a high-risk group as regards the health effects of air pollution and some studies suggest that early exposure during childhood can play an important role in the development of chronic diseases in adulthood. The objective of the project is to evaluate the associations between the concentration of urban air pollutants and biomarkers of early biological effect in children, and to propose a model for estimating the global risk of early biological effects due to air pollutants and other factors in children. Methods and analysis Two biomarkers of early biological effects, DNA damage by the comet assay and the micronuclei (MN) test, will be investigated in oral mucosa cells of 6–8-year-old children. Concurrently, some toxic airborne pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and nitro-PAH) and in vitro air mutagenicity and toxicity in ultra-fine air particulates (PM0.5) will be evaluated. Furthermore, demographic and socioeconomic variables, other sources of exposures to air pollutants and lifestyle variables will be assessed by a structured questionnaire. The associations between sociodemographic, environmental and other exposure variables and biomarkers of early biological effect using univariate and multivariate models will be analysed. A tentative model for calculating the global absolute risk of having early biological effects caused by air pollution and other variables will be proposed. Ethics and dissemination The project has been approved by the Ethics Committees of the local Health Authorities. Abstract

A simple technique of pulse compression, based on the linear chirp compensation of self-phase modulation (SPM) spectra in dispersion shifted fibers, is demonstrated. The optimization procedure is carried out, for a short span of a single-mode fiber, using a parabolic law, which describes the behavior of the squared output pulse width versus the pump peak power in the case of Gaussian pulses. The experimental results give a minimum pulse duration of 233 fs, which is in good agreement with the model. Shorter and coherent pulses, down to 90 fs, have been obtained by inserting an interference filter at the optical output.

15. Power spectral lineshapes of microwave radiation backscattered from sea surfaces at small grazing angles

Abstract

Analysis of recent small-grazing-angle microwave backscattering data indicate that the Bragg mechanism alone cannot explain the experimental results. The authors investigate the issue of scattering mechanisms by studying the lineshapes of the backscattered microwave power spectra. It is found that spectral lineshapes can be decomposed into physically meaningful basis functions which are Gaussian, Lorentzian or Voigtian. Generally, the spectral component corresponding to the lower frequency peak in the power spectral density (PSD) of the vertical polarisation is well described by a Gaussian profile, while the spectral component due to the higher frequency peak in the horizontal polarisation PSD is well described by either a Lorentzian or a Voigtian profile, depending on the size of the radar footprint. These quantitative results provide compelling evidence that several entirely different mechanisms, corresponding to different surface features of the dynamic sea surface, are active in contributing to microwave backscattering returns. These mechanisms comprise: first, scattering from free Bragg waves, characterised by a Gaussian distribution in scatterer speeds and a Gaussian component in the PSD; secondly, scattering from sporadically appearing, fast moving, short lifetime, facet-like scatterers, characterised by an exponential distribution in scatterer lifetime and a Lorentzian component in the PSD; and finally, scattering from fast-to-intermediate speed bound-Bragg waves, or not-so-fast facets, characterised by a convolution of the Gaussian and Lorentzian processes, resulting in a Voigtian component in the PSD.

Abstract

Calculations of surface wave and radar cross section modulation induced by a spatially varying surface current have been compared with field measurements made with SAR (X- and L-bands), real aperture radar (X-band), laser slope guage, and CCD video camera during the Joint Canada/U.S. Ocean Wave Investigation Project (JOWIP) which took place in August 1983. The comparison reveals that (i) many existing wind-relaxation models underpredict the hydrodynamic effect of the current, (ii) simple Bragg scattering model underpredicts radar backscatter modulation for higher frequency radars (e.g., X- band) but appears acceptable at lower radar frequencies (e.g., L-band), (iii) the discrepancy between measurements and calculations at high radar frequency is reduced, but not eliminated, when the effects of long surface waves have been accounted for. Abstract

A simple instability mechanism by which water waves can extract energy from a shear flow is isolated. A cubic equation is derived which provides the instability criteria and the growth rate. This mechanism is effective only if the surface drift velocity exceeds the minimum wave speed, which is approximately 23 cm/s in water, and only if the drift layer thickness exceeds a minimum value which is comparable with the unstable wavelength. In the situation of a sufficiently strong wind blowing over a flat calm, this mechanism is triggered early in the development stage, and appears to dominate the initial growth stages of centimeter waves. Abstract

Abstract

Several studies have shown that enteric viruses can be transferred onto the surface of vegetables and fruits through spray irrigation, but, recently, reports have suggested viral contamination of vegetables sub-irrigated with reused wastewater. Hydroponic cultures, used to grow ready to eat fresh lettuce, have also been used to study the possibility of viral absorption through roots. This study was conducted to assess a possible risk of viral contamination in lettuce from contaminated water. The leaves of lettuce plants grown in hydroponic cultures where the roots were exposed to water containing Coxsakievirus B2, were analysed for evidence of the virus. The plants and water were sampled at different times and virus was measured using quantitative RT-PCR and infectivity assay. In leaf samples, the lowest observed infective data were lower than the qRT-PCR detection limits, suggesting that free viral RNA or damaged viruses are eliminated rapidly while infectious particles remain stable for a longer time. The obtained data revealed that the leaves were contaminated at a water concentration of 4.11 ± 1 Log Most Probable Number/L (8.03 ± 1 Log GC/L) a concentration observed in contaminated untreated water of wastewater treatment plants. However, the absorption dynamics and whether the virus is inactive in the leaves still remains to be clarified. Nevertheless, this work has practical implications for risk management in using reclaimed water for agricultural use; when irrigated vegetables are destined for raw consumption, virological contamination in water sources should be evaluated.
