Capniidae are a family of stoneflies, also known as snow flies, who emerge in winter. The phylogeny of Capniidae is widely accepted to be based on morphological analysis. Until now, only five Capniidae mitochondrial genomes have been sequenced so far. In addition, sampling is required to determine an accurate phylogenetic association because the generic classification of this family is still controversial and needs to be investigated further. In this study, the first mitogenome of genus Isocapnia was sequenced with a length of 16,200 bp and contained 37 genes, including a control region, two rRNAs, 22 tRNAs, and 13 PCGs, respectively. Twelve PCGs originated with the common start codon ATN (ATG, ATA, or ATT), while nad5 used GTG. Eleven PCGs had TAN (TAA or TAG) as their last codon; however, cox1 and nad5 had T as their final codon due to a shortened termination codon. All tRNA genes demonstrated the cloverleaf structure, which is distinctive for metazoans excluding the tRNASer1 (AGN) that missed the dihydrouridine arm. A Phylogenetic analysis of the superfamily Nemouroidea was constructed using thirteen PCGs from 32 formerly sequenced Plecoptera species. The Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood phylogeny tree structures derived similar results across the thirteen PCGs. Our findings strongly supported Leuctridae + ((Capniidae + Taeniopterygidae) + (Nemouridae + Notonemouridae)). Ultimately, the best well-supported generic phylogenetic relationship within Capniidae is as follows; (Isocapnia + (Capnia + Zwicknia) + (Apteroperla + Mesocapnia)). These findings will enable us to better understand the evolutionary relationships within the superfamily Nemouroidea and the generic classification and mitogenome structure of the family Capniidae.

Capniella gibba sp. n., the fourth species of the small East Palaearctic winter stonefly genus Capniella Klapálek, 1920 is described on the basis of male adults collected in the Odaesan Mts, Republic of Korea. Affinities of the new species is discussed, and characters are compared to congeners. This is the 96th stonefly species known from the Korean Peninsula.

A complementary re-description of Kyphopteryx dorsalis Kimmins, 1947 is presented on the basis of a fresh male and additional females from southeastern Tibet, southwestern China. The hitherto unknown inner structures of the female terminalia are described, as well as further details of the male genitalia. In this study, we also present the first records of Capnia s.l. yunnana Li & Yang, 2011 from Tibet and a formal description of an unassociated Capnia s.l. female collected together with the above species. An updated checklist of the named species of Capniidae and Taeniopterygidae from China is also given.

Capnia yavorskayae Teslenko sp. nov. (Figs. 1–7) Material examined. Holotype: female, Russia, Far East, Khabarovskiy Kray, Komsomolskiy State Nature Reserve, Khankuka Stream Basin, Gorin River Basin, Amur River Basin, 50º76.818 N, 137º42.157 E, 14.05.2020, coll. N. Yavorskaya. Paratypes: 2 females the same place and data as holotype; 21 females, Khankuka Stream, low part, Gorin River Basin, Amur River Basin, 14.05.2020, coll. N. Yavorskaya; 1 female, quarry on the road 50º75.695 N, 137º41.273 E, Amur R. Basin, 14.05.2020; 3 females (2 in slides) unnamed stream near Kamennaya Pad cordon, Amur River Basin, 50°41’ N, 137°14’ E, 14.05.2020, coll. N. Female subgenital plate short, transverse, truncated posteriorly, occupies anterior half of the sternum 8; unevenly pigmented, anterolateral edges pale, posterior margin straight or slightly rounded medially, and strongly sclerotized; inner sclerite of vaginal complex small, tooth-shaped, and black. Two or three thin transverse shallow membranous folds and a pair of lateral sclerites located below posterolateral margin the subgenital plate. Genital opening of the vaginal complex is broad. Description. Medium-sized species, body length 5.2–6.2 mm (n=7), darkly sclerotized, and overall brown color (Figs. 1, 4–6). Setation is dense and long, especially on abdomen and cerci (Figs. 1, 4–6). Antenna is moderately long, with 31 or more segments. Cercus slender and hairy, shorter than the abdomen length, with 11 or more club-shaped segments; third basal segment as long as wide, further ones are gradually elongated (Figs. 5, 6); apical cercal segments are the longest with their length about three times of their width, intercalary setae are dense and short (Fig. 1). Wings shortened, forewing length 4.3 – 4.6 mm, wingspan 9.6‒10.2 mm; brownish along radial field, veins dark brown, margins with relatively long brown bristles (Figs. 2, 3). R 1 of forewing typical of Capnia, bent upward at its origin, four cross veins between C and Sc. Rs bears two apical branches, two veins between М and Cu 2 ; anal veins two (Fig. 2). Hindwing paler than forewing, veins brownish (Fig. 3). Mesothoracic sclerite (Fig. 4) from ventral view features narrow spinasternum (Sс), not fused with prothoracic postfurcasternum (PPfs) and large basisternum (Bs); median-sized subtriangular presternum (Prs) not fused with basisternum; subtriangular furcasternum (Fs) fused with basisternum, furcasternal arms (Fsa), and furcasternal pit (Fsp); postfurcasternum (Pfs) divided into two lateral, suboval sclerites not fused with others; katepisternum (Kes) separated from basisternum and trochantin (Tn). Abdominal terga 1−8 brown with broad longitudinal membranous areas along the midline, integument light, matte in appearance. Terga 9‒10 are fully sclerotized. Abdominal sterna 1 – 7 with paired unsclerotized paralateral bands, sternum 7 slightly longer than others (Figs. 5, 6). Sternum 8 has a short, transverse subgenital plate, truncated posteriorly, length does not exceed ½ the length of the sternum 8 (Figs. 5, 6). An oval, unevenly pigmented spot occupies most of the subgenital plate, with pale anterolateral edges. Posterior margin strongly sclerotized, straight or slightly rounded medially, covered posterolaterally with long setae, and overlapping a small tooth-shaped black inner sclerite (Figs. 5, 6). Two or three thin transverse shallow membranous folds are below the subgenital plate. A pair of lateral sclerites located below posterolateral margins of subgenital plate at the membranous half of sternum 8 and do not exceed the length of sternum (Figs. 5, 6). Vaginal complex with broad genital opening, membranous genital cavity reaches the middle of the segment 7 where it branches into the oviducts (Fig. 7). Affinities. Based on external female morphology, no closely related species are indicated. The noticeably short and truncated subgenital plate is not similar to other Capnia species, and only remotely resembles that of C. kurnakovi, from the Kolyma River Basin, North-East Russia (Zhiltzova 1978). Сapnia kurnakovi has a shortened subgenital plate but posterior obtuse-angled margin, its base and medial parts are dark, thin and transverse; and membranous folds below the subgenital plate are absent. Distribution and ecology. The Gorin River is a left tributary (facing downstream) of the Amur River (the Low Amur Basin) about 390 km long. It flows in the Komsomolskiy State Nature Reserve in the Khabarovskiy Kray, of the Russian Far East. The mountain ranges belong to the Sikhote-Alin folded region. Capnia yavorskayae sp. nov. was collected in tributaries of the Gorin River downstream: in the Khankuka Stream (13 km long, altitude 360 m above sea level), Siutaru Stream (13 km long, 480 m above sea level), and small unnamed stream in tract Kamennaya Pad, which flows down in Amur River independently (Figs. 9–11). Stream water temperature did not exceed 5–7°C. Capnia yavorskayae sp. nov. seems to be a cold stenothermal species occurring in small mountain streams at altitudes of 300–500 m above sea level. The flight period is difficult to understand from the collection method and narrow window of time it was in operation; all females were collected between 14–19 May, and at that time appeared to be nearing completion. The new species was collected along with females of C. khingana, Capniella nodosa Klapálek, 1920, Paracapnia leisteri Zhiltzova and Potikha, 2005, and males and females of Paraleuctra cercia (Okamoto, 1922) (Klapálek 1920, Potikha and Zhiltzova 2005, Okamoto 1922). Etymology. Capnia yavorskayae, a new species of the stonefly family Capniidae, is described from the Low Amur River Basin, Khabarovskiy Kray of the Russian Far East, on the basis of female morphological features. Confirmation of the uniqueness of the new species was also molecularly compared to other Capnia, including a few Far Eastern species, C. aligera Zapekina-Dulkeit, C. bargusinica Zapekina-Dulkeit, C. khingana Teslenko, C. kurnakovi Zhiltzova, C. nearctica Banks, C. nigra (Pictet), and C. rara Zapekina-Dulkeit for which DNA barcodes were obtained. We support the distinctiveness of the new species with mitochondrial DNA sequences, comparing it to Capnia from the eastern Palaearctic and Nearctic realms and one Zwicknia species. The new species forms a common clade with C. khingana, C. kurnakovi from the Russian Far East, and an undetermined Capnia species from Honshu, Japan. Each species from the Russian Far East has high interspecific distances from other Capnia species except C. nearctica which was close to C. atra Morton.

Capnia s.l. sp. (Figs. 10b, 11) Examined Material. 1 female (CUAC): China, Tibet Autonomous Region, Nyingchi County, Sejilashan (Sejila Mountains), Sejilashan National Natural Reserve, unnamed stream at Zhongshan Station, N 29°36.60' E 94°36.19', 4300 m, 2014.VII.10–VIII.20, Malaise trap, Qicheng Yang; 2 females (CUAC): same locality and collector, 2017. VII.5–VIII.5. Description. Body generally dark brown. Wings macropterous, hyaline with brown veins. Body length ca. 6.6 mm. Forewing length ca. 5.8 mm, hindwing length ca. 5.0 mm (n=3). Terga 1-8 with membranous medial portion (Fig. 10b). Sternum 8 with a rounded membranous area anteromedially, subgenital plate large and entire, covering most of sternum 8 but not extending to sternum 9. The subgenital plate is U-shaped with lateral margin narrowed at middle, posterior edge rounded and bearing a projecting hook on each posterolateral corner. A pair of small triangular lateral sclerites occurring on the posterior margin of sternum 8 and lateral to the small hooks of subgenital plate. Sternum 9 with a medial, elongated triangular sclerite. Two rectangular sclerites residing beside the medial sclerite covering most of the lateral portion of the sternum 9 but laterally not fused with tergum; the anterior third of inner margin narrowed (Fig. 11a). In the oblique lateral view, the subgenital plate is flattened (Fig. 11b). Remarks. This unassociated female belongs to the Capnia s.l. cordata group sensu Zhiltzova (2001). The remarkable medial sclerite of sternum 9 distinguishes it from all other known females of the group. Given that only the female of C. s.l. qilianshana Li & Yang, 2009 remained unknown, the present females most probably belong to an unnamed species.

In this study, two new mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) ofMesonemourametafiligeraandMesonemouratritaeniafrom the family Nemouridae (Insecta: Plecoptera) were sequenced. TheMesonemourametafiligeramitogenome was a 15,739 bp circular DNA molecule, which was smaller than that ofM.tritaenia(15,778 bp) due to differences in the size of the A+T-rich region. Results show that gene content, gene arrangement, base composition, and codon usage were highly conserved in two species. Ka/Ks ratios analyses of protein-coding genes revealed that the highest and lowest rates were found in ND6 and COI and that all these genes were evolving under purifying selection. All tRNA genes in nemourid mitogenomes had a typical cloverleaf secondary structure, except for tRNASer(AGN)which appeared to lack the dihydrouridine arm. The multiple alignments of nemourid lrRNA and srRNA genes showed that sequences of three species were highly conserved. All the A+T-rich region included tandem repeats regions and stem-loop structures. The phylogenetic analyses using Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum likelihood methods (ML) generated identical results. Amphinemurinae and Nemourinae were sister-groups and the family Nemouridae was placed as sister to Capniidae and Taeniopterygidae.

Molecular tools are commonly directed at refining taxonomies and the species that constitute their fundamental units. This has been especially insightful for groups for which species hypotheses are ambiguous and have largely been based on morphological differences between certain life stages or sexes, and has added importance when taxa are a focus of conservation efforts. Here, we examine the taxonomic status of Arsapnia arapahoe, a winter stonefly in the family Capniidae that is a species of conservation concern because of its limited abundance and restricted range in northern Colorado, USA. Phylogenetic analyses of sequences of mitochondrial and nuclear genes of this and other capniid stoneflies from this region and elsewhere in western North America indicated extensive haplotype sharing, limited genetic differences, and a lack of reciprocal monophyly between A. arapahoe and the sympatric A. decepta, despite distinctive and consistent morphological differences in the sexual apparatus of males of both species. Analyses of autosomal and sex‐linked single nucleotide polymorphisms detected using genotyping by sequencing indicated that all individuals of A. arapahoe consisted of F1 hybrids between female A. decepta and males of another sympatric stonefly, Capnia gracilaria. Rather than constitute a self‐sustaining evolutionary lineage, A. arapahoe appears to represent the product of nonintrogressive hybridization in the limited area of syntopy between two widely distributed taxa. This offers a cautionary tale for taxonomists and conservation biologists working on the less‐studied components of the global fauna.

Capnopsis schilleri archaica Zwick, 1984 The subspecies was described on the basis of specimens from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Russia (Zwick 1984). Azerbaijani specimens include the holotype and 18 paratypes, collection data are enumerated as ��� Azerbeidshan, Kjurakčai, 15.3.1970, leg. A. Kownacki���. This locality probably refers on K��r��k��ay River, a tributary of the Kura River in G��yg��l district (G��nc��-Qazax region). Known Plecoptera data published from Azerbaijan are critically reviewed. New records of 28 species are enumerated on the basis of specimens collected between 2017 and 2019, among them 16 are new for the fauna of Azerbaijan. Nemoura irani Aubert, 1964 is new for the whole Caucasian region, Leuctra sanainica Zhiltzova, 1960 and Plesioperla sakartvella (Zhiltzova, 1956) are new for the Greater Caucasus. The female and larva of an unknown Protonemura Kempny, 1898 species, collected in the Talysh Mts, are illustrated and described under temporary name Protonemura sp. AZE-1. A new species of Protonemura, collected both in the Azerbaijan and Georgian areas of the Greater Caucasus, will be formally described in a further paper. A male Protonemura specimen was found to be infected by mermithid worms, morphological lesions are illustrated and commented; this is the second documented case of mermithid infection in stoneflies. Subspecies level identity of Azerbaijani populations of Leuctra fusca (Linnaeus, 1758) proved to be problematic, morphological characters of the specimens are illustrated. Synonymy of Isoperla caucasica Balinsky, 1950 and I. pulchra Balinsky, 1950 under I. bithynica (Kempny, 1908) is disputed, the two names are combined under I. grammatica (Poda, 1761) sensu lato.

Material examined. China, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Eastern Tien Shan: 9 males, 1 female, 3 exuviae, Bogdo-Ula Range, Urumqi city, Dabancheng District, Lake Sangecha, altitude 3,503 m above sea level, 12.VII.2017, N 43��48.228���, E 88��16.339���, leg. D.M. P. Notes. This species was originally described from Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve, Kazakhstan (Zhiltzova 1969). Zwick & Sivec (1980) provided a supplementary description from Himalayan specimens. Male. Body is 6.8���9.3 mm in length, antenna length 8.6���10.4 mm, cerci length 8.2���9.7 mm (n=8). The wings are reduced, their length not exceeding 0.5 mm. Tergum 9 bears two spoon-shaped projections posteriorly; projections elongated, darkly sclerotized dorsally, with rounded margins, and divided with rectangular notch (Figs. 11��� 11b). Basal sclerite large, longitudinally elongated, slightly sclerotized (Fig. 11a). Main epiproct sclerite elongated, sharply curved basally, directed forward and upward, slightly widened in the middle of the length; apex rounded and open (Figs. 11���11b). Laterobasal sclerite fused with main epiproct sclerite, resembling a small, pigmented acuteangled protrusion (Figs. 11, 11a). Subgenital plate narrowed and rounded posteriorly (Fig. 11b). Paraprocts triangularly curved, wide basally and noticeably narrowed to the apices (Fig. 11b). Fusion plate fused to paraprocts in their basal half. Fusion plate relatively long, reaching basal portion of main epiproctal sclerite ventrally Figs. (11���11b). Female. Body length 11.7 mm, wings extend beyond the tip of the abdomen, fore wing length 11.6 mm, wingspan 24.9 mm. Sternum 8 unevenly pigmented, median, rounded pale spot flanked by a pair of dark brown patches laterally; posterior margin of sternum is straight (Fig. 12). Subgenital plate greatly shortened, occupying �� of the sternum 8 length. Subgenital plate is pale, with almost straight posterior margin. A pair of elongate-oval brown lateral sclerites fused with lateral edges and is directed to brown patches (Fig. 12). Genital opening broad, inner sclerite thin, longitudinal, weakly sclerotized, it is visible through the subgenital plate medially (Fig. 12). Distribution and ecology. Capnia s.l. longicauda has the widest distribution among the Capniidae known in the Palaearctic and Oriental Realm (Muranyi et al. 2015). The species was reported in the Western and Central Tian Shan, the Eastern Himalayas, and Karakoram (Zwick, Sivec, 1980). The species occurs at altitudes of 2,000 ���5,150 m above sea level at the foot of glaciers and in glacial lakes, in the upper reaches of mountain streams and rivers. The emergence is extended from late May to late July. Capnia s.l. longicauda is recorded for the Eastern Tien Shan and stonefly fauna of China for the first time. This species was collected in alpine glacial Sangecha Lake, the Bogdo-Ula Range at an altitude 3,503 m above sea level. Sangecha Lake is fed by a melting glacier and lies in a glacial cirque that is 900 m long and 700 m wide (Figs. 33, 34). The rocky shores are formed by the moraine and talus. Even in July the Sangeсha Lake is covered with ice. Nemoura lepnevae Zhiltzova, 1971, Amphinemura mirabilis turkestanica Zhiltzova, 1978, Capnia s.l. longicauda Zhiltzova, 1969 and Mesoperlina pecirkai Klapálek, 1921 are reported for the stonefly fauna of China for the first time. The species were collected in the Bogdo-Ula and Karlyktag Ranges of the Eastern Tian Shan Mountains, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In addition, a detailed redescription of Filchneria wusuensis Chen, 2019 including new illustrations is provided.

Eucapnopsis yunnana sp. nov. Adult habitus. (Figs. 1, 2, 6). Body generally brown to dark brown. Wings macropterous, hyaline with brown veins. Two crossveins between the C vein and Sc 1 vein (Fig. 2). Head slightly wider than pronotum, with three pale ocelli, compound eyes dark. Antennae slender, approximately same length as forewing. Pronotum wider than long, corner obtuse, with dark rugosities. Legs brown to dark brown (Fig. 1). Cerci slender and brown, distinctly shorter than the abdomen, with 4���5 segments in the types. The length of each segments gradually getting longer towards apex, the basal one nearly 0.1 mm, but the distal segment ca. 0.2 mm. Segments clubbed, covered with thick setae, and distal portion of each segment enlarged (Figs. 6 c���6d). Male (Figs. 2���6). Body length 4.8���4.9 mm. Forewing length 5.5���5.6 mm, hindwing length 5.1���5.2 mm. Terga 5���10 with sclerotized anterior margins. Tergum 9 slightly concave at midlength and sclerotized at anterior margin, without posteromedial lobe. In lateral view, not elevated (Figs. 3 b���3c). Tergum 10 strongly sclerotized at anterior margin, with a deep subtriangular indentation (Figs. 3a, 3d). Sternum 9 bearing an elliptical, hairy medium sized to large, longer than wide vesicle, posteriorly nearly reaching 1/2 of the subgenital plate. Subgenital plate semi-elliptical with sclerotized margins (Figs. 3b, 6 a���6b). Paraprocts apical part medium long and tapering. Fusion plate long and narrow (Figs. 3b, 5d). The main epiproct sclerite generally quadrate, corners obtuse, bears a hook at the apex. Concavity between main sclerites trapezoidal. Additionally, the inner margin of main sclerite slightly constricted at 1/6 and dilated at 5/6 (Figs. 3e, 4b, 5 a���5c). In frontal view, basal sclerite divided from two main epiproct sclerites, with a medial opening between the two main epiproct sclerites (Fig. 4a). In the lateral view, the main epiproct sclerite subtriangular, the basis of apical flattened but the hook obvious (Figs. 3c, 5b). In the ventral view, the main epiproct sclerite cleft and rectangular (Fig. 5d). Female (Figs. 1, 7). Body length 5.5���5.6 mm, forewing length 5.6���5.7 mm, hindwing length 5.0��� 5.1 mm. Terga 2���10 sclerotized anterior margin, and with membranous medial portion on terga 2���8 (Fig. 1). Sternum 7 forming a large trapezoidal sclerite, covering 3/4 width of the sternum, the lateral margin sinuous, a small slender subrectangular sclerite present on each side of the plate. The subgenital plate triangular and wide, not protruding beyond sternum 8, anterior to the plate occurring a subtriangular medial sclerite, the sclerite as wide as the membranous area of it. Sternum 8 with two lateral sclerites that extend medially, the lateral margin of the sclerites covering most of the length of the sternum (Fig. 7). Type Material. Paratypes: 5 males and 4 females, same locality and data as holotype, 2 fe- males, same locality and collector, 22. III. 2016. Distribution. Yunnan Province, China. The type series is only known from a stream draining Baima Snow Mountain in northwestern Yunnan Province, an area of alpine coniferous forests. Etymology. The species refers to the province where the type locality of the new species is located. Remarks. The new species is generally similar to E. stigmatica. The male genitalia of the E. yunnana is most similar to the E. s. stigmatica. The main sclerite of epiproct of E. yunnana is subquadrate in dorsal view, whereas the epiproct of E. s. stigmatica epiproct is rounded. In frontal view, the epiproct of E. yunnana lacks a rounded medial opening that occurs in E. s. stigmatica. The opening between the two main epiproct sclerites of E. s. stigmatica is narrow, but in E. yunnana, it is wide and its inner margin straight. The subgenital plates of the females of both species are different. The two lateral sclerites in E. s. stigmatica is smaller than that in E. yunnana. The forewing of E. s. stigmatica has six crossveins between the C vein and Sc 1 vein, whereas E. yunnana has only two crossveins. In addition, E. yunnana is also similar to E. s. transversa, but male main epiproct sclerite of E. s. transversa is characteristically flattened (both in lateral view and in frontal view). The male of E. yunnana is also similar to E. quattuorsegmentata and E. brevicauda (Judson & Nelson 2012, Mur��nyi et al., 2014) in the variable morphology of the epiproct, but typical specimens differ in the shape of the two main epiproct sclerites, and the opening between the two main epiporct sclerites. A new species of Capniidae, Eucapnopsis yunnana sp. nov., is described and illustrated from Yunnan Province, southwestern China. The relationships with other similar species of the genus are discussed.

Larvae of Capnia zijinshana Du & Chen, 2016 (Capniidae) and Nemoura nankinensis Wu, 1926 (Nemouridae) are described and illustrated based on recently collected specimens collected from Jiangsu Province of southeastern China. These are the first larval descriptions in the family Capniidae and the genus Nemoura Latrielle, 1796 from China. Larval morphology of C. zijinshana is similar to the adults. Larvae of N. nankinensis are consistent with the generic larval definition of previous literature.

Mature larva. Body length 7.0���7.5 mm. General color pale brown, appendages pale (Figs. 2, 3). Head rounded, frontal area covered with pale, soft hairs; clypeus broad and elliptical, with a posterior notch; epicranial suture pale (Figs. 4). Three ocelli somewhat reddish; compound eyes dark and covered with pale, short hairs. Antennae slender, subequal to ⅔ of body length, each segment apically fringed with several short bristles (Fig. 5). Mouthparts typical euholognathan as in Fig. 4C and Fig. 6, glossa and paraglossa of labium knob-shaped, subequal in length (Fig. 4C); labial palp short, three-segmented with longest apical segment; maxillary palp five segmented (Fig. 6A); stipes of maxilla long cylindrical, basal half covered with sparse long bristles; galea hook-shaped, outer margin of apical half fringed with several moderate spines, inner margin glabrous; lacinia semicircular and weakly sclerotized, with long, stout apical teeth, dorsal comb with about 20 long bristles, ventral comb with about 10 long bristles. Mandible with six major unserrated, sclerotized apical teeth, near the apical teeth with a marginal comb of about 13 moderate bristles (Fig. 6 B���D). Cervix elongated and membranous, ventrally with paired lateral cervical sclerites (Fig. 4 A���C). Thoracic terga covered with dense, pale hairs (Fig. 4). Pronotum subquadrate with obtuse corners (Fig. 4A, B), anterior margin narrower than posterior margin and slightly protruded anterolaterally, lateral margins with long hairs; anterior half of pronotum with a curved transverse suture, pattern indistinct, with small dark brown spots together resembling the letter Х. Wing pads of meso- and metanota pale (Fig. 4D, E), triangular with a rounded tip, margined with long bristles. Coxae membranous and glabrous dorsally, but ventrally and laterally with short spines; trochanters ventrally with short spines (Figs. 4C, F, 7). Femora dorsally covered with sparse, short spines (Fig. 7A, C), ventrally with two longitudinal rows of spines along the two ridges respectively near the outer and inner margins (Fig. 7B, D). Tibiae evenly covered with short spines, inner and outer margins with long, thick spines; two large tibial spurs present ventrally (Fig. 7B, D). Outer margin of femora and tibia covered with sparse swimming hairs, the length of which increases in the distal part (Fig. 7B, D). Tarsal segments with sparse short spines on inner margins; mid tarsal segment shortest; basal tarsal segment two times longer than mid tarsal segment; apical tarsal segment longest, two times longer than basal tarsal segment; outer margins of tarsal segments with sparse swimming hairs (Fig. 7B, D). Claws sharp, apically sclerotized (Fig. 7). Abdominal segments covered with pale, short hairs; posterior margin of each tergum fringed with long bristles (Fig. 8); terga and sterna distinctly divided (Fig. 9A, B); terga 1���9 generally dark brown; sterna 1���8 generally pale brown (Figs. 8���9). In male larvae: tergum 10 projected backwards, forming a sharp, apically glabrous process (Fig. 8C); a slender adult epiproct enclosed within the process; a rounded adult vesicle visible below sternum 9; paraprocts kidney-shaped in ventral view. In female larvae: abdominal segments wider than the male (Fig. 3); tergum 10 posteriorly rounded; paraprocts subtriangular in ventral view. Cerci pale, subequal in length to abdomen, each segment with several long apical bristles, length of which does not exceed the segment length (Figs.1, 10A, B). Remarks. Capnia zijinshana is the only known capniid species from southeastern China, being restricted to one small stream in Mt. Zijinshan (Du & Chen 2016, Chen & Song 2019). The larvae are similar to the adults, exhibiting hairy body segments and appendages. Both sexes of the larvae are easily separated by the body shape and terminal modifications. In early January no adults of C. zijinshana were collected near the nearly dry stream. Plecoptera species are documented from 6 longitudinal sites over a 10-year period 2002 - 2012 in a southwestern Missouri Ozark stream, including a Missouri Department of Natural Resources reference reach. Benthos, light trapping, net, and hand collections were used to capture Plecoptera every month of the year with highest sampling Nov - Jun. We collected 5,645 individuals representing 7 families, 17 genera, and 29 species including 4 confirmed species of Capniidae (38% of total), 3 Leuctridae (29%), 2 Taeniopterygidae (1.2%), 1 Nemouridae (0.81%), 3 Chloroperlidae (0.95%), 12 Perlidae (27%), and 5 Perlodidae (3.1%). Allocapnia rickeri, followed by Zealeuctra claasseni, Agnetina capitata, Acroneuria frisoni, and Perlesta decipiens were the most commonly collected species. An expected longitudinal downstream gradient of increasing Plecoptera richness was apparent, ranging from 9 species collected in stream headwaters to 21 species at the most downstream site. Identifiable richness throughout the watershed was highest between January and May (19 species present in April). Plecoptera richness in this stream compares favorably to collections in two high-quality streams in the western Ozarks in northeastern Oklahoma and streams in the Ouachita Mountains of central Arkansas.

Species inhabiting intermittent streams must have life-history traits that confer resistance or resilience to flow cessation or drying. However, we lack basic life-history information for most aquatic invertebrate species, especially those from intermittent streams. I documented the life cycle and distribution of an unusual winter stonefly species, Mesocapnia arizonensis (Capniidae). The species was first described from 6 localities in 1969, but its natural history remained enigmatic. I surveyed >90 streams across the southwestern USA, documented the life cycle of M. arizonensis at 1 locality, and experimentally rehydrated dry streambed sediment in search of dormant stoneflies at another locality. Field surveys expanded the number of localities from 22 to 98, most of which were intermittent with flow durations as brief as 3 mo/y, and extended the known range of the species by 800 km. Nymphs were abundant within days of flow resumption, grew rapidly as a single cohort, and started emerging as adult...

The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of the winter stonefly, Capnia zijinshana (Plecoptera: Capniidae), was sequenced and compared with other stoneflies. The mitogenome of C. zijinshana is 16,310 bp long and contains 37 genes including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, and a control region (CR). The gene arrangement of C. zijinshana and other 12 stonefly mitogenomes is identical with the putative ancestral mitogenome in Drosophila yakuba. Twenty-one of the 22 tRNAs in the C. zijinshana mitogenome could be folded into the typical cloverleaf secondary structure, while the dihydrouridine (DHU) arm of trnS (AGN) was missing. The 1513-bp control region of C. zijinshana contained two potential stem-loop structures and a tandem repeat region. The phylogenetic relationships of 13 species from Plecoptera were analyzed based on the nucleotide sequences of 13 PCGs. The phylogenetic relationships among 13 stoneflies and two mayflies were inferred by Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood methods. C. zijinshana was grouped with another two winter stoneflies, Mesocapnia arizonensis and Apteroperla tikumana. The two analyses both supported the close relationship of Pteronarcyidae and Chloroperlidae, and also supported the sister-group relationship of Styloperlidae and Perlidae.

The stonefly Mesocapnia daxingana (Plecoptera: Capniidae) is a new species and the capniid genus Mesocapnia are first reported from China. Their potential use as biomonitoring for water quality assessment is well-known. In this study, we present the mitogenome of M. daxingana, which is 15,524 bp in length and consists of 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNAs, 22 transfer RNAs and a partial control region (719 bp). All genes have the similar locations and strands with that of other published stoneflies. The nucleotide composition is biased toward A and T, with 68.1% of A + T content. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that M. daxingana is closely related to Mesocapnia arizonensis and Apteroperla tikumana. Both maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses showed strong support for a monophyletic Capniidae, and other five stonefly family formed a monophyletic group.

SummaryThe winter stonefly genus Isocapnia Banks, 1938​​​ is mainly distributed in western North America and eastern Asia, but has never been reported from China. In this paper, we report, describe and illustrate a new species of this genus, I. anguis n. sp. from Sichuan Province of China. This is the first record for the genus Isocapnia from China, extending the distribution of Isocapnia into the southwestern China. An identification key to all the Isocapnia species from Asia is provided.​​​

Sasquacapnia Baumann & Broome, New genus Type species Capnia (Bolshecapnia) sasquatchi (Ricker, 1965) = Sasquacapnia sasquatchi (Ricker) by present designation Male characteristics: Epiproct long, slender and curved dorsad near mid-length (Figs. 56, 60, 67, 71). A pair of dorsal sclerites arise from the epiproct base and extend forward for approximately a third or more of the epiproct length (Fig. 57, 72); sclerites narrow and may be acute at their tips. Epiproct narrows subapically and expands at the apex; apical area contains extrudable membranous material that may be partially or fully exposed (Figs. 64, 69). Abdominal terga without dorsal knobs; tergum 9 with patches of long setae (Figs. 55, 61). Vesicle (n = 5). Oval in outline, constricted at the base and covered with thick setae (Fig. 65). Female characteristics: Subgenital plate usually reaching anterior margin of sternum 9; margin rounded and notched in S. missiona (Fig. 66) and truncate in S. sasquatchi (fig. 14 in Baumann & Potter 2007). Wings: As noted above, the wing venation for Sasquacapnia is indistinguishable from that of Bolshecapnia and Eurekapnia. Larval characteristics: Unknown. Current species: S. missiona, S. sasquatchi Distribution: Known from British Columbia, Montana and Washington (DeWalt et al. 2018). Etymology: The generic name, Sasquacapnia, is based on “Sasquatchi”, a species name assigned by Ricker (1965) and formed from the name of the “yeti- like forest giants of the Fraser River valley Salish Indian legends” (Ricker 1965).

This structure is an apically narrowed, tongue-shaped process, about twice as wide at midlength as near the apical margin (Figs. 33-34); the structure extends beyond the anterior margin of sternum 9 (see fig. 169 in Baumann et al. 1977), and is hairless except for a few scattered long setae on the basal half. Eurekapnia Stark & Broome, New genus Type species: Capnia maculata Jewett, 1954 = Eurekapnia maculata (Jewett) by monotypy. Male characteristics: 1. The male epiproct is almost uniformly slender from base to apex except for an apical area capable of being folded laterally to increase the apical width (Figs. 37, 40-42). 2. The ventral and lateral margins of the finger-like epiproct are formed by a pair of thick sclerites that are separated along the dorsum by a wide groove (Figs. 37-40); width of the groove varies based on position of the sclerites (compare Figs. 51-52). 3. Abdominal tergum 9 bears a pair of conical knobs separated by a gap slightly wider than the folded epiproct tip (Figs. 37-38, 40, 43, 45). 4. The ventral vesicle is almost circular in outline and is attached to the intersegmental membrane between sterna 8 and 9 (Figs. 47-48). The vesicle surface is covered with thick setae. Female characteristics: 1. The subgenital plate is uniformly pigmented and extends across the entire width of sternum 8 between the two pleural membranes (Figs. 35-36). 2. The posterior margin of the plate is rounded and scarcely exceeds the posterior margin of sternum 8. Wings: 1. The venation of E. maculata, the only known species, is very similar to that of Bolshecapnia and Sasquacapnia, however the wings of Eurekapnia have scattered brown maculations that give them a distinctive appearance. Larval characteristics: Undescribed. Currently recognized species: E. maculata Distribution: Known only from California (DeWalt et al. 2018). Etymology: The generic name, Eurekapnia, is based on the California state motto, “Eureka”, a Greek word whose literal meaning is defined as “I have found it”.
