Finite element models of the burnishing process for galvanized Advanced High-Strength Steels (AHSS) sheets were developed. To reduce the number of points that describe a real surface profile, optimization algorithms were implemented, considering three sequential stages: (1) surface profile filter, (2) mean line determination and, (3) eight roughness parameters validation. The finite element models developed accurately reproduce the experimental roughness profile, obtained with different burnishing forces. Also, the effect of the real surface roughness on the residual stress distribution was numerically investigated by considering the interaction between the coating layer present on the steel. The simulation showed that considering the real surface strongly influences the residual stress profile on the surface and to a certain depth.

Research shows that the global society as organized today, with our current technological and economic system, is impossible to sustain. We are living in an era in which human activities in highly industrialized countries are responsible for overshooting several planetary boundaries, with poorer communities contributing the least to the problems but being impacted the most. At the same time, technical and economic gains fail to provide society at large with equal opportunities and improved quality of life. This article describes approaches taken in computing education to address the issue of sustainability. It presents results of a systematic review of the literature on sustainability in computing education. From a set of 572 publications extracted from six large digital libraries plus snowballing, we distilled and analyzed 89 relevant primary studies. Using an inductive and deductive thematic analysis, we study: (1) conceptions of sustainability, computing, and education; (2) implementations of sustainability in computing education; and (3) research on sustainability in computing education. We present a framework capturing learning objectives and outcomes as well as pedagogical methods for sustainability in computing education. These results can be mapped to existing standards and curricula in future work. We find that only a few of the articles engage with the challenges as calling for drastic systemic change, along with radically new understandings of computing and education. We suggest that future work should connect to the substantial body of critical theory, such as feminist theories of science and technology. Existing research on sustainability in computing education may be considered rather immature, as the majority of articles are experience reports with limited empirical research.

Abstract Modern plant breeding, such as genomic selection and gene editing, is based on the knowledge of the genetic architecture of desired traits. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis, which combines high throughput phenotyping and genotyping of segregating populations, is a powerful tool to identify these genetic determinants and to decipher the underlying mechanisms. However, meiotic recombination, which shuffles genetic information between generations, is limited: Typically only one to two exchange points, called crossovers, occur between a pair of homologous chromosomes. Here we test the effect on QTL analysis of boosting recombination, by mutating the anti-crossover factors RECQ4 and FIGL1 in Arabidopsis thaliana full hybrids and lines in which a single chromosome is hybrid. We show that increasing recombination ~6-fold empowers the detection and resolution of QTLs, reaching the gene scale with only a few hundred plants. Further, enhanced recombination unmasks some secondary QTLs undetected under normal recombination. These results show the benefits of enhanced recombination to decipher the genetic bases of traits.

In 2020, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is of interest to understand how students perceived the access, use, and utility of digital tools in online teaching. This study provides an insight into the needs of students in adjusting to online teaching. This study presents the methodological design of the course "Industrial Hygiene I," part of a technology-based engineering bachelor's degree from Universidad Católica del Norte (Chile). Once the theoretical framework was established, three surveys were designed throughout the course to measure students' perceptions of the access, use, and utility of digital tools used in online teaching during the pandemic. Thirty-five students participated in this quantitative study. Following a data analysis, it was observed that 46% of students use their cell phones to access virtual classes and more than 50% are dissatisfied with the internet connection; therefore, it was necessary to adapt the learning methodology. After that, more than 50% of the students said that they preferred a flipped classroom over traditional methodology. In addition, the quality of the course was not affected by using the internet (60%), and the methodology generates advantages in terms of learning (72%). These findings have several implications in both the design of different subjects in the engineering degree and the practice of different learning methods. Future hybrid teaching designs require taking up the challenges of both improving technology-supported teaching and assessing competence in the same context.

Background and purposePsoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory skin disease that significantly impacts patients’ quality of life. The integration of telepharmacy has the potential to enhance patient care by providing flexible and personalized pharmaceutical follow-up. This study (TELEPROM Psoriasis) evaluates a telepharmacy model for evaluating electronic Patient-Reported outcomes (ePROMs) for individuals with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in Spain with biological treatment.Experimental approachThis multicenter prospective quasi-experimental study included 258 adult patients initiating or switching biological/immunomodulatory therapy for moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. Patients were recruited from public hospitals in Spain and monitored through the NAVETA telepharmacy platform over a six-month period. PROMs assessed were the Psoriasis Symptoms and Signs Diary and the Dermatology Life Quality Index at baseline, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, Student’s t-test, multiple regression, and machine learning algorithms to evaluate ePROMs evolution and response and satisfaction with Telepharmacy follow up.Key resultsThe analysis revealed significant influences of gender, employment status, educational level, and daily activity, but no effect of age, on responses to Patient-Reported Outcomes questionnaires. Machine learning models, particularly Random Forest (AUC = 0.98) and Support Vector Machine (AUC = 0.96), effectively predicted patient engagement. DLQI scores significantly decreased from 9.33 ± 7.75 at baseline to 4.34 ± 5.86 at 6 months. Similarly, the PSSD - 7 Days questionnaire showed major reductions, with scores dropping from 55.43 ± 29.94 to 30.73 ± 30.66 at 6 months, and 53% of patients reaching a score of 20 or less. Notably, women reported worse scores at all time points compared to men. Regression analysis explained only 13.2% of the variance in PROMs scores, identifying Employment Status and BMI Range as key contributors.ConclusionThis study demonstrates the efficacy of biologic treatments in significantly improving HRQoL for psoriasis patients. Addressing demographic variables, such as gender, is key for optimizing treatment outcomes and improving ePROMs response rates. Tailored strategies and ML techniques can help identify low-engagement patients and mitigate disparities. Integrating sociodemographic factors into clinical decision-making and patient engagement strategies is fundamental for delivering equitable and comprehensive care.

Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is characterized by thrombocytopenia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and target organ damage. Pregnancy is associated with several forms of TMA, including preeclampsia (PE), HELLP syndrome, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). When HUS is secondary to a deregulation of the alternative complement pathway, it is known as atypical HUS (aHUS). Differential diagnosis is challenging, as these forms share clinical characteristics. However, early diagnosis is crucial for a specific treatment to be established and improve prognosis.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate whether long stays in non-European countries influence the composition, diversity, and dynamics of gut microbiota, considering the potential impact of travelling, close contact with new people, and consumption of water and food. Methods: Two prospective cohorts were analyzed: (i) A longitudinal cohort comprising long-term travellers who provided fecal samples before and after their travels. (ii) A cohort consisting of long-term travellers and recently arrived migrants from non-European countries, which was compared with non-traveller controls. Each participant self-collected fecal samples and provided demographic and epidemiological data. Microbiota was characterized through 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. Results: The longitudinal cohort comprised 17 subjects. A trend toward higher bacterial diversity was observed after travelling (Shannon index 3.12vs3.26). When comparing 84 travellers/migrants with 97 non-travellers, a confirmed association of higher diversity levels with travelling was observed (Phylogenetic diversity: 22.1vs20.9). Specific genera enriched in travellers' gut microbiota were identified, including Escherichia/Shigella, Bacteroides, and Parabacteroides. El diagnóstico diferencial es complejo, ya que comparten características clínicas, siendo importante realizarlo precozmente para instaurar tratamiento específico y mejorar el pronóstico.

Background: Nursing students need to acquire knowledge through active methods that promote critical thinking and decision making. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether there are differences in the acquisition of knowledge by nursing students between active face-to-face or virtual teaching methods. Methods: In this comparative study, nursing students enrolled in the psychology course were divided into two groups: a face-to-face group that received active teaching methods and a virtual group. The virtual group was exposed to the Effective Learning Strategy (ELS), which included seminars based on video content through the Virtual Campus and answering questions using the H5P tool. In addition, participants engaged in reflection tasks on the content. Covariate data were collected, and knowledge tests were administered to both groups before and after the course. After three months, subjects were re-evaluated with a final exam to assess content retention. Results: A total of 280 students were randomized. No differences were found in students’ scores at the end of the knowledge test or in their final grades in the subject. Having study habits (b = 0.12, p = 0.03) and social support from relevant people (b = 0.09; p = 0.03) were associated with better post-intervention scores, and inversely with social support from friends (b = −0.12, p < 0.01). Final grades were inversely associated with digital safety literacy (b = −0.101, p = 0.01). No factors were associated with the scores of each group separately. Conclusions: The ELS virtual active learning model is as effective as face-to-face active learning methods for teaching psychology to first-year nursing students. This study was not registered.

In recent years, the implementation of CO2 capture systems has increased. To reduce the costs and the footprint of the processes, different industrial wastes are successfully proposed for CO2 capture, such as gypsum from desulfurization units. This gypsum undergoes an aqueous carbonation process for CO2 capture, producing an added-value solid material that can be valorized. In this work, panels have been manufactured with a replacement of (5 and 20%) commercial gypsum and all the compositions kept the water/solid ratio constant (0.45). The density, surface hardness, resistance to compression, bending, and fire resistance of 2 cm thick panels have been determined. The addition of the waste after the CO2 capture diminishes the density and mechanical strength. However, it fulfills the requirements of the different European regulations and diminishes 56% of the thermal conductivity when 20%wt of waste is used. Although the CO2 waste is decomposed endothermically at 650 °C, the fire resistance decreases by 18% when 20%wt. is added, which allows us to establish that these wastes can be used in fire-resistant panels. An environmental life cycle assessment was conducted by analyzing a recycling case in Spain. The results indicate that the material with CO2 capture waste offers no environmental advantage over gypsum unless the production plant is located within 200 km of the waste source, with transportation being the key factor.

Introduction Insight is a field of interest in psychosis, due to its influence on the course and prognosis of the desease and as well as adherence to treatment. Objectives The present work aims to evaluate the influence of cognitive and psychopathological variables on awareness of illness in first psychotic episodes. Methods It is a cross-sectional study of a sample of 26 patients with diagnosis of a first psychotic episode admitted in a Brief Hospitalization Unit, who have been evaluated using the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS), the Screening for Cognitive Impairment (SCIP) and the Scale of Non-awareness of Mental Disorder (SUMD). Results A positive correlation was found between SUMD and negative PANSS (the worse insight, the greater negative psychopathology) and between the level of cognitive performance and the awareness of having negative symptoms (affective blunting, anhedonia and associability) and their attribution to the desease. Conclusions This findings suggest the importance of addressing awareness of negative symptoms from the first episodes in psychoeducational family therapy and rehabilitation programs, taking into account that this process is hindered by the cognitive dysfunctions. Summary: Nitric oxide (NO) is a gasotransmitter required in a broad range of mechanisms controlling plant development and stress conditions. However, little is known about the specific role of this signaling molecule during lipid storage in the seeds. Here, we show that NO is accumulated in developing embryos and regulates the fatty acid profile through the stabilization of the basic/leucine zipper transcription factor bZIP67. NO and nitro-linolenic acid target and accumulate bZIP67 to induce the downstream expression of FAD3 desaturase, which is misregulated in a non-nitrosylable version of the protein. Moreover, the post-translational modification of bZIP67 is reversible by the trans-denitrosylation activity of peroxiredoxin IIE and defines a feedback mechanism for bZIP67 redox regulation. These findings provide a molecular framework to control the seed fatty acid profile caused by NO, and evidence of the in vivo functionality of nitro-fatty acids during plant developmental signaling.
