During the Permian-Triassic transition, dramatic environmental changes occurred, including the segmentation of Pangaea and the beginning of the Alpine orogenic cycle with widespread magmatism and tectonic activity. The Permian-Triassic succession deposited in the northern (palaeo-) Gondwana is now exposed in the inner Northern Apennines where it crops out discontinuously in the Middle Tuscan Ridge, a NS-oriented morphotectonic feature mainly formed by blue-schist and green-schist facies metamorphic rocks. In this paper, we describe a previously unreported late Palaeozoic succession exposed in the central part of the Middle Tuscan Ridge: the Montagnola Senese Ridge. This succession provides information concerning the enigmatic late Palaeozoic units exposed in southern Tuscany, and permits the age constraint of continentalization at the Permian-Triassic boundary with associated magmatism. Specifically, by integrating stratigraphic, structural, and petrographic data, we describe a siliciclastic, volcanoclastic-to-carbonate succession which recorded the transition from marine sedimentation to the typical continental, red-beds of the Verrucano tectofacies. Additionally, deformational features, metamorphism and age of the succession are discussed in terms of its tectono-sedimentary evolution and implications for the Palaeozoic-Triassic setting of the central Pangaea sector currently exposed in southern Tuscany. The results allow us to recognize a middle-late Permian pre-Verrucano succession, and to date the transition to continental facies as latest Permian. The microflora permits correlation of the pre-Verrucano succession to the late Palaeozoic units of the inner Northern Apennines, and establishes the diachronous nature of the Verrucano tectofacies exposed in the inner Northern Apennines. Deposition of terrestrial carbonate (i.e. travertine) and silica sinter in geothermal areas is always closely linked to the presence of relevant crustal structures which enhance the permeability in the upper crust favouring the upflow of fluids to the surface. Most travertine deposits are originated by geothermal fluids stored within carbonate reservoirs in continental crust, and their morphology and areal distribution provide useful information on geometry, kinematics, and age of faults which control the fluid flow. In this paper, we focus on the tectonic control on a travertine depositional system, associated with silica sinter, developing in oceanic crust, in the Lýsuskarð volcano-geothermal area on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, West Iceland. The presence of HCO3 and Ca in the geothermal fluids is related to chemical-physical processes linked to fluid–rock interaction that occurs in the geothermal reservoir made up of tholeiitic basalt, by fluids enriched in CO2 of deep origin (i.e. magmatic). Travertine deposits consist of mounds and slopes, which are still in formation and overlie the silica sinter deposits. Both sinter and travertine deposits derive from thermal springs aligned according to two trends: NNE-SSW and WNW-ESE. This evidence suggests the occurrence of buried, permeable, and thus active faults, which control the circulation of fluids containing HCO3 and Ca. Faults are near parallel to those which define the rift systems and transform zones in Iceland, and probably comprise the still active sector of the abandoned transform zone that, starting with the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, interrupts eastward the northern continuation of the western and eastern rift-zones in the south-central Iceland. The sedimentary characteristics of the special interlayer contained in the section of the Sparkling Lake dam revealed by the 8 August Jiuzhaigou earthquake in 2017 are obviously different from the tufa in the dam body, and they are considered to be historic flood relics. Based on the study of the particulate matter from the 8 August Jiuzhaigou earthquake, this study combined comparative petrographic, mineralogical, geochemical, and chronological studies of the special interbedded sediments of the Sparkling Lake dam with other genetic samples to obtain homology information and genetic links and to explore the tufa depositional dynamics and earthquake disaster subsidence. The paleoseismic benefit in the discontinuity layer was explored, and the paleoseismic information embedded in the profiles was extracted, providing a new idea for reconstructing the paleoseismic events in the tufa deposition sequence. According to X-ray diffraction, laser particle size analysis, and scanning electron microscope experiments, the particulate matter in the Jiuzhaigou mountains has its own specific mineralogical characteristics. The mineral composition of the particulate matter is basically calcite. The particle size is large, and single particles are mostly angular and subangular. The fracture morphology observed under the single-particle microscope was uneven, showing the characteristics of the dust caused by earthquake disasters. The geochemical analysis data show that the distribution patterns of rare earth elements in different types of particulate matter in the same area have similar characteristics. Moreover, an analysis of the elements Rb, Sr, and Ba shows that the particulate matter in Jiuzhaigou has a strong correlation (R2 = 0.9941), indicating the stability and uniformity of the material source. The source of the particulate matter was limestone of the carbonate strata from the Devonian to the Triassic. Combined with mineralogy and grain size morphology, the interbedded particles in the tufa depositional profile have the potential application of paleoseismic archives to record extreme seismic events. According to the chronological data of the special interlayer sediments in the tufa dam body, the paleoseismic age is inferred to be 1220 ± 30 BP. Therefore, the tufa bedding can be related to the paleoearthquake, and the special interlayer of the tufa section can be used to reconstruct paleoearthquakes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
