Hydrovoltaic power generation from liquid water and ambient moisture has attracted considerable research efforts. However, there is still limited consensus on the optimal material properties required to maximize the power output. Here, we used laminates of two different phases of layered MoS$_2$ -- metallic 1T' and semiconducting 2H -- as representative systems to investigate the critical influence of specific characteristics, such as hydrophilicity, interlayer channels, and structure, on the hydrovoltaic performance. The metallic 1T' phase was synthesized via a chemical exfoliation process and assembled into laminates, which can then be converted to the semiconducting 2H phase by thermal annealing. Under liquid water conditions, the 1T' laminates, having a channel size of 6 angstroms, achieved a peak power density of 2.0 mW m$^{-2}$, significantly outperforming the 2H phase, lacking defined channels, that produced a power of 2.4 microW m$^{-2}$. Our theoretical analysis suggests that energy generation in these hydrophilic materials primarily arises from electro-kinetic and surface diffusion mechanisms. Metasurfaces, with their ability to control electromagnetic waves, hold immense potential in optical device design, especially for applications requiring precise control over dispersion. This work introduces an approach to dispersion engineering using heterogeneous freeform metasurfaces, which overcomes the limitations of conventional metasurfaces that often suffer from poor transmission, narrow bandwidth, and restricted polarization responses. By transitioning from single-layer, canonical meta-atoms to bilayer architectures with non-intuitive geometries, our design decouples intrinsic material properties (refractive index and group index), enabling independent engineering of phase and group delays as well as higher-order dispersion properties, while achieving high-efficiency under arbitrary polarization states. We implement a two-stage multi-objective optimization process to generate libraries of meta-atoms, which are then utilized for the rapid design of dispersion-engineered metasurfaces. Additionally, we present a bilayer metasurface stacking technique, paving the way for the realization of high-performance, dispersion-engineered optical devices. Our approach is validated through the demonstration of metasurfaces exhibiting superior chromatic aberration correction and broadband performance, with over 81% averaged efficiency across the 420-nm visible-to-near-infrared bandwidth. Our synergistic combination of advanced design physics, powerful freeform optimization methods, and bi-layer nanofabrication techniques represents a significant breakthrough compared to the state-of-the-art while opening new possibilities for broadband metasurface applications.

We consider the problem of reconstructing a $H\times W\times 31$ hyperspectral image from a $H\times W$ grayscale snapshot measurement that is captured using a single diffractive optic and a filterless panchromatic photosensor. This problem is severely ill-posed, and we present the first model that is able to produce high-quality results. We train a conditional denoising diffusion model that maps a small grayscale measurement patch to a hyperspectral patch. We then deploy the model to many patches in parallel, using global physics-based guidance to synchronize the patch predictions. Our model can be trained using small hyperspectral datasets and then deployed to reconstruct hyperspectral images of arbitrary size. Also, by drawing multiple samples with different seeds, our model produces useful uncertainty maps. We show that our model achieves state-of-the-art performance on previous snapshot hyperspectral benchmarks where reconstruction is better conditioned. Our work lays the foundation for a new class of high-resolution hyperspectral imagers that are compact and light-efficient.

I study Higgs bundles over smooth projective varieties defined on an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. I prove ``Lefschetz principle''-type theorems for semistable Higgs sheaves and curve semistable Higgs bundles. I give an application to variates whose canonical bundle is ample, showing stability of the so-called Simpson System. From all this I obtain another proof of the Guggenheimer-Yau inequality. Where this inequality is saturated, I prove that the discriminant class of the Simpson system vanishes. Achieving precise control of light intensity in 3D volumes is highly in demand in many applications in optics. Various wavefront shaping techniques have been utilized to reconstruct a target amplitude profile within a 3D space. However, these techniques are intrinsically limited by cross-talk and often rely on optimization methods to improve the reconstruction quality. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a new wavefront shaping method based on interfering the optimum orthogonal communication modes connecting a source plane and a receiving volume. These optimum modes are computed from the singular value decomposition of a coupling operator that connects each point at the source plane to another one in the receiving volume. The modes comprise a pair of source and receiving eigenfunctions, each one forming a complete orthogonal basis for their respective spaces. We utilize these modes to construct arbitrarily chosen 2D and 3D structured light waves within the output receiving volume and optically generate these waves using a spatial light modulator. Our generated intensity profiles exhibit low cross-talk, high fidelity, and high contrast. We envision our work to inspire new directions in any domain that requires controlling light intensity in 3D with high precision such as in holography, microscopy, metrology, light-matter interactions, and optical sensing.

Interferometers are essential tools to measure and shape optical fields, and are widely used in optical metrology, sensing, laser physics, and quantum mechanics. They superimpose waves with a mutual phase delay, resulting in a change in light intensity. A frequency-dependent phase delay then allows to shape the spectrum of light, which is essential for filtering, routing, wave shaping, or multiplexing. Simple Mach-Zehnder interferometers superimpose spatial waves and typically generate an output intensity that depends sinusoidally on frequency, limiting the capabilities for spectral engineering. Here, we present a novel framework that uses the interference of multiple transverse modes in a single multimode waveguide to achieve arbitrary spectral shapes in a compact geometry. Through the design of corrugated gratings, these modes couple to each other, allowing the exchange of energy similar to a beam splitter, facilitating easy handling of multiple modes. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate narrow-linewidth spectra with independently tunable free spectral range and linewidth, as well as independent spectral shapes for various transverse modes. Our methodology can be applied to orthogonal optical modes of different orders, polarization, and angular momentum, and holds promise for sensing, optical metrology, calibration, and computing., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

Mult-layered meta-optics have enabled complex wavefront shaping beyond their single layer counterpart owing to the additional design variables afforded by each plane. For instance, complex amplitude modulation, generalized polarization transformations, and wide field of view are key attributes that fundamentally require multi-plane wavefront matching. Nevertheless, existing embodiments of bilayer metasurfaces have relied on configurations which suffer from Fresnel reflections, low mode confinement, or undesired resonances which compromise the intended response. Here, we introduce bilayer metasurfaces made of free-standing meta-atoms working in the visible spectrum. We demonstrate their use in wavefront shaping of linearly polarized light using pure geometric phase with diffraction efficiency of 80 % expanding previous literature on Pancharatnam-Berry phase metasurfaces which rely on circularly or elliptically polarized illumination. The fabrication relies on a two-step lithography and selective development processes which yield free standing, bilayer stacked metasurfaces, of 1200 nm total thickness. The metasurfaces comprise TiO2 nanofins with vertical side walls. Solitons, as coherent structures that maintain their shape while traveling at constant velocity, are ubiquitous across various branches of physics, from fluid dynamics to quantum fields. However, it is within the realm of optics where solitons have not only served as a primary testbed for understanding solitary wave phenomena but have also transitioned into applications ranging from telecommunications to metrology. In the optical domain, temporal solitons are localized light pulses, self-reinforcing via a delicate balance between nonlinearity and dispersion. Among the many systems hosting temporal solitons, active optical resonators stand out due to their inherent gain medium, enabling to actively sustain solitons. Unlike conventional modelocked lasers, active resonators offer a richer landscape for soliton dynamics through hybrid driving schemes, such as coupling to passive cavities or under external optical injection, affording them unparalleled control and versatility. We discuss key advantages of these systems, with a particular focus on quantum cascade lasers as a promising soliton technology within the class of active resonators. By exploring diverse architectures from traditional Fabry-Perot cavities to racetrack devices operated under external injection, we present the current state-of-the-art and future directions for soliton-based sources in the realm of semiconductor lasers and hybrid integrated photonic systems.

Coupling is an essential mechanism that drives complexity in natural systems, transforming single, non-interacting elements into intricate networks with rich physical properties. Here, we demonstrate a chip-scale coupled laser system that exhibits complex optical states impossible to achieve in an uncoupled system. We show that a pair of coupled semiconductor ring lasers spontaneously forms a frequency comb consisting of the hybridized modes of its coupled cavity, exhibiting a large number of phase-locked tones that anticross with one another. Experimental coherent waveform reconstruction reveals that the hybridized frequency comb manifests itself as pairs of bright and dark picosecond-long solitons circulating simultaneously. The dark and bright solitons exit the coupled cavity at the same time, leading to breathing bright solitons temporally overlapped with their dark soliton counterparts - a state inaccessible for a single, free-running laser. Our results demonstrate that the rules that govern allowable states of light can be broken by simply coupling elements together, paving the way for the design of more complex networks of coupled on-chip lasers., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

We present our numerical simulation approach for the End-to-End (E2E) model applied to various astronomical spectrographs, such as SOXS (ESO-NTT), CUBES (ESO-VLT), and ANDES (ESO-ELT), covering multiple wavelength regions. The E2E model aim at simulating the expected astronomical observations starting from the radiation of the scientific sources (or calibration sources) up to the raw-frame data produced by the detectors. The comprehensive description includes E2E architecture, computational models, and tools for rendering the simulated frames. Collaboration with Data Reduction Software (DRS) teams is discussed, along with efforts to meet instrument requirements. SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) will be the new medium-resolution (R 4500 for 1 slit), high-efficiency, wide-band spectrograph for the ESO NTT at La Silla Observatory, Chile. It will be dedicated to the follow-up of any kind of transient events, ensuring fast time, high efficiency, and availability. It consists of a central structure (common path) that supports two spectrographs optimized for the UV-Visible and a Near-Infrared range. Attached to the common path is the Acquisition and Guiding Camera system (AC), equipped with a filter wheel that can provide science-grade imaging and moderate high-speed photometry. The AC Unit was integrated and aligned during the summer months of 2022 and has since been mounted in the NTTs telescope simulator. SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) is the new single object spectrograph for the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT) at the La Silla Observatory, able to cover simultaneously both the UV-VIS and NIR bands (350-2000 nm). The instrument is currently in the integration and test phase, approaching the Preliminary Acceptance in Europe (PAE) before shipment to Chile for commissioning. After the assembly and preliminary test of the control electronics at INAF - Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte (Napoli), the two main control cabinets of SOXS are now hosted in Padova, connected to the real hardware. This contribution describes the final electronic cabinets layout, the control strategy and the different integration phases, waiting for the Preliminary Acceptance in Europe and the installation of the instrument in Chile.

The Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) will be the specialized facility to observe any transient event with a flexible scheduler at the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT) at La Silla, Chile. SOXS is a single object spectrograph offering simultaneous spectral coverage in UV-VIS (350-850 nm) and NIR (800-2000 nm) wavelength regimes with an average of R~4500 for a 1arcsec slit. SOXS also has imaging capabilities in the visible wavelength regime. Currently, SOXS is being integrated at the INAF-Astronomical Observatory of Padova. Subsystem- and system-level tests and verification are ongoing to ensure and confirm that every requirement and performance are met. In this paper, we report on the integration and verification of SOXS as the team and the instrument prepare for the Preliminary Acceptance Europe (PAE).

The Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) is a single object spectrograph, built by an international consortium for the 3.58-m ESO New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory [1]. It offers a simultaneous spectral coverage over 350-2000 nm, with two separate spectrographs. In this paper we present the status of the Near InfraRed (NIR) cryogenic echelle cross-dispersed spectrograph [1], in the range 0.80-2.00 {\mu}m with 15 orders, equipped with an 2k x 2k Hawaii H2RG IR array from Teledyne, working at 40K, that is currently assembled and tested on the SOXS instrument, in the premises of INAF in Padova. We present the advancements in the development of the scheduler for the Son Of X-shooter instrument at the ESO-NTT 3.58-m telescope in La Silla, Chile. SOXS is designed as a single-object spectroscopic facility and features a high-efficiency spectrograph with two arms covering the spectral range of 350-2000 nm and a mean resolving power of approximately R=4500. It will conduct UV-visible and near-infrared follow-up observations of astrophysical transients, drawing from a broad pool of targets accessible through the streaming services of wide-field telescopes, both current and future, as well as high-energy satellites. The instrument will cater to various scientific objectives within the astrophysical community, each entailing specific requirements for observation planning. SOXS will operate at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in La Silla, without the presence of astronomers on the mountain. This poses a unique challenge for the scheduling process, demanding a fully automated algorithm that is autonomously interacting with the appropriate databases and the La Silla Weather API, and is capable of presenting the operator not only with an ordered list of optimal targets (in terms of observing constraints) but also with optimal backups in the event of changing weather conditions. This imposes the necessity for a scheduler with rapid-response capabilities without compromising the optimization process, ensuring the high quality of observations and best use of the time at the telescope. We thus developed a new highly available and scalable architecture, implementing API Restful applications like Docker Containers, API Gateway, and Python-based Flask frameworks. We provide an overview of the current state of the scheduler, which is now ready for the approaching on-site testing during Commissioning phase, along with insights into its web interface and preliminary performance tests.

The SOXS spectrograph, designed for the ESO NTT telescope, operates in both the optical (UV-VIS: 350-850 nm) and NIR (800-2000 nm) bands. It details the system's performance evaluation, including key metrics such as gain, readout noise, and linearity, and highlights the advancements made in the upgraded acquisition system. The testing process, conducted in the Padua laboratory, involved comprehensive simulations of the telescope environment to ensure the results closely resemble those expected at the ESO-NTT telescope. This paper presents the opto-mechanical integration and alignment, functional and optical performance verification of the NIR arm of Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) instrument. SOXS will be a single object spectroscopic facility for the ESO-NTT 3.6-m telescope, made by two arms high efficiency spectrographs, able to cover the spectral range 350 2050 nm with a mean resolving power R~4500. In particular the NIR arm is a cryogenic echelle cross-dispersed spectrograph spanning the 780-2050 nm range. We describe the integration and alignment method performed to assemble the different opto-mechanical elements and their installation on the NIR vacuum vessel, which mostly relies on mechanical characterization. The tests done to assess the image quality, linear dispersion and orders trace in laboratory conditions are summarized. The full optical performance verification, namely echellogram format, image quality and resulting spectral resolving power in the whole NIR arm (optical path and science detector) is detailed. SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) is the new ESO instrument that is going to be installed on the 3.58-m New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory. SOXS is a single object spectrograph offering a wide simultaneous spectral coverage from U- to H-band. Although such an instrument may have potentially a large variety of applications, the consortium designed it with a clear science case: it is going to provide the spectroscopic counterparts to the ongoing and upcoming imaging surveys, becoming one of the main follow-up instruments in the Southern hemisphere for the classification and characterization of transients. The NTT+SOXS system is specialized to observe all transients and variable sources discovered by imaging surveys with a flexible schedule maintained by the consortium, based on a remote scheduler which will interface with the observatory software infrastructure. SOXS is realized timely to be highly synergic with transients discovery machines like the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. The instrument has been integrated and tested in Italy, collecting and assembling subsystems coming from all partners spread over six countries in three continents. The first preparatory activities in Chile have been completed at the telescope. The Instrument Control Software of SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter), the forthcoming spectrograph for the ESO New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory, has reached a mature state of development and is approaching the crucial Preliminary Acceptance in Europe phase. Now that all the subsystems have been integrated in the laboratories of the Padova Astronomical Observatory, the team operates for testing purposes with the whole instrument at both engineering and scientific level. These activities will make use of a set of software peculiarities that will be discussed in this contribution. Optical singularities, which are positions within an electromagnetic field where certain field parameters become undefined, hold significant potential for applications in areas such as super-resolution microscopy, sensing, and communication. This potential stems from their high field confinement and characteristic rapidly-changing field distributions. Although the systematic characterization of the first singularities dates back many decades, recent advancements in sub-wavelength wavefront control at optical frequencies have led to a renewed interest in the field, and have substantially expanded the range of known optical singularities and singular structures. However, the diversity in descriptions, mathematical formulations, and naming conventions can create confusion and impede accessibility to the field. This review aims to clarify the nomenclature by demonstrating that any singular field can be conceptualized as a collection of a finite set of principal, 'generic' singularities. These singularities are robust against small perturbations due to their topological nature. We underscore that the control over the principal properties of those singularities, namely, their protection against perturbations and their dimension, utilizes a consistent mathematical framework. Additionally, we provide an overview of current design techniques for both stable and approximate singularities and discuss their applications across various disciplines.

Complex non-local behavior makes designing high efficiency and multifunctional metasurfaces a significant challenge. While using libraries of meta-atoms provide a simple and fast implementation methodology, pillar to pillar interaction often imposes performance limitations. On the other extreme, inverse design based on topology optimization leverages non-local coupling to achieve high efficiency, but leads to complex and difficult to fabricate structures. In this paper, we demonstrate numerically and experimentally a shape optimization method that enables high efficiency metasurfaces while providing direct control of the structure complexity. The proposed method provides a path towards manufacturability of inverse-designed high efficiency metasurfaces.

We demonstrate experimentally non-equilibrium transport in unipolar quasi-1D hot electron devices reaching ballistic limit. The devices are realized with heterostructure engineering in nanowires to obtain dopant- and dislocation-free 1D-epitaxy and flexible bandgap engineering. We show experimentally the control of hot electron injection with a graded conduction band profile and subsequent filtering of hot and relaxed electrons with rectangular energy barriers. The number of electron passing the barrier depends exponentially on the transport length with a mean free path of 200 - 260 nm and reaches ballistic transport regime for the shortest devices with 70 % of the electrons flying freely through the base electrode and the barrier reflections limiting the transport to the collector.

Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. Despite the ongoing progress in integrated optical frequency comb technology, compact sources of short bright pulses in the mid-infrared wavelength range from 3 {\mu}m to 12 {\mu}m so far remained beyond reach. The state-of-the-art ultrafast pulse emitters in the mid-infrared are complex, bulky, and inefficient systems based on the downconversion of near-infrared or visible pulsed laser sources. Here we show a purely DC-driven semiconductor laser chip that generates one picosecond solitons at the center wavelength of 8.3 {\mu}m at GHz repetition rates. The soliton generation scheme is akin to that of passive nonlinear Kerr resonators. It relies on a fast bistability in active nonlinear laser resonators, unlike traditional passive mode-locking which relies on saturable absorbers or active mode-locking by gain modulation in semiconductor lasers. Monolithic integration of all components - drive laser, active ring resonator, coupler, and pump filter - enables turnkey generation of bright solitons that remain robust for hours of continuous operation without active stabilization. Such devices can be readily produced at industrial laser foundries using standard fabrication protocols. Our work unifies the physics of active and passive microresonator frequency combs, while simultaneously establishing a technology for nonlinear integrated photonics in the mid-infrared.
