Search

The role of internal and environmental factors in the star formation activity of galaxies is still a matter of debate, particularly at higher redshifts. Leveraging the most recent release of the COSMOS catalog, COSMOS2020, and density measurements from our previous study we disentangle the impact of environment and stellar mass on the star formation rate (SFR), and specific SFR (sSFR) of a sample of $\sim 210,000$ galaxies within redshift range $0.4< z < 4$ and present our findings in three cosmic epochs: 1) out to $z\sim 1$, the average SFR and sSFR decline at extremely dense environments and high mass end of the distribution which is mostly due to the presence of the massive quiescent population; 2) at $1

While space-borne optical and near-infrared facilities have succeeded in delivering a precise and spatially resolved picture of our Universe, their small survey area is known to under-represent the true diversity of galaxy populations. Ground-based surveys have reached comparable depths but at lower spatial resolution, resulting in source confusion that hampers accurate photometry extractions. What once was limited to the infrared regime has now begun to challenge ground-based ultra-deep surveys, affecting detection and photometry alike. Failing to address these challenges will mean forfeiting a representative view into the distant Universe. We introduce The Farmer: an automated, reproducible profile-fitting photometry package that pairs a library of smooth parametric models from The Tractor (Lang et al. 2016) with a decision tree that determines the best-fit model in concert with neighboring sources. Photometry is measured by fitting the models on other bands leaving brightness free to vary. The resulting photometric measurements are naturally total, and no aperture corrections are required. Supporting diagnostics (e.g. $\chi^2$) enable measurement validation. As fitting models is relatively time intensive, The Farmer is built with high-performance computing routines. We benchmark The Farmer on a set of realistic COSMOS-like images and find accurate photometry, number counts, and galaxy shapes. The Farmer is already being utilized to produce catalogs for several large-area deep extragalactic surveys where it has been shown to tackle some of the most challenging optical and near-infrared data available, with the promise of extending to other ultra-deep surveys expected in the near future. How galaxies form, assemble, and cease their star-formation is a central question within the modern landscape of galaxy evolution studies. These processes are indelibly imprinted on the galaxy stellar mass function (SMF). We present constraints on the shape and evolution of the SMF, the quiescent galaxy fraction, and the cosmic stellar mass density across 90% of the history of the Universe from $z=7.5\rightarrow0.2$ via the COSMOS survey. Now with deeper and more homogeneous near-infrared coverage exploited by the COSMOS2020 catalog, we leverage the large 1.27 deg$^{2}$ effective area to improve sample statistics and understand cosmic variance particularly for rare, massive galaxies and push to higher redshifts with greater confidence and mass completeness than previous studies. We divide the total stellar mass function into star-forming and quiescent sub-samples through $NUVrJ$ color-color selection. Measurements are then fitted with Schechter functions to infer the intrinsic SMF, the evolution of its key parameters, and the cosmic stellar mass density out to $z=7.5$. We find a smooth, monotonic evolution in the galaxy SMF since $z=7.5$, in agreement with previous studies. The number density of star-forming systems seems to have undergone remarkably consistent growth spanning four decades in stellar mass from $z=7.5\rightarrow2$ whereupon high-mass systems become predominantly quiescent (i.e. downsizing). An excess of massive systems at $z\sim2.5-5.5$ with strikingly red colors, some newly identified, increase the observed number densities to the point where the SMF cannot be reconciled with a Schechter function. Systematics including cosmic variance and/or AGN contamination are unlikely to fully explain this excess, and so we speculate that there may be contributions from dust-obscured objects similar to those found in FIR surveys. The study of galaxy evolution hinges on our ability to interpret multi-wavelength galaxy observations in terms of their physical properties. To do this, we rely on spectral energy distribution (SED) models which allow us to infer physical parameters from spectrophotometric data. In recent years, thanks to the wide and deep multi-waveband galaxy surveys, the volume of high quality data have significantly increased. Alongside the increased data, algorithms performing SED fitting have improved, including better modeling prescriptions, newer templates, and more extensive sampling in wavelength space. We present a comprehensive analysis of different SED fitting codes including their methods and output with the aim of measuring the uncertainties caused by the modeling assumptions. We apply fourteen of the most commonly used SED fitting codes on samples from the CANDELS photometric catalogs at z~1 and z~3. We find agreement on the stellar mass, while we observe some discrepancies in the star formation rate (SFR) and dust attenuation results. To explore the differences and biases among the codes, we explore the impact of the various modeling assumptions as they are set in the codes (e.g., star formation histories, nebular, dust, and AGN models) on the derived stellar masses, SFRs, and A_V values. We then assess the difference among the codes on the SFR-stellar mass relation and we measure the contribution to the uncertainties by the modeling choices (i.e., the modeling uncertainties) in stellar mass (~0.1dex), SFR (~0.3dex), and dust attenuation (~0.3mag). We present the survey design, implementation, and outlook for COSMOS-Web, a 255 hour treasury program conducted by the James Webb Space Telescope in its first cycle of observations. COSMOS-Web is a contiguous 0.54 deg$^2$ NIRCam imaging survey in four filters (F115W, F150W, F277W, and F444W) that will reach 5$\sigma$ point source depths ranging $\sim$27.5-28.2 magnitudes. In parallel, we will obtain 0.19 deg$^2$ of MIRI imaging in one filter (F770W) reaching 5$\sigma$ point source depths of $\sim$25.3-26.0 magnitudes. COSMOS-Web will build on the rich heritage of multiwavelength observations and data products available in the COSMOS field. The design of COSMOS-Web is motivated by three primary science goals: (1) to discover thousands of galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization ($64$ and place constraints on the formation of the Universe's most massive galaxies ($M_\star>10^{10}$\,M$_\odot$), and (3) directly measure the evolution of the stellar mass to halo mass relation using weak gravitational lensing out to $z\sim2.5$ and measure its variance with galaxies' star formation histories and morphologies. In addition, we anticipate COSMOS-Web's legacy value to reach far beyond these scientific goals, touching many other areas of astrophysics, such as the identification of the first direct collapse black hole candidates, ultracool sub-dwarf stars in the Galactic halo, and possibly the identification of $z>10$ pair-instability supernovae. We present a new method based on information theory to find the optimal number of bands required to measure the physical properties of galaxies with a desired accuracy. As a proof of concept, using the recently updated COSMOS catalog (COSMOS2020), we identify the most relevant wavebands for measuring the physical properties of galaxies in a Hawaii Two-0 (H20)- and UVISTA-like survey for a sample of $i<25$ AB mag galaxies. We find that with available $i$-band fluxes, $r$, $u$, IRAC/$ch2$ and $z$ bands provide most of the information regarding the redshift with importance decreasing from $r$-band to $z$-band. We also find that for the same sample, IRAC/$ch2$, $Y$, $r$ and $u$ bands are the most relevant bands in stellar mass measurements with decreasing order of importance. Investigating the inter-correlation between the bands, we train a model to predict UVISTA observations in near-IR from H20-like observations. We find that magnitudes in $YJH$ bands can be simulated/predicted with an accuracy of $1\sigma$ mag scatter $\lesssim 0.2$ for galaxies brighter than 24 AB mag in near-IR bands. One should note that these conclusions depend on the selection criteria of the sample. For any new sample of galaxies with a different selection, these results should be remeasured. Our results suggest that in the presence of a limited number of bands, a machine learning model trained over the population of observed galaxies with extensive spectral coverage outperforms template-fitting. Such a machine learning model maximally comprises the information acquired over available extensive surveys and breaks degeneracies in the parameter space of template-fitting inevitable in the presence of a few bands., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present $10$ main-sequence ALPINE galaxies (log($M/M_{\odot}$) = 9.2-11.1 and ${\rm SFR}=23-190\,{\rm M_{\odot}\,yr^{-1}}$) at $z\sim4.5$ with optical [OII] measurements from Keck/MOSFIRE spectroscopy and Subaru/MOIRCS narrow-band imaging. This is the largest such multi-wavelength sample at these redshifts, combining various measurements in the ultra-violet, optical, and far-infrared including [CII]$_{158{\rm \mu m}}$ line emission and dust continuum from ALMA and H$\alpha$ emission from Spitzer photometry. For the first time, this unique sample allows us to analyze the relation between [OII] and total star-formation rate (SFR) and the interstellar medium (ISM) properties via [OII]/[CII] and [OII]/\halpha luminosity ratios at $z\sim4.5$. The [OII]$-$SFR relation at $z\sim4.5$ cannot be described using standard local descriptions, but is consistent with a metal-dependent relation assuming metallicities around $50\%$ solar. To explain the measured dust-corrected luminosity ratios of $L[OII]/L[CII] \sim 0.98^{+0.21}_{-0.22}$ and $L[OII]/LHa \sim -0.22^{+0.13}_{-0.15}$ for our sample, ionization parameters $\log(U)< -2$ and electron densities $\log(\rm n_e / {\rm [cm^{-3}]}) \sim 2.5-3$ are required. The former is consistent with galaxies at $z\sim2-3$, however lower than at $z>6$. The latter may be slightly higher than expected given the galaxies' specific SFR. The analysis of this pilot sample suggests that typical log($ M/M_{\odot})$ > 9 galaxies at $z\sim4.5$ to have broadly similar ISM properties as their descendants at $z\sim2$ and suggest a strong evolution of ISM properties since the Epoch of Reionization at $z>6$., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication to MNRAS

We present the [CII]158$\mu$m line luminosity functions (LFs) at $z\sim4-6$ using the ALMA observations of 118 sources, which are selected to have UV luminosity $M_{1500A}<-20.2$ and optical spectroscopic redshifts in COSMOS and ECDF-S. Of the 118 targets, 75 have significant [CII] detections and 43 are upper limits. This is by far the largest sample of [CII] detections which allows us to set constraints to the volume density of [CII] emitters at $z\sim4-6$. But because this is a UV-selected sample, we are missing [CII]-bright but UV-faint sources making our constraints strict lower limits. Our derived LFs are statistically consistent with the $z\sim0$ [CII] LF at $10^{8.25} - 10^{9.75}L_\odot$. We compare our results with the upper limits of the [CII] LF derived from serendipitous sources in the ALPINE maps (Loiacono et al. 2020). We also infer the [CII] LFs based on published far-IR and CO LFs at $z\sim4-6$. Combining our robust lower limits with these additional estimates, we set further constraints to the true number density of [CII] emitters at $z\sim 4 - 6$. These additional LF estimates are largely above our LF at $L_{[CII]}>10^9L_{\odot}$, suggesting that UV-faint but [CII]-bright sources likely make a significant contributions to the [CII] emitter volume density. When we include all the LF estimates, we find that available model predictions underestimate the number densities of [CII] emitters at $z\sim4-6$. Finally, we set a constraint on the molecular gas mass density at $z\sim4-6$, with $\rho_{mol} \sim (2-7)\times10^7M_\odot$\,Mpc$^{-3}$. The molecular gas content of normal galaxies at z>4 is poorly constrained, because the commonly used molecular gas tracers become hard to detect. We use the [CII]158um luminosity, recently proposed as a molecular gas tracer, to estimate the molecular gas content in a large sample of main-sequence star-forming galaxies at z=4.4-5.9, with a median stellar mass of 10^9.7 Msun, drawn from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE) survey. The agreement between molecular gas masses derived from [CII] luminosity, dynamical mass, and rest-frame 850um luminosity, extrapolated from the rest-frame 158um continuum, supports [CII] as a reliable tracer of molecular gas in our sample. We find a continuous decline of the molecular gas depletion timescale from z=0 to z=5.9, which reaches a mean value of (4.6+/-0.8)x10^8 yr at z~5.5, only a factor of 2-3 shorter than in present-day galaxies. This suggests a mild enhancement of star formation efficiency toward high redshifts, unless the molecular gas fraction significantly increases. Our estimates show that the rise in molecular gas fraction as reported previously, flattens off above z~3.7 to achieve a mean value of 63%+/-3 over z=4.4-5.9. This redshift evolution of the gas fraction is in line with the one of the specific star formation rate. We use multi-epoch abundance matching to follow the gas fraction evolution over cosmic time of progenitors of z=0 Milky Way-like galaxies in 10^13 Msun halos and of more massive z=0 galaxies in 10^14 Msun halos. Interestingly, the former progenitors show a monotonic decrease of the gas fraction with cosmic time, while the latter show a constant gas fraction from z=5.9 to z~2 and a decrease at z<2. We discuss three possible effects, namely outflows, halt of gas supplying, and over-efficient star formation, which may jointly contribute to the gas fraction plateau of the latter massive galaxies., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. We report the detection of CO($J$=2$\to$1) emission from three massive dusty starburst galaxies at $z$$>$5 through molecular line scans in the NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) CO Luminosity Density at High Redshift (COLDz) survey. Redshifts for two of the sources, HDF 850.1 ($z$=5.183) and AzTEC-3 ($z$=5.298), were previously known. We revise a previous redshift estimate for the third source GN10 ($z$=5.303), which we have independently confirmed through detections of CO $J$=1$\to$0, 5$\to$4, 6$\to$5, and [CII] 158 $\mu$m emission with the VLA and the NOrthern Extended Milllimeter Array (NOEMA). We find that two currently independently confirmed CO sources in COLDz are "optically dark", and that three of them are dust-obscured galaxies at $z$$>$5. Given our survey area of $\sim$60 arcmin$^2$, our results appear to imply a $\sim$6-55 times higher space density of such distant dusty systems within the first billion years after the Big Bang than previously thought. At least two of these $z$$>$5 galaxies show star-formation rate surface densities consistent with so-called "maximum" starbursts, but we find significant differences in CO excitation between them. This result may suggest that different fractions of the massive gas reservoirs are located in the dense, star-forming nuclear regions - consistent with the more extended sizes of the [CII] emission compared to the dust continuum and higher [CII]-to-far-infrared luminosity ratios in those galaxies with lower gas excitation. We thus find substantial variations in the conditions for star formation between $z$$>$5 dusty starbursts, which typically have dust temperatures $\sim$57%$\pm$25% warmer than starbursts at $z$=2-3 due to their enhanced star formation activity., Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures, 8 tables, to appear in ApJ (accepted April 21, 2020) [v2: fixed one latex issue and a few typos, no content changes]

The ALPINE-ALMA large program targets the [CII] 158 $\mu$m line and the far-infrared continuum in 118 spectroscopically confirmed star-forming galaxies between z=4.4 and z=5.9. It represents the first large [CII] statistical sample built in this redshift range. We present details of the data processing and the construction of the catalogs. We detected 23 of our targets in the continuum. To derive accurate infrared luminosities and obscured star formation rates, we measured the conversion factor from the ALMA 158 $\mu$m rest-frame dust continuum luminosity to the total infrared luminosity (L$_{\rm IR}$) after constraining the dust spectral energy distribution by stacking a photometric sample similar to ALPINE in ancillary single-dish far-infrared data. We found that our continuum detections have a median L$_{\rm IR}$ of 4.4$\times 10^{11}$ L$_\odot$. We also detected 57 additional continuum sources in our ALMA pointings. They are at lower redshift than the ALPINE targets, with a mean photometric redshift of 2.5$\pm$0.2. We measured the 850 $\mu$m number counts between 0.35 and 3.5 mJy, improving the current interferometric constraints in this flux density range. We found a slope break in the number counts around 3 mJy with a shallower slope below this value. More than 40 % of the cosmic infrared background is emitted by sources brighter than 0.35 mJy. Finally, we detected the [CII] line in 75 of our targets. Their median [CII] luminosity is 4.8$\times$10$^8$ L$_\odot$ and their median full width at half maximum is 252 km/s. After measuring the mean obscured SFR in various [CII] luminosity bins by stacking ALPINE continuum data, we find a good agreement between our data and the local and predicted SFR-L$_{\rm [CII]}$ relations of De Looze et al. We present the ancillary data and basic physical measurements for the galaxies in the ALMA Large Program to Investigate C+ at Early Times (ALPINE) survey - the first large multi-wavelength survey which aims at characterizing the gas and dust properties of 118 main-sequence galaxies at redshifts 4.4 < z < 5.9 via the measurement of [CII]-emission at 158 micro-meter (64% at >3.5$\sigma$) and the surrounding far-infrared (FIR) continuum in conjunction with a wealth of optical and near-infrared data. We outline in detail the spectroscopic data and selection of the galaxies as well as the ground- and space-based imaging products. In addition, we provide several basic measurements including stellar masses, star formation rates (SFR), rest-frame ultra-violet (UV) luminosities, UV continuum slopes ($\beta$), and absorption line redshifts, as well as H-alpha emission derived from Spitzer colors. We find that the ALPINE sample is representative of the 4 < z < 6 galaxy population selected by photometric methods and only slightly biased towards bluer colors ($\Delta\beta$ ~ 0.2). Using [CII] as tracer of the systemic redshift (confirmed for one galaxy at z=4.5 out of 118 for which we obtained optical [OII]$\lambda$3727A emission), we confirm red shifted Ly-alpha emission and blue shifted absorption lines similar to findings at lower redshifts. By stacking the rest-frame UV spectra in the [CII] rest-frame we find that the absorption lines in galaxies with high specific SFR are more blue shifted, which could be indicative of stronger winds and outflows., Comment: 48 pages, 33 figures, 7 tables (including Appendix), accepted for publication in ApJS

We perform a comprehensive analysis of the redshift evolution of the rest-UV spectra of star-forming galaxies out to z~5. We combine new z~5 measurements of HI Ly$\alpha$ and low- and high-ionization interstellar metal absorption features with comparable measurements at z~2-4. We measure the equivalent widths of interstellar absorption features using stacked spectra in bins of Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width, performing corrections to Ly$\alpha$ strengths based on a model for the transmission of the intergalactic medium. We find a strong correlation between decreasing low-ionization absorption strength and increasing Ly$\alpha$ emission strength over the redshift range z~2-5, suggesting that both of these quantities are fundamentally linked to neutral gas covering fraction. At the highest Ly$\alpha$ equivalent widths, we observe evolution at $z\sim5$ towards greater Ly$\alpha$ emission strength at fixed low-ionization absorption strength. If we interpret the non-evolving relationship of Ly$\alpha$ emission strength and low-ionization line strength at z~2-4 as primarily reflecting the radiative transfer of Ly$\alpha$ photons, this evolution at z~5 suggests a higher intrinsic production rate of Ly$\alpha$ photons than at lower redshift. Our conclusion is supported by the joint evolution of the relationships among Ly$\alpha$ emission strength, interstellar absorption strength, and dust reddening. We perform additional analysis in bins of stellar mass, star-formation rate, UV luminosity, and age, examining how the relationships between galaxy properties and Ly$\alpha$ emission evolve towards higher redshift. We conclude that increasing intrinsic Ly$\alpha$ photon production and strong detection of nebular CIV emission (signaling lower metallicity) at z~5 indicate an elevated ionized photon production efficiency ($\xi_{\rm ion}$)., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The redshift range z=4-6 marks a transition phase between primordial and mature galaxy formation in which galaxies considerably increase their stellar mass, metallicity, and dust content. The study of galaxies in this redshift range is therefore important to understand early galaxy formation and the fate of galaxies at later times. Here, we investigate the burstiness of the recent star-formation history (SFH) of 221 $z\sim4.5$ main-sequence galaxies at log(M) > 9.7 by comparing their ultra-violet (UV) continuum, H$\alpha$ luminosity, and H$\alpha$ equivalent-width (EW). The H$\alpha$ properties are derived from the Spitzer [3.6$\mu$m]-[4.5$\mu$m] broad-band color, thereby properly taking into account model and photometric uncertainties. We find a significant scatter between H$\alpha$ and UV-derived luminosities and star-formation rates (SFRs). About half of the galaxies show a significant excess in H$\alpha$ compared to expectations from a constant smooth SFH. We also find a tentative anti-correlation between H$\alpha$ EW and stellar mass, ranging from 1000$\r{A}$ at log(M) < 10 to below 100$\r{A}$ at log(M) > 11. Consulting models suggests that most $z\sim4.5$ galaxies had a burst of star-formation within the last 50 Myrs, increasing their SFRs by a factor of > 5. The most massive galaxies on the other hand might decrease their SFRs, and may be transitioning to a quiescent stage by z=4. We identify differential dust attenuation (f) between stars and nebular regions as the main contributor to the uncertainty. With local galaxies selected by increasing H$\alpha$ EW (reaching values similar to high-z galaxies), we predict that f approaches unity at $z>4$ consistent with the extrapolation of measurements out to z=2., Comment: 31 pages (including appendix), 21 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Machine-learning (ML) algorithms will play a crucial role in studying the large datasets delivered by new facilities over the next decade and beyond. Here, we investigate the capabilities and limits of such methods in finding galaxies with brightness-variable active galactic nuclei (AGN). Specifically, we focus on an unsupervised method based on self-organizing maps (SOM) that we apply to a set of nonparametric variability estimators. This technique allows us to maintain domain knowledge and systematics control while using all the advantages of ML. Using simulated light curves that match the noise properties of observations, we verify the potential of this algorithm in identifying variable light curves. We then apply our method to a sample of ~8300 WISE color-selected AGN candidates in Stripe 82, in which we have identified variable light curves by visual inspection. We find that with ML we can identify these variable classified AGN with a purity of 86% and a completeness of 66%, a performance that is comparable to that of more commonly used supervised deep-learning neural networks. The advantage of the SOM framework is that it enables not only a robust identification of variable light curves in a given dataset, but it is also a tool to investigate correlations between physical parameters in multi-dimensional space - such as the link between AGN variability and the properties of their host galaxies. Although photometric redshifts (photo-z's) are crucial ingredients for current and upcoming large-scale surveys, the high-quality spectroscopic redshifts currently available to train, validate, and test them are substantially non-representative in both magnitude and color. We investigate the nature and structure of this bias by tracking how objects from a heterogeneous training sample contribute to photo-z predictions as a function of magnitude and color, and illustrate that the underlying redshift distribution at fixed color can evolve strongly as a function of magnitude. We then test the robustness of the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal in 120 deg$^2$ of HSC-SSP DR1 data to spectroscopic completeness and photo-z biases, and find that their impacts are sub-dominant to current statistical uncertainties. Using the Horizon-AGN hydrodynamical simulation and self-organising maps (SOMs), we show how to compress the complex data structure of a cosmological simulation into a 2-d grid which is much easier to analyse. We first verify the tight correlation between the observed 0.3$\!-\!5\mu$m broad-band colours of Horizon-AGN galaxies and their high-resolution spectra. The correlation is found to extend to physical properties such as redshift, stellar mass, and star formation rate (SFR). This direct mapping from colour to physical parameter space is shown to work also after including photometric uncertainties that mimic the COSMOS survey. We then label the SOM grid with a simulated calibration sample and estimate redshift and SFR for COSMOS-like galaxies up to $z\sim3$. In comparison to state-of-the-art techniques based on synthetic templates, our method is comparable in performance but less biased at estimating redshifts, and significantly better at predicting SFRs. In particular our "data-driven" approach, in contrast to model libraries, intrinsically allows for the complexity of galaxy formation and can handle sample biases. We present deep continuum observations at a wavelength of 2mm centered on the COSMOS field using the Goddard IRAM Superconducting Millimeter Observer (GISMO) at the IRAM 30m-telescope. These data constitute the widest deep 2mm survey to-date, reaching a uniform $\sigma\sim0.23$mJy beam$^{-1}$ sensitivity over $\sim250$arcmin$^2$ at $\sim\,24''$ resolution. We detect four sources at high significance (S/N$\,\geq\,$4.4) with an expected number of false detection of 0.09 sources, and five sources at $4.4>\,$S/N$\,\geq\,3.7$ with an expected number of false detection of 1.65 sources. Combined with deep GISMO observations in GOODS-N, we constrain the 2mm number counts over one decade in flux density. These measurements agree with most galaxy evolution models tested here, except those with large population of dusty star-forming galaxies at $z>7$. Five GISMO sources have counterparts in (sub-)millimeter catalogs available in COSMOS. Their redshifts suggest that all but one lie above $z\sim3$. These four high-redshift ($z>3$) galaxies have $\tilde{z}=3.9$, SFRs $\sim\,$400 - 1200M$_{\odot}\,$yr$^{-1}$ and $M_{\rm dust}\sim10^{9.5}\,$M$_{\odot}$. They provide a relatively complete selection ($\sim66\%$) of the most luminous ($L_{\rm IR}>10^{12.6}\,$L$_{\odot}$) and highest redshift ($z>3$) galaxies detected within our survey area by AzTEC at 1.1mm. We thus conclude that 2mm surveys favor the selection of massive, vigorously star-forming, high-redshift galaxies. This is corroborated by GISMO-C4, a source with a low false detection probability ($\sim\,6.2\%$), for which the absence of a (sub-)millimeter counterpart supports a high redshift origin ($z\gtrsim3$)., Comment: 27 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Complete Calibration of the Color-Redshift Relation (C3R2) survey is a multi-institution, multi-instrument survey that aims to map the empirical relation of galaxy color to redshift to i~24.5 (AB), thereby providing a firm foundation for weak lensing cosmology with the Stage IV dark energy missions Euclid and WFIRST. Here we present 3171 new spectroscopic redshifts obtained in the 2016B and 2017A semesters with a combination of DEIMOS, LRIS, and MOSFIRE on the Keck telescopes. The observations come from all of the Keck partners: Caltech, NASA, the University of Hawaii, and the University of California. Combined with the 1283 redshifts published in DR1, the C3R2 survey has now obtained and published 4454 high quality galaxy redshifts. We discuss updates to the survey design and provide a catalog of photometric and spectroscopic data. Initial tests of the calibration method performance are given, indicating that the sample, once completed and combined with extensive data collected by other spectroscopic surveys, should allow us to meet the cosmology requirements for Euclid, and make significant headway toward solving the problem for WFIRST. We use the full spectroscopic sample to demonstrate that galaxy brightness is weakly correlated with redshift once a galaxy is localized in the Euclid or WFIRST color space, with potentially important implications for the spectroscopy needed to calibrate redshifts for faint WFIRST and LSST sources., Comment: ApJ accepted. Using the VLA and ALMA, we have obtained CO(2-1), [C II], [N II] line emission and multiple dust continuum measurements in a sample of "normal" galaxies at $z=5-6$. We report the highest redshift detection of low-$J$ CO emission from a Lyman Break Galaxy, at $z\sim5.7$. The CO line luminosity implies a massive molecular gas reservoir of $(1.3\pm0.3)(\alpha_{\rm CO}/4.5\,M_\odot$ (K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2)^{-1})\times10^{11}\,M_\odot$, suggesting low star formation efficiency, with a gas depletion timescale of order $\sim$1 Gyr. This efficiency is much lower than traditionally observed in $z\gtrsim5$ starbursts, indicating that star forming conditions in Main Sequence galaxies at $z\sim6$ may be comparable to those of normal galaxies probed up to $z\sim3$ to-date, but with rising gas fractions across the entire redshift range. We also obtain a deep CO upper limit for a Main Sequence galaxy at $z\sim5.3$ with $\sim3$ times lower SFR, perhaps implying a high $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ conversion factor, as typically found in low metallicity galaxies. For a sample including both CO targets, we also find faint [N II] 205$\,\mu$m emission relative to [C II] in all but the most IR-luminous "normal" galaxies at $z=5-6$, implying more intense or harder radiation fields in the ionized gas relative to lower redshift. These radiation properties suggest that low metallicity may be common in typical $\sim$10$^{10}\,M_\odot$ galaxies at $z=5-6$. Using precise galaxy stellar mass function measurements in the COSMOS field we determine the stellar-to-halo mass relationship (SHMR) using a parametric abundance matching technique. The unique combination of size and highly complete stellar mass estimates in COSMOS allows us to determine the SHMR over a wide range of halo masses from $z\sim0.2$ to $z\sim5$. At $z\sim 0.2$ the ratio of stellar-to-halo mass content peaks at a characteristic halo mass $M_{\rm h} =10^{12} M_\odot$ and declines at higher and lower halo masses. This characteristic halo mass increases with redshift reaching $M_{\rm h} =10^{12.5} M_\odot$ at $z\sim2.3$ and remaining flat up to $z=4$. We considered the principal sources of uncertainty in our stellar mass measurements and also the variation in halo mass estimates in the literature. We show that our results are robust to these sources of uncertainty and explore likely explanation for differences between our results and those published in the literature. The steady increase in characteristic halo mass with redshift points to a scenario where cold gas inflows become progressively more important in driving star-formation at high redshifts but larger samples of massive galaxies are needed to rigorously test this hypothesis., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, Accepted by MNRAS

We report the first detailed measurement of the shape of the CO luminosity function at high redshift, based on $>$320 hr of the NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations over an area of $\sim$60 arcmin$^2$ taken as part of the CO Luminosity Density at High Redshift (COLDz) survey. COLDz "blindly" selects galaxies based on their cold gas content through CO($J$=1$\to$0) emission at $z$$\sim$2-3 and CO($J$=2$\to$1) at $z$$\sim$5-7 down to a CO luminosity limit of log($L'_{\rm CO}$/K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$)$\simeq$9.5. We find that the characteristic luminosity and bright end of the CO luminosity function are substantially higher than predicted by semi-analytical models, but consistent with empirical estimates based on the infrared luminosity function at $z$$\sim$2. We also present the currently most reliable measurement of the cosmic density of cold gas in galaxies at early epochs, i.e., the cold gas history of the universe, as determined over a large cosmic volume of $\sim$375,000 Mpc$^3$. Our measurements are in agreement with an increase of the cold gas density from $z$$\sim$0 to $z$$\sim$2-3, followed by a possible decline towards $z$$\sim$5-7. These findings are consistent with recent surveys based on higher-$J$ CO line measurements, upon which COLDz improves in terms of statistical uncertainties by probing $\sim$50-100 times larger areas and in the reliability of total gas mass estimates by probing the low-$J$ CO lines accessible to the VLA. Our results thus appear to suggest that the cosmic star-formation rate density follows an increased cold molecular gas content in galaxies towards its peak about 10 billion years ago, and that its decline towards the earliest epochs is likely related to a lower overall amount of cold molecular gas (as traced by CO) bound in galaxies towards the first billion years after the Big Bang., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables, to appear in ApJ (accepted January 04, 2019)

We describe the CO Luminosity Density at High-z (COLDz) survey, the first spectral line deep field targeting CO(1-0) emission from galaxies at $z=1.95-2.85$ and CO(2-1) at $z=4.91-6.70$. The main goal of COLDz is to constrain the cosmic density of molecular gas at the peak epoch of cosmic star formation. By targeting both a wide ($\sim$51 arcmin$^2$) and a deep area ($\sim$9 arcmin$^2$), the survey is designed to robustly constrain the bright end and the characteristic luminosity of the CO(1-0) luminosity function. An extensive analysis of the reliability of our line candidates, and new techniques provide detailed completeness and statistical corrections as necessary to determine the best constraints to date on the CO luminosity function. Our blind search for CO(1-0) uniformly selects starbursts and massive Main Sequence galaxies based on their cold molecular gas masses. Our search also detects CO(2-1) line emission from optically dark, dusty star-forming galaxies at $z>5$. We find a range of spatial sizes for the CO-traced gas reservoirs up to $\sim40$ kpc, suggesting that spatially extended cold molecular gas reservoirs may be common in massive, gas-rich galaxies at $z\sim2$. Through CO line stacking, we constrain the gas mass fraction in previously known typical star-forming galaxies at $z=2$-3. The stacked CO detection suggests lower molecular gas mass fractions than expected for massive Main Sequence galaxies by a factor of $\sim3-6$. The physical origin of diffuse Ly$\alpha$ halos (LAHs) around star-forming galaxies is still a matter of debate. We present the dependence of LAH luminosity ($L({\rm Ly}\alpha)_H$) on the stellar mass ($M_\star$), $SFR$, color excess ($E(B-V)_\star$), and dark matter halo mass ($M_{\rm h}$) of the parent galaxy for $\sim 900$ Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) at $z\sim2$ divided into ten subsamples. We calculate $L({\rm Ly}\alpha)_H$ using the stacked observational relation between $L({\rm Ly}\alpha)_H$ and central Ly$\alpha$ luminosity by Momose et al. (2016), which we find agrees with the average trend of VLT/MUSE-detected individual LAEs. We find that our LAEs have relatively high $L({\rm Ly}\alpha)_H$ despite low $M_\star$ and $M_{\rm h}$, and that $L({\rm Ly}\alpha)_H$ remains almost unchanged with $M_\star$ and perhaps with $M_{\rm h}$. These results are incompatible with the cold stream (cooling radiation) scenario and the satellite-galaxy star-formation scenario, because the former predicts fainter $L({\rm Ly}\alpha)_H$ and both predict steeper $L({\rm Ly}\alpha)_H$ vs. $M_\star$ slopes. We argue that LAHs are mainly caused by Ly$\alpha$ photons escaping from the main body and then scattered in the circum-galactic medium. This argument is supported by LAH observations of H$\alpha$ emitters (HAEs). When LAHs are taken into account, the Ly$\alpha$ escape fractions of our LAEs are about ten times higher than those of HAEs with similar $M_\star$ or $E(B-V)_\star$, which may partly arise from lower HI gas masses implied from lower $M_{\rm h}$ at fixed $M_\star$, or from another Ly$\alpha$ source in the central part., Comment: Published in PASJ; 35 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables

We report the serendipitous discovery of a dusty, starbursting galaxy at $z=5.667$ (hereafter called CRLE) in close physical association with the "normal" main-sequence galaxy HZ10 at $z=5.654$. CRLE was identified by detection of [CII], [NII] and CO(2-1) line emission, making it the highest redshift, most luminous starburst in the COSMOS field. This massive, dusty galaxy appears to be forming stars at a rate of at least 1500$\,M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ in a compact region only $\sim3$ kpc in diameter. The dynamical and dust emission properties of CRLE suggest an ongoing merger driving the starburst, in a potentially intermediate stage relative to other known dusty galaxies at the same epoch. The ratio of [CII] to [NII] may suggest that an important ($\sim15\%$) contribution to the [CII] emission comes from a diffuse ionized gas component, which could be more extended than the dense, starbursting gas. CRLE appears to be located in a significant galaxy overdensity at the same redshift, potentially associated with a large-scale cosmic structure recently identified in a Lyman Alpha Emitter survey. This overdensity suggests that CRLE and HZ10 reside in a protocluster environment, offering the tantalizing opportunity to study the effect of a massive starburst on protocluster star formation. Dust-enshrouded, starbursting, submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at $z \geq 3$ have been proposed as progenitors of $z \geq 2$ compact quiescent galaxies (cQGs). To test this connection, we present a detailed spatially resolved study of the stars, dust and stellar mass in a sample of six submillimeter-bright starburst galaxies at $z \sim 4.5$. The stellar UV emission probed by HST is extended, irregular and shows evidence of multiple components. Informed by HST, we deblend Spitzer/IRAC data at rest-frame optical finding that the systems are undergoing minor mergers, with a typical stellar mass ratio of 1:6.5. The FIR dust continuum emission traced by ALMA locates the bulk of star formation in extremely compact regions (median $r_{\rm{e}} = 0.70 \pm 0.29$ kpc) and it is in all cases associated with the most massive component of the mergers (median $\log (M_{*}/M_{\odot}) = 10.49 \pm 0.32$). We compare spatially resolved UV slope ($\beta$) maps with the FIR dust continuum to study the infrared excess ($\rm{IRX} = L_{\rm{IR}}/L_{\rm{UV}}$)-$\beta$ relation. The SMGs display systematically higher $\rm{IRX}$ values than expected from the nominal trend, demonstrating that the FIR and UV emissions are spatially disconnected. Finally, we show that the SMGs fall on the mass-size plane at smaller stellar masses and sizes than cQGs at $z = 2$. Taking into account the expected evolution in stellar mass and size between $z = 4.5$ and $z = 2$ due to the ongoing starburst and mergers with minor companions, this is in agreement with a direct evolutionary connection between the two populations., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. 25 pages, 6 figures

We trace the specific star formation rate (sSFR) of massive star-forming galaxies ($\gtrsim\!10^{10}\,\mathcal{M}_\odot$) from $z\sim2$ to 7. Our method is substantially different from previous analyses, as it does not rely on direct estimates of star formation rate, but on the differential evolution of the galaxy stellar mass function (SMF). We show the reliability of this approach by means of semi-analytical and hydrodynamical cosmological simulations. We then apply it to real data, using the SMFs derived in the COSMOS and CANDELS fields. We find that the sSFR is proportional to $(1+z)^{1.1\pm0.2}$ at $z>2$, in agreement with other observations but in tension with the steeper evolution predicted by simulations from $z\sim4$ to 2. We investigate the impact of several sources of observational bias, which however cannot account for this discrepancy. Although the SMF of high-redshift galaxies is still affected by significant errors, we show that future large-area surveys will substantially reduce them, making our method an effective tool to probe the massive end of the main sequence of star-forming galaxies., Comment: ApJ accepted

We investigate Lya, [OIII]5007, Ha, and [CII]158um emission from 1124 galaxies at z=4.9-7.0. Our sample is composed of 1092 Lya emitters (LAEs) at z=4.9, 5.7, 6.6, and 7.0 identified by Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) narrowband surveys covered by Spitzer large area survey with Subaru/HSC (SPLASH) and 34 galaxies at z=5.148-7.508 with deep ALMA [CII]158um data in the literature. Fluxes of strong rest-frame optical lines of [OIII] and Ha (Hb) are constrained by significant excesses found in the SPLASH 3.6 and 4.5um photometry. At z=4.9, we find that the rest-frame Ha equivalent width and the Lya escape fraction f_Lya positively correlate with the rest-frame Lya equivalent width EW^0_Lya. The f_Lya-EW^0_Lya correlation is similarly found at z~0-2, suggesting no evolution of the correlation over z~0-5. The typical ionizing photon production efficiency of LAEs is logxi_ion/[Hz erg^-1]~25.5 significantly (60-100%) higher than those of LBGs at a given UV magnitude. At z=5.7-7.0, there exists an interesting turn-over trend that the [OIII]/Ha flux ratio increases in EW^0_Lya~0-30 A, and then decreases out to EW^0_Lya~130 A. We also identify an anti-correlation between a [CII] luminosity to star-formation rate ratio (L_[CII]/SFR) and EW^0_Lya at the >99% confidence level. We carefully investigate physical origins of the correlations with stellar-synthesis and photoionization models, and find that a simple anti-correlation between EW_Lya^0 and metallicity explains self-consistently all of the correlations of Lya, Ha, [OIII]/Ha, and [CII] identified in our study, indicating detections of metal-poor (~0.03 Zo) galaxies with EW^0_Lya~200 A., Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures, accepted in ApJ

We studied the molecular gas properties of AzTEC/C159, a star-forming disk galaxy at $z=4.567$. We secured $^{12}$CO molecular line detections for the $J=2\to1$ and $J=5\to4$ transitions using the Karl G. Jansky VLA and the NOEMA interferometer. The broad (FWHM$\sim750\,{\rm km\,s}^{-1}$) and tentative double-peaked profiles of both $^{12}$CO lines are consistent with an extended molecular gas reservoir, which is distributed in a rotating disk as previously revealed from [CII] 158$\mu$m line observations. Based on the $^{12}$CO(2$\to$1) emission line we derived $L'_{\rm{CO}}=(3.4\pm0.6)\times10^{10}{\rm \,K\,km\,s}^{-1}{\rm \,pc}^{2}$, that yields a molecular gas mass of $M_{\rm H_2 }(\alpha_{\rm CO}/4.3)=(1.5\pm0.3)\times 10^{11}{\rm M}_\odot$ and unveils a gas-rich system with $\mu_{\rm gas}(\alpha_{\rm CO}/4.3)\equiv M_{\rm H_2}/M_\star=3.3\pm0.7$. The extreme star formation efficiency (SFE) of AzTEC/C159, parametrized by the ratio $L_{\rm{IR}}/L'_{\rm{CO}}=(216\pm80)\, {\rm L}_{\odot}{\rm \,(K\,km\,s}^{-1}{\rm \,pc}^{2})^{-1}$, is comparable to merger-driven starbursts such as local ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) and SMGs. Likewise, the $^{12}$CO(5$\to$4)/CO(2$\to$1) line brightness temperature ratio of $r_{52}= 0.55\pm 0.15$ is consistent with high excitation conditions, similar to that observed in SMGs. We constrained the value for the $L'_{\text{CO}}-{\rm H}_2$ mass conversion factor in AzTEC/C159, i.e. $\alpha_{\text{CO}}=3.9^{+2.7}_{-1.3}{\rm \,M}_{\odot}{\rm \,K}^{-1}{\rm \,km}^{-1}{\rm \,s\,pc}^{-2}$, that is consistent with a self-gravitating molecular gas distribution as observed in local star-forming disk galaxies. Cold gas streams from cosmological filaments might be fueling a gravitationally unstable gas-rich disk in AzTEC/C159, which breaks into giant clumps forming stars as efficiently as in merger-driven systems and generate high gas excitation., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

Until recently, determining the rotational properties of galaxies in the early universe (z>4, Universe age <1.5Gyr) was impractical, with the exception of a few strongly lensed systems. Combining the high resolution and sensitivity of ALMA at (sub-) millimeter wavelengths with the typically high strength of the [CII] 158um emission line from galaxies and long-developed dynamical modeling tools raises the possibility of characterizing the gas dynamics in both extreme starburst galaxies and normal star forming disk galaxies at z~4-7. Using a procedure centered around GIPSY's ROTCUR task, we have fit tilted ring models to some of the best available ALMA [CII] data of a small set of galaxies: the MS galaxies HZ9 & HZ10, the Damped Lyman-alpha Absorber (DLA) host galaxy ALMA J0817+1351, the submm galaxies AzTEC/C159 and COSMOS J1000+0234, and the quasar host galaxy ULAS J1319+0950. This procedure directly derives rotation curves and dynamical masses as functions of radius for each object. In one case, we present evidence for a dark matter halo of O(10^11) solar masses. We present an analysis of the possible velocity dispersions of AzTEC/C159 and ULAS J1319+0950 based on matching simulated observations to the integrated [CII] line profiles. Finally, we test the effects of observation resolution and sensitivity on our results. While the conclusions remain limited at the resolution and signal-to-noise ratios of these observations, the results demonstrate the viability of the modeling tools at high redshift, and the exciting potential for detailed dynamical analysis of the earliest galaxies, as ALMA achieves full observational capabilities., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Recent studies have found a significant evolution and scatter in the IRX-$\beta$ relation at z > 4, suggesting different dust properties of these galaxies. The total far-infrared (FIR) luminosity is key for this analysis but poorly constrained in normal (main-sequence) star-forming z > 5 galaxies where often only one single FIR point is available. To better inform estimates of the FIR luminosity, we construct a sample of local galaxies and three low-redshift analogs of z > 5 systems. The trends in this sample suggest that normal high-redshift galaxies have a warmer infrared (IR) SED compared to average z < 4 galaxies that are used as prior in these studies. The blue-shifted peak and mid-IR excess emission could be explained by a combination of a larger fraction of the metal-poor inter-stellar medium (ISM) being optically thin to ultra-violet (UV) light and a stronger UV radiation field due to high star formation densities. Assuming a maximally warm IR SED suggests 0.6 dex increased total FIR luminosities, which removes some tension between dust attenuation models and observations of the IRX-$\beta$ relation at z > 5. Despite this, some galaxies still fall below the minimum IRX-$\beta$ relation derived with standard dust cloud models. We propose that radiation pressure in these highly star-forming galaxies causes a spatial offset between dust clouds and young star-forming regions within the lifetime of O/B stars. These offsets change the radiation balance and create viewing-angle effects that can change UV colors at fixed IRX. We present average stellar population properties and dark matter halo masses of $z \sim 2$ \lya emitters (LAEs) from SED fitting and clustering analysis, respectively, using $\simeq$ $1250$ objects ($NB387\le25.5$) in four separate fields of $\simeq 1$ deg$^2$ in total. With an average stellar mass of $10.2\, \pm\, 1.8\times 10^8\ {\mathrm M_\odot}$ and star formation rate of $3.4\, \pm\, 0.4\ {\mathrm M_\odot}\ {\rm yr^{-1}}$, the LAEs lie on an extrapolation of the star-formation main sequence (MS) to low stellar mass. Their effective dark matter halo mass is estimated to be $4.0_{-2.9}^{+5.1} \times 10^{10}\ {\mathrm M_\odot}$ with an effective bias of $1.22^{+0.16}_{-0.18}$ which is lower than that of $z \sim 2$ LAEs ($1.8\, \pm\, 0.3$), obtained by a previous study based on a three times smaller survey area, with a probability of $96\%$. However, the difference in the bias values can be explained if cosmic variance is taken into account. If such a low halo mass implies a low HI gas mass, this result appears to be consistent with the observations of a high \lya escape fraction. With the low halo masses and ongoing star formation, our LAEs have a relatively high stellar-to-halo mass ratio (SHMR) and a high efficiency of converting baryons into stars. We examine the rest-frame ultra-violet (UV) properties of 10 [CII]$\lambda158\,{\rm \mu m}$$-$detected galaxies at $z\sim5.5$ in COSMOS using new HST/WFC3 near-infrared imaging. Together with pre-existing $158\,{\rm \mu m}-$continuum and [CII] line measurements by ALMA, we study their dust attenuation properties on the IRX-$\beta$ diagram, which connects the total dust emission ($\propto$ IRX=log($L_{FIR}/L_{1600}$)) to the line-of-sight dust column ($\propto\beta$). We find systematically bluer UV continuum spectral slopes ($\beta$) compared to previous low-resolution ground-based measurements, which relieves some of the tension between models of dust attenuation and observations at high redshifts. While most of the galaxies are consistent with local starburst or Small Magellanic cloud like dust properties, we find galaxies with low IRX values and a large range in $\beta$ that cannot be explained by models of a uniform dust distribution well mixed with stars. A stacking analysis of Keck/DEIMOS optical spectra indicates that these galaxies are metal-poor with young stellar populations which could significantly alter their spatial dust distribution., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. We determine the physical properties of a sample of SMGs in the COSMOS field that were pre-selected at the observed wavelength of $\lambda_{\rm obs}=1.1$ mm, and followed up at $\lambda_{\rm obs}=1.3$ mm with ALMA. We used MAGPHYS to fit the panchromatic (ultraviolet to radio) SEDs of 124 of the target SMGs, 19.4% of which are spectroscopically confirmed. The SED analysis was complemented by estimating the gas masses of the SMGs by using the $\lambda_{\rm obs}=1.3$ mm emission as a tracer of the molecular gas. The sample median and 16th-84th percentile ranges of the stellar masses, SFRs, dust temperatures, and dust and gas masses were derived to be $\log(M_{\star}/{\rm M}_{\odot})=11.09^{+0.41}_{-0.53}$, ${\rm SFR}=402^{+661}_{-233}$ ${\rm M}_{\odot}~{\rm yr}^{-1}$, $T_{\rm dust}=39.7^{+9.7}_{-7.4}$ K, $\log(M_{\rm dust}/{\rm M}_{\odot})=9.01^{+0.20}_{-0.31}$, and $\log(M_{\rm gas}/{\rm M}_{\odot})=11.34^{+0.20}_{-0.23}$, respectively. The median gas-to-dust ratio and gas fraction were found to be $120^{+73}_{-30}$ and $0.62^{+0.27}_{-0.23}$, respectively. We found that 57.3% of our SMGs populate the main sequence (MS) of star-forming galaxies, while 41.9% of the sources lie above the MS by a factor of >3 (one source lies below the MS). The largest 3 GHz radio sizes are found among the MS sources. Those SMGs that appear irregular in the rest-frame UV are predominantly starbursts, while the MS SMGs are mostly disk-like. The larger radio-emitting sizes of the MS SMGs compared to starbursts is a likely indication of their more widespread, less intense star formation. The irregular UV morphologies of the starburst SMGs are likely to echo their merger nature. We investigate the star formation properties of a large sample of ~2300 X-ray-selected Type 2 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) host galaxies out to z~3 in the Chandra COSMOS Legacy Survey in order to understand the connection between the star formation and nuclear activity. Making use of the existing multi-wavelength photometric data available in the COSMOS field, we perform a multi-component modeling from far-infrared to near-ultraviolet using a nuclear dust torus model, a stellar population model and a starburst model of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Through detailed analysis of SEDs, we derive the stellar masses and the star formation rates (SFRs) of Type 2 AGN host galaxies. The stellar mass of our sample is in the range 9 < log M_{stellar}/M_{\odot} < 12 with uncertainties of ~0.19 dex. We find that Type 2 AGN host galaxies have, on average, similar SFRs compared to the normal star-forming galaxies with similar M_{stellar} and redshift ranges, suggesting no significant evidence for enhancement or quenching of star formation. This could be interpreted in a scenario, where the relative massive galaxies have already experienced substantial growth at higher redshift (z>3), and grow slowly through secular fueling processes hosting moderate-luminosity AGNs., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) is a wide-field imaging camera on the prime focus of the 8.2m Subaru telescope on the summit of Maunakea in Hawaii. A team of scientists from Japan, Taiwan and Princeton University is using HSC to carry out a 300-night multi-band imaging survey of the high-latitude sky. The survey includes three layers: the Wide layer will cover 1400 deg$^2$ in five broad bands ($grizy$), with a $5\,\sigma$ point-source depth of $r \approx 26$. The Deep layer covers a total of 26~deg$^2$ in four fields, going roughly a magnitude fainter, while the UltraDeep layer goes almost a magnitude fainter still in two pointings of HSC (a total of 3.5 deg$^2$). Here we describe the instrument, the science goals of the survey, and the survey strategy and data processing. We use $>$9400 $\log(m/M_{\odot})>10$ quiescent and star-forming galaxies at $z\lesssim2$ in COSMOS/UltraVISTA to study the average size evolution of these systems, with focus on the rare, ultra-massive population at $\log(m/M_{\odot})>11.4$. The large 2-square degree survey area delivers a sample of $\sim400$ such ultra-massive systems. Accurate sizes are derived using a calibration based on high-resolution images from the Hubble Space Telescope. We find that, at these very high masses, the size evolution of star-forming and quiescent galaxies is almost indistinguishable in terms of normalization and power-law slope. We use this result to investigate possible pathways of quenching massive $m>M^*$ galaxies at $z<2$. We consistently model the size evolution of quiescent galaxies from the star-forming population by assuming different simple models for the suppression of star-formation. These models include an instantaneous and delayed quenching without altering the structure of galaxies and a central starburst followed by compaction. We find that instantaneous quenching reproduces well the observed mass-size relation of massive galaxies at $z>1$. Our starburst$+$compaction model followed by individual growth of the galaxies by minor mergers is preferred over other models without structural change for $\log(m/M_{\odot})>11.0$ galaxies at $z>0.5$. None of our models is able to meet the observations at $m>M^*$ and $z<1$ with out significant contribution of post-quenching growth of individual galaxies via mergers. We conclude that quenching is a fast process in galaxies with $ m \ge 10^{11} M_\odot$, and that major mergers likely play a major role in the final steps of their evolution., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

We determine the radio size distribution of a large sample of 152 SMGs in COSMOS that were detected with ALMA at 1.3 mm. For this purpose, we used the observations taken by the VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz Large Project. One hundred and fifteen of the 152 target SMGs were found to have a 3 GHz counterpart. The median value of the major axis FWHM at 3 GHz is derived to be $4.6\pm0.4$ kpc. The radio sizes show no evolutionary trend with redshift, or difference between different galaxy morphologies. We also derived the spectral indices between 1.4 and 3 GHz, and 3 GHz brightness temperatures for the sources, and the median values were found to be $\alpha=-0.67$ and $T_{\rm B}=12.6\pm2$ K. Three of the target SMGs, which are also detected with the VLBA, show clearly higher brightness temperatures than the typical values. Although the observed radio emission appears to be predominantly powered by star formation and supernova activity, our results provide a strong indication of the presence of an AGN in the VLBA and X-ray-detected SMG AzTEC/C61. The median radio-emitting size we have derived is 1.5-3 times larger than the typical FIR dust-emitting sizes of SMGs, but similar to that of the SMGs' molecular gas component traced through mid-$J$ line emission of CO. The physical conditions of SMGs probably render the diffusion of cosmic-ray electrons inefficient, and hence an unlikely process to lead to the observed extended radio sizes. Instead, our results point towards a scenario where SMGs are driven by galaxy interactions and mergers. Besides triggering vigorous starbursts, galaxy collisions can also pull out the magnetised fluids from the interacting disks, and give rise to a taffy-like synchrotron-emitting bridge. We measure the stellar mass function (SMF) of galaxies in the COSMOS field up to $z\sim6$. We select them in the near-IR bands of the COSMOS2015 catalogue, which includes ultra-deep photometry from UltraVISTA-DR2, SPLASH, and Subaru/Hyper-SuprimeCam. At $z>2.5$ we use new precise photometric redshifts with error $\sigma_z=0.03(1+z)$ and an outlier fraction of $12\%$, estimated by means of the unique spectroscopic sample of COSMOS. The increased exposure time in the DR2, along with our panchromatic detection strategy, allow us to improve the stellar mass completeness at high $z$ with respect to previous UltraVISTA catalogues. We also identify passive galaxies through a robust colour-colour selection, extending their SMF estimate up to $z=4$. Our work provides a comprehensive view of galaxy stellar mass assembly between $z=0.1$ and 6, for the first time using consistent estimates across the entire redshift range. We fit these measurements with a Schechter function, correcting for Eddington bias. We compare the SMF fit with the halo mass function predicted from $\Lambda$CDM simulations. We find that at $z>3$ both functions decline with a similar slope in the high-mass end. This feature could be explained assuming that the mechanisms that quench star formation in massive haloes become less effective at high redshift; however further work needs to be done to confirm this scenario. Concerning the SMF low-mass end, it shows a progressive steepening as moving towards higher redshifts, with $\alpha$ decreasing from $-1.47_{-0.02}^{+0.02}$ at $z\simeq0.1$ to $-2.11_{-0.13}^{+0.30}$ at $z\simeq5$. This slope depends on the characterisation of the observational uncertainties, which is crucial to properly remove the Eddington bias. We report interferometric measurements of [NII] 205 um fine-structure line emission from a representative sample of three galaxies at z=5-6 using the Atacama Large (sub)Millimeter Array (ALMA). These galaxies were previously detected in [CII] and far-infrared continuum emission and span almost two orders of magnitude in star formation rate (SFR). Our results show at least two different regimes of ionized inter-stellar medium properties for galaxies in the first billion years of cosmic time, separated by their L_[CII]/L_[NII] ratio. We find extremely low [NII] emission compared to [CII] (L_ [CII]/L_[NII]=68 [+200/-28]) from a "typical" L*_UV star-forming galaxy, likely directly or indirectly (by its effect on the radiation field) related to low dust abundance and low metallicity. The infrared-luminous modestly star-forming Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) in our sample is characterized by an ionized-gas fraction (L_[CII]/L_[NII]<=20) typical of local star-forming galaxies and shows evidence for spatial variations in its ionized-gas fraction across an extended gas reservoir. The extreme SFR, warm and compact dusty starburst AzTEC-3 shows an ionized fraction higher than expected given its star-formation rate surface density (L_[CII]/L_[NII]=22+/-8) suggesting that [NII] dominantly traces a diffuse ionized medium rather than star-forming HII regions in this type of galaxy. This highest redshift sample of [NII] detections provides some of the first constraints on ionized and neutral gas modeling attempts and on the structure of the inter-stellar medium at z=5-6 in "normal" galaxies and starbursts., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, to appear in ApJ (accepted September 15, 2016)

We report the results from some of the deepest Keck/Multi-Object Spectrometer For Infra-Red Exploration data yet obtained for candidate $z \gtrsim 7$ galaxies. Our data show one significant line detection with 6.5$\sigma$ significance in our combined 10 hr of integration which is independently detected on more than one night, thus ruling out the possibility that the detection is spurious. The asymmetric line profile and non-detection in the optical bands strongly imply that the detected line is Ly$\alpha$ emission from a galaxy at $z$(Ly$\alpha)=7.6637 \pm 0.0011$, making it the fourth spectroscopically confirmed galaxy via Ly$\alpha$ at $z>7.5$. This galaxy is bright in the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV; $M_{\rm UV} \sim -21.2$) with a moderately blue UV slope ($\beta=-2.2^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$), and exhibits a rest-frame Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width of EW(Ly$\alpha$) $\sim 15.6^{+5.9}_{-3.6}$ \AA. The non-detection of the 11 other $z \sim$ 7-8 galaxies in our long 10 hr integration, reaching a median 5$\sigma$ sensitivity of 28 \AA\ in the rest-frame EW(Ly$\alpha$), implies a 1.3$\sigma$ deviation from the null hypothesis of a non-evolving distribution in the rest-frame EW(Ly$\alpha$) between $36.5$, which may signal the evolving neutral fraction in the intergalactic medium at the end of the reionization epoch, although our weak evidence suggests the need for a larger statistical sample to allow for a more robust conclusion., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, ApJ, in press

We present the Spitzer-IRAC/MIPS Extragalactic survey (SIMES) in the South Ecliptic Pole (SEP) field. The large area covered (7.7 deg$^2$), together with one of the lowest Galactic cirrus emissions in the entire sky and a very extensive coverage by Spitzer, Herschel, Akari, and GALEX, make the SIMES field ideal for extragalactic studies. The elongated geometry of the SIMES area ($\approx$4:1), allowing for a significant cosmic variance reduction, further improves the quality of statistical studies in this field. Here we present the reduction and photometric measurements of the Spitzer/IRAC data. The survey reaches a depth of 1.93 and 1.75 $\mu$Jy (1$\sigma$) at 3.6 and 4.5 $\mu$m, respectively. We discuss the multiwavelength IRAC--based catalog, completed with optical, mid-- and far--IR observations. We detect 341,000 sources with F$_{3.6\mu m} \geq 3\sigma$. Of these, 10% have an associated 24 $\mu$m counterpart, while 2.7% have an associated SPIRE source. We release the catalog through the NASA/IPAC Infrared Science Archive (IRSA). Two scientific applications of these IRAC data are presented in this paper: first we compute integral number counts at 3.6 $\mu$m. Second, we use the [3.6]--[4.5] color index to identify galaxy clusters at z$>$1.3. We select 27 clusters in the full area, a result consistent with previous studies at similar depth.

We investigate morphological properties of 61 Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) at z = 4.86 identified in the COSMOS field, based on Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) imaging data in the F814W-band. Out of the 61 LAEs, we find the ACS counterparts for the 54 LAEs. Eight LAEs show double-component structures with a mean projected separation of 0."63 (~ 4.0 kpc at z = 4.86). Considering the faintness of these ACS sources, we carefully evaluate their morphological properties, that is, size and ellipticity. While some of them are compact and indistinguishable from the PSF half-light radius of 0."07 (~ 0.45 kpc), the others are clearly larger than the PSF size and spatially extended up to 0."3 (~ 1.9 kpc). We find that the ACS sources show a positive correlation between ellipticity and size and that the ACS sources with large size and round shape are absent. Our Monte Carlo simulation suggests that the correlation can be explained by (1) the deformation effects via PSF broadening and shot noise or (2) the source blending in which two or more sources with small separation are blended in our ACS image and detected as a single elongated source. Therefore, the 46 single-component LAEs could contain the sources which consist of double (or multiple) components with small spatial separation (i.e., < 0."3 or 1.9 kpc). Further observation with high angular resolution at longer wavelengths (e.g., rest-frame wavelengths of > 4000 A) is inevitable to decipher which interpretation is adequate for our LAE sample., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ on 19 January 2016

We measure a relation between the depth of four prominent rest-UV absorption complexes and metallicity for local galaxies and verify it up to z~3. We then apply this relation to a sample of 224 galaxies at 3.5 < z < 6.0 ( = 4.8) in COSMOS, for which unique UV spectra from DEIMOS and accurate stellar masses from SPLASH are available. The average galaxy population at z~5 and log(M/Msun) > 9 is characterized by 0.3-0.4 dex (in units of 12+log(O/H)) lower metallicities than at z~2, but comparable to z~3.5. We find galaxies with weak/no Ly-alpha emission to have metallicities comparable to z~2 galaxies and therefore may represent an evolved sub-population of z~5 galaxies. We find a correlation between metallicity and dust in good agreement with local galaxies and an inverse trend between metallicity and star-formation rate (SFR) consistent with observations at z~2. The relation between stellar mass and metallicity (MZ relation) is similar to z~3.5, however, there are indications of it being slightly shallower, in particular for the young, Ly-alpha emitting galaxies. We show that, within a "bathtub" approach, a shallower MZ relation is expected in the case of a fast (exponential) build-up of stellar mass with an e-folding time of 100-200 Myr. Due to this fast evolution, the process of dust production and metal enrichment as a function of mass could be more stochastic in the first billion years of galaxy formation compared to later times., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables; Submitted to ApJ

We use the stellar-mass-selected catalog from the Spitzer Large Area Survey with Hyper-Suprime-Cam (SPLASH) in the COSMOS field to study the environments of galaxies via galaxy density and clustering analyses up to $z \sim 2.5$. The clustering strength of quiescent galaxies exceeds that of star-forming galaxies, implying that quiescent galaxies are preferentially located in more massive halos. When using local density measurement, we find a clear positive quiescent fraction--density relation at $z < 1$, consistent with earlier results. However, the quiescent fraction--density relation reverses its trend at intermediate redshifts ($1 < z < 1.5$) with marginal significance (<1.8$\sigma$) and is found to be scale dependent (1.6$\sigma$). The lower fraction of quiescent galaxies seen in large-scale dense environments, if confirmed to be true, may be associated with the fact that the star formation can be more easily sustained via cold stream accretion in `large-scale' high-density regions, preventing galaxies from permanent quenching. Finally, at $z > 1.5$, the quiescent fraction depends little on the local density, even though clustering shows that quiescent galaxies are in more massive halos. We argue that at high redshift the typical halo size falls below $10^{13}$ $M_{\odot}$, where intrinsically the local density measurements are so varied that they do not trace the halo mass. Using a grid of $\sim 2$ million elements ($\Delta z = 0.005$) adapted from COSMOS photometric redshift (photo-z) searches, we investigate the general properties of template-based photo-z likelihood surfaces. We find these surfaces are filled with numerous local minima and large degeneracies that generally confound rapid but "greedy" optimization schemes, even with additional stochastic sampling methods. In order to robustly and efficiently explore these surfaces, we develop BAD-Z [Brisk Annealing-Driven Redshifts (Z)], which combines ensemble Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling with simulated annealing to sample arbitrarily large, pre-generated grids in approximately constant time. Using a mock catalog of 384,662 objects, we show BAD-Z samples $\sim 40$ times more efficiently compared to a brute-force counterpart while maintaining similar levels of accuracy. We report a discovery of 6 massive galaxies with both extremely large Lya equivalent width and evolved stellar population at z ~ 3. These MAssive Extremely STrong Lya emitting Objects (MAESTLOs) have been discovered in our large-volume systematic survey for strong Lya emitters (LAEs) with twelve optical intermediate-band data taken with Subaru/Suprime-Cam in the COSMOS field. Based on the SED fitting analysis for these LAEs, it is found that these MAESTLOs have (1) large rest-frame equivalent width of EW_0(Lya) ~ 100--300 A, (2) M_star ~ 10^10.5--10^11.1 M_sun, and (3) relatively low specific star formation rates of SFR/M_star ~ 0.03--1 Gyr^-1. Three of the 6 MAESTLOs have extended Ly$\alpha$ emission with a radius of several kpc although they show very compact morphology in the HST/ACS images, which correspond to the rest-frame UV continuum. Since the MAESTLOs do not show any evidence for AGNs, the observed extended Lya emission is likely to be caused by star formation process including the superwind activity.
