Abstract

Nanofibrous membranes were developed by combining chitosan (CS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and calcium chloride (CC) to incorporate curcumin (CCM) through a co‐axial electro‐spinning method to improve CCM bioavailability. The optimal parameters were PVA/CS ratio of 7:3 v/v, PVA/CCM ratio of 8:2 v/v, CC amount of 0.5 g, fiber collection distance of 15 cm, voltage value of 18 kV, and injection flow of 0.1 mL/h (both core and shell layer). The prepared PVA/CCM@CS/PVA/CC nanofiber showed smooth surfaces and uniform bead‐free morphology with core‐shell structure. The average fiber diameter was 301.55 ± 76.77 nm with a narrow distribution. Using the Korsmeyer‐Peppas kinetic release model, the nanofiber membrane effectively released ∼85% CCM at pH 7.4 over 96 h via Fickian diffusion transport mechanism. In vitro antibacterial tests demonstrated that the membrane was efficient against both Gram‐positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram‐negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacteria. When compared to free CCM, the membrane improved cell survival due to its nontoxic and cytobiocompatible features. In vivo tests found that the membrane significantly improved healing in incised‐wound rats, reducing inflammation, fibroblast proliferation, and collagen deposition. These findings indicate that the novel PVA/CCM@CS/PVA/CC nanofiber membrane, which has numerous biological functions, could be a promising candidate for wound dressing therapeutic applications. Abstract

In this study, coconut coir pith (cellulose-lignin compound) was first treated with water and sodium hydroxide solution to remove lignin and impurities, then lignin-extracted coir pith was calcined at 200°C for 6 h. The obtained absorbent was applied to remove Cr(IV) ions by using adsorption method. Some analytical methods such as thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis (BET), X-ray powder diffraction analysis (XRD), pHpzc analysis, Boehm titration and potentiometric titration were employed to characterize structure, specific surface area, functional groups and surface charge of the absorbent. Adsorption results showed that 95.23% of Cr(IV) was removed from solution of 100 mg.L-1 by using certain amount of absorbent at pH 2.0 within 20 min at room temperature. Kinetics of Cr(VI) adsorption from aqueous solution on absorbent fit to Pseudo-second-order kinetic equation and adsorption isotherm of Cr(IV) followed to Freundlich model.

18. Adsorption of chromium (VI) ion using zeolite NaA/Fe3O4 composite derived from rice husk ash

Abstract

In this study, zeolite NaA was fabricated from rice husk ash before combining with Fe3O4 to form a magnetic NaA/Fe3O4 composite. NaA/Fe3O4 composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET). The surface area and the pore size of zeolite NaA/Fe3O4 was 24.11 m2.g−1 and 23.04 Å. In addition, batch adsorption studies were carried out for the removal of chromium (VI) ion in aqueous solution. The effects of adsorption parameters, including pH solution, initial concentration of Cr (VI) ions, mass of adsorbent, and contact time were investigated. The maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity of zeolite NaA and NaA/Fe3O4 was 22.554 mg.g−1 and 13.722 mg.g−1, respectively. The pseudo-first order kinetic model fitted well to the experimental data. The regeneration of the adsorbent was also investigated for three cycles.

19. Alginate–functionalized Fe3O4nanoparticles as a drug delivery system for targeted controlled release

Abstract

The applications of alginate-functionalized magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4@Alg NPs) for drug delivery have been limited reported. In this study, Fe3O4@Alg NPs was successfully formulated using the co-precipitation method for the adsorption and delivery of curcumin in both oral and injectable routes. The Fe3O4@Alg NPs were synthesized under optimized conditions with a high saturation magnetization value and negligible remnant magnetization. Curcumin was efficiently integrated into the system through adsorption, achieving a drug encapsulation efficiency of 71% over 12 h, an average NPs size of 100–200 nm, a 1.2-time increase in the curcumin solubility, with insignificant hemolytic effects at concentrations of up to 20 mg mL−1. The adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies showed that the drug adsorption process was rapid, with low slope coefficient, high adsorption capacity of 5.981 mg g−1, and monolayer of curcumin physically adsorbed onto the NPs surfaces. Moreover, the Fe3O4@Alg NPs could protect curcumin from the acidic gastric environment and sustainably release it under simulated physiological (pH 7.4) and intestinal conditions (pH 6.8), with the release percentages of 93.48% and ∼100%, respectively. In summary, this study demonstrated the significant potential of Fe3O4@Alg NPs in enhancing the bioavailability of curcumin. These nanoparticles can be further explored as a promising distribution system for both oral and injectable administration.
