Candida nivariensis is emerging as a highly resistant species of the Candida glabrata complex causing invasive and mucocutaneous infections. In this study, three cases of vulvovaginal candidiasis caused by C. nivariensis are described and identified by Internal Transcribed Spacer 1–2 sequencing. All isolates were susceptible in vitro to anidulafungin, micafungin, caspofungin, 5-flucytosine, posaconazole, voriconazole, itraconazole, amphotericin B, and showed dose-dependent susceptibility to fluconazole. In two patients, three doses of oral fluconazole were effective, while one patient developed clinical fluconazole resistance with a new relapse after 6 months. Increasing the weekly dose of fluconazole showed to be effective in this patient.

Background: Occult hepatitis B infection (OBI) is characterized by the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA at low levels in serum (<200 IU/mL) with a negative hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) test. OBI remains a major challenge to blood safety, particularly in HBV-endemic regions like Cameroon, where HBV detection relies solely on HBsAg testing. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the actual incidence and genotype characteristics of OBI in Cameroonian blood donors. Methods: Between March and June 2023, samples were collected from 288 HBsAg-negative blood donors aged 18 to 55 years and analysed for antibodies against the HBV core (anti-HBc) and surface antigens (anti-HBs). Following DNA extraction from the serum samples, qualitative nested PCR and quantitative real-time PCR were used to detect HBV viral DNA and viral load respectively. For positive samples, sequencing of a fragment of the S gene was performed to identify the circulating HBV genotypes. Results: The findings revealed that 58% (n = 167/288) of blood donors tested positive for anti-HBc, 29% (n = 83/288) tested positive for anti-HBs, and 26% (n = 75/288) being positive for both anti-HBc and anti-HBs. Occult hepatitis was confirmed in 4.5% of the blood donors, all of whom belonged to either HBV genotypes A or E, which are predominant in Cameroon. The amino acid substitution sA184V associated with HBsAg detection failure in genotype E was observed in 70% of OBI sequences, and the HBsAg immune escape variants (sT131N and sS143L) implicated in OBI were also observed. The mutation rtN139K in the reverse transcriptase (RT) domain of the overlapping HBV polymerase (P) gene was present in 17% of OBI-positive sequences of genotype E, likely contributing to masking HBsAg secretion. Conclusion: The results suggest a considerable risk of transfusion-transmitted HBV in this region. Therefore, to ensure blood safety, nucleic acid testing (NAT) is recommended, as relying solely on HBsAg assays is insufficient to eliminate this risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex comprises a group of dermatophyte fungi responsible for various dermatological infections. The increasing drug resistance of this species complex, especially terbinafine resistance of Trichophyton indotineae , is a major concern in dermatologist practice. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of T. mentagrophytes complex strains isolated from patients in Hue City, Vietnam, focusing on their phenotypic and genetic characteristics, antifungal susceptibility profiles, and molecular epidemiology. Keratinophilic fungi from dermatophytosis culture samples were identified morphologically and phenotypically, with species and genotypes confirmed by internal transcribed spacer sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. Antifungal susceptibility testing was carried out to evaluate their susceptibility to itraconazole, voriconazole, and terbinafine. The 24% (n  = 27/114) of superficial mycoses were phenotypically attributed to T. mentagrophytes complex isolates. Trichophyton interdigitale , mainly genotype II*, was predominant (44.4%), followed by T. mentagrophytes genotype III* (22.2%), T. indotineae (14.8%), T. tonsurans (11.2%), and T. mentagrophytes (7.4%). While all isolates were susceptible to itraconazole and voriconazole, half of T. indotineae isolates exhibited resistance to terbinafine, linked to the Phe397Leu mutation in the SQLE protein. This study highlighted the presence of terbinafine-resistant T. indotineae isolates in Vietnam, emphasizing the need to investigate dermatophyte drug resistance and implement effective measures in clinical practice. The prevalence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in the Vietnamese population remains underestimated. The aim of the present study was to investigate the seroprevalence of HEV IgG/IgM antibodies and the presence of HEV RNA in blood donors as a part of epidemiological surveillance for transfusion-transmitted viruses. Serum samples from blood donors (n = 553) were analysed for markers of past (anti-HEV IgG) and recent/ongoing (anti-HEV IgM) HEV infections. In addition, all serum samples were subsequently tested for HEV RNA positivity. The overall prevalence of anti-HEV IgG was 26.8% (n = 148/553), while the seroprevalence of anti-HEV IgM was 0.5% (n = 3/553). Anti-HEV IgG seroprevalence in male and female donors was similar (27.1% and 25.5%, respectively). A higher risk of hepatitis E exposure was observed with increasing age. None of the blood donors were HEV RNA positive, and there was no evidence of HEV viraemia. Although the absence of HEV viraemia in blood donors from Northern Vietnam is encouraging, further epidemiological surveillance in other geographical regions is warranted to rule out transfusion-transmitted HEV. Background: Parasites of Entamoeba and Cryptosporidium genera, prevalent among various vertebrates such as humans and pigs, pose a zoonotic threat as common protozoan pathogens. This study investigated the prevalence and genetic diversity of Entamoeba and Cryptosporidium species in pigs and wild boars across central and southern Vietnam, to ascertain parasite transmission dynamics. Methods: A total of 113 independent stool samples from 77 pigs and 36 wild boars were analyzed using PCR-based molecular methodologies to detect the presence of Entamoeba spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. The identified species were further characterized through Sanger sequencing, and phylogenetic relationships were analyzed. Results: The study revealed a high prevalence of Entamoeba spp. (62%, n = 70/113) and Cryptosporidium spp. (31%, n = 35/113). Entamoeba suis (57%, n = 40) was predominant, followed by Entamoeba polecki (40%, n = 40) and Entamoeba hartmanni (3%, n = 2). Among Cryptosporidium species, Cryptosporidium scrofarum (89%, n = 31) was the most common, followed by Cryptosporidium suis (11%, n = 4). Wild boars exhibited a higher prevalence of Entamoeba infection compared with domestic pigs ( p = 0.019). Conclusions: The study highlights a high prevalence of Entamoeba and Cryptosporidium, suggesting a potential for zoonotic transmission in Vietnam. Further investigations are necessary to determine the extent to which these parasites in pigs and wild boars contribute to the burden in the human population.
