Aims/introduction: Blood glucose meters are commonly used at the bedside, but most of the meters used in Hung Vuong Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) are built for self-monitoring and might not be suitable for determining glucose levels in patients. In this study, we aimed to validate the performance of six frequently used meters in our hospital using the Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) standard, and investigate the hematocrit impact on the accuracy of these meters., Materials and Methods: A total of 135 pregnant women who underwent a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test consented to participate in the study at Hung Vuong Hospital. Whole blood glucose levels were measured in duplicate using meters, and hematocrit levels were measured using an Alinity h-series analyzer. Within 5 min, plasma glucose levels were measured twice in a row using the Cobas c502 reference analyzer. For accuracy and precision, the hematocrit effect was assed using CLSI POCT12-A3., Results: Out of six evaluated meters, three meters qualified. For CLSI criterion at glucose concentration of 5.55 mmol/L, Accu-Chek Inform II, Accu-Chek Performa and OneTouch VerioVue achieved 97.31%, 98.08% and 99.62%, respectively. For CLSI criterion at 4.17 mmol/L, these three achieved 100%. Accu-Chek Inform II and Accu-Chek Performa showed an inverse correlation between glucose level and hematocrit with slopes of -0.500 (95% confidence interval -0.678 to -0.322) and -0.396 (95% confidence interval -0.569 to -0.224), whereas OneTouch VerioVue was not affected by hematocrit, with a slope of 0.207 (95% confidence interval -0.026 to 0.440)., Conclusions: Blood glucose meters' measurements can be affected by hematocrit, and might provide readings not within an acceptable bias. Background: Pregnancy has major effects that make hematology parameters outside of normal reference ranges. Therefore, we conducted this study to establish reference intervals for Vietnamese pregnant women., Methods: From June 2023 to Augst 2023, blood samples from 879 eligible pregnant women were run on DxH 900 hematology analyzer and ACL TOP 550 coagulation analyzer. The tested parameters are prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), fibrinogen (FIB), white blood cell (WBC) and its differentials (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils), red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin (HGB), hematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), RBC distribution width (RDW), RBC distribution width standard deviation (RDW-SD), platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV). A non-parametric method was used to establish the 2.5 th and 97.5 th percentile reference intervals., Results: PT, APTT decrease but fibrinogen increases during pregnancy. Physiological adaptations of pregnancy result in a decrease in RBC count, but an increase in WBC count and no changes in platelet count. The reference intervals for PT (seconds), APTT (seconds), fibrinogen (mg/dL), in the first trimester were 10.30-12.88, 25.40-35.46, 280.28-559.00, in the second trimester were 9.80-11.66, 24.05-33.23, 347.75-593.35, in the third trimester were 9.60-11.40, 23.40-31.80, 330.28-628.56, respectively. The reference intervals for main hematology parameters which are WBC (× 10 9 /L), RBC (× 10 12 /L), HGB (g/dL), HCT (%), PLT (× 10 9 /L) in the first trimester were 6.33-15.24, 3.73-5.32, 10.33-13.95, 32.22-42.29, 169.66-413.88, in the second trimester were 6.99-15.55, 3.33-4.98, 9.71-13.17, 30.26-40.07, 172.34-372.19, in the third trimester were 6.22-14.14, 3.54-4.98, 9.80-13.97, 31.11-42.70, 151.30-417.14, respectively., Conclusions: Most established referenced intervals from each trimester differ from other trimesters. These trimester-specific reference ranges for Vietnamese pregnant women will aid clinicians in entepreting parameters and help other laboratories adopt these ranges after validating., Trial Registration: This study is registered at www., Clinicaltrials: gov as NCT05929326., (© 2023. Retiform hemangioendothelioma (RH) is a type of low-grade malignant angiosarcoma. It commonly involves the skin and subcutaneous tissue of the lower extremities, but a few cases have been reported in the gut. However, hepatic RH has not been previously reported. This report presents the case of RH of the liver in a 61-year-old woman who was admitted to the hospital having presented with liver space-occupying lesions of 2 months evolution. The patient underwent an abdominal ultrasound examination, which indicated a hemangioma, but abdominal computed tomography diagnosed a liver abscess. In order to determine the nature of the lesion, an ultrasound-guided liver biopsy was performed, after which a pathological diagnosis confirmed the presence of RH in the liver. The patient underwent ultrasound-guided microwave ablation three times and has been followed up for 8 years with no tumor recurrence or metastasis. Surgical excision is still the first choice for the treatment of hepatic RH. As shown in this case, however, for patients who refuse to undergo surgery or have surgical contraindications, ultrasound-guided microwave ablation is an alternative treatment option. In order to discover novel anti-inflammatory agents, three series of compounds obtained by appending 1,2,3-triazole moieties on ursolic acid were designed and synthesized. All compounds have been screened for their anti-inflammatory activity by using an ear edema model. The potent anti-inflammatory compound was subjected to in vitro cyclooxygenase COX-1/COX-2 inhibition assays. In general, the derivatives were found to be potent anti-inflammatory activity. Especially, the compound 11b exhibited the strongest activity of all of the compounds prepared, with 82.81% inhibition after intraperitoneal administration, which was better than celecoxib as a positive control. Molecular docking results unclose the rationale for the interaction of the compound 11b with COX-2 enzyme. Further studies revealed that compound 11b exhibited effective COX-2 inhibitory activity, with half-maximal inhibitor concentration (IC 50 ) value of 1.16 µM and selectivity index (SI = 64.66) value close to that of celecoxib (IC 50  = 0.93 µM, SI = 65.47). Taken together, these results could suggest a promising chemotype for development of new COX-2-targeting anti-inflammatory agent., (© 2021. Background: Cryptosporidium andersoni initiates infection by releasing sporozoites from oocysts through excystation. However, the proteins involved in excystation are unknown. Determining the proteins that participate in the excystation of C. andersoni oocysts will increase our understanding of the excystation process., Methods: Cryptosporidium andersoni oocysts were collected and purified from the feces of naturally infected adult cows. Tandem mass tags (TMT), coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) proteomic analysis, were used to investigate the proteomic expression profiles of C. andersoni oocysts before and after excystation., Results: Proteomic analysis identified a total of 1586 proteins, of which 17 were differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) upon excystation. These included 10 upregulated and seven downregulated proteins. The 17 proteins had multiple biological functions associated with control of gene expression at the level of transcription and biosynthetic and metabolic processes. Quantitative real-time RT-PCR of eight selected genes validated the proteomic data., Conclusions: This study provides information on the protein composition of C. andersoni oocysts as well as possible excystation factors. Background: Brucellosis has always been one of the major public health problems in China. Investigating the influencing factors of brucellosis is conducive to its prevention and control. The incidence trend of brucellosis shows an obvious seasonality, suggesting that there may be a correlation between brucellosis and meteorological factors, but related studies were few. We aimed to use the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model to analyze the relationship between meteorological factors and brucellosis., Methods: The data of monthly incidence of brucellosis and meteorological factors in Hebei province from January 2004 to December 2015 were collected from the Chinese Public Health Science Data Center and Chinese meteorological data website. An ARIMA model incorporated with covariables was conducted to estimate the effects of meteorological variables on brucellosis., Results: There was a highest peak from May to July every year and an upward trend during the study period. Atmospheric pressure, wind speed, mean temperature, and relative humidity had significant effects on brucellosis. The ARIMA(1,0,0)(1,1,0) 12 model with the covariates of atmospheric pressure, wind speed and mean temperature was the optimal model. The results showed that the atmospheric pressure with a 2-month lag (β = -0.004, p = 0.037), the wind speed with a 1-month lag (β = 0.030, p = 0.035), and the mean temperature with a 2-month lag (β = -0.003, p = 0.034) were significant predictors., Conclusion: Our study suggests that atmospheric pressure, wind speed, mean temperature, and relative humidity have a significant impact on brucellosis. Fibrosis is characterised by excessive deposition of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and develops because of fibroblast differentiation during the process of inflammation. There are few effective treatment options for this diseases due to the aetiology of fibrosis is not completely clarified. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), a type of ncRNA with a length of greater than 200 nucleotides without evident protein coding function, are important regulators of most biological and pathological processes, including participation, regulation or mediation of disease development. Among them, H19 is recently discovered as a class of lncRNAs which is related to fibrotic disease and inflammation. These observations implied a potential role for H19 as a promising therapeutic targets for treatment of fibrotic diseases. In this review, we will describe the characteristics of H19 and summarise recent advances in the mechanisms of H19 in the process of fibrosis. Finally, we will succinctly discuss the recent progress of the involvement of H19 in the development and pathogenesis of fibrosis diseases.

Aim: To examine the associations between female menstrual or reproductive factors and the development of systemic sclerosis (SSc) in China., Methods: In this hospital-based case-control study, for each subject, data on reproductive and menstrual factors such as number of births, abortions, and age at menarche were obtained by structured questionnaire. Risk estimates, measured by the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI), were obtained by unconditional logistics regression. Furthermore, meta-analysis was performed and pooled OR with 95% CI for the number of pregnancies and abortions were calculated., Results: There were 166 SSc and 392 female controls seen during the study period. The results showed women with late menarche age (≥17 years) were less likely than those with earlier age at menarche to develop SSc (OR 0.347, 95% CI 0.174-0.693) and compared with women without abortion, women with abortion (1 time) were at reduced risk of developing SSc (P = .036). After adjusting for potential confounders such as occupation and body mass index (BMI), late age at menarche (≥17 years) was associated with a decreased risk of SSc (OR 0.187, 95% CI 0.068-0.513), but abortions were not significantly related to SSc. The meta-analysis revealed there was no association between SSc and abortions or number of pregnancies. No significant publication bias was observed (P > .05)., Conclusion: Late age at menarche was associated with a reduced risk of SSc but abortion may not be an independent risk factor for SSc. Background: This study aims to evaluate whether the Vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms were associated with systemic sclerosis (SSc) in a Chinese Han population., Methods: Using a hospital-based case-control study including 100 SSc patients and 100 healthy controls. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the VDR region were genotyped by the improved multiplex ligase detection reaction (i MLDR) method. Haplotypes were also constructed after linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis., Results: Eight SNPs (rs731236 (TaqI), rs2228570 (FokI), rs7975232 (ApaI), rs1544410 (BsmI), rs11574010 (Cdx2), rs739837 (BglI), rs757343 (Tru9I) and rs11168267) were included. There were significant differences between SSc patients and healthy individuals in ApaI and BglI genotype (both adjusted p = 0.008). Through the genotyping, significantly association of SSc were found for: dominant model of ApaI and BglI (both OR (95% CI) = 1.80 (1.03,3.16), p = 0.040). Furthermore, the elevation of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) had a higher percentage of BglI GT genotype frequency (p = 0.034) and dominant model of ApaI (p = 0.016) in SSc. There was high linkage disequilibrium was detected in BglI and ApaI polymorphisms (r 2  = 1.0, D' = 1.0), Tru9I and rs11168267 (r 2  = 0.926, D' = 0.969), respectively. No significant difference were found in these four haplotypes (all p >0.05). The correlation between VD levels and VDR gene polymorphisms was not statistically significant., Conclusions: Our preliminary study indicates the ApaI and BglI genotype may possibly have a role in the pathogenesis of SSc patients. This study was conducted to evaluate effects of traditional Chinese medicine formula (TCMF) combined with several herbs on ruminal fermentation, enzyme activities and nutrient digestibility. Twenty finishing bulls were assigned to control or different TCMFs (Yufeisan-1, -2, -3; 2.5% dry matter (DM) in concentrate). Results showed that DM intake was higher (P < 0.05) in the Yufeisan-3 group than others. Compared to control, apparent digestibility of crude protein and neutral detergent fiber were increased (P < 0.05) by Yufeisan-3. No changes were observed in ruminal pH, concentrations of ammonia-N, microbial crude protein and total volatile fatty acid, whereas ratio of acetate to propionate was lower (P < 0.05) and propionate proportion tended to be higher (P < 0.1) in three TCMFs than control. Ruminal xylanase (P = 0.061) and carboxymethylcellulase (P < 0.05) activities were higher in Yufeisan-3 than control. No changes were observed in abundance of total bacteria, fungi and protozoa, whereas Fibrobacter succinogenes (P = 0.062) and Ruminococcus flavefaciens (P < 0.05) were increased and total methanogens was reduced (P = 0.069) by Yufeisan-3 compared to control. Yufeisan-3 improved nutrient digestibility and ruminal enzyme activity, and modified fermentation and microbial community, maybe due to the presence of Herba agastaches, Cortex phellodendri and Gypsum fibrosum., (© 2018 Japanese Society of Animal Science.)

Biogenic manganese oxides (bio-MnO₂) have been shown to absorb minor metals. Bioreactor cultivation of heterotrophic manganese oxidizing bacteria (MnOB), which produce bio-MnO₂ via oxidation of Mn (II), can be expected to be involved in a promising system for removal and recovery of minor metals from wastewater. However, MnOB enrichment in wastewater treatment is difficult. This study investigated whether MnOB can be cultivated when coupled with nitrification in a system in which soluble microbial products (SMP) from nitrifiers are provided to MnOB as a substrate. A downflow hanging sponge (DHS) reactor was applied for MnOB cultivation with ammonium (NH₄⁺) and Mn (II) continuously supplied. During long-term operation, Mn (II) oxidation was successfully established at a rate of 48 g Mn m⁻³ d⁻¹ and bio-MnO₂ that formed on the sponges were recovered from the bottom of the reactor. The results also revealed that Ni and Co added to the influent were simultaneously removed. Microbial 16S rRNA gene clone analysis identified nitrifiers supporting MnOB growth and showed that only one clone of Bacillus subtilis, which was affiliated with a known MnOB cluster, was present, suggesting the existence of other novel bacteria with the ability to oxidize Mn (II).

Objective: To establish an animal model of acute blunt scrotal trauma (BST) and evaluate the types of lesion by conventional ultrasonography (CUS) and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS)., Methods: We made acute BST models in 21 healthy male New Zealand rabbits by striking 3 - 12 times the unilateral testes randomly selected with a 0. 5 kg iron ball falling freely from a 30 cm height. Then we evaluated the lesion types in the models by CUS and CEUS and verified our evaluation against pathological results., Results: Acute BST models were successfully established in all the 21 animals, including contusion in 10, hematoma in 6, and rupture in 5, all confirmed by pathology. CUS clearly manifested the morphology, internal echoes, and blood flow of the testes, but had a low rate of accurate diagnosis in testicular contusion for over 6 hours as well as in complex lesions. CEUS revealed an earlier perfusion of the contrast agent and shorter arriving time (AT) and time to peak intensity ( TP) in testicular contusion than in the control testes (P <0.05) , but showed no statistically significant difference between the two groups in the half time of descending peak intensity (P>0.05). For testicular hematoma, contrast agent clearly presented its outline and a delayed low enhancement in the surrounding tissue, with significant differences from the control in AT and TTP. In severe testis rupture, occasional outflow but no perfusion of contrast agent was observed., Conclusion: BST models can be established in rabbits by repeated strikes of the unilateral testes lesion of contrast agent was observed. with a freely falling iron ball. Simple contusion injury can be induced by less than 6 strikes, while complex injuries can be inflicted by more than 10. Combined application of CUS and CEUS can improve the accuracy of diagnosis of different types of lesion.

Objective: To evaluate contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in detecting testicular perfusion in acute testis contusion., Methods: We established the model of testis contusion in 11 healthy male New Zealand rabbits by randomly hitting one side of the scrotum under general anesthesia. We examined the bilateral scrotums of all the animals before, immediately after and at 2, 4 and 6 hours after modeling by color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) and CEUS, and analyzed the time-intensity curve (TIC), arriving time (AT), time to peak intensity (TTP), peak intensity (PI), half time of descending peak intensity (HT) and area under the curve (AUC) in the healthy and injured testis, respectively., Results: CEUS exhibited a higher sensitivity in detecting tissue perfusion than CDFI. The mode of contrast agent perfusion in testicular contusion was fast in and slow out. There were no evident differences between the contused and the healthy testis in AT, TTP and PI before modeling. The contused testis showed significantly earlier AT and TTP, higher PI and larger AUC (P < 0.05) than the healthy one at different time points after modeling, but no statistically significant difference was found in HT (P > 0.05)., Conclusion: Accurate parameters of testicular perfusion in acute testis contusion can be quantitatively obtained by CEUS, which are of important value for the diagnosis of testis contusion.

Moderate oral sedation is used in pediatric dentistry for safe delivery of dental care to children. However, there is a paucity of data on the effects of pediatric dental sedations after discharge of children from the dental office. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the incidence of adverse events occurring with meperidine and hydroxyzine versus midazolam alone 8 and 24 hours after sedation in pediatric dental patients. In this prospective study, a convenience sample of 46 healthy children presenting to a private pediatric dental practice for dental treatment needs was selected. A telephone survey of the parents of children sedated with either meperidine and hydroxyzine or midazolam alone was conducted 8 and 24 hours after the administration of sedation medications. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, frequency and proportion analysis, and Fisher exact test. Forty children were sedated with meperidine and hydroxyzine, and 6 who were sedated with midazolam. In both groups, 50% of the children slept in the car on the way home. Three children in the meperidine and hydroxyzine group vomited in the car. A significantly larger proportion of children in the meperidine and hydroxyzine group experienced prolonged sleep at home (P = .015). More children in the midazolam group exhibited irritability in the first 8 hours (P = .07). There were no statistical differences between the 2 groups with respect to incidence of pain, fever, vomiting, sleeping in the car, snoring, and difficulty in waking up. The lingering effects of orally administered sedation medications can lead to prolonged sleep, irritability, and vomiting in children after they have been discharged from the dental clinic. Most of these events occurred within the first 8 hours, but in some children the effects were seen up to 24 hours later.

Objective: To explore the application value of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in the diagnosis of acute experimental incomplete testicular torsion., Methods: Seven incomplete and 1 complete testicular torsion models were established in 8 healthy hybrid dogs by twisting unilateral spermatic cord. The twisted testes were included in the model group and the healthy ones in the control. All the dogs underwent CEUS before, immediately after, and/or 6 hours after the torsion, followed by time-intensity curve analysis., Results: The arriving time (AT) and the time to peak (TTP) of the contrast agents in the bilateral testes were almost coincident, and the peak intensity (PI) and the area under the curve (AUC) in the bilateral testes basically the same before the torsion. The incompletely torsion testes showed delayed perfusion of contrast agents, prolonged AT and 'TP, and decreased PI and AUC as compared with the contralateral testes (P < 0.05), while the completely torsion one exhibited no perfusion all the time., Conclusion: CEUS has a very high application value in the diagnosis of acute incomplete testicular torsion.

The objective of this study is to propose a more accurate and faster MTT [3-(4,5-dimethyl thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide] colorimetric assay (MCA) for quantitative measurement of polypeptide bacteriocins in solutions with nisin as an example. After an initial incubation of nisin and indicator bacterium Micrococcus luteus NCIB 8166 in tubes, MTT was added for another incubation period. After that, nisin was quantified by estimating the number of viable bacteria based on measuring the amount of purple formazan produced by cleavage of yellow tetrazolium salt MTT. Then MCA was compared to a standard agar diffusion assay (ADA). The results suggested a high correlation coefficient (r(2)=0.975+/-0.004) between optical density (OD) and the inhibitory effect of nisin on a bacterial strain Micrococcus luteus NCIB 8166 at a range of 0.125-32 IU/ml. The MCA described in this study was very quick. Quantification of nisin took only 7-8 h and the detection limit was at the level of 0.125 IU/ml when compared to 12 IU/ml and 24-28 h for ADA. The MCA provides an accurate and rapid method for quantification of nisin in solutions and is expected to be used for quantification of other antimicrobial substances.

Nisin is an antimicrobial polypeptide produced by Lactococcus lactis and is believed nontoxic to humans. The objective of this study was to evaluate a nisin-based formulation for the treatment of bovine clinical mastitis in lactating dairy cattle. A total of 92 cows with 107 clinically mastitic quarters were randomly assigned to nisin- (48 cows with 51 quarters) and gentamicin (GM)-treated (44 cows with 56 quarters) groups. In the nisin-treated group, cows received an intramammary infusion of nisin at a dose of 2,500,000 IU; in the GM-treated group, intramammary infusion of GM was administered at a dose of 0.8 g. Results indicated that nisin offered a clinical cure rate similar to GM (90.2 vs. 91.1%) and no difference in bacteriological cure rate than GM-treated group (60.8 vs. 44.6%, respectively). Proportion of the quarters with milk somatic cell counts <500,000 cells/mL was not different in the nisin-treated group (50.0 and 47.8%) compared with the GM-treated group (33.3 and 37.3%) 1 and 2 wk after treatment. Of 17 Staphylococcus aureus isolates, 82.5% were resistant to penicillin, and 35.3% to GM, but none of them to nisin. Nisin therapy eliminated 54.5% (6 of 11) of S. aureus IMI, whereas GM eliminated 33.3% (2 of 6). Nisin in milk (4.5 +/- 0.8 IU/mL) was detected only at 12 h following intramammary infusion, which was much lower than the upper limit (500 mg/mL) allowed as preservative in milk by the China authority. Because of its efficacy in the treatment of bovine clinical mastitis, especially resistant Staph. aureus-caused IMI, as well as its safety in humans, nisin deserves further study to clarify its effects on mastitis caused by different mastitis pathogens on a larger scale.

Objective: To evaluate the ultrasonographic changes in the epididymis after long-term vasectomy., Methods: Sixty-four patients with a history of vasectomy for more than 10 years (vasectomy group) and another 60 without vasectomy (control group) were included in the study. The patients were referred to scrotal ultrasonography for epididymal indications. The shape, thickness and internal echoes of the head, body and tail of the epididymis were observed with high frequency ultrasonography (HFU), and the blood flow changes were observed with color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) or color Doppler power imaging (CDPI)., Results: Significantly higher rates were found in the vasectomy group than in the control: thickened body (64.1% vs 15.0%) and tail (78.1% vs 51.7%) of the epididymis, thickened head, body and tail (42.2% vs 8.3%) of the epididymis, and epididymal tubular ectasia (54.7% vs 8.3%). However, increased blood flow in the epididymis was seen at a significantly lower rate in the vasectomy group than in the control (15.6% vs 61.7%)., Conclusion: The ultrasonographic changes in the epididymis after long-term vasectomy were mainly epididymis thickening and epididymal tubular ectasia, mostly with no or diminished blood flow in the epididymis.
