26. Dual-Atom Co/Ni Electrocatalyst Anchored at the Surface-Modified Ti3C2TxMXene Enables Efficient Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Abstract

Dual-atom catalytic sites on conductive substrates offer a promising opportunity for accelerating the kinetics of multistep hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER, respectively). Using MXenes as substrates is a promising strategy for depositing those dual-atom electrocatalysts, if the efficient surface anchoring strategy ensuring metal-substrate interactions and sufficient mass loading is established. We introduce a surface-modification strategy of MXene substrates by preadsorbing L-tryptophan molecules, which enabled attachment of dual-atom Co/Ni electrocatalyst at the surface of Ti3C2Txby forming N–Co/Ni-O bonds, with mass loading reaching as high as 5.6 wt %. The electron delocalization resulting from terminated O atoms on MXene substrates, N atoms in L-tryptophan anchoring moieties, and catalytic metal atoms Co and Ni provides an optimal adsorption strength of intermediates and boosts the HER and OER kinetics, thereby notably promoting the intrinsic activity of the electrocatalyst. CoNi-Ti3C2Txelectrocatalyst displayed HER and OER overpotentials of 31 and 241 mV at 10 mA cm–2, respectively. Importantly, the CoNi-Ti3C2Txelectrocatalyst also exhibited high operational stability for both OER and HER over 100 h at an industrially relevant current density of 500 mA cm–2. Our study provided guidance for constructing dual-atom active metal sites on MXene substrates to synergistically enhance the electrochemical efficiency and stability of the energy conversion and storage systems.

Abstract

Noble metal Pt‐based catalysts have slow water dissociation kinetics at high pH conditions, making it difficult for water molecules to be electrochemically activated. Utilizing ligand effect and strain effect to tailor catalytic active sites is a common method, while the understanding of mechanism of their interaction remains obscure due to the complexity of the process. This study proposes a pulse‐induced torsional strained PtRu mesocrystals (PtRu MCs) with 20 times higher mass activity than commercial Pt/C. The combination of experimental results and theoretical calculations reveals that the ligand effect induced by Ru doping accelerates the kinetics of the water dissociation reaction, while the pulse‐induced torsion strained dominates the thermodynamic optimization of the hydrogen adsorption reaction. The structure‐activity relationship defined by the synergistic effect under the complementary advantages of the strain and doping provides guidance for the design of future basic hydrogen evolution catalysts. Abstract

Buckling of the longitudinal rebar is one of the main forms of plastic hinge failure in reinforced concrete (RC) columns after an earthquake. This rebar buckling significantly impacts the seismic bearing capacity and energy dissipation capacity. To restrain the development of longitudinal rebar buckling behavior and delay the degradation of lateral strength in RC columns, this paper developed a new type of buckling restraint rebar (BRR) consisting of three components: longitudinal rebar, a restraint sleeve, and foam material. First, the BRR mechanical properties under compression and tension‐compression cyclic loading were obtained through quasi‐static loading tests. Then, the BRR compression and tension‐compression cyclic loading processes were numerically simulated based on ABAQUS finite element software. The simulated results were compared with the test results. Finally, a stress–strain constitutive model for this new BRR was proposed based on this study. Results showed that the restraint sleeve could significantly enhance the lateral stiffness and the bearing capacity of longitudinal reinforcement after yielding. The compressive performance of BRR was mainly affected by the length and wall thickness of the sleeve. The cyclic performance was mainly affected by the length of the sleeve and the clearance between the sleeve and the reinforcement. The BRR constitutive model proposed in this paper can accurately reflect the influence of restraint sleeves on the stiffness of longitudinal reinforcement after yielding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

© 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim Constructing heterostructures with abundant interfaces is essential for integrating the multiple functionalities in single entities. Herein, the synthesis of NiSe2/CoSe2 heterostructures with different interfacial densities via an innovative strategy of successive ion injection is reported. The resulting hybrid electrocatalyst with dense heterointerfaces exhibits superior electrocatalytic properties in an alkaline electrolyte, superior to other benchmarks and precious metal catalysts. Advanced synchrotron techniques, post structural characterizations, and density functional theory (DFT) simulations reveal that the introduction of atomic-level interfaces can lower the oxidation overpotential of bimetallic Ni and Co active sites (whereas Ni2+ can be more easily activated than Co2+) and induce the electronic interaction between the core selenides and surface in situ generated oxides/hydroxides, which play a critical role in synergistically reducing energetic barriers and accelerating reaction kinetics for catalyzing the oxygen evolution. Hence, the heterointerface structure facilitates the catalytic performance enhancement via increasing the intrinsic reactivity of metallic atoms and enhancing the synergistic effect between the inner selenides and surface oxidation species. This work not only complements the understanding on the origins of the activity of electrocatalysts based on metal selenides, but also sheds light on further surface and interfacial engineering of advanced hybrid materials.
