Abstract

Introduction: The Medium Energy X-ray telescope (ME) is a collimated X-ray telescope onboard the Insight hard X-ray modulation telescope (Insight-HXMT) satellite. It has 1728 Si-PIN pixels readout using 54 low noise application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). ME covers the energy range of 5-30 keV and has a total detection area of 952 cm2. The typical energy resolution of ME at the beginning of the mission is 3 keV at 17.8 keV (Full Width at Half Maximum, FWHM) and the time resolution is 255 us. In this study, we present the in-orbit performance of ME in its first 5 years of operation. Methods: The performance of ME was monitored using onboard radioactive sources and astronomical X-ray objects. ME carries six 241Am radioactive sources for onboard calibration, which can continuously illuminate the calibration pixels. The long-term performance evolution of ME can be quantified using the properties of the accumulated spectra of the calibration pixels. In addition, observations of the Crab Nebula and the pulsar were used to check the long-term evolution of the detection efficiency as a function of energy. Conclusion: After 5 years of operation, 742 cm2 of the Si-PIN pixels were still working normally. The peak positions of 241Am emission lines gradually shifted to the high energy region, implying a slow increase in ME gain of 1.43%. A comparison of the ME spectra of the Crab Nebula and the pulsar shows that the E-C relations and the redistribution matrix file are still acceptable for most data analysis works, and there is no detectable variation in the detection efficiency.

Abstract

Here we report the spectral-timing results of the black hole X-ray binary 4U 1630-47 during its 2021 outburst using observations from the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in 1.6--4.2 Hz and quasi-regular modulation (QRM) near 60 mHz are detected during the outburst. The mHz QRM has a fractional rms of 10%--16% in the 8--35 keV energy band with a Q factor (frequency/width) of 2--4. Benefiting from the broad energy band of hxmt, we study the energy dependence of the 60 mHz QRM in 1--100 keV for the first time. We find that the fractional rms of the mHz QRM increases with photon energy, while the time lags of the mHz QRM are soft and decrease with photon energy. Fast recurrence of the mHz QRM, in a timescale of less than one hour, has been observed during the outburst. During this period, the corresponding energy spectra moderately change when the source transitions from the QRM state to the non-QRM state. The QRM phenomena also shows a dependence with the accretion rate. We suggest that the QRM could be caused by an unknown accretion instability aroused from the corona.

Abstract

The origin(s) and mechanism(s) of fast radio bursts (FRBs), which are short radio pulses from cosmological distances, have remained a major puzzle since their discovery. We report a strong Quasi-Periodic Oscillation(QPO) of 40 Hz in the X-ray burst from the magnetar SGR J1935+2154 and associated with FRB 200428, significantly detected with the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) and also hinted by the Konus-Wind data. QPOs from magnetar bursts have only been rarely detected; our 3.4 sigma (p-value is 2.9e-4) detection of the QPO reported here reveals the strongest QPO signal observed from magnetars (except in some very rare giant flares), making this X-ray burst unique among magnetar bursts. The two X-ray spikes coinciding with the two FRB pulses are also among the peaks of the QPO. Our results suggest that at least some FRBs are related to strong oscillation processes of neutron stars. Abstract

We describe the timing system and the timing calibration results of the three payloads on-board the Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT). These three payloads are the High Energy X-ray telescope (HE, 20-250 keV), the Medium Energy X-ray telescope (ME, 5-30 keV) and the low Energy X-ray telescope (LE, 1-10 keV). We present a method to correct the temperature-dependent period response and the long-term variation of the on-board crystal oscillator, especially for ME that does not carry a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator. The time of arrivals (ToAs) of the Crab pulsar are measured to evaluate the accuracy of the timing system. As the ephemeris of the Crab pulsar given by Jodrell Bank observatory has systematic errors around 40 {\mu}s (Rots et al. 2014), we use the quasi-simultaneous observations of the X-ray Timing Instrument (XTI) on-board the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) to produce the Crab ephemerides and to verify the timing system of Insight-HXMT. The energy-dependent ToAs' offsets relative to the NICER measurements including physical and instrumental origins are about 24.7{\mu}s, 10.1{\mu}s and 864.7{\mu}s, and the systematic errors of the timing system are determined as 12.1{\mu}s, 8.6{\mu}s, and 15.8{\mu}s, for HE, ME and LE respectively., Comment: 29 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS

Abstract

A black hole X-ray binary produces hard X-ray radiation from its corona and disk when the accreting matter heats up. During an outburst, the disk and corona co-evolves with each other. However, such an evolution is still unclear in both its geometry and dynamics. Here we report the unusual decrease of the reflection fraction in MAXI J1820+070, which is the ratio of the coronal intensity illuminating the disk to the coronal intensity reaching the observer, as the corona is observed to contrast during the decay phase. We postulate a jet-like corona model, in which the corona can be understood as a standing shock where the material flowing through. In this dynamical scenario, the decrease of the reflection fraction is a signature of the corona's bulk velocity. Abstract

We present the calibration of the Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) X-ray satellite, which can be used to perform timing and spectral studies of bright X-ray sources. Insight-HXMT carries three main payloads onboard: the High Energy X-ray telescope (HE), the Medium Energy X-ray telescope (ME) and the Low Energy X-ray telescope (LE). In orbit, the radioactive sources, activated lines, the fluorescence lines and celestial sources are used to calibrate the energy scale and energy resolution of the payloads. The Crab nebular is adopted as the primary effective area calibrator and empirical functions are constructed to modify the simulated effective areas of the three payloads respectively. The systematic errors of HE, compared to the model of the Crab nebular, are less than 2% in 28--120 keV and 2%--10% above 120 keV. The systematic errors of ME are less than 1.5% in 10--35 keV. The systematic errors of LE are less than 1% in 1--7 keV except the Si K--edge (1.839 keV, up to 1.5%) and less than 2% in 7--10 keV., Comment: 14 pages, 28 figures, accepted by Journal of High Energy Astrophysics

Abstract

As China's first X-ray astronomical satellite, the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT), which was dubbed as Insight-HXMT after the launch on June 15, 2017, is a wide-band (1-250 keV) slat-collimator-based X-ray astronomy satellite with the capability of all-sky monitoring in 0.2-3 MeV. It was designed to perform pointing, scanning and gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations and, based on the Direct Demodulation Method (DDM), the image of the scanned sky region can be reconstructed. Abstract

The Medium Energy X-ray telescope (ME) is one of the three main telescopes on board the Insight Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) astronomy satellite. ME contains 1728 pixels of Si-PIN detectors sensitive in 5-30 keV with a total geometrical area of 952 cm2. Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chips, VA32TA6, is used to achieve low power consumption and low readout noise. The collimators define three kinds of field of views (FOVs) for the telescope, 1{\deg}{\times}4{\deg}, 4{\deg}{\times}4{\deg}, and blocked ones. Combination of such FOVs can be used to estimate the in-orbit X-ray and particle background components. The energy resolution of ME is ~3 keV at 17.8 keV (FWHM) and the time resolution is 255 {\mu}s. Abstract

We present the observational results from a detailed timing analysis of the black hole candidate Swift J1658.2-4242 during its 2018 outburst with the observations of Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT), Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) and AstroSat in 0.1-250keV. The evolution of intensity, hardness and integrated fractional root mean square (rms) observed by Insight-HXMT and NICER are presented in this paper. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed by NICER (0.8-3.5Hz) and Insight-HXMT (1-1.6Hz) are also reported in this work. The features of the QPOs are analysed with an energy range of 0.5-50keV. The relations between QPO frequency and other characteristics such as intensity, hardness and QPO rms are carefully studied. The timing and spectral properties indicate that Swift J1658.2-4242 is a black hole binary system. Besides, the rms spectra of the source calculated from the simultaneous observation of Insight-HXMT, NICER and AstroSat support the Lense-Thirring origin of the QPOs. Abstract

In this paper we present the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission - eXTP. eXTP is a space science mission designed to study fundamental physics under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. The mission aims at determining the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, measuring effects of QED, and understanding the dynamics of matter in strong-field gravity. In addition to investigating fundamental physics, eXTP will be a very powerful observatory for astrophysics that will provide observations of unprecedented quality on a variety of galactic and extragalactic objects. In particular, its wide field monitoring capabilities will be highly instrumental to detect the electro-magnetic counterparts of gravitational wave sources. The paper provides a detailed description of: (1) the technological and technical aspects, and the expected performance of the instruments of the scientific payload; (2) the elements and functions of the mission, from the spacecraft to the ground segment., Comment: Accepted for publication on Sci. Abstract

Finding the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart of binary compact star merger, especially the binary neutron star (BNS) merger, is critically important for gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, cosmology and fundamental physics. On Aug. 17, 2017, Advanced LIGO and \textit{Fermi}/GBM independently triggered the first BNS merger, GW170817, and its high energy EM counterpart, GRB 170817A, respectively, resulting in a global observation campaign covering gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio as well as neutrinos. The High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard \textit{Insight}-HXMT (Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) is the unique high-energy gamma-ray telescope that monitored the entire GW localization area and especially the optical counterpart (SSS17a/AT2017gfo) with very large collection area ($\sim$1000 cm$^2$) and microsecond time resolution in 0.2-5 MeV. In addition, \textit{Insight}-HXMT quickly implemented a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation to scan the GW localization area for potential X-ray emission from the GW source. Although it did not detect any significant high energy (0.2-5 MeV) radiation from GW170817, its observation helped to confirm the unexpected weak and soft nature of GRB 170817A. Meanwhile, \textit{Insight}-HXMT/HE provides one of the most stringent constraints (~10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-6}$ erg/cm$^2$/s) for both GRB170817A and any other possible precursor or extended emissions in 0.2-5 MeV, which help us to better understand the properties of EM radiation from this BNS merger. 15. Epitaxial p-Si/CsPbBr3 heterostructure photodetector with enhanced green responsivity.

Abstract

Traditional silicon are expected to be integrated with emerging halide perovskites to form semiconductor heterostructures, which can facilitate the realization of more modern electronics and optoelectronics but not only solar cells. Currently, the deposition of perovskite films onto silicon substrates predominantly relies on spin-coating techniques, which inherently pose challenges, such as stringent growth prerequisites, compromised film integrity, and inability to foster robust interfacial tuning between the silicon and perovskite films. In this Letter, we report the epitaxial growth of a (100)-oriented CsPbBr3 film directly on a p-type silicon (100) substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), which offers precision control over the interface between the substrate and film. This p-Si/n-CsPbBr3 semiconductor heterostructure manifests distinct p–n heterojunction behavior, characterized by current rectification in the dark state, which indicates the efficient charge separation and transport mechanisms. The device demonstrates visible photodetection capabilities from 400 to 700 nm, showcasing versatility in spectral response. Notably, under 520 nm laser illumination, the device exhibited a remarkable responsivity of 780 mA/W due to electron tunneling from silicon to perovskite film as a direct result of the epitaxial interface, coupled with millisecond-scale response and recovery times, highlighting its potential for high-speed and sensitive photodetector applications. These findings underscore the significant promise of PLD-mediated growth of high-quality epitaxial halide perovskite films on silicon substrates and the formation of heterostructure as a viable route toward complex thin superlattices and integrated devices. Abstract

At present, spin coating is commonly used for perovskite film detectors, which has large photocurrent in the dark state due to the poor control on film growth and low crystal quality. In this Letter, pulsed laser deposition has been introduced to grow high quality CsPbBr3 epitaxial films, and the effect of substrate temperature on the film quality was studied during the epitaxial process. Planar metal–semiconductor–metal photoconductive detectors based on such epitaxial CsPbBr3 thin films with dark current as low as 11 pA at a bias voltage of 2 V was achieved. Under the illumination of a 450 nm laser with a power density of 0.65 μW cm−2, the responsivity, external quantum efficiency, and detectivity of the devices reach 12.796 AW−1, 2996%, and 3.38 × 1014 Jones, respectively. The maximum on/off ratio can be 2.38 × 105 under high-intensity 450 nm laser irradiation of 148 mW cm−2. In contrast, the spin-coated CsPbBr3 film-based detector with the same device configuration exhibit dark current that is two orders of magnitude higher and an on/off ratio of three orders of magnitude smaller than those of the epitaxial film devices. Therefore, due to their high-quality, thickness-control, and easy-integration, such epitaxial perovskite thin films can be used as a platform for the study of more functionalities of halide perovskite semiconductors and related devices. Thanks to its very large collecting area, good spectral resolution and unprecedented polarimetry capabilities, eXTP will explore the properties of matter and the propagation of light in the most extreme conditions found in the Universe. eXTP will, in addition, be a powerful X-ray observatory. The mission will continuously monitor the X-ray sky, and will enable multiwavelength and multi-messenger studies. The mission is currently in phase B, which will be completed in the middle of 2022. © 2022 SPIE. Abstract

The enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission (eXTP) is a flagship observatory for X-ray timing, spectroscopy and polarimetry developed by an International Consortium. Thanks to its very large collecting area, good spectral resolution and unprecedented polarimetry capabilities, eXTP will explore the properties of matter and the propagation of light in the most extreme conditions found in the Universe. eXTP will, in addition, be a powerful X-ray observatory. The mission will continuously monitor the X-ray sky, and will enable multiwavelength and multi-messenger studies. The mission is currently in phase B, which will be completed in the middle of 2022.

The purpose of this study was to detect that GS Rg1 attenuates cardiac oxidative stress and inflammation in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats (DM).Methods: Cardiac function was assessed by heart rate and blood pressure. Markers relevant to myocardial oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity, and inflammatory reaction factors were detected. The mRNA and protein expression were detected by RT-qPCR and Western blot, respectively.Results: GS Rg1 treatment significantly reduced the symptoms of cardiac hypertrophy and hypertension, and also decreased oxidative stress, inflammation response, NF-κB expression and NLRP3 inflammasome expression. GS Rg1 enhanced mitochondrial biogenesis by increasing PGC-1α, complex III and complex Ⅳ expression. The purpose of this study was to detect that GS Rg1 attenuates cardiac oxidative stress and inflammation in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats (DM).Methods: Cardiac function was assessed by heart rate and blood pressure. Markers relevant to myocardial oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity, and inflammatory reaction factors were detected. The mRNA and protein expression were detected by RT-qPCR and Western blot, respectively.Results: GS Rg1 treatment significantly reduced the symptoms of cardiac hypertrophy and hypertension, and also decreased oxidative stress, inflammation response, NF-κB expression and NLRP3 inflammasome expression. GS Rg1 enhanced mitochondrial biogenesis by increasing PGC-1α, complex III and complex â…£ expression. Abstract

Astrophysics with All-Sky X-Ray observations: 3rd International MAXI Workshop (RIKEN, 10-12 June 2008), HXMT is an X-ray astronomy satellite consisting of three slat-collimated instruments, the High Energy X-ray Instrument (HE), the Medium Energy X-ray Instrument (ME), and the Low Energy X-ray Instrument (LE). HE is sensitive in 20 - 250 keV. It contains 18 individual cylindrical NaI(Tl)/CsI(Na) phoswich modules, each with an area of 283.5 sq cm and a field of view (FOV) of 5.7 deg x 1.1 deg (FWHM) each. ME is sensitive in 5 - 30 keV. It contains 3 individual Si-PIN detector arrays with an FOV of 5.7 deg x 1.1 deg each, and the total collection area is 952 sq cm. LE uses the Swept Charge Device as the detector which is sensitive in 1 - 15 keV. LE also contains 3 individual detector arrays each with two kinds of FOVs, 5.7 deg x 1.1 deg and 5.7 deg x 2.2 deg, so as to study the cosmic X-ray background in this energy band. The total collecting area of LE is 384 sq cm. HXMT will perform a broad band (1 - 250 keV) X-ray all-sky imaging survey with both high sensitivity and high spatial resolution, as well as making pointed observations of X-ray sources to study their broadband spectroscopic and multi-wavelength temporal properties in details. The 3-sigma continuum sensitivity of HXMT is about 0.5 mCrab (@100 keV, 10(exp 5) s). HXMT was proposed in 1994 and is scheduled to be launched around 2010. Abstract

Finding the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart of binary compact star merger, especially the binary neutron star (BNS) merger, is critically important for gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, cosmology and fundamental physics. On Aug. 17, 2017, Advanced LIGO and Fermi/GBM independently triggered the first BNS merger, GW170817, and its high energy EM counterpart, GRB 170817A, respectively, resulting in a global observation campaign covering gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio as well as neutrinos. The High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard Insight-HXMT (Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) is the unique high-energy gamma-ray telescope that monitored the entire GW localization area and especially the optical counterpart (SSS17a/AT2017gfo) with very large collection area (~1000 cm) and microsecond time resolution in 0.2-5 MeV. In addition, Insight-HXMT quickly implemented a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation to scan the GW localization area for potential X-ray emission from the GW source. Although Insight-HXMT did not detect any significant high energy (0.2-5 MeV) radiation from GW170817, its observation helped to confirm the unexpected weak and soft nature of GRB 170817A. Meanwhile, Insight-HXMT/HE provides one of the most stringent constraints (~10 to 10 erg/cm/s) for both GRB170817A and any other possible precursor or extended emissions in 0.2-5 MeV, which help us to better understand the properties of EM radiation from this BNS merger. Therefore the observation of Insight-HXMT constitutes an important chapter in the full context of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observation of this historical GW event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this paper we present the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission—eXTP. eXTP is a space science mission designed to study fundamental physics under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. The mission aims at determining the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, measuring effects of QED, and understanding the dynamics of matter in strong-field gravity. In addition to investigating fundamental physics, eXTP will be a very powerful observatory for astrophysics that will provide observations of unprecedented quality on a variety of galactic and extragalactic objects. In particular, its wide field monitoring capabilities will be highly instrumental to detect the electro-magnetic counterparts of gravitational wave sources. The paper provides a detailed description of: (1) the technological and technical aspects, and the expected performance of the instruments of the scientific payload; (2) the elements and functions of the mission, from the spacecraft to the ground segment.

Abstract

Anode floating voltage is predicted and investigated for silicon drift detectors (SDDs) with an active area of 5 mm(2) fabricated by a double-side parallel technology. It is demonstrated that the anode floating voltage increases with the increasing inner ring voltage, and is almost unchanged with the external ring voltage. The anode floating voltage will not be affected by the back electrode biased voltage until it reaches the full-depleted voltage (-50 V) of the SDD. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the anode floating voltage is equal to the sum of the inner ring voltage and the built-in potential between the p(+) inner ring and the n(+) anode. A fast checking method before detector encapsulation is proposed by employing the anode floating voltage along with checking the leakage current, potential distribution and drift properties.

Abstract

In this paper we present the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission - eXTP. eXTP is a space science mission designed to study fundamental physics under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. The mission aims at determining the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, measuring effects of QED, and understanding the dynamics of matter in strong-field gravity. In addition to investigating fundamental physics, eXTP will be a very powerful observatory for astrophysics that will provide observations of unprecedented quality on a variety of galactic and extragalactic objects. In particular, its wide field monitoring capabilities will be highly instrumental to detect the electro-magnetic counterparts of gravitational wave sources. The paper provides a detailed description of: (1) the technological and technical aspects, and the expected performance of the instruments of the scientific payload; (2) the elements and functions of the mission, from the spacecraft to the ground segment., Accepted for publication on Sci.
