Abstract

In the last decade phase change materials (PCM) research has switched from practical application in optical data storage toward electrical phase change random access memory technologies (PCRAM). As these devices are commercialised, we expect the research direction to switch once again toward electrical-photonic devices. The objective of this review is to introduce the concepts in PCM-tuned photonics. We will start by highlighting the key works in the field, before concentrating on PCM-tuned Metal-Dielectric-Metal (MDM) structures. We will discuss how to design tuneable-MDM photonics devices, their advantages, and their limitations. 6. Giant Enhancement of Third Harmonic Generation from Ge2Sb2Te5 based Fabry-Perot Cavity

Abstract

Third-order harmonic generation (THG) plays a vital role in microscopy, optical communications etc. Conventional methods of obtaining efficient THG in macroscopic crystal is already mature; however, they will finally limit the miniaturization and integration of on-chip laser sources. To date, THG from either photonic crystals or metamaterials provide compact photonic platforms, however selection of materials remains elusive. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate a giant enhancement of THG efficiency from an air/high index Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST225) /gold multi-layered Fabry-Perot cavity. At cavity resonant wavelength in near-infrared regime, the efficiency of THG from a 50 nm thick amorphous GST225 planar film is boosted by 422 times compared to that of nonresonant conditions. Interestingly, the THG efficiency has a dramatic decrease of three orders when the structural state of GST225 is transformed from amorphous to crystalline. Our findings have a potential for achieving ultra-compact nonlinear optical source with high efficiency and switchable functionality.

Abstract

The nonlinear optical properties of silicon have great potentials for developing all-optical switches and modulators, etc. Strategies based on all dielectric silicon photonic crystals and resonators have been proposed to design the nanophotonic devices with high nonlinearity. Nevertheless, the lack of compatible configuration with the mature CMOS technology may hinder the practical applications of the all dielectric devices. In this work, we proposed a metal–silicon hybrid metasurface to generate strong third harmonic signals from an amorphous silicon (α-Si) film. By integrating the α-Si film into a gold plasmonic nanocavity and controlling the periods of the gold meta-atoms, the efficiency of the THG process is expected to be greatly boosted. Compared to the planar α-Si film, the THG signal is enhanced by a factor of ∼370. The presented results in this work may open new routes for developing various silicon photonic devices with high optical nonlinearity.

Abstract

Recently, metasurfaces based on phase-change materials (PCMs) have attracted increasing attention due to the dramatic optical properties contrast between amorphous and crystalline states. The chalcogenide PCMs can be reversibly switched by electrical or optical pulses, offering tunability and reconfigurability for the metasurfaces. In this Perspective, the latest achievements and ongoing development in reconfigurable metasurfaces based on chalcogenide PCMs are presented, including the applications in nonlinear optics, anapole control, beam steering, perfect absorbers, and polaritons.
