Abstract

Real‐time measurement of neurochemical and electrophysiological activities in the living brain is vital for advancing neuroscience and understanding brain disorders. Carbon fiber microelectrodes (CFEs) have been widely utilized for in vivo electrochemical detection due to their subcellular size, biocompatibility, and desirable electrochemical properties, and CFE arrays have demonstrated excellent multi‐site chronic sensing of dopamine (DA) and neural activity recording capabilities. However, manual fabrication of CFE arrays lacks reproducibility and batch production capacity. Alternatively, photolithography enables batch fabrication of glassy carbon (GC) multielectrode arrays (GC‐MEAs) with high resolution and reproducibility, but the insertion of planar flexible MEAs poses challenges. In this study, GC fiber‐like (GCF) MEAs are presented and fabricated using photolithography. The GCF MEAs feature fiber‐like GC electrodes with small cross‐sections, facilitating self‐insertion into brain tissue without additional aids. Batch fabrication of GCF MEAs allows for customizable designs with minimal manual intervention. Comparative analysis with CFEs demonstrates improved electrochemical properties of GCF. In vivo experiments in mouse brains confirm the GCF MEAs' ability to measure neurotransmitter concentrations and record neural activities. This novel fabrication approach is promising for multimodal electrical and chemical measurements with minimal footprint, offering significant advancements in neural interface technology for neuroscience research and clinical applications. 45. Developing sustainable catalytic methods for selective oxidation reactions

Abstract

This project has investigated industrially applicable oxidation catalysis to produce nitriles and carbonyl compounds using molecular oxygen/H2O2 as oxidants. This project can be split into three subprojects: (1) A novel Cu/TEMPO-catalyzed aerobic oxidation method has been developed for the synthesis of nitriles from alcohols or aldehydes using aqueous ammonia as N source. This method showed wide substrate scope (aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes and aliphatic alcohols) with the use of standard glassware (10 mol% Cu(OTf)2). When reactions were carried out using reactors,cheaper catalyst (CuCI2) and lower catalyst loading (1 mol%) could be applied. (2) Ligated Pd(II) complexes have been studied for the catalytic oxidation of terminal olefins to their corresponding methyl ketones. The method uses aqueous hydrogen peroxide as the terminal oxidant; a sustainable and readily accessible oxidant. The choice of ligand, counterion and solvent all have a significant effect on catalytic performance and we were able to develop systems which perform well for these challenging oxidations. (3) A homogeneous Pd(II) catalyst utilizing a simple and inexpensive amine ligand (TMEDA) allows 2-alkynoates to be prepared in high yields via an oxidative carbonylation of terminal alkynes and alcohols. The catalyst system overcomes many of the limitations of previous palladium carbonylation catalysts. It has an increased substrate scope, avoids large excesses of substrate and uses a desirable solvent. The catalyst employs oxygen as the terminal oxidant and this can be operated under safer gas mixtures.

Abstract

Mechanochemistry has developed rapidly in recent years for efficient chemicals and materials synthesis. Twin screw extrusion (TSE) is a particularly promising technique in this regard because of its continuous and scalable nature. A key aspect of TSE is that it provides high shear and mixing. Because of the high shear, it potentially also offers a way to delaminate 2‐D materials. Indeed, the synthesis of 2‐D materials in a scalable and continuous manor remains a challenge in their industrialization. Here, as a proof‐of‐principle, the automated, continuous mechanochemical exfoliation of graphite to give multi‐layer graphene (MLG, ≈6 layers) by TSE is demonstrated. To achieve this, a solid‐and‐liquid‐assisted extrusion (SLAE) process is developed in which organic additives such as pyrene are rendered liquid due to the high temperatures used, to assist with the exfoliation, and simultaneously solid sodium chloride is used as a grinding aid. This gave MLG in high yield (25 wt%) with a short residence time (8 min) and notably with negligible evidence for structural deterioration (defects or oxidation). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
