Abstract

The Super $\tau$-Charm facility (STCF) is an electron-positron collider proposed by the Chinese particle physics community. It is designed to operate in a center-of-mass energy range from 2 to 7 GeV with a peak luminosity of $0.5\times 10^{35}{\rm cm}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$ or higher. The STCF will produce a data sample about a factor of 100 larger than that by the present $\tau$-Charm factory -- the BEPCII, providing a unique platform for exploring the asymmetry of matter-antimatter (charge-parity violation), in-depth studies of the internal structure of hadrons and the nature of non-perturbative strong interactions, as well as searching for exotic hadrons and physics beyond the Standard Model. The STCF project in China is under development with an extensive R\&D program. This document presents the physics opportunities at the STCF, describes conceptual designs of the STCF detector system, and discusses future plans for detector R\&D and physics case studies.

Abstract

Motivated by the multiferroic effects and quantum magnetization plateaus in the skew chain antiferromagnets T 2 V 2 O 7 (T = Ni, Co), we have conducted a detailed density function theoretical study on Co 2 V 2 O 7. The results show that the nearest-neighbor interchain interaction (J 3 / k B = − 35.57 K) is not much greater than the intrachain interactions (J 1 / k B = − 19.54 K and J 2 / k B = 27.55 K), showing the absence of interchain dimerization of the Co ions. This indicates that the "dimer+monomer" model used for Ni 2 V 2 O 7 [Cao et al., Phys. Rev. B 106, 184409 (2022)] is no longer applicable to Co 2 V 2 O 7. Finally, the exact diagonalization of spin Hamiltonian, including anisotropic exchanges, produces the experimentally observed 1/2 and 3/4 magnetization plateaus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A new synergy mechanism between Ohkawa current drive (OKCD) of electron cyclotron (EC) waves and lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) is discovered and discussed. And the methodology to achieve this synergy effect is also introduced. Improvement of OKCD efficiency can be achieved up to a factor of ~ 2.5 in far off-axis radial region (\r{ho} > 0.6) of tokamak plasmas. Making EC wave heating the electrons of co-Ip direction and LH wave heating the electrons of counter-Ip direction, the mechanism of this new synergy effect comes from the results of electron trapping and detrapping processes. The OKCD makes the low speed barely passing electrons to be trapped (trapping process), the LHCD pulls some of the high speed barely trapped electrons out of the trapped region in velocity space (detrapping process) and accelerates the detrapped electrons to a higher speed., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We systematically calculate various flavor-changing neutral-current top-quark processes induced by supersymmetry at the Large Hadron Collider, which include five decay modes and six production channels. To reveal the characteristics of these processes, we first compare the dependence of the rates for these channels on the relevant supersymmetric parameters, then we scan the whole parameter space to find their maximal rates, including all the direct and indirect current experimental constraints on the scharm-stop flavor mixings. We find that, under all these constraints, only a few channels, through cg->t at parton-level and t-> ch, may be observable at the Large Hadron Collider., Comment: Version in PRD (refs updated)

Abstract

We study the possible signature for lepton-flavor violation processes in the scalar-lepton sector of the minimal supersymmetric model at future electron-photon colliders. We find that an $\egm$ collider can provide a good opportunity to probe the mass differences and flavor mixing angles between the sleptons of the first generation and the other two generations for the right-handed as well as the left-handed sector. The sensitivity reach for lepton-flavor violation is comparable to that obtained at an $e^+e^-$ and $e^-e^-$ collider, and is significantly better than the current bound from low-energy rare processes such as $\mu \to e \gamma$., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, RevTeX

Abstract

Tropospheric ozone significantly damages vegetation and reduces net primary productivity (NPP). We developed a stable linear NPP response model based on accumulated ozone exposure over a threshold of 40 parts per billion (ppb) (AOT40). We then estimated the effects of regional ozone damage on NPP for different vegetation types. The study suggests an average decrease in NPP of 24.7% due to ozone pollution in the North China Plain, similar to previous estimates ranging from 10.1% to 24.7%, with a maximum reduction exceeding 200 [g C m‐2 yr‐1] and more than 50%. Vegetation types such as broadleaf forests, needleleaf forest, crops, and grasses showed significant NPP decreases of 47.1%, 37.8%, 36.7%, and 44.6%, respectively. Declining NPP also had negative impacts on several Chinese crop species. Our work highlights the need for urgent and effective action to mitigate ozone pollution's substantial detrimental effects on ecosystem health and productivity. Abstract

We report the decoupling of Gd–Cr magnetism and the resulting giant magnetocaloric effect in honeycomb-lattice tellurate GdCrTeO6. This compound adopts the hexagonal structure with the space group P-3. The susceptibility curve presents a paramagnetic behavior from room temperature to 2 K. Very intriguingly, however, the heat capacity measurement probes a λ-like peak at TN = 10 K, characterizing the long-range antiferromagnetic order. This suggests that the Gd and Cr sublattices are magnetically independent, i.e., the Gd ions are paramagnetic and the strong paramagnetism nearly masks the antiferromagnetic order of Cr ions, which is further evidenced by our ESR data. The maximum magnetic entropy change at 2 K is 41.8 J kg−1 K−1 in a field range of 0–7 T and 30.3 J kg−1 K−1 for 0–3 T, larger than those of most of the Gd oxides reported. Abstract

Smoldering and flaming fires, which emit different proportions of organic (OC) and black carbon (BC, in the form of char and soot), have long been recognized in modern wildfire observations but never in a paleo-record, and little is known about their interactions with climate. Here we show that in the late glacial-early Holocene transition period, when the climate was moist, relatively high quantities of char were deposited in Linsley Pond, Connecticut, USA while soot was more abundant during the warmer and drier early Holocene interval. The highest soot mass accumulation rates (MARs) occurred at the beginning of the Holocene as fuel availability increased through the climatic transition when boreal forests were locally extirpated. These variations with time are related to the different formation pathways of char and soot, which are governed by combustion efficiency. This study provides an approach for differentiating smoldering from flaming combustion in paleo-wildfire reconstructions. Our results suggest that climate and fuel loads control the occurrence of different wildfire types and precipitation may play a key role.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Although diabetic kidney disease demonstrates both familial clustering and single nucleotide polymorphism heritability, the specific genetic factors influencing risk remain largely unknown. METHODS: To identify genetic variants predisposing to diabetic kidney disease, we performed genome-wide association study (GWAS) analyses. Through collaboration with the Diabetes Nephropathy Collaborative Research Initiative, we assembled a large collection of type 1 diabetes cohorts with harmonized diabetic kidney disease phenotypes. We used a spectrum of ten diabetic kidney disease definitions based on albuminuria and renal function. RESULTS: Our GWAS meta-analysis included association results for up to 19,406 individuals of European descent with type 1 diabetes. We identified 16 genome-wide significant risk loci. The variant with the strongest association (rs55703767) is a common missense mutation in the collagen type IV alpha 3 chain (COL4A3) gene, which encodes a major structural component of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM). Mutations in COL4A3 are implicated in heritable nephropathies, including the progressive inherited nephropathy Alport syndrome. The rs55703767 minor allele (Asp326Tyr) is protective against several definitions of diabetic kidney disease, including albuminuria and ESKD, and demonstrated a significant association with GBM width; protective allele carriers had thinner GBM before any signs of kidney disease, and its effect was dependent on glycemia. Three other loci are in or near genes with known or suggestive involvement in this condition (BMP7) or renal biology (COLEC11 and DDR1). CONCLUSIONS: The 16 diabetic kidney disease-associated loci may provide novel insights into the pathogenesis of this condition and help identify potential biologic targets for prevention and treatment.

34. Seasonal and annual variations in atmospheric Hg and Pb Isotopes in Xi'an, China

Abstract

We present a 3-year time series of lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) concentrations and isotope signatures in total suspended particulate (TSP) matter, and as total gaseous Hg (TGM) in)(fan, Northwestern China. Mean concentrations of TSP (299 +/- 120 mu g m(-3)), Pb-TSP (0.33 +/- 0.15 mu g m(-3)) and: Hg-Tsp. (0.64 +/- 0.54 ng m(-3)), and TGM (5.7 +/- 2.7 ng m(-3)) were elevated. We find that atmospheric Pb levels in winter in Xi'an have decreased by 4.6% per year since 2003, yet remain elevated relative to air quality guidelines and therefore a major health concern. delta Hg-202(Tsp) and Delta Hg-199(Tsp) averaged -0.80 +/- 0.30 parts per thousand (1 sigma) and -0.02 +/- 0.10 parts per thousand (1 sigma) and delta Hg-202(TGM) and Delta Hg-199(TGM) averaged -0.08 +/- 0.41 parts per thousand (10) and 0.00 +/- 0.04 parts per thousand (1 sigma). Relative to raw coal from Shaanxi and surrounding provinces, delta Hg-202(TSP) is enriched in the light Hg isotopes, whereas delta Hg-202(TGM) is enriched in the heavy isotopes. TSP and TGM Delta Hg-199 signatures are indistinguishable from raw coal, indicating little photochemical mass independent fractionation of atmospheric Hg in the near-field urban-industrial environment. delta Hg-202(TGM) correlates significantly with TGM levels (r(2) = 0.3, p < 0.01) and likely reflects binary mixing of local industrial TGM emissions with global background TGM.

Abstract

Heavy metal pollution in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a serious environmental and health concern in China, particularly during winter. Here, we detected 40 elements in 24 h integrated daily PM2.5 samples collected in January 2014 from three typical Chinese metropolises (Beijing, Changchun, and Chengdu) to reflect elemental spatial variations, local sources, and regional transport. The measured elemental concentrations in Changchun were 11.1% and 48.4% higher than those in Beijing and Chengdu, respectively. Thus, PM2.5 from Changchun exhibited high levels and diversity in the elemental profile (characterized by high concentrations of industrial emission elemental markers). The results of elemental ratios and Pb isotopes proved that, except for a coal combustion source, vehicular emissions contributed more to PM2.5 heavy metals in Beijing than in the other two cities; Changchun PM2.5 elements received large contributions from industrial sources, including iron and steel manufacturing, and automobile industry. Moreover, crustal dust from long-range transport of regional air masses from the northwest regions of China played a crucial role in determining elemental levels in Beijing and Changchun, accounting for more than 50% of source intensity. However, a specific dominant source was not determined in Chengdu; the contribution of anthropogenic dust, mainly from construction activities, needs to be paid attention in Chengdu eastern area. This study contributed to enhancing our understanding of elemental spatial distribution characteristics and sources and to setting more judicious standards and strategies for PM2.5 bound heavy metals in China. Abstract

In2O3 is a promising partner of Cu2O to form a Cu2O/In2O3 heterojunction system. We used x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to determine the valence band offset (VBO) of a Cu2O/In2O3 heterojunction. The valence band offset is found to be 1.43 ± 0.2 eV. Given the experimental bandgaps of 2.0 eV and 2.6 eV for Cu2O and In2O3, respectively, we calculate the band alignment of a Cu2O/In2O3 heterojunction with a conduction band offset (CBO) of 0.83 ± 0.2 eV. To apply Cu2O/In2O3 bilayers in electronic devices, it is important to determine the band alignment accurately based on the VBO and CBO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
