Abstract

Interpolation of digital elevation models becomes necessary in many situations, for instance, when constructing them from contour lines (available e.g., from nondigital cartography), or from disparity maps based on pairs of stereoscopic views, which often leaves large areas where point correspondences cannot be found reliably. The absolutely minimizing Lipschitz extension (AMLE) model is singled out as the simplest interpolation method satisfying a set of natural requirements. In particular, a maximum principle is proven, which guarantees not to introduce unnatural oscillations which is a major problem with many classical methods. We then discuss the links between the AMLE and other existing methods. In particular, we show its relation with geodesic distance transformation. We also relate the AMLE to the thin-plate method, that can be obtained by a prolongation of the axiomatic arguments leading to the AMLE, and addresses the major disadvantage of the AMLE model, namely its inability to interpolate slopes as it does for values. Nevertheless, in order to interpolate slopes, we have to give up the maximum principle and authorize the appearance of oscillations. We also discuss the possible link between the AMLE and Kriging methods that are the most widely used in the geoscience literature. We end by numerical comparison between the different methods. Abstract

A method and apparatus to extract a dense three-dimensional model of an observed scene or object from one or more sequences of images acquired with an imaging device such as a camera or camcorder, or clusters of cameras and/or camcorders. In some embodiments the method includes capturing an image sequence by a camera moving with a translateral motion, for example moving on a straight path with a fixed orientation. The images in each sequence are captured at regularly spaced sites on the straight path. In some embodiments, a device projects structured light on the observed scene. Multiple image sequences can be acquired, on different cameras on straight paths. The captured image sequences are input to a computer. The 3D structure of the scene viewed by each image sequence is computed. Dense reconstruction from EPIs is performed by interpolating the EPIs after having detecting straight segments on the EPIs. 3D models extracted from each image sequence are combined and merged to create a 3D model of the whole scene.

Abstract

Shape recognition is the field of computer vision which addresses the problem of finding out whethera query shape lies or not in a shape database, up to a certain invariance. Most shape recognition methods simplysort shapes from the database along some (dis-)similarity measure to the query shape. Their main weakness is thedecision stage, which should aim at giving a clear-cut answer to the question: “do these two shapes look alike?”In this article, the proposed solution consists in bounding the number of false correspondences of the query shapeamong the database shapes, ensuring that the obtained matches are not likely to occur “by chance”. As an application,one can decide with a parameterless method whether any two digital images share some shapes or not

Otolith are small stone growing according to an accretionary process located in fishes inner ears from which a lot can be learnt about their biology and ecology. Computer vision is one of the mean of systematic analysis of those stone. This paper describe an approach using partial differential equation and variational methods to reconstruct the morphogenesis of an otolith from an image., Les otolithes sont de petites concrétions calcaires situées dans l'oreille interne des poissons qui peuvent nous en apprendre beaucoup sur leur biologie et leur écologie. La vision par ordinateur est l'une des méthodes d'analyse systématique possible. Nous présentons ici une approche à base d'équation aux dérivées partielles et de méthodes variationnelles permettant de reconstituer la morphogénèse d'un otolithe à partir d'une image.

Abstract

We develop an axiomatic approach of vector field interpolation, which is useful as a feature extraction preprocessing step. Two operators will be singled out: the curvature operator, appearing in the total variation minimisation for image restoration and inpainting/disocclusion, and the Absolutely Minimizing Lipschitz Extension (AMLE), already known as a robust and coherent scalar image interpolation technique if we relax slightly the axioms. Numerical results, using a multiresolution scheme, show that they produce fields in accordance with the human perception of edges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
