Despite the promising performance of current video segmentation models on existing benchmarks, these models still struggle with complex scenes. In this paper, we introduce the 6th Large-scale Video Object Segmentation (LSVOS) challenge in conjunction with ECCV 2024 workshop. This year's challenge includes two tasks: Video Object Segmentation (VOS) and Referring Video Object Segmentation (RVOS). In this year, we replace the classic YouTube-VOS and YouTube-RVOS benchmark with latest datasets MOSE, LVOS, and MeViS to assess VOS under more challenging complex environments. This year's challenge attracted 129 registered teams from more than 20 institutes across over 8 countries. This report include the challenge and dataset introduction, and the methods used by top 7 teams in two tracks. Referring Video Object Segmentation is an emerging multi-modal task that aims to segment objects in the video given a natural language expression. In this work, we build two instance-centric models and fuse predicted results from frame-level and instance-level. First, we introduce instance mask into the DETR-based model for query initialization to achieve temporal enhancement and employ SAM for spatial refinement. Secondly, we build an instance retrieval model conducting binary instance mask classification whether the instance is referred. Finally, we fuse predicted results and our method achieved a score of 52.67 J&F in the validation phase and 60.36 J&F in the test phase, securing the final ranking of 3rd place in the 6-th LSVOS Challenge RVOS Track., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2406.13939

Dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) between satellite and terrestrial networks has increasingly engaged the academic and industrial sectors. Nevertheless, facilitating secure, efficient and scalable sharing continues to pose a pivotal challenge. Emerging as a promising technology to bridge the trust gap among multiple participants, blockchain has been envisioned to enable DSS in a decentralized manner. However, satellites with limited resources may struggle to support the frequent interactions required by blockchain networks. Additionally,given the extensive coverage of satellites, spectrum sharing needs vary by regions, challenging traditional blockchain approaches to accommodate differences. In this work, a partitioned, self-governed, and customized dynamic spectrum sharing approach (PSC-DSS) is proposed for spectrum sharing between satellite access networks and terrestrial access networks. This approach establishes a sharded and tiered architecture which allows various regions to manage spectrum autonomously while jointly maintaining a single blockchain ledger. Moreover, a spectrum-consensus integrated mechanism, which decouples DSS process and couples it with blockchain consensus protocol, is designed to enable regions to conduct DSS transactions in parallel and dynamically innovate spectrum sharing schemes without affecting others. Furthermore, a theoretical framework is derived to justify the stability performance of PSC-DSS. Finally, simulations and experiments are conducted to validate the advantageous performance of PSC-DSS in terms of low-overhead, high efficiency, and robust stability.

In this paper, we propose a novel diffusion-decision transformer (D2T) architecture to optimize the beamforming strategies for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication systems. The first challenge lies in the expensive computation cost to recover the real-time channel state information (CSI) from the received pilot signals, which usually requires prior knowledge of the channel distributions. To reduce the channel estimation complexity, we adopt a diffusion model to automatically learn the mapping between the received pilot signals and channel matrices in a model-free manner. The second challenge is that, the traditional optimization or reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms cannot guarantee the optimality of the beamforming policies once the channel distribution changes, and it is costly to resolve the optimized strategies. To enhance the generality of the decision models over varying channel distributions, we propose an offline pre-training and online fine-tuning decision transformer (DT) framework, wherein we first pre-train the DT offline with the data samples collected by the RL algorithms under diverse channel distributions, and then fine-tune the DT online with few-shot samples under a new channel distribution for a generalization purpose. Simulation results demonstrate that, compared with retraining RL algorithms, the proposed D2T algorithm boosts the convergence speed by 3 times with only a few samples from the new channel distribution while enhancing the average user data rate by 6%.

Pixel-level Video Understanding in the Wild Challenge (PVUW) focus on complex video understanding. In this CVPR 2024 workshop, we add two new tracks, Complex Video Object Segmentation Track based on MOSE dataset and Motion Expression guided Video Segmentation track based on MeViS dataset. In the two new tracks, we provide additional videos and annotations that feature challenging elements, such as the disappearance and reappearance of objects, inconspicuous small objects, heavy occlusions, and crowded environments in MOSE. Moreover, we provide a new motion expression guided video segmentation dataset MeViS to study the natural language-guided video understanding in complex environments. These new videos, sentences, and annotations enable us to foster the development of a more comprehensive and robust pixel-level understanding of video scenes in complex environments and realistic scenarios. The MOSE challenge had 140 registered teams in total, 65 teams participated the validation phase and 12 teams made valid submissions in the final challenge phase. Motion Expression guided Video Segmentation is a challenging task that aims at segmenting objects in the video based on natural language expressions with motion descriptions. Unlike the previous referring video object segmentation (RVOS), this task focuses more on the motion in video content for language-guided video object segmentation, requiring an enhanced ability to model longer temporal, motion-oriented vision-language data. In this report, based on the RVOS methods, we successfully introduce mask information obtained from the video instance segmentation model as preliminary information for temporal enhancement and employ SAM for spatial refinement. Finally, our method achieved a score of 49.92 J &F in the validation phase and 54.20 J &F in the test phase, securing the final ranking of 2nd in the MeViS Track at the CVPR 2024 PVUW Challenge.

Spectroscopic data, particularly diffraction data, contain detailed crystal and microstructure information and thus are crucial for materials discovery. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns are greatly effective in identifying crystals. Although machine learning (ML) has significantly advanced the analysis of powder XRD patterns, the progress is hindered by a lack of training data. To address this, we introduce SimXRD, the largest open-source simulated XRD pattern dataset so far, to accelerate the development of crystallographic informatics. SimXRD comprises 4,065,346 simulated powder X-ray diffraction patterns, representing 119,569 distinct crystal structures under 33 simulated conditions that mimic real-world variations. We find that the crystal symmetry inherently follows a long-tailed distribution and evaluate 21 sequence learning models on SimXRD. The results indicate that existing neural networks struggle with low-frequency crystal classifications. The present work highlights the academic significance and the engineering novelty of simulated XRD patterns in this interdisciplinary field.

With increasing density and heterogeneity in unlicensed wireless networks, traditional MAC protocols, such as carrier-sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) in Wi-Fi networks, are experiencing performance degradation. This is manifested in increased collisions and extended backoff times, leading to diminished spectrum efficiency and protocol coordination. Addressing these issues, this paper proposes a deep-learning-based MAC paradigm, dubbed DL-MAC, which leverages spectrum sensing data readily available from energy detection modules in wireless devices to achieve the MAC functionalities of channel access, rate adaptation and channel switch. First, we utilize DL-MAC to realize a joint design of channel access and rate adaptation. Subsequently, we integrate the capability of channel switch into DL-MAC, enhancing its functionality from single-channel to multi-channel operation. Specifically, the DL-MAC protocol incorporates a deep neural network (DNN) for channel selection and a recurrent neural network (RNN) for the joint design of channel access and rate adaptation. We conducted real-world data collection within the 2.4 GHz frequency band to validate the effectiveness of DL-MAC, and our experiments reveal that DL-MAC exhibits superior performance over traditional algorithms in both single and multi-channel environments and also outperforms single-function approaches in terms of overall performance. Additionally, the performance of DL-MAC remains robust, unaffected by channel switch overhead within the evaluated range.

The widespread use of the Internet has posed challenges to existing centralized physical infrastructure networks. Issues such as data privacy risks, service disruptions, and substantial expansion costs have emerged. To address these challenges, an innovative network architecture called Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN) has emerged. DePIN leverages blockchain technology to decentralize the control and management of physical devices, addressing limitations of traditional infrastructure network. This article provides a comprehensive exploration of DePIN, presenting its five-layer architecture, key design principles. Furthermore, it presents a detailed survey of the extant applications, operating mechanisms, and provides an in-depth analysis of market data pertaining to DePIN. Finally, it discusses a wide range of the open challenges faced by DePIN.

Traditional terrestrial communication infrastructures often fail to collect the timely information from Internet of Thing (IoT) devices in remote areas. To address this challenge, we investigate a Satellite-unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) integrated Non-terrestrial network (NTN), where the UAV is controlled by remote control center via UAV-to-Satellite connections. To maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the UAV, we optimize the UAV trajectory, power allocation, and state sensing strategies, while guaranteing the control stability and communication reliability. This challenging problem is addressed using an efficient algorithm, incorporating a Deep Q-Network (DQN)-based trajectory determination, a closed form of power allocation, and one-dimensional searching for sensing. Numerical simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of our approach. The results showcase the data size of collection has a greater impact than transmission power, and reveal the relationship among sensing interval, communication maximum power and control performance. This study provides promising solutions and valuable insights for efficient data collection in remote IoT.

In the rapidly evolving area of image synthesis, a serious challenge is the presence of complex artifacts that compromise perceptual realism of synthetic images. To alleviate artifacts and improve quality of synthetic images, we fine-tune Vision-Language Model (VLM) as artifact classifier to automatically identify and classify a wide range of artifacts and provide supervision for further optimizing generative models. Specifically, we develop a comprehensive artifact taxonomy and construct a dataset of synthetic images with artifact annotations for fine-tuning VLM, named SynArtifact-1K. The fine-tuned VLM exhibits superior ability of identifying artifacts and outperforms the baseline by 25.66%. To our knowledge, this is the first time such end-to-end artifact classification task and solution have been proposed. Finally, we leverage the output of VLM as feedback to refine the generative model for alleviating artifacts. Visualization results and user study demonstrate that the quality of images synthesized by the refined diffusion model has been obviously improved.

A fundamental requirement for quantum technologies is the ability to coherently control the interaction between electrons and photons. However, in many scenarios involving the interaction between light and matter, the exchange of linear or angular momentum between electrons and photons is not feasible, a condition known as the dipole-approximation limit. An example of a case beyond this limit that has remained experimentally elusive is when the interplay between chiral electrons and vortex light is considered, where the orbital angular momentum of light can be transferred to electrons. Here, we present a novel mechanism for such an orbital angular momentum transfer from optical vortex beams to electronic quantum Hall states. Specifically, we identify a robust contribution to the radial photocurrent, in an annular graphene sample within the quantum Hall regime, that depends on the vorticity of light. This phenomenon can be interpreted as an optical pumping scheme, where the angular momentum of photons is transferred to electrons, generating a radial current, and the current direction is determined by the vorticity of the light. Our findings offer fundamental insights into the optical probing and manipulation of quantum coherence, with wide-ranging implications for advancing quantum coherent optoelectronics.

Since the traffic administration at road intersections determines the capacity bottleneck of modern transportation systems, intelligent cooperative coordination for connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) has shown to be an effective solution. In this paper, we try to formulate a Bi-Level CAV intersection coordination framework, where coordinators from High and Low levels are tightly coupled. In the High-Level coordinator where vehicles from multiple roads are involved, we take various metrics including throughput, safety, fairness and comfort into consideration. Motivated by the time consuming space-time resource allocation framework in [1], we try to give a low complexity solution by transforming the complicated original problem into a sequential linear programming one. Based on the "feasible tunnels" (FT) generated from the High-Level coordinator, we then propose a rapid gradient-based trajectory optimization strategy in the Low-Level planner, to effectively avoid collisions beyond High-level considerations, such as the pedestrian or bicycles. Simulation results and laboratory experiments show that our proposed method outperforms existing strategies. Moreover, the most impressive advantage is that the proposed strategy can plan vehicle trajectory in milliseconds, which is promising in realworld deployments. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility, robustness and optimization of introducing personal comfort systems (PCS), apparatuses that promises in energy saving and comfort improvement, into a broader range of environments. We report a series of laboratory experiments systematically examining the effect of personalized heating in neutralizing individual, spatial and temporal variations of thermal demands. The experiments were conducted in an artificial climate chamber at -15 degC in order to simulate extreme cold environments. We developed a heating garment with 20 pieces of 20 * 20 cm2 heating cloth (grouped into 9 regions) comprehensively covering human body. Surface temperatures of the garment can be controlled independently, quickly (within 20 seconds), precisely (within 1 degC) and easily (through a tablet) up to 45 degC. Participants were instructed to adjust surface temperatures of each segment to their preferences, with their physiological, psychological and adjustment data collected. We found that active heating could significantly and stably improve thermal satisfaction. The overall TSV and TCV were improved 1.50 and 1.53 during the self-adjustment phase. Preferred heating surface temperatures for different segments varied widely. Further, even for the same segment, individual differences among participants were considerable. Such variances were observed through local heating powers, while unnoticeable among thermal perception votes. In other words, all these various differences could be neutralized given the flexibility in personalized adjustments. Our research reaffirms the paradigm of "adaptive thermal comfort" and will promote innovations on human-centric design for more efficient PCSs.
