The inverse determination of imperfect interfaces from reflection spectra of normal and oblique incident ultrasonic waves in adhesive bonds of multidirectional composites is investigated. The oblique measurements are complicated by the highly dispersed nature of oblique wave spectra at frequencies above 3MHz. Different strategies for bond property reconstruction, including a modulation method, are discussed. The relation of measured interfacial spring density to the physico-chemical model of a composite interface described by polymer molecular bonds to emulate loss of molecular strength on an adhesive composite interface is discussed. This potentially relates the interfacial (adhesion) strength (number of bonds at the adhesive substrate interface) to the spring constant (stiffness) area density (flux), which is an ultrasonically measurable parameter.

It is believed that intracranial pressure (ICP) may be elevated in microgravity because a fluid shift toward the head occurs due to loss of gravitational blood pressures. Elevated ICP may contribute to space adaptation syndrome, because as widely observed in clinical settings, elevated ICP causes headache, nausea, and projectile vomiting, which are similar to symptoms of space adaptation syndrome. However, the hypothesis that ICP is altered in microgravity is difficult to test because of the invasiveness of currently-available techniques. We have developed a new ultrasonic technique, which allows us to record ICP waveforms noninvasively. The present study was designed to understand postural effects on ICP and assess the feasibility of our new device in future flight experiments.

The present study was designed to validate our noninvasive ultrasonic technique (pulse phase locked loop: PPLL) for measuring intracranial pressure (ICP) waveforms. The technique is based upon detecting skull movements which are known to occur in conjunction with altered intracranial pressure. In bench model studies, PPLL output was highly correlated with changes in the distance between a transducer and a reflecting target (R2 = 0.977). In cadaver studies, transcranial distance was measured while pulsations of ICP (amplitudes of zero to 10 mmHg) were generated by rhythmic injections of saline. Frequency analyses (fast Fourier transformation) clearly demonstrate the correspondence between the PPLL output and ICP pulse cycles. Although theoretically there is a slight possibility that changes in the PPLL output are caused by changes in the ultrasonic velocity of brain tissue, the decreased amplitudes of the PPLL output as the external compression of the head was increased indicates that the PPLL output represents substantial skull movement associated with altered ICP. In conclusion, the ultrasound device has sufficient sensitivity to detect transcranial pulsations which occur in association with the cardiac cycle. Our technique makes it possible to analyze ICP waveforms noninvasively and will be helpful for understanding intracranial compliance and cerebrovascular circulation.

This study was designed to investigate effects of whole body tilting on intracranial compliance and pressure in six healthy volunteers by using a noninvasive ultrasonic device. Subjects were randomly tilted up or down sequentially at 60 degree, 30 degree head-up, supine, and 15 degree head-down position for one minute at each angle. We measured arterial blood pressure with a finger pressure cuff and changes in intracranial distance with an ultrasonic device. The device measures skull movement on the order of micro-meter. Our ultrasound technique demonstrates that skull movement is highly correlated (r$(circumflex){2}$=0.77) with intracranial pressure variations due to cerebral arterial pulsation. The amplitudes of arterial pressure (r$(circumflex){2}$=0.99 and those of intracranial distance changes (r$(circumflex){2}$=0.87) associated with one cardiac cycle were inversely correlated with the angle of tilt. The ratio of pulsation amplitudes for intracranial distance over arterial pressure also showed a significant increase as the angle of tilt was lowered (p=0.003). Thus, postural changes alter intracranial compliance in healthy volunteers and intracranial volume-buffering capacity is reduced in head-down position.

Exposure to microgravity elevates blood pressure and flow in the head, which may increase intracranial volume (ICV) and intracranial pressure (ICP). Rhesus monkeys exposed to simulated microgravity in the form of 6 degree head-down tilt (HDT) experience elevated ICP. With humans, twenty-four hours of 6 degree HDT bed rest increases cerebral blood flow velocity relative to pre-HDT upright posture. Humans exposed to acute 6 degree HDT experiments increased ICP, measured with the tympanic membrane displacement (TMD) technique. Other studies suggest that increased ICP in humans and cats causes measurable cranial bone movement across the sagittal suture. Due to the slightly compliant nature of the cranium, elevation of the ICP will increase ICV and transcranial distance. Currently, several non-invasive approaches to monitor ICP are being investigated. Such techniques include TMD and modal analysis of the skull. TMD may not be reliable over a large range of ICP and neither method is capable of measuring the small changes in pressure. Ultrasound, however, may reliably measure small distance changes that accompany ICP fluctuations. The purpose of our study was to develop and evaluate an ultrasound technique to measure transcranial distance changes during HDT.

Recent developments in the use of nonlinear acoustoelastic techniques for the characterization of materials are reviewed, with particular attention given to the quantitative modeling of the acoustoelastic properties of multiphase alloys in terms of material composition. Topics discussed include general theory of acoustoelasticity, models of two-phase systems, measurement techniques, acoustic nonlinearity parameters and material properties, stress-temperature dependence of sound velocity, and low field magnetoacoustics. The discussion is illustrated by results obtained for steels and aluminum alloys with second phase precipitates.

A technique is described that makes it possible to transmit and receive bulk ultrasonic waves launched from the same surface of a composite sheet by means of transducers mounted on variable angle blocks. A straightforward approach to measure the velocity and attenuation of this wave is presented. A bulk compressional wave of 930,000 cm/sec velocity was launched and received in this manner in an 8-ply unidirectional T-300-5208 epoxy composite. Preliminary results indicate that parameters associated with this wave might be sensitive to accumulated damage in a composite; thus, the technique has a potential for NDE in structures made from composite materials.

A crystalline solid is considered to consist of a large number of incoherent nonlinear acoustic radiation sources identified with the vibrating particles of the crystalline lattice. Randomization of the field, together with the assumption of a stochastically independent, fluctuating, radiation field at the absolue zero of temperature, leads to an expression of the temperature-dependent radiation field in terms of the zero-point field. The equation is identified with the Planck distribution formula of quantum mechanics in the linear field limit. The thermodynamic state functions are also obtained in terms of the nonlinear acoustic modal energies per unit mass and reduce to the results of the Debye-Einstein stochastic quantum oscillator model in the linear field limit.

Early fatigue damage in non-unidirectional multi-ply graphite/epoxy composites is manifested by a distribution of cracks and disbonds through the bulk of the material. Such damage is subtle and is difficult to detect with conventional ultrasonic technology. Consequently, a new ultrasonic measurement technique called phase-insensitive tone-burst spectroscopy has been developed. The new technique eliminates problems associated with phase cancellation and pulse shape artifacts inherent to conventional broadband ultrasonic spectral measurement systems and produces clean spectral information irrespective of specimen inhomogeneity or irregularities in surface geometry. Application of the new technique to measurements of graphite/epoxy composites has yielded frequency-domain profiles that show distinct differences in ultrasonic attenuation, attenuation slope, and velocity for each specimen experiencing a different level of fatigue damage.

Embedded single-mode optical fibers sample internal-stress fields directly. Statically loaded composite matrix emits pulsed ultrasonic waves which mechanically modulate embedded fiber and phase-modulate transmitted optical field. Modulation detected by optical interferometry and Fourier optical processing converted to electronic signal proportional to acoustic field amplitude integated along length of fiber embedded in specimen. Technique used for measurements of both high- and low-frequency CW acoustic fields as well as high-frequency transients.

The general case of acoustic-radiation stress associated with quasi-compressional and quasi-shear waves propagating in infinite and semiinfinite lossless solids of arbitrary crystalline symmetry is studied. The Boussinesq radiation stress is defined and found to depend directly on an acoustic nonlinearity parameter which characterizes the radiation-induced static strain, a stress-generalized nonlinearity parameter which characterizes the stress nonlinearity, and the energy density of the propagating wave. Application of the Boltzmann-Ehrenfest principle of adiabatic invariance to a self-constrained system described by the nonlinear equations of motion allows the acoustic-radiation-induced static strain to be identified with a self-constrained variation in the time-averaged product of the internal energy density and displacement gradient. The time-averaged product is scaled by the acoustic nonlinearity parameter and represents the first-order nonlinearity in the virial theorem. Finally, the relationship between the Boussinesq and the Cauchy radiation stress is obtained in a closed three-dimensional form.

The equations of elastic motion and their solutions are generalized in order to include nonzero homogeneous initial stresses and redefine the stress acoustic constants to include the effect of initial stress. In deriving the relationship between the stress acoustic constants and the strain-generalized Gruneisen parameters, implications in material anharmonicity and nonlinear thermoelasticity are discovered. It is found that the linear change in velocity obtained from these measurements is a nonlinear process resulting from anharmonicity in the interatomic potential. In addition, the thermal expansion coefficient can also be expressed in terms of linear combinations.

In vivo ultrasonic measurements of the depth of conductive cutaneous burns experimentally induced in anesthetized Yorkshire pigs are reported as a function of burn time for the case in which the skin surface temperature is maintained at 100 C. The data are used in the solution of the one-dimensional heat diffusion equation with time-dependent boundary conditions to obtain the threshold temperature and the energy of transformation per unit mass associated with the transition of the tissue from the state of viability to the state of necrosis. The simplicity of the mathematical model and the expediency of the ultrasonic measurements in studies of thermal injury are emphasized.

A broadband megahertz range electrostatic acoustic transducer for use in a liquid environment is described. A liquid tight enclosure includes a metallic conducting membrane as part of its outside surface and has a means inside the liquid tight enclosure for applying a tension to the membrane and for mounting an electrode such that the flat end of the electrode is aproximately parallel to the membrane. The invention includes structure and a method for ensuring that the membrane and the flat end of the electrode are exactly parallel and a fixed predetermined distance from each other.

An optical fiber interferometer was developed for the detection of ultrasonic waves in solids. The optical paths in both the signal and reference arms of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer are through the cores of similar lengths of single mode fiber mode stripped at both input and output. Instantaneous translation of the pattern is proportional to the localized strain produced by ultrasonic bulk waves generated in the disc and integrated along the fiber path. By spatially filtering the moving fringe pattern and synchronously demodulating the filtered optical intensity distirbution, a signal proportional to the integrated strain is obtained.

Calibrated masurements of acoustic surface wave pulses by wide bandwidth differential interferometry are described. By interrogating the interference pattern formed by superimposing two optical beams reflected from the surface at slightly separated points, an output signal proportional to instantaneous surface particle displacement is obtained. Response to ideal propagating step function displacements is analyzed and measurements of gated pulses are described.

The strain sensitivity of an optical fiber interferometer developed for the detection of pulsed ultrasonic waves in solids was calibrated. Light from the output ends of both fibers was superimposed to form an interference fringe pattern that was interrogated in the far field to give a signal proportional to the differential optical fiber path length. Strain sensitivity is determined by comparing data obtained by clamping and bending the bar at different lengths to simple cantilever beam theory. A minimum theoretical detectable strain of less than 10 to the minus 10th power is indicated.

An improved formula for continuous-wave ultrasonic phase velocity measurements using contact transducers is derived from the transmission line theory. The effect of transducer-sample coupling bonds is considered for measurements of solid samples even though it is often neglected because of the difficulty of accurately determining the bond thickness. Computer models show that the present formula is more accurate than previous expressions. Laboratory measurements using contacting transducers with the present formula are compared to measurements using noncontacting (hence effectively correction-free) capacitive transducers. The results of the experiments verify the validity and accuracy of the new formula.

Technique is used for evaluation and characterization of materials, fluids, and biological tissue. Method eliminates problem of electrical drive pulse shape by slaving tracking generator to local oscillator of spectrum analyzer. Logic/timing generator is used to control pulse transmission and receiving sequence, pulse width, and pulse repetition rate.

The solution of the nonlinear differential equation which describes an initially sinusoidal finite-amplitude elastic wave propagating in a solid contains a static-displacement term in addition to the harmonic terms. The static-displacement amplitude is theoretically predicted to be proportional to the product of the squares of the driving-wave amplitude and the driving-wave frequency. The first experimental verification of the elastic-wave static displacement in a solid (the 111 direction of single-crystal germanium) is reported, and agreement is found with the theoretical predictions.

Capacitive electrostatic transducer (ESAT) measures absolute displacement amplitudes of ultrasonic waves in liquids, and may be used as calibrator for other transducers or as probe for nondestructive study and characterization of materials. ESAT consists of thin conductive membrane stretched over metallic housing. Ultrasonic waves incident on membrane cause it to vibrate and generate signal proportional to wave amplitude. Entire assembly is sealed for immersion in liquid.

A new method of ultrasonic frequency analysis is introduced which employs frequency-tracked gated RF drive pulses rather than shock-excited broadband spikes to generate the ultrasonic waveform. The new technique, a variation of the sampled-continuous wave technique, eliminates problems associated with finite pulse widths of conventional methods. It is shown to yield correct ultrasonic wave velocity measurements of the sample irrespective of receiver gate width or position provided any portions of two successive echoes are gated simultaneously into the spectrum analyzer. The experimental observations are substantiated by a theoretical model based on the time-frequency domain formulation of ultrasonic frequency analysis.

Anharmonic effects in solids are often described in terms of generalized Grueneisen parameters which measure the strain dependence of the lattice vibrational frequencies. The relationship between these parameters and the solid nonlinearity parameters measured directly in ultrasonic harmonic generation experiments is derived using an approach valid for normal-mode elastic wave propagation in any crystalline direction. The resulting generalized Grueneisen parameters are purely isentropic in contrast to the Brugger-Grueneisen parameters which are of a mixed thermodynamic state. Experimental data comparing the isentropic generalized Grueneisen parameters and the Brugger-Grueneisen parameters are presented.

Both continuous wave and Fourier transformed pulse ultrasonic spectroscopy are being applied to material and flow characterization. Ideal samples and flaws (flat, parallel, and homogeneous) and ideal ultrasonic apparatus (producing delta function stress waves) provide acoustic spectra which can be partially inverted. However, in the presence of material inhomogeneity, lack of sample flatness or parallelism, or finite risetime pulses, the spectra become quite complex and produce phase cancellations at the transducer as well as pulse shape spectral artifacts. In this paper, we examine the nature of these artifacts for both simple and practical samples. Sample spectra are contrasted for several different transducer/electronic systems. Spectra obtained with a phase insensitive acousto-electric transducer (AET) combined with a frequency tracked tone-burst spectroscopy (TBS) method are presented. Analysis of the test configuration is shown to produce spectra consistent with that obtained with the AET-TBS combination.

A broadband capacitive electrostatic acoustic transducer (ESAT) has been developed for use in a liquid environment at megahertz frequencies. The ESAT basically consists of a thin conductive membrane stretched over a metallic housing. The membrane functions as the ground plate of a parallel plate capacitor, the other plate being a dc biased electrode recessed approximately 10 microns from the electrically grounded membrane. An ultrasonic wave incident on the membrane varies the membrane-electrode gap spacing and generates an electrical signal proportional to the wave amplitude. The entire assembly is sealed for immersion in a liquid environment. Calibration of the ESAT with incident ultrasonic waves of constant displacement amplitude from 1 to 15 MHz reveals a decrease in signal response with increasing frequency independent of membrane tension. The use of the ESAT as a broadband ultrasonic transducer in liquids with a predictable frequency response is promising.

Most ultrasonic measurements of materials involve the generation of an acoustic wave and the propagation of that wave from a transducer through a coupling medium to a specimen under test. After interacting with the specimen, the wave propagates through the coupling medium to a receiving transducer and is converted to an electrical signal. The information presented to the observer by the electrical signal depends on each element of the system. In this paper, the role that the receiving transducer plays in ultrasonic measurements is examined. The phase-sensitive nature of conventional receiving transducers has, for the most part, been neglected in nondestructive evaluations. This is shown to lead to significant data misinterpretation. A new acoustoelectric transducer (AET) has been developed which is phase insensitive. Comparative data obtained with both conventional and AET transducers are presented and discussed. The AET is shown to produce more accurate measurements for the cases investigated.

The theory of a phase insensitive receiver based on acousto-electric effect is presented along with experimental characteristics of a CdS acousto-electric converter (AEC). Since the AEC is nearly phase insensitive, it is ideal for measurements in inhomogeneous materials and/or materials with irregular flatness and parallelism. Through transmission ultrasonic C-scan data of phantom flaws demonstrates a significant improvement in flaw characterization with an AEC over that of a conventional transducer. In addition, measurements with conventional transducers in anisotropically stressed metal samples are shown to lead to grossly inaccurate results due to phase sensitivity. Various other measurements are presented with data contrasting conventional transducers with an AEC in specific NDE applications.
