Abstract

Resumo: O tema da agroecologia enquanto projeto social para a agricultura contemporânea visa o respeito ao meio ambiente tende, a contribuir para a discussao das questoes agrarias associadas as solucoes inovadoras de problemas cruciais ligados ao emprego, a soberania alimentar, a preservacao dos agroecosistemas. A agroecologia e fruto de interacoes e dialogos intensos entre atores sociais que desempenham papel chave para a sua legitimidade social e politica, sendo tambem fruto de experiencias praticas de agricultura ecologica. Tais caracteristicas impulsionaram o seu processo de institucionalizacao e a construcao de politicas publicas. Entretanto, o avanco da agroecologia e marcado por dificuldades que comprometem a disseminacao ampla desta importante pratica social. Tendo em vista esta realidade o presente artigo tem como objetivo descrever a emergencia e o funcionamento da agroecologia em redes socio tecnicas considerada como inovacao social. Concluimos que a dinâmica de funcionamento das redes de agroecologia se baseiam na abertura a participacao da sociedade civil, a criacao de interfaces com um conjunto de instituicoes da sociedade atraves de acoes coletivas e projetos de desenvolvimento rural, mas o exito destas acoes depende do suporte das politicas publicas.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the intragestational role of ghrelin in offspring development and reproductive programming in a mouse model of ghrelin imbalance during pregnancy. Female mice were injected with ghrelin (supraphysiological levels: 4 nmol/animal/day), antagonist (endogenous ghrelin inhibition with (D-Lys3)GHRP-6, 6 nmol/animal/day) or vehicle (control = normal ghrelin levels) throughout the pregnancy. Parameters evaluated in litters were growth, physical, neurobiological and sexual development and, at adulthood, reproductive function. Litter size and initial weight did not vary between treatments. Male pups from dams treated with ghrelin showed higher body weight increase until adulthood (31.7 ± 0.8 vs control = 29.7 ± 0.7, n = 11-14 litters/treatment; P < 0.05). Postnatal physical and neurobiological development was not modified by treatments. The antagonist accelerated male puberty onset, evidenced as earlier testis descent and increased relative testicular weight (antagonist = 0.5 ± 0.0% vs ghrelin = 0.4 ± 0.0% and control = 0.4 ± 0.0%, n = 5-10 litters/treatment; P < 0.05). At adulthood, these males exhibited lower relative testicular weight and reduced sperm motility (63.9 ± 3.6% vs control = 70.9 ± 3.3 and ghrelin = 75.6 ± 3.0, n = 13-15 animals; P < 0.05), without changes in plasma testosterone or fertility. Female pups intragestationally exposed to the antagonist showed earlier vaginal opening (statistically significant only at Day 25) and higher ovarian volume (antagonist = 1085.7 ± 64.0 mm³ vs ghrelin = 663.3 ± 102.8 mm³ and control = 512.3 ± 116.4 mm³; n = 4-6 animals/treatment; P < 0.05), indicating earlier sexual maturation. At adulthood, these females and those exposed to ghrelin showed a tendency to higher percentages of embryo loss and/or foetal atrophy. In conclusion, ghrelin participates in reproductive foetal programming: alterations in ghrelin activity during pregnancy modified body weight increase and anticipated puberty onset, exerting (or tending to) negative effects on adult reproductive function. Abstract

The palaeontological yield of the 1138.54 metre-long AND-2A sedimentary rock core provides unique documentation of Neogene environments in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica. Especially important is the biological legacy of the climatically crucial ‘mild’ middle Miocene phase. Diatom-bearing units provide key information for stratigraphic intervals never previously recovered from locations proximal to the Antarctic continent and constrain the age model for the AND-2A core. Benthic calcareous (and agglutinated) foraminifera were present at many levels; remarkable is the occurrence of planktonic taxa only seldom found in the Neogene nearshore record of the Ross Sea region. The sporadic occurrence of calcareous dinoflagellate remains (thoracosphaerids) is consistent with warmer-than-present seawater during the Miocene. Marine palynomorphs are almost ubiquitous, although their abundance and diversity are variable. Pollen and spores from the middle Miocene section suggest a mossy tundra vegetation and represent the first stratigraphically-constrained record of terrestrial vegetation in Victoria Land during this time. Fragments of lignin-rich organic matter (huminite-vitrinite and inertinite groups) are particularly predominant during the Miocene climatic optimum, and continue into the Pliocene. Macrofossils are reasonably common throughout the core. Polychaete worm tubes were almost ubiquitous. Especially remarkable is the bivalve record (mainly pectinids), with 4-5 different taxa pointing out a mild climatic situation in the Miocene nearshore.

Abstract

Infection of cultured HeLa epithelial cells with enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) or enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) O157:H7 results in accumulation of cortactin under the adherent bacteria. Tyrosine phosphorylation of cortactin is not induced following HeLa cell infection with EHEC or EPEC, contrary to what has been reported to occur with Shigella flexneri.

Diphyllobothrium latum foi confirmado pelo exame dos proglotes grávidos e típicos ovos operculados nas fezes. O paciente havia comido crustáceos e peixes. É o relato do primeiro brasileiro infectado.

Abstract

Thirty-six castrated male pigs were used to determine the influence of thermal environment and reduction of consumption on performance and carcass composition. Animals were housed in two climate chambers. In one, animals were in thermal comfort (TN) (22 °C), and in the other, pigs were under heat stress (HS) (34 °C). Animals were distributed in a randomized block design, making three treatments (TN, HS and animals in thermal comfort with food consumption paired with that observed in HS (PFTN)), with six replicates and two animals per experimental unit. Data were obtained on performance and carcass composition. The weight gains of HS and PFTN animals were reduced by 40.5% and 34.7%, respectively, reflecting a reduction of 13.2% in the final weight of PFTN animals. Triiodothyronine concentration was not affected by heat, but there was an increase in lymphocyte numbers in PFTN animals. The HS and PFTN animals showed lower hot carcass weight. However, there were no effects on hot carcass yield and relative weights of heart, lung and spleen. Heat stress compromised performance. Abstract

The present work provides a combined structural and paleothermal (fluid inclusions, illite content in mixed layers illite–smectite, Kubler index and vitrinite reflectance) investigation of the Alpine cleavage domain affecting the western South Pyrenean Zone (Central Pyrenees). Integration of structural and paleothermal data allows us (i) to determine the position of the cleavage front in the sedimentary sequence and (ii) to define mechanisms and temperature conditions for cleavage development. Cleavage in the eastern part of the study area is approximately limited to the forelimb of the Gavarnie hanging wall anticline, but to the West it extends progressively southwards, affecting younger turbiditic units. At regional scale, the cleavage front is oblique to the strike of bedding and the overall trend of macrostructures. Pressure-solution is the main mechanism for cleavage development, and a strong thermal control on the position of the cleavage front is inferred. The transition between sedimentary and tectonic, compressional fabric is marked by vitrinite reflectance values of 1.12–1.14%, Kubler index values between 0.71 and 0.74°Δ2θ and the transition between R1 and R3 mixed layers illite–smectite. A lower thermal boundary of 140–160 °C is suggested for incipient cleavage development in the shaly beds of the turbiditic sequence, as well as an upper boundary constrained by a maximum measured value of about 215 °C.
