Abstract

In this paper we study the possibility to account for preferential diffusion effects in lean turbulent premixed flames in numerical predictions with reduced chemistry. We studied the situation when hydrogen is added to methane at levels of 20% and 40% by volume in the fuel, at lean combustion (φ= 0.7) with air. The base case of pure methane was used as a reference. In this case preferential diffusion effects are negligible. First the sensitivity of the mass burning rate to flame stretch was investigated, in one dimensional computations with detailed chemistry, to set reference values. Then the framework of the Flamelet Generated Manifolds (FGM) was used to construct an adequate chemical method to take preferential diffusion into account, without the need for using detailed chemistry. To that end a generalization of the method was presented in which five controlling variables are required. For this system, proper transport equations and effective Lewis numbers where derived. In practice not all five variables are necessary to include and as a first step we limited the amount in the numerical tests in this study to two controlling variables. The method was then tested in configurations in which there was an interaction of coherent vortices and turbulence with flames. It was demonstrated that a minimum of two controlling variables is needed to account for the changed mass burning rate as function of stretch and curvature. It was shown that one-dimensional FGM as well as one-step Arrhenius kinetics can not describe this relation. © 2010 The Author(s).

Abstract

The influence of turbulent Reynolds number (Ret) on the statistical behavior and modeling of turbulent scalar flux (TSF) has been analyzed using a direct numerical simulation database of freely propagating turbulent premixed flames. A range of different values of Retis considered in which the Damköhler and Karlovitz numbers are modified independent of each other to bring about the variation of Ret. It has been found that the qualitative behavior of the various terms of the TSF transport equation does not change by the variation of Ret, but their relative contributions to the transport of TSF are affected to some extent. The effects of Reton the modeling of the TSF using both algebraic and transport equation-based closures are addressed in detail. It is demonstrated that model parameters for an existing algebraic model, and the models for turbulent transport, pressure gradient and the reaction rate terms in the TSF transport equation, all exhibit Retdependence for small values of Retbut all assume asymptotic values for Ret ≥ 50. By contrast, the model parameters for the combined molecular diffusion term are found to be insensitive to the variation of turbulent Ret. Existing models for algebraic and transport equation-based closures of TSF have been modified to account for the observed Retdependence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: Eight equations of state (EOS) have been evaluated for the simulation of compressible liquid water properties, based on empirical correlations, the principle of corresponding states and thermodynamic relations. The IAPWS-IF97 EOS for water was employed as the reference case. These EOSs were coupled to a modified AUSM+-up convective flux solver to determine flow profiles for three test cases of differing flow conditions. The impact of the non-viscous interaction term discretisation scheme, interfacial pressure method and selection of low-Mach number diffusion were also compared. It was shown that a consistent discretisation scheme using the AUSM+-up solver for both the convective flux and the non-viscous interfacial term demonstrated both robustness and accuracy whilst facilitating a computationally cheaper solution than discretisation of the interfacial term independently by a central scheme. The simple empirical correlations gave excellent results in comparison to the reference IAPWS-IF97 EOS and were recommended for developmental work involving water as a cheaper and more accurate EOS than the more commonly used stiffened-gas model. The correlations based on the principles of corresponding-states and the modified Peng–Robinson cubic EOS also demonstrated a high degree of accuracy, which is promising for future work with generic fluids. Further work will encompass extension of the solver to multiple dimensions and to account for other source terms such as surface tension, along with the incorporation of phase changes. 44. Strained laminar flamelet calculations of premixed turbulent combustion in a closed vessel

Abstract

A new turbulent burning rate model for premixed combustion is described. The model assumes that all chemical reaction takes place in thin laminar flamelets which are subjected to strain by the turbulent flow field. The effects of a distribution of strain and possible flamelet extinction on the turbulent burning rate are modelled analytically. The burning rate expression is implemented in an existing turbulent combustion code describing transient combustion in closed vessels, via a development of the Bray-Moss-Libby model, and comparison are made with previous results obtained using a conventional eddy-break-up rate expression.

Abstract

Abstract: The effects of tangential strain rate and curvature on the surface density function (SDF) and on source terms within the SDF transport equation are studied for lean methane–air and hydrogen–air flames using two-dimensional direct numerical simulations with detailed chemistry. A positive correlation is observed between the SDF and the tangential strain rate, and this is explained in terms of the interaction between the local tangential strain rate and the dilatation rate due to heat release. Curvature is also seen to affect the SDF through the curvature response of both tangential strain rate and dilatation rate on a given flame isosurface. Strain rate and curvature are found to have an appreciable effect on several terms of the SDF transport equation. The SDF straining term in both methane and hydrogen flames is correlated positively with tangential strain rate, as expected, and is also correlated negatively with curvature. For methane flames, the SDF propagation term is found to correlate negatively with flame curvature toward the reactant side of the flame and positively toward the product side. By contrast, for hydrogen flames the SDF propagation term is negatively correlated with curvature throughout the flame brush. The variation of the SDF curvature term with local flame curvature for both methane and hydrogen flames is found to be nonlinear due to the additional stretch induced by the tangential diffusion component of the displacement speed. Physical explanations are provided for all of these effects, and the modeling implications are considered in detail. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
