In contrast to traditional X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), hard X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) can provide information from deeper within a sample while maintaining chemical resolution. However, working with higher energy X‐rays introduces a series of new or different issues ranging from energy calibration to factors associated with quantitative analysis. As part of the efforts to identify and increase community awareness about these issues, a workshop was held to review HAXPES metrology challenges with the perspective of converting it into a quantitative technique. A summary is hereby given of this workshop, which was entitled “What New Challenges Come with the Capabilities of HAXPES?” It was held in Portland, OR, USA, on November 7, 2023, and was primarily sponsored by the ASTM E42 Committee and the Applied Surface Science Division of the American Vacuum Society. This report contains summaries of the presentations and discussions at this workshop regarding the current open problems in HAXPES metrology. There were 20 participants at the workshop. Based on ethnographic research in Santa Cruz Mixtepec, Mexico, this article investigates a local debate about the identity of a historic statue of a saint. It shows that historical and object biography approaches cannot fully account for the different ways that people draw on material evidence, religious understandings, and their own perceptions of the past when engaging with such meaningful objects. To more fully account for such processes, I develop the concept of ‘material historicity,’ which provides a framework that connects theories of materiality and historical consciousness. This framework will allow scholars to understand how objects and their material qualities provoke and enable creative and interpretive engagements with the past, and how these engagements interact with one another in the present. The case of the Mixtepec Saint shows that in addition to these analytical possibilities, attention to material historicity can also offer a politics that challenges the authority of secular, historicist interpretations of the past by allowing multiple perspectives to be considered on equal footing. Within the printed and online newspaper media in the UK, notions of 'decolonisation' referring to various contexts, such as historical, relating to museums and institutions, cultural decolonisation and in relation to modern independence discussions, can be traced. In this article, we have applied topic modelling and natural language processing methods to carry out a classification of, and sentiment analysis on, newspaper headlines and texts from leading British newspapers covering decolonisation over the past decade. The results show an abrupt change in the meaning of decolonisation starting in the middle of the 2010s with an increased focus on cultural and institutional matters, particularly in right-leaning media. Surprisingly, the editorial slant of broadsheets seemingly only had at best moderate effects on tone, while headlines in right-wing tabloids were significantly more negative. Articles covering cultural aspects of decolonisation were substantially more negative than those applying a more traditional, territorial definition of decolonisation. Given the influence of newspaper media on public and private opinions, we discuss the heritage implications of these findings and suggest avenues for further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

E-commerce growth as experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic was only expected to occur by 2025–2030. Online shopping increased in intensity and diversity. At the same time, retailers diversified their operations and opened online channels, also in sectors that previously showed reluctance to make this shift. These evolutions resulted in an expansion of household freight in terms of volume, geography, and organisation. Hence, half a decade of innovation in the e-commerce sector was needed in the span of two years. This manuscript summarises the repercussions for household freight since the pandemic's start. Given that interactions between consumers, retailers, and logistics service providers drive the e-commerce system, this manuscript combines these different literatures into a holistic framework, going beyond traditional siloed research on last-mile logistics, retail strategies, or online shopping behaviour. We found that logistics has come to the forefront: logistics service providers now need to provide tailored services and come in direct contact with consumers. As a result, we need (i) to gain insights into the new geography and dynamics of household's freight origins and destinations; (ii) use this to re-examine existing relationships between consumer, retailer, and logistics service provider, and; (iii) assess the impact of more demanding consumers on the sustainability of the overall system. In this paper, we prove a contact non-squeezing result for a class of embeddings between starshaped domains in the contactization of the symplectization of the unit cotangent bundle of certain manifolds. The class of embeddings includes embeddings which are not isotopic to the identity. This yields a new proof that there is no positive loop of contactomorphisms in the unit cotangent bundles under consideration. Polymer powder bed fusion (PBF) is becoming increasingly popular for the fabrication of lightweight, high-performance parts, particularly for medical and aerospace applications. This study investigates the effect of powder re-use and material aging on the coalescence behaviour, melt flowability, and isothermal crystallisation kinetics of polyamide-12 (PA-12) powder. With increased powder re-use, a progressive reduction in melt flowability and material coalescence is observed; at 200 °C, the particle consolidation time increases from 15 s in virgin powder to 180 s in powder recovered from build 6. The observed changes in the behaviour of PA-12 were attributed to polycondensation and cross-linking; these aging phenomena also create structural defects, which hinder the rate and extent of primary crystallisation. At an isothermal crystallisation temperature of 165 °C, the crystallisation half-time increased from 12.78 min in virgin powder to 23.95 min in powder re-used across six build cycles. As a result, the commonly used Avrami model was found to be unsuitable for modelling the crystallisation behaviour of aged PA-12 powder, with the co-efficient of determination (R2) reducing from >0.995 for virgin powder to as low as 0.795 for re-used powder. On the other hand, an alternative method, the Hay model, is able to successfully track full phase transformation within re-used powder (R2 > 0.99). These results highlight the importance of selecting the most appropriate model for analysing the crystallisation kinetics of PA-12 powder re-used across multiple build cycles. Objective: To evaluate the cost‐effectiveness of retaining one or more compromised first permanent molars (cFPMs) affected by dental caries or enamel hypomineralization, compared to timely extraction, in children aged 8 years. Methods: A Markov model was developed to simulate the lifetime of a cFPM. Two management strategies were compared: extraction facilitating spontaneous space closure or maintenance of teeth with restorations. Ten health states were utilized to capture long‐term outcomes including various tooth restorations, prostheses or a retained gap at the cFPM site. Outcomes were expressed as Quality Adjusted Tooth‐Years (QATYs). The model was informed by survey data on patient preferences for treatment outcomes and UK data on costs. Discounted costs and QATYs were calculated over 62 years. Results: Regardless of the number of cFPMs, retaining cFPMs was more effective than early removal, generating an additional 2.3 QATYs per cFPM. Early removal of one or two cFPM under general anaesthetic (GA) was more expensive than retention and hence never cost‐effective. Retaining a cFPM was more expensive than early removal under local anaesthesia or where four cFPMs were extracted under GA. In these cases, retaining cFPMs was cost‐effective if a QATY was valued at £100 or £35, respectively. Results were robust to sensitivity analysis. Conclusion: Preserving a cFPM was more cost‐effective than the early loss of one, or two cFPMs under GA. Preservation of four cFPMs was cost‐effective if sufficient value was placed on a QATY. The persistent exposure of coral assemblages to more variable abiotic regimes is assumed to augment their resilience to future climatic variability. Yet, while the determinants of coral population resilience across species remain unknown, we are unable to predict the winners and losers across reef ecosystems exposed to increasingly variable conditions. Using annual surveys of 3171 coral individuals across Australia and Japan (2016–2019), we explore spatial variation across the short‐ and long‐term dynamics of competitive, stress‐tolerant, and weedy assemblages to evaluate how abiotic variability mediates the structural composition of coral assemblages. We illustrate how, by promoting short‐term potential over long‐term performance, coral assemblages can reduce their vulnerability to stochastic environments. However, compared to stress‐tolerant, and weedy assemblages, competitive coral taxa display a reduced capacity for elevating their short‐term potential. Accordingly, future climatic shifts threaten the structural complexity of coral assemblages in variable environments, emulating the degradation expected across global tropical reefs. Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a genetic disease characterized by defects in motile cilia, which play an important role in several organ systems. Lung disease is a hallmark of PCD, given the essential role of cilia in airway surface defense. Diagnosis of PCD is complicated due to its reliance on complex tests that are not utilized by every clinic and also its phenotypic overlap with several other respiratory diseases. Nonetheless, PCD is increasingly being recognized as more common than once thought. The disease is genetically complex, with several genes reported to be associated with PCD. There is no cure for PCD, but gene therapy remains a promising therapeutic strategy. In this review, we provide an overview of the clinical symptoms, diagnosis, genetics, and current treatment regimens for PCD. We also describe PCD model systems and discuss the therapeutic potential of different gene therapeutics for targeting the intended cellular target, the ciliated cells of the airway. Escalating climatic and anthropogenic pressures expose ecosystems worldwide to increasingly stochastic environments. Yet, our ability to forecast the responses of natural populations to this increased environmental stochasticity is impeded by a limited understanding of how exposure to stochastic environments shapes demographic resilience. Here, we test the association between local environmental stochasticity and the resilience attributes (e.g. resistance, recovery) of 2242 natural populations across 369 animal and plant species. Contrary to the assumption that past exposure to frequent environmental shifts confers a greater ability to cope with current and future global change, we illustrate how recent environmental stochasticity regimes from the past 50 years do not predict the inherent resistance or recovery potential of natural populations. Instead, demographic resilience is strongly predicted by the phylogenetic relatedness among species, with survival and developmental investments shaping their responses to environmental stochasticity. Accordingly, our findings suggest that demographic resilience is a consequence of evolutionary processes and/or deep‐time environmental regimes, rather than recent‐past experiences. While studying sociology can be empowering and transformative, fostering criticality and reflexivity, this capacity is not being sufficiently harnessed in school/college-based delivery in England. A large survey of sociology teachers revealed that they are required to teach outdated and sometimes discredited studies, which can reinforce rather than challenge stereotypes held by the privileged and which can be disempowering for those students who cannot recognise their own experiences. This article provides a unique insight into the ways that school/college curricula reinforce inequality and contributes to important debates within the sociology of education. Specifically, the article argues that the work being undertaken to decolonise the curriculum in universities, through challenging structural and discursive operations of power, should also inform the revision of school/college specifications. Recognition of group members is an important adaptation in social organisms because it allows help to be directed toward kin or individuals that are likely to reciprocate, and harm to be directed toward members of competing groups. Evidence in a wide range of animals shows that responses to outgroups vary with context, suggesting that cues to group membership also depend on the social or environmental context. In termites, intergroup encounters are frequent and their outcomes highly variable, ranging from destruction of a colony to colony fusion. As well as genetic factors, nestmate recognition in social insects commonly relies on cues that are mediated by environmental factors such as food source. However, single‐piece nesting termite colonies share nesting material and food source with rival colonies (their wood substrate serves as both). In principle, the shared environment of single‐piece nesting termite colonies could constrain their ability to identify non‐nestmates, contributing to some of the variation seen in encounters, but this has not been investigated. In this study, we raised incipient colonies of a single‐piece nesting termite, Zootermopsis angusticollis, on two different wood types and conducted behavioral assays to test whether nestmate discrimination can be constrained by common environmental conditions. We found that non‐nestmates elicited higher rates of identity checking and defense behavior compared to nestmates, but there was no effect of wood type on the strength of behavioral responses to non‐nestmates. We also found that one key cooperative behavior (allogrooming) was performed equally toward both nestmates and non‐nestmates. These findings offer no support for the hypothesis that common wood type constrains the nestmate recognition system of single piece nesting termites. We suggest that where groups encounter each other frequently in a common environment, selection will favor discrimination based on genetic and/or higher resolution environmentally mediated cues. Background and purpose -- Physeal fractures represent 15-20% of all pediatric fractures and may lead to premature physeal closure (PPC). The aim of our study was to determine the incidence rates of physeal fractures in the lower limb and the proportion of PPC that lead to limb length discrepancy (LLD), and/or angular deformity (AD). Patients and methods -- This retrospective study included 236 consecutive children with physeal fracture in the tibia, distal femur, or distal fibula. We estimated incidence rates and reviewed medical records and radiographs to obtain information regarding the development of PPC leading to LLD and AD. Of the 236 children, 100 had planned growth control or were referred for growth control due to symptoms of PPC. Results -- The total incidence rate was 35 (95% CI 30-39) per 100,000 person-years, with 1.2 (CI 0.5-23) for distal femur, 5.7 (CI 3.1-7.8) for proximal tibia, 14 (CI 11-17) for distal tibia, and 14 (CI 11-17) for distal fibula. The overall prevalence of PPC was 9.7% (CI 6.3-14), while the prevalence was 38% (CI 8.5-76) for distal femur, 15% (CI 5.9-31) for proximal tibia, 14% (CI 7.4-22) for distal tibia, and 1.1% (CI 0.3--59) for distal fibula. We found a significant higher hazard of PPC in fractures with ≥ 3 mm displacement (hazard ratio: 12, CI 1.5-97). Conclusion -- 10% of children with physeal fractures developed PPC that led to LLD or AD. The highest hazard ratio was in children who had an initial fracture displacement. A student's experience of assessment has an important determining effect on the way in which they approach learning. This case study examines students' experience of assessment and feedback in a biomedicine degree programme. A mixed-method approach combined with an assessment audit and an analysis of formative assessment use provided a holistic view of students' experience of assessment and feedback across years 1–3 of the degree. The Assessment Experience Questionnaire was utilised together with data from open-ended narrative responses to give insight into students' assessment and feedback experiences. Students (N = 960) reported diverse views about their experiences of assessment across the three years. Third-year students rated their assessment experience significantly lower than did second-year students but not as low as did first-year students. Analysis revealed significant differences in six of eight subdimensions between year 1 and year 3. The trend was downwards, with third-year students reporting lower agreement for the categories of 'Quantity of effort', 'Coverage of syllabus', 'Use of feedback', 'Appropriate assessment', 'Clear goals and standards' and 'Overall satisfaction with the course'. An assessment audit revealed a high assessment load and high dependence on exams. Frequent assessment schedules were seen as positive and formative assessments were utilised by most students. A major issue was a lack of clarity concerning goals and standards for assessments. To enable an improvement in the student experience of assessment and feedback, a dialogue about assessment tasks involving good clear communication between teachers, policy makers and students is needed. Predicting the viability of species exposed to increasing climatic stress requires an appreciation for the mechanisms underpinning the success or failure of marginal populations. Rather than traditional metrics of long‐term population performance, here we illustrate that short‐term (i.e. transient) demographic characteristics, including measures of resistance, recovery and compensation, are fundamental in the poleward range expansion of hard corals, facilitating the establishment of coral populations at higher latitudes. Through the annual census of subtropical and temperate Acropora spp. colonies in Japan between 2017 and 2019, we show how enhanced transient amplification (i.e. short‐term increases in population growth following disturbance) supports the persistence of coral assemblages within more variable high‐latitude environments. The transient dynamics of both the subtropical and temperate assemblages were strongly influenced by their corresponding recruitment patterns. However, we demonstrate that variation in colony survival and fragmentation patterns between the two assemblages determines their relative capacities for transient amplification. This latitudinal variation in the transient dynamics of Acropora spp. assemblages emphasizes that coral populations can possess the demographic plasticity necessary for exploiting more variable, marginal conditions. The investigation of the graph G p associated with the finite p -groups of maximal class was initiated by Blackburn (1958) and became a deep and interesting research topic since then. Leedham-Green & McKay (1976–1984) introduced skeletons of G p , described their importance for the structural investigation of G p and exhibited their relation to algebraic number theory. Here we go one step further: we partition the skeletons into so-called Galois trees and study their general shape. In the special case p ⩾ 7 and p ≡ 5 mod 6 , we show that they have a significant impact on the periodic patterns of G p conjectured by Eick, Leedham-Green, Newman & O'Brien (2013). Powder bed fusion (PBF) is an additive manufacturing (AM) technique which offers efficient part-production, light-weighting, and the ability to create complex geometries. However, during a build cycle, multiple aging and degradation processes occur which may affect the reusability of the Polyamide 12 (PA-12) powder. Limited understanding of these phenomena can result in discarding re-usable powder unnecessarily, or the production of parts with insufficient properties, both of which lead to significant amounts of waste. This paper examines the thermal, chemical, and mechanical characteristics of PA-12 via an oven storage experiment that simulates multi jet fusion (MJF) conditions. Changes in the properties of PA-12 powder during oven storage showed two separate, time-dependent trends. Initially, differential scanning calorimetry showed a 4.2 °C increase in melting temperature (Tm) and a rise in crystallinity (Xc). This suggests that secondary crystallisation is occurring instead of, or in addition to, the more commonly reported further polycondensation process. However, with extended storage time, there were substantial reductions in Tm and Xc, whilst an 11.6 °C decrease in crystallisation temperature was observed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, a technique rarely used in PBF literature, shows an increased presence of imide bonds—a key marker of thermo-oxidative degradation. Discolouration of samples, an 81% reduction in strength and severe material embrittlement provided further evidence that thermo-oxidative degradation becomes the dominant process following extended storage times beyond 100 h. An additional pre-drying experiment showed how moisture present within PA-12 can also accelerate degradation via hydrolysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Return to running (RTR) after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is a crucial milestone. However, how and when to start a running program are uncertain. To explore the feasibility of a structured program to reintroduce running after ACLR and evaluate the predictive value of potential predictors of short-term success. Longitudinal cohort study. Local research center and participants' homes. Thirty-five participants were recruited after ACLR. Program with a progression algorithm to reintroduce running (10 running sessions in 14 days). The criterion for short-term success was no exacerbation of symptoms. Potential predictors were (1) the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective knee form score, (2) ACL Return to Sport after Injury questionnaire score, (3) quadriceps and hamstrings strength, (4) step-down endurance test, and (5) modified Star Excursion Balance test. Descriptive statistics were performed to study the feasibility of the RTR program, and Poisson regression analysis was used to evaluate predictors of success. Of the 34 participants, 33 completed the RTR program. Sixteen participants experienced some temporary exacerbation of symptoms, but only 1 had to stop the program. The initial IKDC score was the only significant predictor of a successful RTR, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 80.4%. An IKDC cut-off of 63.7/100 differentiated responders and nonresponders with the highest sensitivity and specificity (77.8% and 75.0%, respectively). A participant with an IKDC score above this threshold had a 3-fold greater chance of success. Our results confirm the feasibility of our RTR program and progression algorithm after ACLR. Clinicians should use an IKDC score of >64 as a criterion to reintroduce running after ACLR to increase the likelihood of short-term success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A method for the rapid determination of theoretical relative sensitivity factors (RSFs) for hard X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) instruments of any type and photon energy has been developed. We develop empirical functions to describe discrete theoretically calculated values for photoemission cross sections and asymmetry parameters across the photon energy range from 1.5 to 10 keV for all elements from lithium to californium. The formulae describing these parameters, in conjunction with similar practical estimates for inelastic mean free paths, allow the calculation of a full set of theoretical sensitivity factors for a given X‐ray photon energy, X‐ray polarisation and instrument geometry. We show that the anticipated errors on these RSFs are less than the typical errors generated by extracting X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) intensities from the spectra and thus enable adequate quantification for any XPS/HAXPES experiment up to 10 keV. ISO Technical Report 23173 describes methods by which electron spectroscopies, including X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and synchrotron techniques, can be employed to calculate the coating thicknesses and compositions of nanoparticles. The document has been developed to review and outline the current state‐of‐the‐art for such measurements. Such analyses of core–shell nanoparticles are common within the literature, however the methods employed are varied; the relative advantages and disadvantages of these methods, and the optimal usage of each may not be clear to the general analyst. ISO Technical Report 23173 aims to clarify the methods that are available, describe them in clear terms, exhibit examples of their use, and highlight potential issues users may face. The information provided should allow analysts of electron spectroscopy data to make clear choices regarding the appropriate analysis of electron spectroscopy data from coated nanoparticle systems and provide a basis for understanding and comparing results from different methods and systems. This Covid-19 pandemic brings uncertainty and may lead to mental problems. Yet, in this context, no study has examined the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty (IU) and either anxiety or depression during pandemic among Indonesians. This study investigated the pathway between IU, anxiety and depression serially mediated by cognitive appraisals (perceived severity, controllability, and knowledge) and emotional and behavioural responses to COVID-19. Online psychological measures were administered to 406 participants, including the IUS-12, the DASS-21, cognitive appraisal scales, and emotional and behavioural response scale. An indirect pathway was found between IU and depression, and the effect was serially mediated by perceived of severity and emotional and behavioural responses to COVID-19. Perceived knowledge and perceived controllability of COVID-19 did not significantly contribute to the model. A similar pathway was found for IU predicting anxiety. As conclusion, IU represents a risk factor for heightened emotional and behavioural difficulties that eventually, could lead to either anxiety or depression during COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Reliability of the MCKCUEST was good to excellent and clinically acceptable. • Weak correlation was found between the MCKCUEST power score and isometric strength. • The MCKCUEST enables to standardize the test to any adolescent population. Physical performance tests provide a more complete picture of the functional status of the athlete's upper extremity. The primary purpose was to evaluate the reliability of the Modified Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability Test (MCKCUEST) in adolescent volleyball and basketball players. The secondary objective was to evaluate the relationship between the MCKCUEST and shoulder rotation isometric strength in this population. Seventy-three healthy basketball (n = 39) and volleyball (n = 34) players participated to establish the reliability and correlations of the MCKCUEST. We used a two-session measurement design to evaluate the reliability of the MCKCUEST. Shoulder rotation isometric strength was performed to determine relationships with the MCKCUEST. The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC 2,1) for intra-session reliability of the MCKCUEST ranged from 0.86 to 0.89, and the between days test–retest reliability (ICC 3,1) was 0.93. The standard error of measurement (1 touch) and the minimal detectable change (3 touches) showed clinically acceptable absolute reliability values. A weak correlation was found between the MCKCUEST power score and shoulder rotation isometric strength (r values between 0.3 and 0.4). Results demonstrated good to excellent relative reliability and clinically acceptable absolute reliability values for the MCKCUEST on adolescent basketball and volleyball athletes. The article focuses on the evolution of menopause in female chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in the Ngogo community of Uganda. These chimpanzees, living in a relatively undisturbed population, show physiological signs of menopause and can survive long past the end of their reproductive years. This observation challenges previous theories about the evolution of menopause and its role in kin selection.

A technique called the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method is used for simulating laminar one-dimensional hydrogen-air flames with an aim to establish the feasibility of molecular-level simulations for combustion using the Quantum-Kinetic (QK) reaction model. In DSMC, simulation particles are employed which represent many molecules with similar properties. The DSMC method effectively solves the Boltzmann equation by decoupling the motion of molecules into two phases: a Move phase and a Collision phase. Chemistry is treated using the Quantum-Kinetic model in which the total energy exchange resulting from molecular collision determines the outcome of the chemical reactions. A major advantage of DSMC is that it avoids using continuum Arrhenius reaction rates or simplified gradient laws for the diffusivities of mass, momentum and heat. Instead, any such laws and their parameters emerge naturally from the DSMC results. Simulations of one-dimensional hydrogen-air flames using the DSMC method with a detailed chemical scheme show promising results for molecular-level simulations of combustion. An adjustment to the activation energy of a key reaction is made in order to achieve the correct flame speed. The species and temperature profiles from DSMC show reasonable agreement with those obtained from Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) using a conventional continuum approach. Likewise, the molecular diffusivity of hydrogen and oxygen also show reasonable agreement with the DNS results, although differences in the results still exist, especially for oxygen diffusivity. A scoping review aims to systematically explore and map the research available from a wide range of sources. The objective of this study was to produce a scoping review checklist to guide future scoping studies to enable rigorous review and critique of phenomena of interest. The methods used included a review of literature, expert consensus group meetings, a modified Delphi survey and, finally, verification against recent scoping study examples. Results showed that the checklist was able to identify key elements of scoping reviews. The 22-item Scoping Review Checklist (SRC), which includes two optional stakeholder consultation items, has been developed using rigorous recommended approaches. Over the past decade, social accountability for health has coalesced into a distinct field of research and practice. Whether explicitly stated or not, changed power relations are at the heart of what social accountability practitioners seek, particularly in the context of sexual and reproductive health. Yet, evaluations of social accountability programs frequently fail to assess important power dynamics. In this commentary, we argue that we must include an examination of power in research and evaluation of social accountability in sexual and reproductive health, and suggest ways to do this. The authors are part of a community of practice on measuring social accountability and health outcomes. We share key lessons from our efforts to conduct power sensitive research using different approaches and methods. First, participatory research and evaluation approaches create space for program participants to engage actively in evaluations by defining success. Participation is also one of the key elements of feminist evaluation, which centers power relations rooted in gender. Participatory approaches can strengthen 'traditional' health evaluation approaches by ensuring that the changes assessed are meaningful to communities. Fields from outside health offer approaches that help to describe and assess changes in power dynamics. For example, realist evaluation analyses the causal processes, or mechanisms, grounded in the interactions between social, political and other structures and human agency; programs try to influence these structures and/or human agency. Process tracing requires describing the mechanisms underlying change in power dymanics in a very detailed way, promoting insight into how changes in power relationships are related to the broader program. Finally, case aggregation and comparison entail the aggregation of data from multiple cases to refine theories about when and how programs work. Case aggregation can allow for nuanced attention to context while still producing lessons that are applicable to inform programming more broadly. We hope this brief discussion encourages other researchers and evaluators to share experiences of analysing power relations as part of evaluation of social accountability interventions for sexual and reproductive health so that together, we improve methodology in this crucial area. Subtropical coral assemblages are threatened by similar extreme thermal stress events to their tropical counterparts. Yet, the mid‐ and long‐term thermal stress responses of corals in subtropical environments remain largely unquantified, limiting our capacity to predict their future viability.The annual survival, growth and recruitment of 311 individual corals within the Solitary Islands Marine Park (Australia) was recorded over a 3‐year period (2016–2018), including the 2015/2016 thermal stress event. These data were used to parameterise integral projection models quantifying the effect of thermal stress within a subtropical coral assemblage. Stochastic simulations were also applied to evaluate the implications of recurrent thermal stress scenarios predicted by four different Representative Concentration Pathways.We report differential shifts in population growth rates (λ) among coral populations during both stress and non‐stress periods, confirming contrasting bleaching responses among taxa. However, even during non‐stress periods, the observed dynamics for all taxa were unable to maintain current community composition, highlighting the need for external recruitment sources to support the community structure.Across all coral taxa, projected stochastic growth rates (λs) were found to be lowest under higher emissions scenarios. Correspondingly, predicted increases in recurrent thermal stress regimes may accelerate the loss of coral coverage, species diversity and structural complexity within subtropical regions.We suggest that these trends are primarily due to the susceptibility of subtropical specialists and endemic species, such as Pocillopora aliciae, to thermal stress. Similarly, the viability of many tropical coral populations at higher latitudes is highly dependent on the persistence of up‐current tropical systems. Behavioral mechanisms for avoiding inbreeding are common in the natural world and are believed to have evolved as a response to the negative consequences of inbreeding. However, despite a fundamental role in fitness, we have a limited understanding of the cues that individuals use to assess inbreeding risk, as well as the extent to which individual inbreeding behavior is repeatable. We used piecewise structural equation modeling of 24 years of data to investigate the causes and consequences of within- versus extra-group paternity in banded mongooses. This cooperatively breeding mammal lives in tight-knit social groups that often contain closely related opposite-sex breeders, so inbreeding can be avoided through extra-group mating. We used molecular parentage assignments to show that, despite extra-group paternity resulting in outbred offspring, within-group inbreeding occurs frequently, with around 16% litters being moderately or highly inbred. Additionally, extra-group paternity appears to be plastic, with females mating outside of their social group according to individual proxies (age and immigration status) and societal proxies (group size and age) of within-group inbreeding risk but not in direct response to levels of within-group relatedness. While individual repeatability in extra-group paternity was relatively low, female cobreeders showed high repeatability, suggesting a strong constraint arising from the opportunities for extra-group mating. The use of extra-group paternity as an inbreeding avoidance strategy is, therefore, limited by high costs, opportunity constraints, and the limited reliability of proxies of inbreeding risk. This article discusses the Fast Food Shutdown, a strike on 4 October 2018 that involved Wetherspoon, McDonald's, TGI Fridays and UberEats workers in the United Kingdom. It compares the different strategies of the Bakers Food and Allied Workers' Union at Wetherspoon and Industrial Workers of the World at UberEats. The two case studies, drawing on the authors' ongoing ethnographic research, provide important examples of successful precarious worker organising. In particular, the argument focuses on the role of action in organising, as well as the relationship between the rank-and-file and the union. While these could point the way to the recomposition of the workers movement – both in greenfield sectors and within existing unions – there remain important questions about how these experiences can be generalised. Collective conflicts among humans are widespread, although often highly destructive. A classic explanation for the prevalence of such warfare in some human societies is leadership by selfserving individuals that reap the benefits of conflict while other members of society pay the costs. Here, we show that leadership of this kind can also explain the evolution of collective violence in certain animal societies. We first extend the classic hawk-dove model of the evolution of animal aggression to consider cases in which a subset of individuals within each group may initiate fights in which all group members become involved. We show that leadership of this kind, when combined with inequalities in the payoffs of fighting, can lead to the evolution of severe intergroup aggression, with negative consequences for population mean fitness. We test our model using long-term data from wild banded mongooses, a species characterized by frequent intergroup conflicts that have very different fitness consequences for male and female group members. The data show that aggressive encounters between groups are initiated by females, who gain fitness benefits from mating with extragroup males in the midst of battle, whereas the costs of fighting are borne chiefly by males. In line with the model predictions, the result is unusually severe levels of intergroup violence. This essay examines the tensions between participatory ethnographic research methods and newly emerging legal regimes of data protection and privacy. Drawing on the example of recent grant‐funded research in Mexico, the essay charts how the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation impedes the practices and ethos of participatory research in significant ways. In particular, new legal requirements about data collection, access and storage, and "the right to be forgotten," effectively preclude integrating community members into research planning or data collection. As countries around the world move toward more robust and comprehensive data protection and privacy laws, the issues raised in this essay are likely to become more pressing in many different research contexts in the future. This article focuses on the emergence of worker resistance at Deliveroo, a food delivery platform. By presenting the results of an eight-month workers' inquiry in Brighton it gives an initial account of work, self-organisation and resistance within a food delivery platform from the workers' point of view. The key focal points of this account are: the labour process and the use of technology therein; worker self-organisation via physically and digitally-mediated mass self-communication networks; and the use of those networks as a scaffolding for collective resistance utilising leverage tactics and strike action. These focal points are analysed in the light of class composition theory and the thought of Italian workerist Romano Alquati in particular. This article makes two contributions: first, it provides a first-hand account of the labour process at Deliveroo, and second, it provides an initial analysis of worker self-organisation and resistance within platform capitalism, and the new cycle of struggle that is resulting from it. Founded in 1947 by a Catholic priest, Acción Cultural Popular (ACPO) was a pioneer in radio education. Offering a radio station (Radio Sutatenza), study manuals, and a newspaper, ACPO provided basic education and encouraged campesinos to seek personal development and to "vivir mejor"--to live better. From 1947 to 1994, it attracted over four million subscribers and became a model in 13 Latin American countries. In this article I show how ACPO's approach to rural development and communication style evolved between 1960 and 1980. As a consequence of technological, economic, and cultural developments, Radio Sutatenza, a station with a more or less captive audience of illiterate peasants, changed as it was forced to respond to rural Colombians' shifting aspirations and competition from commercial radio. While the organization's founding principles remained constant throughout this period, its articulation of what it meant to "live better" changed over time, reflecting the struggles of a religious organization to remain relevant in a rapidly changing world. In some animal species, individuals regularly breed with relatives, including siblings and parents. Given the high fitness costs of inbreeding, evolutionary biologists have found it challenging to understand the persistence of these inbred societies in nature. One appealing but untested explanation is that early life care may create a benign environment that offsets inbreeding depression, allowing inbred societies to evolve. We test this possibility using 21 years of data from a wild cooperatively breeding mammal, the banded mongoose, a species where almost one in ten young result from close inbreeding. We show that care provided by parents and alloparents mitigates inbreeding depression for early survival. However, as adults, inbred individuals provide less care, reducing the amount of help available to the next generation. Our results suggest that inbred cooperative societies are rare in nature partly because the protective care that enables elevated levels of inbreeding can be reduced by inbreeding depression. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this systematic review with meta-analysis was to compare the effects of low load resistance combined with blood flow restriction (BFR) versus conventional quadriceps strengthening on knee symptoms and function as well as knee extensor strength and muscle thickness in adults with knee conditions. LITERATURE SURVEY: Guidelines based on the latest evidence highlight the importance of quadriceps strengthening to reduce pain and improve function in patients with knee conditions. Blood flow restriction is based on brief periods of vascular occlusion which cause muscle hypertrophy and increased strength. Before it can be recommended for individuals with knee conditions, quadriceps strengthening with low load resistance combined with BFR (LL-BFR) must show beneficial effects on clinical outcomes in addition to quadriceps strength and mass. METHODS: A systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to identify relevant studies through PubMed, PEDro, and ScienceDirect up to January 2019. The protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42019121306). Differences in pre- and post-intervention means and standard deviations were extracted to calculate the standardized mean difference for each intervention in each included study. SYNTHESIS: Eight studies were included. Limited evidence suggests that LL-BFR is more beneficial on quadriceps strength and thickness in patients with knee conditions than LL training alone or in addition to a rehabilitation program. Limited evidence indicates that LL-BFR training is equally effective in improving function and muscle thickness compared with a HL quadriceps strengthening program but elicits less knee pain, corresponding to additional benefits of 22 (95% confidence interval 1 to 43) mm on a 0–100 mm visual analogue scale. CONCLUSIONS: BFR could be a useful option for patients with knee conditions where conventional quadriceps strengthening program exacerbate knee symptoms. Background: Although much is known about the importance of anger management programmes, little has been written on the self‐reported differences in experience between people who feel they have been successful and those who feel less successful in their change efforts. Research aim: This research aimed to explore the reported differences in experiences between men who had reduced their angry behaviours and men who had been less able to reduce their anger. Method: Phenomenological research was carried out using data from the weekly 'check‐in' process of six male participants enrolled on one of two 10‐week mindfulness‐based anger management programmes. The data were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Key Findings: Men who reported successfully lowering their anger developed an improved bodily awareness, the ability to calm other people down in tense situations and possessed a determination to continue the course 'homework' exercises. Men who reported less success seemed to be in 'emotionally stuck' states, found it difficult to change their perceptions of threatening situations and had problems continuing their homework practice. Conclusion: Men who struggle to manage their anger may have deeper developmental issues preventing them from changing their angry responses. Aims: This paper has two aims : first, to explain the concept of empathy derived from an integrative review of contemporary nursing literature; and second, to profile a new conceptual model that can be used to inform the teaching of empathy. Background: Empathy is fundamental to therapeutic communication and integral to quality patient care. However, the lack of agreement on the definition or conceptualisation of empathy in the nursing literature can make teaching and evaluating this skill challenging and inconsistent. Design: Integrative review of literature. Data sources: Publications from January 2000 to July 2018 in Ovid Medline, Scopus, CINAHLPlus, PsycINFO, and PubMed. Review methods: As no integrative review checklists are currently available, a PRISMA checklist was adapted to guide this review. A two‐stage approach was used to explore the concept of empathy. Key definitions and attributes of empathy were identified from 11 primary studies and tabulated to allow for display and comparison. Next, the definitions and attributes of empathy drawn from a purposeful sample of 18 nursing education studies were examined, tabulated and summarised. Finally, the two samples were integrated and synthesised to form a cohesive summary, which was then illustrated with teaching and learning exemplars. Results: Despite the lack of consensus on the definitions of empathy evident in the literature, recurring attributes and elements of empathy were evident, leading to the development of a new empathy model. Conclusion: Patterns of consistency in the attributes of empathy that emerged from the review provided the basis for a new conceptual model, termed "The Empathy Continuum." Relevance to clinical practice: Each of the stages in the Empathy Continuum can be used to teach learners the meaning, attributes and application of empathy in practice. Context: Rotator cuff weakness and rotation ratio imbalances are possible risk factors for shoulder injury among overhead athletes. In consensus statements, organizations have highlighted the importance of a screening examination to identify athletes at risk of injury. The screening should be portable and designed to be feasible in many different environments and contexts. Objective: To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Self- Assessment Corner (SAC) for self-assessing shoulder isometric rotational strength and examining whether performance on 2 physical performance tests was correlated with isometric shoulder rotational strength using the SAC in handball players. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Sport setting. Patients or Other Participants: A first sample of 42 participants (18 men, 24 women) was recruited to determine the reliability and validity of the SAC. In a second sample of 34 handball players (18 men, 16 women), we examined correlations between physical performance tests and the SAC. Main Outcome Measure(s): The SAC was used to measure isometric rotational strength with the upper extremity at 908 of abduction in the frontal plane and 908 of external rotation and the elbow flexed to 908 with neutral rotation of the forearm. The SAC findings were compared with those from manual testing. Results from the seated medicine ball throw (SMBT) and closed kinetic chain upper extremity stability test (CKCUEST) were used to establish relationships with the SAC. We calculated intraclass correlation coefficients to determine relative reliability and used standard error of measurement and minimal detectable change to quantify absolute reliability. Relationships among the different strength-testing procedures and with the physical performance tests were determined using the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient (r) or Spearman rank correlation coefficient (rs). Results: We observed good to excellent reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient [2,k] range - 0.89 to 0.92). The standard error of measurement varied from 3.45 to 3.48 N. The minimal detectable change with 95% confidence intervals ranged from 8.06 to 8.13 N. Strong correlations were present among strength procedures (r-0.824, rs range-0.754-0.816). We observed moderate to strong correlations between the CKCUEST findings and rotational strength (r range - 0.570- 0.767). Moderate correlations were found between rotational strength and SMBT (r range - 0.573-0.626). Conclusions: The SAC is a clinically applicable and standardized protocol for self-assessing rotational strength in young healthy adults without pathologic conditions. This article reports the largest UK study of sociology school teachers' views of the discipline. Drawing on the sociology of the professions, we reflect on the ambivalent positioning of sociology in schools. Despite buoyant uptake, teachers claim that sociology is perceived as dated and has lower status than other elective courses, often described as a 'soft' and 'easy' subject that anyone can teach. While many students are reported to benefit from the transformative education that sociology affords, the failure to designate the subject as facilitating entry to higher status universities serves to further marginalise the discipline. We argue that sociology in schools is weakly bounded, poorly supported and lacks strong professional coherence. While this allows sociology to have an open, critical and reflexive character, it comes at the price of not being able to control delivery in schools and make claims for high status. The purpose of this study was to examine the accuracy of methods to estimate ball spin rate and spin axis direction using multi-camera tracking technology. The method implemented by Hawk-Eye and a theoretical ball trajectory model were assessed for their accuracy against high speed-vision. A theoretical ball trajectory model was found to estimate ball spin rate and the spin axis direction more accurately than the method used by Hawk-Eye. The superior performance of the ball trajectory model was indicated by a lower mean bias and standard deviation (2.92 ± 222.76) than Hawk-Eye (−100.01 ± 542.44), as well as narrower limits of agreement and a 327.63 RPM lower RMSE. Spin rates less than 4500 RPM were estimated with the highest accuracy, but neither method was able to consistently and accurately estimate spin rates >4500 RPM. The application of a trajectory model to multi-camera ball tracking data provides a practical and non-invasive method to accurately estimate the spin imparted when hitting, allowing for large-scale collection of spin rates during matches. The Rare Immunodeficiency, AutoInflammatory and AutoImmune Disease (RITA) network is a European Research Network (ERN) that brings together the leading centres for rare immune disorders. On April 2018 an online survey was sent to all RITA members in order to facilitate the harmonization of data collection in rare immune disorders registries. Currently, as many as 52 different registries collect data on rare immune disorders, of whom 30 (58%) are dedicated primarily to autoimmune diseases, 15 (29%) to primary immunodeficiencies and 12 (23%) to autoinflammatory disorders. Aims and objectives: To extract, examine and report the highest available levels of evidence from healthcare disciplines in the use of simulation‐based education as substitution for clinical placement in prelicensure programmes. Background: Simulation is widely employed across prelicensure health professional education to create safe, realistic clinical learning experiences for students. Whether simulation can be employed to substitute for actual clinical placement, and if so, in what proportion, replacement ratio and duration, is unclear. Methods: A systematic review and quality appraisal of primary studies related to prelicensure students in all health disciplines, guided by the PRISMA checklist. Results: Ten primary studies were included, representing 2,370 students from three health disciplines in four countries. Nine studies were experimental and quasi‐experimental and methodological quality was assessed as moderate to high with good to very good inter‐rater agreement. Direct substitution of simulation for clinical practice ranged from 5% to 50%. With one exception, replacement ratios were 1:1 and duration of replacement ranged from 21 hr–2 years. Levels of evaluation included measures of reaction, knowledge and behaviour transfer; no negative outcomes were reported. We appraised practicalities for design of substitution, design limitations and knowledge transfer to accreditation standards for prelicensure programmes. Conclusions: This review synthesised highest levels and quality of available evidence for substitution of simulation for clinical placement in health professional education. Included studies were heterogenous in simulation interventions (proportion, ratio and duration) and in the evaluation of outcomes. Future studies should incorporate standardised simulation curricula, widen the health professions represented and strengthen experimental designs. Relevance to clinical practice: Current evidence for clinical educational preparation does not appear to be translated into programme accreditation standards governing clinical practice experience for prelicensure programmes in relevant jurisdictions. Extensive behavioral work has documented the ability of the human visual system to extract summary representations from face ensembles (e.g., the average identity of a crowd of faces). Yet, the nature of such representations, their underlying neural mechanisms, and their temporal dynamics await elucidation. Here, we examine summary representations of facial identity in human adults (of both sexes) with the aid of pattern analyses, as applied to EEG data, along with behavioral testing. Our findings confirm the ability of the visual system to form such representations both explicitly and implicitly (i.e., with or without the use of specific instructions). We show that summary representations, rather than individual ensemble constituents, can be decoded from neural signals elicited by ensemble perception, we describe the properties of such representations by appeal to multidimensional face space constructs, and we visualize their content through neural-based image reconstruction. Further, we show that the temporal profile of ensemble processing diverges systematically from that of single faces consistent with a slower, more gradual accumulation of perceptual information. We performed genome-wide association analyses for milk, fat, and protein yields and somatic cell score based on lactation stages in the first 3 parities of Canadian Ayrshire, Holstein, and Jersey cattle. The genome-wide association analyses were performed considering 3 different lactation stages for each trait and parity: from 5 to 95, from 96 to 215, and from 216 to 305 d in milk. Effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) for each lactation stage, trait, parity, and breed were estimated by back-solving the direct breeding values estimated using the genomic best linear unbiased predictor and single-trait random regression test-day models containing only the fixed population average curve and the random genomic curves. To identify important genomic regions related to the analyzed lactation stages, traits, parities and breeds, moving windows (SNP-by-SNP) of 20 adjacent SNP explaining more than 0.30% of total genetic variance were selected for further analyses of candidate genes. A lower number of genomic windows with a relatively higher proportion of the explained genetic variance was found in the Holstein breed compared with the Ayrshire and Jersey breeds. Genomic regions associated with the analyzed traits were located on 12, 8, and 15 chromosomes for the Ayrshire, Holstein, and Jersey breeds, respectively. Especially for the Holstein breed, many of the identified candidate genes supported previous reports in the literature. However, well-known genes with major effects on milk production traits (e.g., diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase 1) showed contrasting results among lactation stages, traits, and parities of different breeds. Therefore, our results suggest evidence of differential sets of candidate genes underlying the phenotypic expression of the analyzed traits across breeds, parities, and lactation stages. Extensive work has investigated the neural processing of single faces, including the role of shape and surface properties. However, much less is known about the neural basis of face ensemble perception (e.g., simultaneously viewing several faces in a crowd). Importantly, the contribution of shape and surface properties have not been elucidated in face ensemble processing. Furthermore, how single central faces are processed within the context of an ensemble remains unclear. Here, we probe the neural dynamics of ensemble representation using pattern analyses as applied to electrophysiology data in healthy adults (seven males, nine females). Our investigation relies on a unique set of stimuli, depicting different facial identities, which vary parametrically and independently along their shape and surface properties. These stimuli were organized into ensemble displays consisting of six surround faces arranged in a circle around one central face. Overall, our results indicate that both shape and surface properties play a significant role in face ensemble encoding, with the latter demonstrating a more pronounced contribution. Importantly, we find that the neural processing of the center face precedes that of the surround faces in an ensemble. Further, the temporal profile of center face decoding is similar to that of single faces, while those of single faces and face ensembles diverge extensively from each other. Thus, our work capitalizes on a new center-surround paradigm to elucidate the neural dynamics of ensemble processing and the information that underpins it. Reproduction is expected to carry an oxidative cost, yet in many species breeders appear to sustain lower levels of oxidative damage compared to non‐breeders. This paradox may be explained by considering the intergenerational costs of reproduction. Specifically, a reduction in oxidative damage upon transitioning to a reproductive state may represent a pre‐emptive shielding strategy to protect the next generation from intergenerational oxidative damage (IOD) – known as the oxidative shielding hypothesis. Males may be particularly likely to transmit IOD, because sperm are highly susceptible to oxidative damage. Yet, the possibility of male‐mediated IOD remains largely uninvestigated. Here, we present a conceptual and methodological framework to assess intergenerational costs of reproduction and oxidative shielding of the germline in males. We discuss variance in reproductive costs and expected payoffs of oxidative shielding according to species' life histories, and the expected impact on offspring fitness.
