Objective: Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) is a vascular proliferation associated with Human Herpes Virus 8. Typical histopathological findings of KS are characterized by vascular proliferation, inflammatory cell infiltration, extravasated erythrocytes and spindle cell proliferation, although it varies according to the stage. In this study, the clinical-histopathological features of patients with KS were examined. The value of histopathological parameters in the diagnosis was investigated. Methods: Patients with KS diagnosed in University of Health Sciences Turkey, Samsun Training and Research Hospital Medical Pathology Department between 2016-2020 were retrospectively scanned. Clinical and tumor features and histopathological changes in the surrounding tissue were evaluated. Results: The most common histopathological features belonging to tumor were extravasated erythrocytes, spindle cell changes, fascicle formation, slit-like space; the most common epidermal features were hyperkeratosis and acanthosis; the most common peritumoral features were the presence of large vessels and ectatic vessels in the periphery. There was a significant relationship between the promontory sign and the lymphangioma-like area and ulcer. Also there was a significant relationship between nuclear atypia and lymphangioma-like area. Conclusion: While most of the histopathological features are characteristic for KS, none of them alone is specific. They should be evaluated together with all structural, tumoral and peritumoral features during the diagnostic approach.

Osseous metaplasia is a heterotopic bone formation and it is encountered rarely in the gastrointestinal tract, especially in benign lesions. Although its pathophysiology is not known clearly, there are several theories suggested. In this case report, we presented a case of bone formation in a rectal inflammatory polyp presenting with rectal bleeding in a 7-year-old girl. Therewithal, we reviewed the literature and summarized the subject of osseous metaplasia in colon polyps. We detected some similarities in the cases presented that suggest it might be a distinctive disease entity. Osseous metaplasia in colorectal polyps is extremely rare. To our knowledge, this is the eleventh reported case of osseous metaplasia in a rectal inflammatory polyp. Although osseous metaplasia in colon polyps has not a significant effect on both clinic and the prognosis, it can be confusing when encountered in microscopic examination.

Introduction:Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is one of the most important causes of cancer-related deaths, and its incidence has been increasing in recent years. Considering the high mortality rates, new therapeutic targets are needed to improve survival in advanced disease. HER-2 is a member of the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor family. Overexpression of HER-2 is related to malignant transformation, apoptosis and increased proliferation. In this study, the frequency of HER-2 expression in CRC and its relationship with prognostic parameters were examined.Methods:A total of 123 colorectal resection cases diagnosed as CRC in 2015-2016 in the Pathology Department of Haseki Research and Training Hospital were included in the study. Clinicopathological prognostic parameters were evaluated. Immunohistochemical staining of HER-2 was performed on slides obtained from selected paraffin blocks. The results of staining were scored as 0, 1+, 2+ or 3+. For statistical analysis, HER-2 scores of 0 and 1+ were considered as negative, (2+) scores as equivocal and (3+) scores as positive.Results:3+, 2+ and 1+ immunoreactivity (strong, medium and weak intensity of membrane staining, respectively) was detected in 13%, 21% and 16% of cases, respectively. When we compared the results of HER-2 status with the clinicopathological parameters, we found a correlation between HER-2 and distant metastasis. The distant metastasis rate was higher in HER-2-positive patients than in equivocal and negative patients. There was no significant relationship between HER-2 expression and other clinicopathological parameters we evaluated.Conclusion:Considering these HER-2 expression levels which not scarce, therapies targeting the HER-2 receptor can be a promising part of treatment regimes, although they are not the main treatment option in CRC.

Schwannomas are benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors made up of Schwann cells. Ancient schwannoma is an uncommon subtype of schwannomas exhibiting areas of cystic cavitation, calcification and hyalinization. The “ancient” term refers to tumors that are long standing and show degenerative changes and diffuse hypocellular areas. This case highlights that the possibility of ancient schwannoma should be considered in patients presenting with a retroperitoneal cystic mass.

Aim: Fine-needle aspiration plays a significant role in the evaluation of solitary thyroid nodules. Several cytological criteria are defined and these primarily aim to distinguish papillary carcinoma (PC), the most common thyroid malignancy, from other benign diseases. In our study, we aimed to determine which cytologic criteria are more valuable in diagnosing PC. Methods: Patients, who had undergone thyroidectomy operation between January 2013 and December 2014 and had preoperative fine-needle aspiration cytology, were screened. Among cases that were postoperatively diagnosed as benign, 62 cases and among those diagnosed as PC and papillary microcarcinoma, 24 cases were included in this study. Metallic prosthetic materials are used in place of bones and joints that have lost their function. Metallosis is a rare complication of the arthroplasty where metallic prostheses are used. It is defined as the infiltration of friction-related metallic debris into periprosthetic bones and soft tissues. Its histology is characterized by widespread lymphoplasmacytic and histiocytic infiltration around metal debris, foreign body giant cells, metal particles, extracellular metal deposits and intracytoplasmic debris in giant cells. Since it can be confused with malignant melanoma due to the presence of pigment as well as, giant cell tumors of the soft tissues and bones, care should be taken in the examination of post-arthroplastic materials. For this reason, we found it worthwhile to present two rare cases of post-arthroplasty metallosis, one developed in the knee joint and the other in the hip joint.

Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) is the most common mesenchymal tumor in GIT. However, the synchronous coexistence of GIST with other gastrointestinal malignancy is not so common. Herein, we report an unusual case of synchronous gastric GIST and gastric adenocarcinoma in a 74 years old male patient.

Subcutaneous panniculitis-like t-cell lymphoma (SPTL) is known as a rare type of cutaneous lymphoma characterized with penetration of neoplastic T cells to the subcutaneous tissue. It constituates less than 1% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas. We described herein a 49-year-old woman with SPTL who presented with redpurple- colored persistent subcutaneous nodules disseminated on trunk and both extremities. The lesions were present for 15 years. She had been diagnosed as panniculitis and her lesions had not regressed with panniculitis treatment. SPTL was diagnosed due to histopathological examination of the lesions that revealed CD3 positive, CD8 positive, CD4 negative and CD56 negative atypical lymphoid infiltration with lobular and septal panniculitis-like pattern. SPTL must be always kept in mind as a differential diagnosis, while examining biopsies of patients with panniculitis-like lesions resistant to long-term treatment. It is also important to remember that the biopsy material should be in such depth that involves subcutaneous fat tissue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
