28. “Abrazame Que Ayuda” (Hug Me, It Helps): Social Support and the Effect of Perceived Discrimination on Depression among US- and Foreign-Born Latinxs in the USA

Abstract

Background: Higher level of social support is known to mitigate the effect of ethnic discrimination on depression symptoms, yet little is known as to which type of social support may be most effective for ameliorating the negative health effects of perceived ethnic discrimination among Latinxs varying in nativity status. The purpose of this study is to examine the association between perceived ethnic discrimination and depression among US- and foreign-born Latinxs, and to identify specific types of social support that may buffer the aforementioned association in this population. Methods: Data from 1340 Latinx respondents (70% US-born; 30% foreign-born) collected from the Texas City Stress and Health Study (TCSHS) was used in this study. The primary outcome was depression, and it was measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale Revised (CESD-R). Results: Findings showed that higher perceived ethnic discrimination were associated with higher depressive symptoms for both foreign-born and US-born Latinxs, with higher levels of social support, specifically positive interaction support, being associated with lower depressive symptoms for both groups. Importantly, results also showed that regardless of nativity status, higher levels of affectionate support mitigated the adverse association between ethnic discrimination and depressive symptoms. Conclusion: This study provides evidence that higher levels of positive interactions and affective support may be significant factors in helping Latinxs cope with ethnic discrimination. This information is essential to inform the development of interventions aimed at building resilience in the face of discrimination among the largest and fastest growing ethnic group in the USA

Abstract

This study investigated the influence of psychocultural variables (e.g., acculturation, enculturation, ethnic identity) and personality characteristics in relation to educational expectations among 345 Latino middle school students in the U.S. Results from a path model indicate that 24.4% of the variance of educational expectations was accounted for by all predictor variables included in the model. Age, acculturation, and conscientiousness had statistically significant direct effects on educational expectations. Findings also show that elements of ethnic identity and conscientiousness mediated the association from acculturation and enculturation to educational expectations. Implications of the findings for counselors are addressed.

Abstract

This study investigated the relationship of acculturation, enculturation, and White attitudinal marginalization with distress among 214 Latina college students. Results showed that 12% of the variance in perceived distress was accounted for by all predictor variables with only behavioral enculturation and White attitudinal marginalization being statistically significant predictors. Abstract

Nearly half of U.S. adults have health literacy (HL) difficulties, and lack the ability to effectively obtain, process, and understand health information. Poor HL is associated with depression, yet mechanisms of this relation are unclear. This study examined whether social support mediated the relation between HL and depressive symptoms in 200 low-socioeconomic status (SES), racially/ethnically diverse smokers enrolled in cessation treatment. Mediation analyses were conducted using bootstrapping and controlling for SES and nicotine dependence. In simple mediation models, social support [Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (ISEL) total, subscales (Appraisal, Belonging, Tangible)] mediated the effect of HL on depression, such that lower HL was associated with lower perceived support, which predicted higher depressive symptoms (ps < .05). A multiple mediation model, with ISEL subscales entered simultaneously as mediators, was significant (p < .05) but only the Belonging subscale demonstrating independent significance (p < .05). Thus, social support may be a critical factor underlying the HL-depression relationship in low-SES, racially/ethnically diverse smokers. Abstract

Vivimos una crisis climática generada por el creciente consumo de combustibles fósiles. Es por este motivo que se hace necesario buscar fuentes de energía alternativas, que sean renovables y no aumenten las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. En este sentido, la producción de hidrocarburos a partir de gas de síntesis procedente de biomasa, vía Fischer-Tropsch, puede ser una alternativa a los combustibles fósiles tradicionales. En este trabajo se aborda la preparación de catalizadores fibrilares de hierro, preparados en un solo paso, mediante la técnica de electrohilado de disoluciones de lignina/(Fe(NO3)3·9H2O)/etanol. Los materiales fibrilares obtenidos se han estabilizado en aire a 0.5 ºC/min, hasta 200 ºC y durante 12 h. Finalmente, las fibras de lignina estabilizadas se han tratado en N2 a 500, 650 y 800 ºC y en CO2 a 800 ºC. Estos catalizadores se han usado en el proceso Fischer-Tropsch a alta temperatura (HTFT), en un reactor de lecho fijo a 20 bar, 340 ºC y relación H2/CO=1. El catalizador que presenta mayor conversión ha sido el catalizador preparado a 800 ºC en N2, el cual presenta, además, la distribución de productos más elevada hacia hidrocarburos de cadena corta C2-C5. En el presente trabajo de tesis titulado: Políticas públicas para la lucha efectiva contra la corrupción a nivel de los gobiernos locales respondió al problema: ¿De qué manera las políticas actuales del gobierno influyen en la lucha contra la corrupción a nivel de los gobiernos locales? y tuvo como objetivo general: Determinar la manera en que las políticas públicas actuales del gobierno influyen en la lucha contra la corrupción a nivel de los gobiernos locales El tipo de investigación empleado fue aplicada, el diseño es no experimental y de corte longitudinal. La muestra del presente estudio fue de 232 trabajadores de los gobiernos locales de los distritos metropolitanos de Huancayo, Ica y Pucallpa. 50. Simulation of a biorefinery process as learning tool in chemical engineering degree

Abstract

Currently, the search for alternative biomass to be used as renewable sources for energy production is one of the most important challenges to achieve a sustainable growth based on a bioeconomy strategy (Mendes et al., 2009). In this context, lignocellulosic waste are a renewable, clean, inexpensive and with high availability for the manufacture of biofuels. In this sense, the main objective of this study was the simulation and design of engineering processes that allows the valorization of lignocellulosic waste and the obtaining of biofuels as alternative to fossil fuels. This goal implies the practical application of the theoretical knowledge acquired by the student during the chemical engineering degree. Specifically, the students designed and simulated a biorefinery process that consisted of a Kraft pulping process as starting point of two main lines of production: (1) Process I: production of bioethanol and (2) Process II: direct and indirect production of dimethylether (DME), both from lignocellulosic biomass (Fig.1). Two commercial simulation packages, ASPEN HYSYS® and UNISIM were used to simulate the production of dimethylether and bioethanol, respectively. The first step was determining a strategic situation for the installation of the biorefinery. The central area of Andalusia (between the municipalities of Lucena and Antequera) was considered the most adequate area to develop the installation of the biorefinery plant after evaluating the biomass available inside of 100 kms of distance around this place. Specifically, different biomass mixtures were considered in order to ensure the viability of a constant inlet flow of biomass in the biorefinery. In function of this inlet flow of biomass, the installations were designed and dimensioned in each stage of the process. The student carried out a wide revision of state of the art to decide the most adequate processes among different alternatives to obtain dimethylether and bioethanol. The different stages selected as the most adequate in each line of the process can be observed in Fig.1. Moreover, the students evaluated the different alternatives for the valorisation and optimization of the by-products generated in each stage of the process in order to minimize the consuming of chemical compounds and energy requirements. Therefore, the students learnt to develop a real engineering process more sustainable and friendly with the environment. To sum up, the used of programs to simulate the transformation of lignocellulosic biomass in biofuels, such as, bioethanol or dimethylether, which is a process with several social, environmental and economic advantages, was an interesting learning tool for students of chemical engineering degree.
