Abstract

The spinless Falicov-Kimball model is one of the simplest models of many-body physics. While the conduction-electron density of states is temperature independent in the normal state, the f-electron density of states is strongly temperature dependent---it has an orthogonality catastrophe singularity in the metallic phase and is gapped in the insulating phase. The question we address here is whether the spectral gap is the same for both electron species as T->0. Abstract

NIRSPEC is a 1-5 um echelle spectrograph in use on the Keck II Telescope since 1999. The spectrograph is capable of both moderate (R=λ/Δλ∼2000) and high (R∼25,000) resolution observations and has been a workhorse instrument across many astronomical fields, from planetary science to extragalactic observations. In the latter half of 2018, we will upgrade NIRSPEC to improve the sensitivity and stability of the instrument and increase its lifetime. The major components of the upgrade include replacing the spectrometer and slit-viewing camera detectors with Teledyne H2RG arrays and replacing all transputer-based electronics. We present detailed design, testing, and analysis of the upgraded instrument, including the finalized optomechanical design of the new 1-5 μm slit-viewing camera, detector characterization of the science and Engineering A grade arrays, electronics systems, and updated software design. The optomechanical design of the slit-viewing camera and replacement detector head assembly have both been assembled and cold-tested in our lab. We also show results from the GigE interface to the SAM/ASIC boards to control the H2RG. The upgrade will continue NIRSPEC's legacy as a powerful near-infrared spectrograph behind one of the world's most scientifically productive telescopes.

Abstract

Kit Carson and John C. Fremont were once unmitigated Western heroes. They remain important figures in Western American history. But both have been subject to revisionism. A recent biography of Fremont, John Charles Fremont: Character as Destiny by Andrew Rolle, critiques the ex lorer as an ill-fated adventurer and opportunist (it is Rolle who compares him to Lawrence of Arabia). Carson has been branded a genocidal racist, especially for his Navajo campaign of 1863 to 1864. Carson's supporters and defenders, whom I will call Kittites, have argued that Carson was not an Indian-hater, but merely an Indian fighter when provoked; moreover, he was married to two Indian women, raised a daughter from his first marriage, adopted another Indian son, treated the Utes with considerable equanimity when he was their agent in the late 1850s, and treated the Navajos as well as he could as a commander under orders to kill all Navajo men on sight and capture women and children until they surrendered unconditionally. Carson resisted his commander, General James Carleton, by not killing all the males, but often freeing them to convince their tribe to surrender and agree to be relocated to Bosque Redondo. The numbers of Navajos killed, livestock butchered, hogans burned, and crops wasted have all been exaggerated, according to the Kitties. Carson did not administer the Long Walk, nor did he pull up the peach trees in Canyon de Chelly, nor did he preside over the disastrous reservation Carleton provided for Navajo re-education in farming and Christian civilization.

Abstract

Residual lobar volume reduction in treated lobes measured by QCT was found to be the driving mechanism of action of endobronchial coils leading to positive clinical outcomes. However, the improvement in exercise capacity and quality of life seems to be affected by the presence of cardiac disease. See related Editorial, Background and objective The RENEW trial demonstrated that bronchoscopic lung volume reduction using endobronchial coils improves quality of life, pulmonary function and exercise performance. In this post hoc analysis of RENEW, we examine the mechanism of action of endobronchial coils that drives improvement in clinical outcomes. Methods A total of 78 patients from the RENEW coil‐treated group who were treated in one or both lobes that were deemed as the most destroyed were included in this retrospective analysis. Expiratory and inspiratory HRCT scans were used to assess lobar volume change from baseline to 12 months post coil treatment in treated and untreated lobes. Results Reduction in lobar RV in treated lobes was significantly associated with favourable clinical improvement. Independent predictor of the change in RV and FEV1 was the change in lobar RV reduction in the treated lobes and for change in 6MWD the absence of cardiac disease and the change in SGRQ, while the independent predictor of change in SGRQ was the change in 6MWD. Conclusion Our results suggest that residual lobar volume reduction in treated lobes measured by QCT is the driving mechanism of action of endobronchial coils leading to positive clinical outcomes. However, the improvement in exercise capacity and quality of life seems to be affected by the presence of cardiac disease.
