Abstract While research has unveiled and quantified brain markers of abnormal neurodevelopment, clinicians still work with qualitative metrics for MRI brain investigation. The purpose of the current article is to bridge the knowledge gap between case-control cohort studies and individual patient care. Here, we provide a unique dataset of seventy-three 3-to-17 years-old healthy subjects acquired with a 6-minute MRI protocol encompassing T1 and T2 relaxation quantitative sequence that can be readily implemented in the clinical setting; MP2RAGE for T1 mapping and the prototype sequence GRAPPATINI for T2 mapping. White matter and grey matter volumes were automatically quantified. We further provide normative developmental curves based on these two imaging sequences; T1, T2 and volume normative ranges with respect to age were computed, for each ROI of a pediatric brain atlas. This open-source dataset provides normative values allowing to position individual patients acquired with the same protocol on the brain maturation curve and as such provides potentially useful quantitative biomarkers facilitating precise and personalized care.

Abstract Vanadyl(IV) 5,10,15,20‐tetraphenylporphyrin (VOTPP) is an S = 1/2 molecular system with remarkable spin qubit properties. Its structure offers a higher chemical tunability with respect to archetypal molecular qubits, such as vanadyl(IV)Phthalocyanines (VOPc), and a less rigid organic scaffold where peripheral phenyl rings can promote electron decoupling from the substrate. The properties of a VOTPP monolayer on the Ag(100) surface by photoemission spectroscopies and synchrotron radiation are studied. The results indicate that the electronic and spin features of the massive phase are retained in the monolayer. Moreover, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed the existence of two distinct species characterized by varying strengths of molecule‐surface interactions. Like VOPc, these species can be assigned to molecules with the vanadyl group oriented upward or toward the surface. However, in contrast to VOPc, only subtle screening effects are observed in the oxygen‐down configuration, suggesting a more pronounced decoupling effect inherent in the VOTPP structure. This opens broader perspectives for investigations focusing on spin characteristics at the single‐molecule level.

Fournier’s gangrene (FG) is a rare form of necrotizing fasciitis of the perineal, genital, or perianal region. It is characterized by an aggressive course and high mortality rate, over 20%. FG demands immediate treatment including resuscitation maneuvers, intravenous antibiotic therapy and early surgical debridement. Background/Objectives: The gold-standard treatment for FG is surgical reconstruction. However, up to date, no precise guidelines exist. Thus, we decided to systematically review the literature, focusing on FG contemporary approaches to reconstructive surgery, aiming to analyze the various reconstructive strategies and their specific indications. Methods: A systematic review was carried out according to the PRISMA statement by searching various databases from April 2014 to April 2024, using the terms ‘‘Fournier Gangrene OR Fournier Gangrene Reconstruction OR Fournier Gangrene Treatment OR Fournier Gangrene Plastic Surgery OR Necrotizing Fasciitis OR Necrotizing Fasciitis AND Reconstruction”. The eligibility criteria included original studies aimed at discussing FG reconstruction with at least three clinical cases. Results: The final synthesis included 38 articles, and 576 reconstructions were described. Of these, 77.6% were minimally invasive strategies (direct closure, secondary healing, grafts, and local random flaps), while more invasive reconstructions (loco-regional flaps based on known vascular anatomy) were adopted in 22.4%. No free flaps were reported. Conclusions: FG requires immediate medical interventions including broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, surgical debridement, adjuvant therapies, and reconstructive surgeries. Taking into account the anatomical characteristics of the inguinal-crural region, skin grafts and local random flaps could offer versatile and effective reconstructions for most FG cases, while the more invasive strategies should be reserved for very few cases. Future research is warranted to define an FG dedicated reconstruction protocol.

Introdução: A Síndrome Pós-COVID-19 Aguda (PASC) está relacionada a sintomas que persistem por mais de 12 semanas. A fisiopatologia da PASC ainda é pouco elucidada em relação a marcadores hematológicos e inflamatórios. Objetivos: Avaliar pacientes que tiveram sequelas e correlacionar com marcadores inflamatórios, alterações hematológicas meses após a resolução da doença aguda do COVID-19 por meio de uma revisão sistemática. Material e métodos: Foram selecionados ensaios clínicos e estudos observacionais publicados em inglês, entre 2021 e 2023, tendo como referência as bases de dados MedLine, Web of Science, Embase e Scopus, com as seguintes palavras chaves e suas respectivas variações no DeCS/MeSH: long-COVID; Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID; biomarkers; inflammatory, complications. Foram incluídos estudos que continham exames laboratoriais e avaliaram pacientes que se recuperaram da COVID-19 com no mínimo três meses após a fase aguda. Foram encontrados 316 estudos e após aplicação dos critérios de inclusão e exclusão somente quatro foram selecionados. Resultados: Foram avaliados 252 pacientes. O D-dímero pode prever sequelas pulmonares ou associado a gravidade da doença (p < 0,05). Foram observados que a elevação de alguns biomarcadores durante a fase crítica prediz maior predisposição a sequelas (p < 0,05) como a elevação de: IL-6 basal em até 12 meses; MMP-9 e Krebs von den Lungen-6 (KL-6) em até 3 meses. Discussão: Foi demonstrado correlação PCR, D-dímero, e KL-6 e sequelas. Ademais, os marcadores inflamatórios IL-6 e D-dímero são preditores desfavoráveis para a recuperação pulmonar. Conclusão: Em síntese, a presente revisão, corrobora alteração em alguns marcadores mesmo meses após a doença, os quais poderão ser utilizados para futuras pesquisas e elucidações sobre a fisiopatologia, também como alvos diagnósticos e terapêuticos na PASC.

Introdução: A lesão pulmonar aguda relacionada à transfusão (TRALI), reação que pode ocorrer dentro de 6 horas, é uma condição rara e que há indícios do envolvimento de anticorpos anti-antígeno leucocitário humano (HLA) e anti-antígeno neutrofílico humano (HNA). Objetivos: Avaliar, por meio de uma revisão sistemática, pacientes que tiveram TRALI e a sua associação com anticorpos anti-HLA e anti-HNA do doador ou receptor. Material e métodos: Para a seleção dos estudos, foi utilizada a base de dados MedLine aplicando os filtros case reports, english, 10 years e usando as seguintes palavras chaves e suas respectivas variações no DeCS/MeSH: Transfusion-Related Acute Lung Injury; HLA Antigens; HNA Antigens. Foram incluídos estudos que relacionavam a TRALI e a presença de anticorpos anti-HLA e anti-HNA no doador ou receptor e excluídos estudos sem dados completos. A partir disso, três artigos foram selecionados para compor o escopo dessa revisão. Resultados: Os estudos envolveram 10 pacientes com TRALIsendo cinco mulheres e cinco homens. Em relação ao sangue do doador, ocorreram cinco casos de TRALI causados por uma doadora multípara anti-HNA positiva que nunca recebeu transfusão. Por outro lado, em cinco pacientes receptores foram encontrados anti-HLA prévios no plasma sendo que um caso ocorreu em uma mulher multípara que recebeu soro de doador com anti-HLA. Por fim, essa revisão não discrimina se os casos de TRALI foram provenientes dos anticorpos do doador, receptor ou ambos. Discussão: Os resultados ratificam que a fisiopatologia envolve anticorpos anti-HLA e anti-HNA do doador, predisposição individual e desenvolvimento de aloanticorpos (TRALI reversa). Por outro lado, receptoras multíparas poderiam estar em maior risco de desenvolver TRALI reversa ressaltando a importância da triagem também nos receptores. Conclusão: Essa revisão evidenciou que a fisiopatologia da TRALI é mediada por anticorpos anti-HLA e anti-HNA destacando a necessidade de triagem não só nos doadores como também nos receptores para mitigar a ocorrência de TRALI.

Magnetic molecules have long been seen to hold promise in magnetic sensing applications. In this paper, Serrano et al show that a single layer of a magnetic molecule, a terbium based complex, is sensitive to the local magnetic field variation of a superconducting surface on which it is deposited.

Despite transrectal prostate biopsy (TRPB) being still widespread globally, the EAU Guidelines strongly recommend the transperineal approach, due to the reported lower infectious risk. Our study aims to evaluate the impact of a standardized clinical pathway for TRPB on post-operative complications. We prospectively collected data from all patients undergoing mpMRI-targeted TRPB at our Academic Centre from January 2020 to December 2022. All patients followed a standardized, structured multistep pathway. Post-procedural complications were collected and classified according to the Clavien–Dindo (CD) Classification. Among 458 patients, post-procedural adverse events were reported by 203 (44.3%), of which 161 (35.2%) experienced CD grade 1 complications (hematuria [124, 27.1%], hematochezia [22, 4.8%], hematospermia [14, 3.1%], or a combination [20, 4.4%]), and 45 (9.0%) reported CD grade 2 complications (acute urinary retention or hematuria needing catheterization, as well as urinary tract infections, of which 2 cases required hospitalization). No major complications, including sepsis, were observed. At uni- and multivariable analysis, age > 70 years and BMI > 25 kg/ m2 for patients were identified as predictors of post-operative complications. The results of our study confirm that TRPB is a safe and cost-effective procedure with a low risk of severe adverse events in experienced hands and following a standardized pathway.

Cultivated tomato, Solanum lycopersicum, is one of the most common fruits in the global food industry. Together with the wild tomato Solanum pennellii, it is widely used for developing better cultivars. MicroRNAs affect mRNA regulation, inhibiting its translation and/or promoting its degradation. Important proteins involved in these processes are ARGONAUTE and DICER. This study aimed to identify and characterize the genes involved in the miRNA processing pathway, miRNA molecules and target genes in both species. We validated the presence of pathway genes and miRNA in different NGS libraries and 6 miRNA families using quantitative RT-PCR. We identified 71 putative proteins in S. lycopersicum and 108 in S. pennellii likely involved in small RNAs processing. Of these, 29 and 32 participate in miRNA processing pathways, respectively. We identified 343 mature miRNAs, 226 pre-miRNAs in 87 families, including 192 miRNAs, which were not previously identified, belonging to 38 new families in S. lycopersicum. In S. pennellii, we found 388 mature miRNAs and 234 pre-miRNAs contained in 85 families. All miRNAs found in S. pennellii were unpublished, being identified for the first time in our study. Furthermore, we identified 2471 and 3462 different miRNA target in S. lycopersicum and S. pennellii, respectively.

ObjectivesSelective caries removal aims to remove carious tissue in deep dentin lesions. However, a discussion stands on the value of antiseptics and chemomechanical adjuvant methods to reduce the bacterial load on residual caries lesions. This systematic review has addressed two main clinical questions to compare the antimicrobial efficacy of available methods using (1) antiseptic or (2) chemomechanical agents before restoring dentin carious lesions.MethodsWe included randomized and non-randomized controlled trials (RCTs/ NRCTs). We searched eight databases from inception to October 2021. Paired reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias. The primary outcome was the reduction in the number of total bacterial in dentin, whereas secondary outcomes were reduction in the number of Lactobacillus and Streptococcus. We used the ratio of ratio of post-treatment to baseline means between two interventions in the logarithmic scale as a proper effect measure. Certainty of evidence was assessed with the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach.ResultsWe included 14 RCTs and 9 NRCTs, with nine interventions. Regardless the method, the number of bacteria at baseline was similar or exceeded that after the intervention, particularly in NRCTs. The evidence was inconclusive for most comparisons. Among antiseptic agents, chlorhexidine (CHX) resulted in an average of 1.14 times [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.08–1.21] more total bacterial than photodynamic therapy in RCTs. Among NRCTS, the natural agents resulted in five times more total bacterial than CHX (95% CI: 2–11). For chemomechanical methods, the control resulted in eight times (95% CI: 4–17) more total bacterial than Carisolv (SHAA).ConclusionsThe certainty of the evidence was very low for all comparisons showing uncertainty whether one treatment could be more effective than another for dentin disinfection. So far, exclusively removing soft carious dentin would be enough to reduce the bacterial count.

Florfenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the amphenicols class that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to bacteria's ribosomal subunits. This drug is commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat bacterial infectious diseases in cattle, swine, poultry, and fish. The proposed method uses a quick protein precipitation with acetonitrile for the extraction of florfenicol and florfenicol amine in serum and seminal plasma, followed by analysis in UHPLC-MS/MS for their simultaneous quantification. A BEH C18 reversed-phase column was chosen for analyte separation, allowing to obtaining sharp and symmetrical peak shapes in a chromatographic run of just 3.5 min under programmed conditions. Two specific transitions were observed for each analyte, and florfenicol-d3 was used as the internal standard. The approach was fully validated in each matrix over ranges suitable for field concentrations of florfenicol and florfenicol amine, showing good linearity during each day of testing (R2 always >0.99). Excellent accuracy and precision were demonstrated, for both analytes, by calculated bias always within ±15% and CV% always below 15% at all QC levels tested. The satisfactory outcomes obtained during recovery, matrix effect, and process efficiency investigations in serum and seminal plasma confirmed the strength of the method for the quantification of target compounds. To our knowledge, this is the first LC-MS/MS-validated approach for the quantification of florfenicol and florfenicol amine in serum and seminal plasma and was successfully applied for the determination of their concentration-time profiles in bulls. This paves the way to understanding the pharmacokinetics of this antibiotic and its active metabolite in bull’s seminal plasma, which will enable the design of more appropriate treatment protocols.

Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) is a widely utilized process in various industrial applications, serving as a protective and hard coating. However, its presence in fields like fashion has only recently emerged, as electroplating processes had previously dominated this reality. The future looks toward the replacement of the most hazardous and toxic electrochemical processes, especially those involving Cr(VI) and cyanide galvanic baths, which have been restricted by the European Union. Unfortunately, a complete substitution with PVD coatings is not feasible. Currently, the combination of both techniques is employed to achieve new aesthetic features, including a broader color range and diverse textures, rendering de facto PVD of primary interest for the decorative field and the fashion industry. This review aims to outline the guidelines for decorative industries regarding PVD processes and emphasize the recent advancements, quality control procedures, and limitations.

Nowadays, the circular economy is gaining more and more attention in sectors where the raw material supply is critical for both cost and geo-political reasons. Moreover, the environmental impact issue calls for recycling. From this perspective, the recovery of rare earth elements represents a strategic point. On the other hand, the high cost and the dangerous standard recovery methods that apply to NdFeB magnets limits options for traditional recycling. A new mechanical method is proposed, not requiring hydrogen, high temperature, or chemical processes, but instead using an impact mill designed to operate in vacuum. A traditional impact mill operating in a glove box filled with Ar atmosphere has also been used for comparison. The obtained NdFeB powders were analyzed in terms of magnetic properties and chemical composition, particularly in terms of the oxygen content.

Bovine mastitis is a major concern for the dairy cattle community worldwide. Mastitis, subclinical or clinical, can be caused by contagious or environmental pathogens. Costs related to mastitis include direct and indirect losses, leading to global annual losses of USD 35 billion. The primary treatment of mastitis is represented by antibiotics, even if that results in the presence of residues in milk. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics in livestock is contributing to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), resulting in a limited resolution of mastitis treatments, as well as a serious threat for public health. Novel alternatives, like the use of plant essential oils (EOs), are needed to replace antibiotic therapy when facing multidrug-resistant bacteria. This review aims to provide an updated overview of the in vitro and in vivo studies available on EOs and their main components as an antibacterial treatment against a variety of mastitis causing pathogens. There are many in vitro studies, but only several in vivo. Given the promising results of treatments with EOs, further clinical trials are needed.

As warned by Sir Alexander Fleming in his Nobel Prize address: “the use of antimicrobials can, and will, lead to resistance”. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has recently increased due to the overuse and misuse of antibiotics, and their use in animals (food-producing and companion) has also resulted in the selection and transmission of resistant bacteria. The epidemiology of resistance is complex, and factors other than the overall quantity of antibiotics consumed may influence it. Nowadays, AMR has a serious impact on society, both economically and in terms of healthcare. This narrative review aimed to provide a scenario of the state of the AMR phenomenon in veterinary medicine related to the use of antibiotics in different animal species; the impact that it can have on animals, as well as humans and the environment, was considered. Providing some particular instances, the authors tried to explain the vastness of the phenomenon of AMR in veterinary medicine due to many and diverse aspects that cannot always be controlled. The veterinarian is the main reference point here and has a high responsibility towards the human–animal–environment triad. Sharing such a burden with human medicine and cooperating together for the same purpose (fighting and containing AMR) represents an effective example of the application of the One Health approach.

The terbium(III) ion is a particularly suitable candidate for the creation of surface-based magnetic and luminescent devices. In the present work, we report the epitaxial growth of needle-like objects composed of [Tb(hfac)3·2H2O]n (where hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) polymeric units on muscovite mica, which is observed by atomic force microscopy. The needle-like shape mimics the structure observed in the crystalline bulk material. The growth of this molecular organization is assisted by water adsorption on the freshly air-cleaved muscovite mica. This deposition technique allows for the observation of a significant amount of nanochains grown along three preferential directions 60° apart from another. The magnetic properties and the luminescence of the nanochains can be detected without the need of surface-dedicated instrumentation. The intermediate value of the observed luminescence lifetime of the deposits (132 µs) compared to that of the bulk (375 µs) and the CHCl3 solution (13 µs) further reinforces the idea of water-induced growth.

Abstract Gaining control over the grafting geometry is critically important for any application of surface‐supported single‐molecule magnets (SMMs) in data storage, spintronics, and quantum information science. Here, tetrairon(III) SMMs with a propeller‐like structure are functionalized with thioacetyl‐terminated alkyl chains to promote chemisorption on gold surfaces from solution and to evaluate differences in adsorption geometry and magnetic properties as a function of chain length. The prepared monolayers are investigated using X‐ray absorption techniques with linearly and circularly polarized light to extract geometrical and magnetic information, respectively. All derivatives remain intact and form partially oriented monolayers on the gold surface. A ligand‐field analysis of the observed X‐ray natural linear dichroism shows that the threefold molecular axis is invariably biased toward the surface normal, in agreement with ab initio calculations. This preferential orientation is most pronounced in monolayers of the shortest‐chain derivative, which are further studied with an ultralow temperature X‐ray magnetic circular dichroism setup operating down to 350 mK. The isothermal field sweeps with the magnetic field at normal incidence show an open hysteresis loop below 1 K, while measurements at different incidence angles prove the magnetic anisotropy of the monolayers.

Low values of the ratio of plasmatic soluble blocking factor FMS-like tyrosine Kinase 1 and placental growth factor (sFlt-1/PlGF) are required for an adequate placental angiogenesis and function. It has been shown that patients affected by gestational diabetes (GD) and patients with pneumonia from SARS-CoV-2 are characterized by an increased sFlt-1/PlGF ratio. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the sFlt-1-PlGF ratio in pregnancies complicated by COVID-19 and GD. We compared the plasmatic sFlt-1/PlGF ratio among the following groups of pregnant women: COVID-19, GD patients; COVID-19, non-GD patients; non-COVID-19, GD patients; and non-COVID-19, non-GD controls. We enrolled 62 women in the present study, who were divided as follows: 14 COVID-19, GD patients; 12 COVID-19, non-GD patients; 11 non-COVID-19, GD patients; and 25 non-COVID-19, non-GD controls. The COVID-19, GD patients presented a higher pre-pregnancy BMI, a higher prevalence of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy as a co-morbidity, and an increased need for medication for their diabetes. Neonatal data were similar between the groups. The controls showed a significantly lower sFlt-1/PlGF ratio compared to pregnancies complicated by GD and SARS-CoV-2 infection. The sFlt-1/PlGF ratio was higher in patients affected by both GD and SARS-CoV-2 infection; these subjects were characterized by a greater incidence of obesity and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
