The report provides the scope of the sustainability for the data management of the Marine subdomain, for the research infrastructures themselves and with respect to their contributions to ENVRI-FAIR and EOSC. Recommendations to consolidate the sustainability of the Marine subdomain contribution to EOSC beyond the ENVRI-FAIR project and the RI services are proposed.

Euro-Argo strategy in the context of the OneArgo new international design

This report presents the first results of work package 7 (Task 7.3) on “Report on demo mission and dissemination pathways of obtained data based on different observational platforms”. In order to improve our understanding of the ocean's role in the Earth’s climate change, and to assess long-term changes in the oceanic carbon cycle, sustained high-quality in situ measurements are needed. Due to its peculiar geographical position, the Eastern Tropical Atlantic Ocean is impacted by multiple coupled climate changes, varying over numerous timescales, and impacting surrounding areas (Foltz et al., 2019). Thus, changes occurring in this region impact the global ocean as it is connected to the Southern and Northern branches of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. Task 7.3 aims to develop indicators for carbon flux observations in this region based on the improvement of existing components and on the deployment of new observing tools. Thus, this task considers the use of biogeochemical (BGC) Argo floats, moored buoys, and autonomous surface vehicles such as Wave Glider and Saildrone for the acquisition of high-quality carbon measurements at a regional scale. A pilot mission has been designed and embedded into existing components of the Tropical Atlantic Observing System (TAOS) to improve the spatio-temporal coverage of carbon measurements in this area. This approach aims to circumvent observational gaps and disparities observed in response to conventional data collections that undersample some biogeochemical provinces. By providing high-quality carbon measurements, this task aims to enhance the robustness of tropical carbon flux estimates and, thus, our understanding of the oceanic response to anthropogenic carbon invasion. This report presents the results of Task 7.3 on “Development of BGC-Argo data quality validation based on an integrative multiplatform approach”. Observing changes in ocean conditions on the spatiotemporal scales necessary to constrain carbon uptake is a challenge. Defined as an Essential Ocean Variable (EOV) by the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS, e.g., Tanhua et al., 2019), pH is relevant to assess numerous crucial questions regarding the oceanic evolution in response to the current global changes. However, the large spatiotemporal variability of this carbonate system parameter requires sustained observations to decipher trends and punctual events. Within this scope, numerous pH sensors suitable for deployments both on autonomous observing tools and fixed stations have been developed. Nevertheless, as interpreting changes relies on accurate data, and because offsets or drifts in pH data might appear in response to changes in the sensor k0 constant, a consistent and rigorous correction procedure to quality-control and process the data has been implemented. This report presents the application of this method to pH data acquired by BGC-Argo floats launched in the Tropical Atlantic area.

Assessment of Data flow and availability on the assembly centre. Description of the O2 delayed mode quality control

Between December 2013 and March 2014, a cluster of about 12 storm events hit the coast of Brittany with an exceptional frequency. It was in February that these storm events were the most frequent and particularly virulent. The significant wave heights measured off Finistere reached respectively 12.3 m and 12.4 m during Petra and Ulla storms on February 5 and 14. However, analysis of hydrodynamic conditions shows that only three episodes promoted extreme morphogenetic conditions because they were combined with high spring tide level. The first one occurred on January 1 to 4, it was followed by events from February 1 to 3, and March 2-3. During these three extreme events observed tide levels were above highest astronomical tide level (HAT). Maximum surge level (0.97 m) was reached during Ulla storm of February 14-15. For comparison, we must go back in the winter of 1989-90 to find such extreme storm frequency. High frequency topomorphological measurements were achieved on more than ten coastal zones distributed around Brittany peninsula to assess the effects of these storms on shoreline erosion. They show that during the first phase (December-January), meeting it's climax from 1,1 to 4(th) of January 2014, shoreline erosion has been limited, with the exception of southern Brittany. This is due to the SW orientation of waves. For all monitoring sites, it has averaged -2.7 m, the averaged minimum equal to 0.6 m, and the averaged maximum at -6.20 m. During the second phase from mid-January to mid-February, reaching it's climax on 1-2 of February storm corresponding to the most morphogenetic event of the winter, the average of shoreline retreat reached -4.2 m, the averaged minimum reached approximately -1.5m, the averaged maximum -95 in. It is essentially the Northern and Western coast of Brittany that experienced largest shoreline retreat due to W-NW storm wave orientation. During the third and last phase, running from mid-February to mid-March, and characterized by the, Entre les mois de décembre 2013 et mars 2014, une douzaine de tempêtes ont touché la pointe bretonne avec une fréquence exceptionnelle. C’est au mois de février que ces évènements ont été les plus fréquents et particulièrement virulents. Les hauteurs significatives des vagues mesurées au large du Finistère ont atteint respectivement 12,3 m et 12,4 m lors des tempêtes Petra et Ulla du 5 et du 14 février. L’analyse des conditions hydrodynamiques montre toutefois que seuls trois épisodes ont été particulièrement morphogènes car ils ont été combinés à des fortes marées de vive-eau ; il s’agit des évènements couvrant les périodes du 1 au 4 janvier, du 1 au 3 février, et du 2-3 mars 2014 durant lesquels les niveaux de marée observée ont été supérieurs au niveau des plus hautes marées astronomiques (PHMA). Les surcotes maximum (entre 0,80 m et 0,97 m) ont été atteintes lors de la tempête Ulla du 14-15 février. Il faut remonter à l’hiver 1989-1990 pour connaître une situation hivernale similaire, même si les tempêtes du mois de février 1990 avaient été encore plus nombreuses et plus violentes. Des mesures topo-morphologiques à haute fréquence réalisées sur une dizaine de cordons littoraux répartis sur le pourtour de la péninsule bretonne permettent d’évaluer les effets de ces évènements sur le recul du trait de côte. Elles montrent que durant la première phase (décembre-janvier), marquée notamment par l’épisode morphogène du 1 au 4 janvier 2014, l’érosion du rivage a été limitée, à l’exception du sud Bretagne. Cela s’explique par l’orientation plutôt sud-ouest de la houle incidente. De façon générale, le recul a atteint en moyenne -2,7 m (le minimum moyenné sur l’ensemble des sites : -0,6 m ; le maximum moyenné sur l’ensemble des sites : -6,20 m).
