Author(s): Masoome Barani [sup.1], Maryam Bakhtiari [sup.2], Vahid Sadeghi Firoozabadi [sup.3], Mahshid Mehdizadeh [sup.4], Akram Sadeghi [sup.5] Author Affiliations: (1) grid.411600.2, Department of Clinical Psychology, Faculty of Medical Science, Shahid [...], Adjuvant Psychological Therapy (APT) is one of the therapeutic methods derived from cognitive-behavioral therapy that enhances cancer patients' quality of life specifically through reducing their mental disorders and boosting their fighting spirit. Considering the effectiveness of this short-term structural therapy on cancer patients in the studies conducted abroad, the present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of APT on patients with Hematologic Malignancies. The study population comprised of patients with Hematologic Malignancies referring to Ayatollah Taleghani Medical Training Center from March 2015 to March 2016. Five testees were selected through convenience sampling method. Each testee filled out the quality-of-life questionnaire for cancer patients (QOQ-C30) in two baseline sessions, one every two weeks during the therapy, and one as a follow-up session (one month later). Descriptive statistical indices, graphical analysis, Friedman nonparametric test, and Wilcoxon test were used for data analysis. The obtained results indicate a significant improvement in quality of life of patients with Hematologic Malignancies. It can thus be concluded that APT can help patients with their adaptability to cancer as well as the treatment of their cancer and, as a result, reducing their mental distress. We Hypothesized APT by concentrating on behavioral, cognitive, interpersonal and emotion dimensions enhance both of psychological and physical sides of quality of life in patients with hematologic malignancies.

Abstract

Introduction African American cancer patients have higher mortality rates and shorter survival times compared with European American patients (1-5). In the United States, for every 100,000 cancer patients, the age-adjusted [...], BACKGROUND. African American patients have higher cancer mortality rates and shorter survival times compared with European American patients. Despite a significant focus on socioeconomic factors, recent findings strongly argue the existence of biological factors driving this disparity. Most of these factors have been described in a cancer-type specific context rather than a pan-cancer setting. METHODS. A novel in silico approach based on Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) coupled to transcription factor enrichment was carried out to identify common biological drivers of pan-cancer racial disparity using The Cancer Genome Atlas data set. Mitochondrial content in patient tissues was examined using a multi-cancer tissue microarray approach (TMA). RESULTS. Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation was uniquely enriched in tumors from African American patients compared with tumors of various cancer types from European American patients. Tumors from African American patients also showed strong enrichment for the ERR1-PGC1[alpha]-mediated transcriptional program, which has been implicated in mitochondrial biogenesis. TMA analysis revealed that cancers from African American patients harbor significantly more mitochondria compared with the same cancers from European American patients. CONCLUSION. These findings highlight changes in mitochondria as a common distinguishing feature among tumors from African American versus European American patients in a pan-cancer setting, and provide the rationale for the repurposing of mitochondrial inhibitors to treat cancers from African American patients. Introduction Inhalation of radon (222Rn) and its radioactive decay products (radon progeny) is associated with increased risk of developing lung cancer (Darby et al., 2005; Krewski et al., 2005). Worldwide, [...], Exposure to radon continues to be a leading cause of lung cancer despite the availability of effective testing and mitigation options. This study examined differences in beliefs about radon testing among radon testers (n = 110) and a comparison sample of residents (n = 198) in Utah County, Utah, which is a high radon area. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze relationships between radon testing status and self-efficacy, knowledge, behavioral modeling, and risk perception. Risk perception (0.20, p < .04), self-efficacy (0.30, p < .01), and knowledge (0.40, p < .001) were positively associated with testing. Behavioral modeling was indirectly associated with testing through intervening pathways of self-efficacy (z = 1.97, p < .05) and knowledge (z = 2.57, p = .01). The results imply that increasing radon knowledge and self-efficacy, along with traditional intervention efforts focusing on risk perception, might be important factors to increase radon testing in residential areas.
