Abstract

Throughout its history, Operational Research has evolved to include a variety of methods, models and algorithms that have been applied to a diverse and wide range of contexts. This encyclopedic article consists of two main sections: methods and applications. The first aims to summarise the up-to-date knowledge and provide an overview of the state-of-the-art methods and key developments in the various subdomains of the field. The second offers a wide-ranging list of areas where Operational Research has been applied. The article is meant to be read in a nonlinear fashion. It should be used as a point of reference or first-port-of-call for a diverse pool of readers: academics, researchers, students, and practitioners. The entries within the methods and applications sections are presented in alphabetical order. The authors dedicate this paper to the 2023 Turkey/Syria earthquake victims. We sincerely hope that advances in OR will play a role towards minimising the pain and suffering caused by this and future catastrophes.

4. An assessment of European electricity arbitrage using storage systems

Abstract

This study analyses the current viability of this business based on a sample of European countries in the year 2019; countries where electricity prices (day-ahead market) and financial conditions show a certain degree of heterogeneity. We basically follow a sequence of three analyses in our study. Firstly, a Linear Mixed-Integrated Programming model has been developed to optimize the arbitrage strategy for each country in the sample. Secondly, using the cash-flows from the optimization model, we calculate two financial indicators (NPV and IRR) in order to select the optimal converter size for each country. Tax and discount rates specific to each country have been used with the calculation of this second rate following the methodology proposed by the Spanish regulator. Thirdly, a mixed linear regression model is proposed in order to investigate the importance of observed and unobserved heterogeneity (at country level) in explaining the business profitability., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables

12. Design and analysis of demand-adapted railway timetables

Abstract

Railway scheduling and timetabling are common stages in the classical hierarchical railway planning process and they perhaps represent the step with major influence on user's perception about quality of service. This aspect, in conjunction with their contribution to service profitability, makes them a widely studied topic in the literature, where nowadays many efforts are focused on improving the solving methods of the corresponding optimization problems. However, literature about models considering detailed descriptions of passenger demand is sparse. This paper tackles the problem of timetable determination by means of building and solving a non-linear integer programming model which fits the arrival and departure train times to a dynamic behavior of demand. The optimization model results are then used for computing several measures to characterize the quality of the obtained timetables considering jointly both user and company points of view. Some aspects are discussed, including the influence of train capacity and the validity of Random Incidence Theorem. An application to the C5 line of Madrid rapid transit system is presented. Different measures are analyzed in order to improve the insight into the proposed model and analyze in advance the influence of different objectives on the resulting timetable.

23. A Multilayer Network Approach for the Bimodal Bus–Pedestrian Line Planning Problem

Abstract

In this paper, we formulate and solve the urban line planning problem considering a multilayer representation of a bimodal transportation network. Classical formulations are usually constructed over a planar network, which implies the need to introduce several strong non-linearities in terms of frequencies when modeling transfer times. In the proposed network representation, each candidate line is stored in a specific layer and the passengers’ movements for each origin–destination pair are modelled considering a strategy subgraph, contributing to a sparse model formulation that guarantees feasibility and simplifies the assignment process. The methodology is first tested using the Mandl network, obtaining results that are comparable in terms of quality with the best metaheuristic approaches proposed in the scientific literature. With the aim of testing its applicability to large scenarios, the proposed approach is then used to design the main urban transit network of Seville, a large scenario with 141 nodes and 454 links, considering artificial unfavorable demand data. The reasonable computation time required to exactly solve the problem to optimality confirms the possibility of using the multilayer approach to deal with multimodal network design strategic problems.

Abstract

Cellular manufacturing consists of grouping similar machines in cells and dedicating each of them to process a family of similar part types. In this paper, grouping parts into families and machines into cells is done in two steps: first, part families are formed and then machines are assigned. In phase one, weighted similarity coefficients are computed and parts are clustered using a new self-organizing neural network. In phase two, a linear network flow model is used to assign machines to families. To test the proposed approach, different problems from the literature have been solved. Abstract

The problem of managing selective collection of waste using containers inside historic city centres can be performed in three sequential phases: first, locating containers along the streets; then, determining the minimum fleet size required to perform all collecting services; and finally, identifying the optimal collection routes. Obviously, the result of the first phase highly influences the procedure since this will determine the decisions to be taken for the subsequent phases. This paper is focused on the first phase. Facility-customer distances, the size of container groups and the cost of installing those containers in specific sites along the streets are parameters to be considered when designing the collecting system. Additionally, we assume that customers are willing to have a solidarity behaviour, which consists of using a container assigned to them within a pre-established proximity radius, although the assigned container may not be necessarily the closest to their residence. For this scenario, a more efficient deployment of containers for selective collection of urban solid waste can be obtained. To illustrate the performance of the developed methodology, a computational experience has been carried out on a network with randomized data based on a zone belonging to city of Seville (Spain).
