The topic of physical and chemical changes is one of the basic and essential issues of both the lower-secondary school science curriculum and the upper-secondary school chemistry curriculum in many countries. The focus of the present study is to investigate the students' cognitive structures on the topic of physical and chemical changes at different grade levels and to compare how the aspects of students' cognitive structures differ at 8th, 9th, and 10th-grade levels. The data were collected from a total of 388 students (126 8th-graders, 129 9th-graders, and 133 10th-graders) through using a word association test (WAT) which contains eight stimulus words. Both the relatedness coefficient (RC) method and the response frequency mapping method were used in the analysis of the data and mapping of the group cognitive structures of the students. The variables related to the concepts or ideas contained, the connections between the concepts, and the information processing skills, which are the three main aspects in defining the cognitive structures, are compared according to the grade level. It has been concluded that the cognitive structure of the 9th-grade students is the most comprehensive, and integrated, and has a higher information retrieval rate. On the other hand, when the data obtained from both the RC values and the response frequency mappings were examined, it was found that there were also several similarities in the cognitive structures of the three grade levels. For instance, the relationship level of the stimulus word 'energy' with other stimulus words is very weak at all grade levels.

Bu çalışmada kimya öğretmenlerinin Covid-19 sürecinde derslerinde deneysel çalışmalara yer verip vermedikleri ve yer verilmediyse bunun nedenlerinin derinlemesine incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmaya Türkiye’nin farklı illerinde görev yapan 36 kadın ve 11 erkek olmak üzere toplam 47 kimya öğretmeni katılmıştır. Çalışmada veri toplamak üzere geliştirilen bir Google form veri toplama aracı olarak kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada, çalışma grubunda yer alan öğretmenlerin %64’ünün uzaktan eğitim sürecinde derslerinde deneysel çalışmaya yer vermedikleri ve deneysel çalışmalara yer vermeme nedenlerinin, ortam uygunsuzluğu, öğrenci odaklı nedenler, program odaklı nedenler, sınav odaklı nedenler, kişisel nedenler ve teknik nedenler olmak üzere altı başlık altında toplandığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Öğretmenlerin %72’sinin OGM materyal sitesinde yer alan etkileşimli deney videolarından haberdar oldukları belirlenirken, kimya öğretmenlerinin %66’sının bu deney videolarını inceledikleri belirlenmiştir. Deneyleri inceleyen öğretmenlerin önemli bir kısmı videoları yararlı, öğrenci seviyesine uygun ve öğrenmeye katkı sağlayabilecek olduğunu belirtirken öğretmenlerin az bir kısmı videoların sayısal anlamda yetersiz olduğunu düşündüğü sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Çalışmada ulaşılan diğer bir sonuç, çalışmaya katılan kimya öğretmenlerinin büyük bir kısmının uzaktan eğitim sürecinde deneysel çalışmaları derslerde nasıl kullanacaklarına yönelik bir eğitim almak istedikleri şeklindedir. Çalışma sonunda kimya öğretmenleri için bu tür bir eğitimin nasıl olması gerektiği konusunda ve kimya öğretmen yetiştirilmesine yönelik önerilere yer verilmiştir. Böylece çalışma sonuçları, hem olası bir uzaktan eğitim planlaması durumunda deneysel çalışmalar konusunda neler yapılabileceği hem de laboratuvar imkânı olmayan okullarda görev yapan öğretmenlere yol gösterici olunabilir.

2018 Ortaöğretim Kimya Dersi Öğretim Programında yer alan "Doğa ve Kimya" ünitesi, çevre ilgili sorunlar, sorunların nedenleri ve bu konuların dayandığı kimyasal temellerin öğretildiği bir ünitelerdir. Bu çalışmada, farklı okul türlerine devam eden 10. sınıf öğrencilerinin "Doğa ve Kimya" ünitesinin öğretilmesinden sonra suyun hayat için önemi, çevre kirliliği ve çevre kirliliğinin azaltılması için alınması gereken önlemler ile ilgili kavramalarının belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışma grubu 2019-2020 eğitim-öğretim yılında 10. sınıfa devam eden 421 öğrenciden (221 kadın ve 200 erkek) oluşmaktadır. Veriler, 25 çoktan seçmeli soru ve 4 faktörden oluşan "Doğa ve Kimya Ünitesi Başarı Testi” kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Çalışmada, suyun önemini, su tasarrufu ve su kaynakları ile ilgili konularda öğrencilerin kavramaları yüksek düzeydeyken; yumuşak su, suyun özellikleri ve endüstride su kullanımı gibi daha fazla kimya bilgisi gerektiren konularda öğrenci kavramalarının daha düşük olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Çalışmada ulaşılan diğer bir sonuç, öğrencilerin küresel ısınmaya neden olan gazları tam olarak kavramadıkları ve bu gazları asit yağmuruna neden olan gazlardan tam olarak ayırt edemedikleridir. Son olarak, çevre sorunları için geliştirilen çözüm yollarından en etkili olanı insanların bu sorunlar hakkında bilinçlendirilmesi olacağından, bunun sağlanması için nitelikli bir çevre dersine ortaöğretim programında ayrı bir ders olarak yer verilmesi önerisinde bulunulmuştur.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the views and experiences of the prospective chemistry teachers (PCTs) about the use of graphic organizers (GOs) supported with interactive PowerPoint presentation technology in teaching electrochemistry concepts. Ten GOs were developed and a pair of slides for all of them which contains partial and complete versions of the GOs was constructed. Participants of this study consisted of two different study groups. The preliminary trial of the study was carried out with four senior PCTs who have previously taken both an Electrochemistry course and an elective course concerning graphic organizers. Data from the first group of the study were collected by semi-structured interview and the experiences of the first group regarding the difficulties experienced during traditional electrochemistry teaching (didactic lecture) were examined. The second study group was eight PCTs who were in the fifth semester and were taking the Electrochemistry course while the study was being undertaken. In the last three weeks of the Electrochemistry course in the second study group, the course was taught with GOs supported with interactive PowerPoint presentation technology, and then the views of them were taken by a written opinion form. At the end of the study, three themes emerged regarding the experiences of the PCTs for the traditionally taught electrochemistry course. These are "difficulties", "inadequacy", and "not being beneficial". It was also concluded that the PCTs thought that the use of GOs supported with interactive PowerPoint presentation technology in teaching electrochemistry could enhance the comprehension and motivation of students.

This study aims to examine to what extent the goal of the 2018 Chemistry Curriculum for experimental studies overlaps with the acquisitions of the curriculum and to what extent upper-secondary school chemistry textbooks (high school) are prepared to meet this purpose. The study also seeks to assess the extent to which the activities in the chemistry textbooks are written to meet the four dimensions (gaining data by experimenting, inferring using data, interpretation, and generalization) of the 2018 Chemistry Curriculum. Finally, it is intended to compare this situation with the 2018 Science High School Chemistry Curriculum and determine the similarities and differences. For these purposes, the acquisitions including the experimental studies in the 2018 Chemistry Curriculum were determined at first. Then, the experiments in the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th-grade chemistry textbooks were analyzed. Two ways were used for textbook analysis. In the first stage, it was defined to what extent the acquisitions in the 2018 Chemistry Curriculum and the experiments in the textbooks overlapped and how the experiments were distributed according to the units. In the second stage, the experiments in the textbooks were analyzed according to the four dimensions of the 2018 Chemistry Curriculum by means of a rubric. it was concluded that the acquisitions that include explanations about experimental studies are approximately 16% of the total acquisitions of the 2018 Chemistry Curriculum. Additionally, as a result of this analysis for SPSs, it is found that the experiments mostly focus on the basic SSBs, and they focus especially on “observation” and “measurement” skills.

Bu araştırmanın odak noktası, kimya öğretmen adaylarının yanlış kavramalar hakkında ne derecede bilgi sahibi olduklarının belirlenmesi ve ardından yanlış kavramalarla birlikte alan eğitimi bilgilerinin (AEB) açıklığa kavuşturulmasıdır. Katılımcılar, on dokuz kimya öğretmen adayıdır. Araştırma, durum çalışması modeli ışığında gerçekleştirilmiştir ve veriler, ders planları ve kırk dakikalık ders anlatımlarının gözlenmesi yoluyla toplanmıştır. Araştırma sonunda katılımcıların konuya ilişkin yanlış kavramaları alan yazın ile uyumlu, kısmen uyumlu ve uyumlu olmayacak şekilde belirleyebildikleri görülmüştür. Olası yanlış kavramaları tespit etmek için sıklıkla açık uçlu soruları tercih ettikleri ve ardından yanlış kavramaları düzeltmek için soru-cevap tekniğini kullandıkları belirlenmiştir. Katılımcıların önceki dönemde yanlış kavramalar ile ilgili bir ders almalarının yanlış kavrama ile ilgili AEB’lerine yansıdığı ancak deneyim ile daha da zenginleşebileceği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

Within the framework of today's programs and teaching approach, it is extremely important to develop students' high-level cognitive skills and teach concepts. This situation also requires students' active participation in the lesson. Using graphic organizers in chemistry textbooks can both increase the active participation of students and contribute to the development of high-level thinking skills. Thus, this study aimed to identify what kinds of graphic organizers were placed in upper-secondary school chemistry textbooks and to determine the purpose of graphic organizer usage and the position of graphic organizers in the textbooks. The study is based on a qualitative research methodology and a document analysis method was used. Four chemistry textbooks, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades were analyzed by taking into account a concept map concerning the classification of graphic organizers as a rubric. At the end of the study, it was found that 55 graphic organizers, 15 in the 9th-grade chemistry textbook, 21 in the 10th-grade chemistry textbook, eight in the 11th-grade chemistry textbook, and 11 in the 12th-grade chemistry textbook were placed in all chemistry textbooks analyzed., Günümüz programları ve öğretim yaklaşımı çerçevesinde öğrencilerin üst düzey bilişsel becerilerinin geliştirilmesi ve kavramların öğretilmesi son derece önemlidir. Bu durum öğrencilerin derse aktif katılımını da gerektirmektedir. Kimya ders kitaplarında grafik düzenleyicilerin kullanılması hem öğrencilerin derse aktif katılımını artırabilir hem de üst düzey düşünme becerilerinin gelişmesine katkı sağlayabilir. Bu çalışmada, ortaöğretim kimya ders kitaplarında ne tür grafik düzenleyicilerin yer aldığını ve bu grafik düzenleyicilerin kullanım amaçları ile ders kitaplardaki yerleşimlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışma nitel araştırma metodolojisine dayalı olup, doküman inceleme yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada 9, 10, 11 ve 12. sınıflar olmak üzere dört kimya ders kitabı, grafik düzenleyicilerin sınıflandırılmasına ilişkin bir kavram haritası dikkate alınarak analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonunda 9. sınıf kimya ders kitabında 15, 10. sınıf kimya ders kitabında 21, 11. sınıf kimya ders kitabında 8 ve 12. sınıf kimya ders kitabında 11 olmak üzere tüm kimya ders kitaplarında toplam 55 grafik düzenleyicinin bulunduğu belirlenmiştir.

In this study, the chemistry test questions in the Basic Proficiency Test (TYT) and Field Qualification Tests (AYT) in the 2019-2021 years were analyzed in terms of the acquisitions of the 2018 Secondary School Chemistry Curriculum and the content validity was evaluated in terms of subject dimension. Within the scope of the study, a total of 60 questions were analyzed, 21 of which were TYT and 39 were AYT. At the end of the study, it was determined that TYT chemistry test questions were mostly prepared from 9th and 10th-grade acquisitions, while AYT chemistry test questions were mostly prepared from 11th and 12th-grade acquisitions. It is seen that the TYT-2019 chemistry test questions cover 11.8% of the 2018 Secondary School Chemistry Curriculum total acquisitions, and the TYT-2020 and TYT-2021 chemistry test questions cover 13.4% and 8.7% of all the program's acquisitions, respectively. It was determined that AYT-2019, AYT-2020 and AYT-2021 chemistry test questions were prepared from 22.0%, 18.1% and 17.3% of the total acquisitions of the 2018 Chemistry Curriculum, respectively. In addition, from the acquisitions of the "Nature and Chemistry" and "Energy Resources and Scientific Developments" units, it was concluded that there were no questions in the chemistry tests of all YKS exams between the 2019-2021 years. It has been determined that the unit in which questions are prepared from the most acquisitions of the AYT-2019 and AYT-2020 exams in the chemistry tests is "Equilibrium in Chemical Reactions"., Bu çalışmada, 2019-2021 yıllarında TYT (Temel Yeterlilik Testi) ve AYT (Alan Yeterlilik Testi) sınavlarında yer alan kimya testi soruları 2018 yılı Ortaöğretim Kimya Dersi Öğretim Programı’nın kazanımları açısından analiz edilmiş ve sınavların kapsam geçerliliğinin konu boyutu açısından değerlendirmesi yapılmıştır. Çalışma kapsamında 21 tanesi TYT ve 39 tanesi AYT olmak üzere toplam 60 soru analiz edilmiştir. Çalışma sonunda TYT kimya testi sorularının büyük oranda 9 ve 10. sınıf kazanımlarından hazırlandığı görülürken, AYT kimya testi sorularının ağırlıklı olarak 11 ve 12. sınıf kazanımlarından hazırlandığı belirlenmiştir. TYT-2019 kimya testi sorularının 2018 yılı Kimya Dersi Öğretim Programı toplam kazanımlarının %11,8’ini, TYT-2020 ve TYT-2021 kimya testi sorularının sırasıyla programın tüm kazanımlarının %13,4’ünü ve %8,7’sini kapsadığı tespit edilmiştir. AYT-2019, AYT-2020 ve AYT-2021 kimya testi sorularının sırasıyla 2018 yılı Kimya Dersi Öğretim Programı toplam kazanımlarının %22,0; %18,1 ve %17,3’ünden hazırlandığı belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca “Doğa ve Kimya”, “Enerji Kaynakları ve Bilimsel Gelişmeler” ünitelerinin kazanımlarından 2019-2021 yılları arasındaki YKS sınavlarının tamamında kimya testlerinde hiçbir soruya yer verilmediği gözlemlenmiştir. AYT-2019 ve AYT-2020 sınavlarının kimya testlerinde en fazla sayıda kazanıma yönelik soru hazırlanan ünitenin “Kimyasal Tepkimelerde Denge” olduğu belirlenmiştir.

Bu çalışmada, Laboratuvar Yönetimi dersi alan kimya öğretmen adaylarının dönem boyunca gerçekleştirdikleri ders anlatımları ışığında dönem sonunda laboratuvarda öğrenmenin sağlanmasında en yararlı, öğretmenin uygulaması açısından en elverişli olduğunu düşündükleri, en fazla tercih edecekleri laboratuvar öğretim strateji ve yaklaşımlarının neler olduğu ve hangi ölçütleri dikkate alarak bu tercihleri yaptıklarının belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışması modeline göre gerçekleştirilen çalışma on üç kimya öğretmen adayı ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Öğretmen adaylarının dönem başlangıcında bir kimya konusunda hazırladıkları ders planında tercih ettikleri öğretim strateji ve yaklaşımları belirlenmiştir. Ardından sunuş, buluş ve problem çözme stratejileri ile Tahmin Et-Gözle-Açıkla (TGA) ve Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) yaklaşımlarına ilişkin görüşleri görüş formu ve yarıyıl sonu sınavı yolu ile belirlenmiştir. Çalışma sonunda öğretmen adaylarının genel olarak tercihlerini uygulamanın kolay oluşuna göre yaptıkları sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Öğretmen adayları tercihlerini yaparken öğrencinin aktif olması, konuya uygun olma, zamanı verimli kullanma, sınıf seviyesine uygunluk ve uygulamanın kolaylığını dikkate aldıkları belirlenmiştir. Dönem sonunda öğretim stratejileri bilgilerinde gelişme olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır., In this research, it was aimed to shed light on the prospective chemistry teachers’ experiences in terms of teaching strategies at the end of the Laboratory Management course. The study carried out according to the case study model with thirteen prospective chemistry teachers. The participants fulfilled a lesson plan twice during the course. In the first plan, they were free in their teaching strategy preferences. In the second plan, the researchers assigned them different teaching strategies, methods, models which were expository, discovery, problem solving, Predict-Observe-Explain (POE), and Science Writing Heuristic (SWH). At the end of the course, their opinions were revealed through an opinion form. In the first plans, the participants just preferred the 5E model, expository, and discovery strategies. After the second lesson plans their preferences evolved. POE was the most preferred one due to its simplest feature. Contrarily expository teaching was the least preferred strategy with its unsuitable nature for laboratory. They perceived that most of them gained enough knowledge and experience after the course. At the end of the Laboratory Management course, it was concluded that the participants’ knowledge of teaching strategies improved. Otherwise, pre-service teachers turn to less risky practices under the influence of their past experiences.

Alan eğitimi bilgisi (AEB), öğretmenlerin bir şeyi öğretme konusunda sahip oldukları bilgidir ve farklı alt bileşenleri bulunmaktadır. Bunlardan biri, bu araştırmanın da odak noktası olan öğretim programı bilgisidir. Bu araştırmanın amacı, deneyimli kimya öğretmenlerinin öğretim programı bilgisini dokuzuncu sınıf kimya dersi öğretim programı bağlamında incelemektir. Araştırma durum çalışması modeline göre tasarlanmış ve katılımcılar farklı öğretim deneyimlerine sahip dört kimya öğretmenidir. Veriler; gözlem, görüşme ve ders planı ile toplanmış ve daha sonra içerik analizine göre analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmanın sonunda, katılımcıların dokuzuncu sınıf kimya dersi öğretim programının felsefesinin kısmen farkında oldukları söylenebilir. Bunların yarısı öğretim programının felsefesinin günlük yaşam ile kimya kavramları arasında bir ilişki kurmak olduğunu, geri kalanı ise kimyaya giriş olarak algıladığını ifade etmiştir. Ek olarak, katılımcıların fiziksel ve kimyasal değişimler (FKD) konusundaki kazanım ve açıklamaları belirlemeleri istendiğinde, sadece bir öğretmenin programda yer alan kazanımı yazdığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Diğer öğretmenlerden ikisi kazanımı programdan almak yerine kendileri yeni bir kazanım yazmışlardır. Son olarak, katılımcıların FKD’nin öğretiminde ders planına yazdıkları kazanım ve açıklamaları ne derece gerçekleştirdikleri incelendiğinde katılımcıların bu kazanım ve açıklamalar ışığında konunun öğretimini gerçekleştirdikleri söylenebilir., Pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) is a teachers’ knowledge about teaching something and has different sub-components. One of them is knowledge of the curriculum which is also the focus of this research. The purpose of this research is to examine the experienced chemistry teachers’ knowledge of curriculum in the context of ninth grade chemistry curriculum. The research was designed according to the case study model and participants were four experienced chemistry teachers with different teaching experiences. Data were collected through observation, interview, and lesson plans and then analyzed according to the content analysis. At the end of the research, it can be said that the participants were partially aware of the philosophy of the ninth-grade chemistry curriculum. Half of them expressed that the aim of the curriculum was establishing a relationship between daily life and chemistry concepts while the rest of them perceived the philosophy as an entrance to chemistry. Additionally, when the participants were asked to determine the acquisitions and explanations of physical and chemical changes (PCC) topic, only one teacher has written the acquisition placed in the chemistry curriculum of the ninth class. Two of the teachers have written an acquisition instead of taking the curriculum into consideration. At last, with the aim of deciding what extent the participants’ teaching of PCC represented the acquisitions which they wrote to the lesson plans, participants were observed. It can be conveniently said that the participants performed in the light of these acquisitions and objectives.

– Bu çalışmada, Fen Lisesi Kimya Dersi Öğretim Programı kazanımları ile Lise Kimya Dersi Öğretim Program kazanımlarının Yenilenmiş Bloom Taksonomisine göre aralarında bir farklılık olup olmadığının ve varsa hangi açılardan farklılık olduğunun belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmada, nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden biri olan doküman incelemesi kullanılmıştır. Fen Lisesi Kimya Dersi kazanımlarının Yenilenmiş Bloom Taksonomisinin bilişsel süreç boyutuna göre dağılımının %44,44’ünün anlamak, %34,08’inin çözümlemek, %8,89’unun uygulamak, %5,19’unun hatırlamak, %3,70’inin değerlendirmek ve %3,70’inin de yaratmak bilişsel süreç boyutlarından oluştuğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Adı geçen programın kazanımları Yenilenmiş Bloom Taksonomisinin bilgi boyutuna göre analiz edildiğinde ise %71,85 ile ağırlıklı dağılımın kavramsal bilgi basamağında olduğu; %13,33 ile işlemsel ve %8,89 ile olgusal bilgi basamaklarındaki kazanımların oldukça az olduğu; %5,93 ile üstbilişsel bilgi basamağındaki kazanımların da çok az olduğu sonucu elde edilmiştir. Adı geçen programın kazanımlarının Kavramsal Bilgi boyutunda yoğunlaştığı görülmektedir. Yeni tasarlanacak ve hazırlanacak programda, işaret edilen yoğunluğun üst düzey bilgi boyutlarına kaydırılması önerilebilir.

Education Information Network (EIN), which is an online social education platform, is one of the components of the FATIH Project. EIN contains the preparation and management of e-content, and e-content of EIN consists of different learning/teaching materials such as lessons, e-books, videos, simulations/animations, questions, experiments. In this study, it was aimed to examine experienced chemistry teachers' usage of EIN chemistry course e-contents in their courses. The sample consisted of 40 (26 female and 14 male) experienced chemistry teachers working in different provinces and different types of secondary schools in Turkey. The data collected with an instrument which contains ten open-ended questions developed by the authors and analyzed through content analysis. In the study, it was found that vocational high school teachers were the teachers who benefited the most from the e-contents of the EBA. It was concluded that vocational high school teachers preferred to use simulation, animation and chemistry experiments, and science high school teachers mostly used test questions. At the end of the study, recommendations were made for the use of EIN e-contents more effectively by the chemistry teachers.

This study aimed to reveal the structure of the chemistry field in the 2018 Science Curriculum and to determine to what extent this structure is the basis for the 2018 Chemistry Curriculum. Thus, in the study in which the document analysis method was used, the current Science Curriculum was analyzed and the units, subjects, and acquisitions related to the field of chemistry in the program were examined. With the examination, it has been tried to determine which units, subjects, and acquisitions of the field of chemistry have associated with other fields and what these associated units, subjects, and acquisitions are. At the end of the study, it was concluded that there were 139 acquisitions in the Science Curriculum which were related to the field of chemistry directly or associated with other fields, and these acquisitions were mostly at the 8th grade and at least the 3rd-grade level. However, it has been understood that the acquisitions in the field of chemistry were mostly associated with physics, biology, astronomy, earth, and environmental sciences. In line with the results obtained, it can be stated that the determination of different fields that have joint subject/concepts with chemistry in the science curriculum and what these joint subject/concepts are, would contribute to education in terms of both preventing misconceptions about basic science concepts and giving ideas to teachers, book writers, researchers, and program developers., Bu araştırmada 2018 yılı Fen Bilimleri Dersi Öğretim Programı’nda kimya alanının yapısının ortaya çıkarılması ve bu yapının 2018 yılı Ortaöğretim Kimya Dersi Öğretim Programı’na ne düzeyde temel oluşturduğunun belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Buradan hareketle doküman analiziyönteminin kullanıldığı araştırmada, güncel Fen Bilimleri Dersi Öğretim Programı analiz edilerek programda yer alan kimya alanına ilişkin ünite, konu ve kazanımlar incelenmiştir. Yapılan inceleme ile kimya alanının diğer hangi alanlarla ortak ünite, konu ve kazanımlara sahip olduğu ve de bu ortak ünite, konu ve kazanımların neler olduğu belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda Fen Bilimleri Dersi Öğretim Programı’nda kimya alanı ile doğrudan ve dolaylı olarak ilişkili toplam 139 kazanım olduğu; bu kazanımların da en çok 8. sınıf, en az 3. sınıf düzeyindeyer aldığı belirlenmiştir. Bununla birlikte kimya alanı ile ilişkili olduğu belirlenen kazanımların büyük ölçüde fizik, biyoloji, astronomi, yer ve çevre bilimleri ile de ilişkili olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar doğrultusunda Fen Bilimleri Dersi Öğretim Programı’nda kimya alanı ile ortak konu/kavramlara sahip farklı alanların ve söz konusu ortak konu/kavramların neler olduğunun belirlenmesinin, hem temel fen kavramlarına dair oluşabilecek yanlış kavramaların önüne geçilebilmesinde hem de öğretmenlere, kitap yazarlarına, araştırmacılara ve program geliştiricilere fikir vermesi açısından eğitim öğretime katkısının olacağı ifade edilebilir.

The aim of this research was analyzing the prospective chemistry teachers’ choices about their orientations in terms of teaching in the chemistry laboratories. The case study model was used, and the participants were 20 prospective chemistry teachers in the last term of the chemistry teaching program. After the data collection via the card sorting activity, the preferences of the participants calculated and presented according to the percentages and frequencies. In light of the findings, the problem-solving orientation was the most selected one in that the participants believed that it was representing their teaching. The acquaintance with problem-solving from the early years may affect their preferences. The participants assigned the exam-oriented scenario into the not representing category more than the other orientations. At last, the participants were unsure about the conceptual based didactic, process, and project-based learning that representing or not representing their teaching. Being time-consuming and student-centred, limited knowledge, limited experiences, previous experiences may shape the prospective chemistry teachers’ preferences about their teaching in the laboratory. In the end, it can be suggested that the participants should experience varying different teaching styles in the undergraduate degree to prevent teaching through the common understandings.

In this study, how high school students (HSSs) perceive radioactivity and radiation was explored. Further, it was of interest to identify the relationship between these HSSs’ perceptions and their creative comparisons about them. Based on a phenomenological research method, this study was conducted with 32 12th grade students attending a high school in Turkey. Two data collection instruments contain two type questions, the description questions and the creative comparison questions were administered separately. In the first question, the students were asked to describe the radioactivity/radiation to determine the students’ perceptions and the phenomenographic analysis was followed to explore students’ perception. In the creative comparison questions, the students were asked to complete the sentences about the concepts radioactivity and radiation such as radiation is like ………. because…….. Content analysis techniques were employed in the analysis of creative comparisons. It was revealed that the HSSs thought about radioactivity/radiation in qualitatively different ways depending on their experiences of phenomena. The HSSs’ perceptions of radioactivity were grouped into three issues coded as “1” decomposition, “2” instability and “3” ray. Their perceptions of radiation were also grouped into four issues coded as “1” ray, “2” energy, “3” matter and “4” wave. The analysis of the data exposed that the students’ creative comparisons about radioactivity and radiation based on the harmful effects of them.

Motivasyon, öğrencilerin bir dersten başarılı olmasında etkili olduğu kadar kişinin hayatına yön vermede de etkili bir faktördür. Motivasyonu ölçmek kadar onun devamlılığını anlamak da önemlidir. Bu nedenle, çalışmada Mesleki ve Teklik Anadolu Liselerinin farklı alanlarına devam eden öğrencilerin kimyaya motivasyon düzeylerinin belirlemesi ve bu motivasyonun yıllara bağlı olarak değişiminin izlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla çalışmada, dört Mesleki ve Teknik Anadolu Lisesinin Bilişim Teknolojileri, Makine Teknolojisi, Sağlık Hizmetleri ve Gıda Teknolojisi alanlarında öğrenim gören öğrencilerin 2017-2018 ve 2019-2020 eğitim öğretim yıllarında kimya motivasyon düzeyleri belirlenerek karşılaştırılmıştır. 10. ve 12. Sınıf için öğrencilerin kimya motivasyon puanları karşılaştırıldığında, her iki sınıf içinde istenen düzeyde olduğu (X ̅=76,8056 ve X ̅=77,0278) ve 12. Sınıfta çok az bir artış olduğu görülmüştür. Ancak bu artışın istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Alanlardaki değişim karşılaştırıldığında, Bilişim Teknolojileri ve Makine Teknolojisi alanlarında öğrenim gören 10. ve 12. Sınıf öğrencilerinin kimya motivasyon puan ortalamalarının yıllara göre düştüğü, Sağlık Hizmetleri ve Gıda Teknolojisi alanlarında öğrenim gören öğrencilerin puan ortalamalarının yıllara göre arttığı belirlenmiştir. Ancak bu artışın istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

Feni ölçme bilgisi, alan eğitimi bilgisinin bir bileşeni olup öğretmenin bir konuda neyi ölçmesi gerektiği ve bunu nasıl ölçmesi gerektiği konusundaki anlayışıdır. Bu araştırmanın amacı, deneyimli dört kimya öğretmeninin fiziksel ve kimyasal değişimler konusu kapsamında feni ölçme bilgisini incelemektir. Nitel olan bu araştırma durum çalışması modeline göre gerçekleştirilmiştir. Katılımcılar, amaçsal örnekleme yöntemlerinden ölçüt örnekleme tekniği kullanılarak belirlenmiştir. Bu noktada ölçüt on beş yıldan fazla mesleki deneyime sahip olma olarak belirlenmiştir. Çalışmada veriler; gözlem, görüşme, ders planı ve sınav soruları ile toplanmış ve içerik analizi ile analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda, kimya dersi öğretim programı öğretmenleri alternatif ölçme tekniklerine yöneltmesine rağmen katılımcıların ölçme bilgilerinin daha çok geleneksel ölçme teknikleri yönünde bulunmuştur. Ek olarak katılımcıların sınavlarda; çoktan seçmeli, doğru-yanlış, çoktan seçmeli olarak soruları kullanmayı tercih ettikleri belirlenmiştir. Bu sonuçlardan hareketle, deneyimli kimya öğretmenlerinin hizmet içi eğitim programları aracılığıyla alternatif ölçme tekniklerinden daha fazla haberdar olmasının sağlanması önerilebilir.&nbsp

Grafik düzenleyiciler, kavramlar arasındaki ilişkileri görsel şekilde sunan öğrenme ve öğretme materyalleridir. Grafik düzenleyicilere ders kitaplarında yer verilmesi bir yandan öğrencinin kitapta sunulan teorik bilgiyi anlamlı bir şekilde öğrenmesine yardımcı olurken diğer yandan konunun kavramları ve önceki konular arasında bağlantı kurulmasına yardım eder. Bu nedene, çalışmada, Ortaokul Fen Bilimleri ders kitaplarında grafik düzenleyicilere ne derece ve hangi amaçla yer verildiğini ve hangi tür grafik düzenleyiciler olduğunun belirlenmesi amaçlamıştır. 2017-2018 Eğitim-Öğretim yılında okutulmakta olan, 5., 6., 7., ve 8. sınıf Fen Bilimleri ders kitapları analiz edilerek, sonuçlar kıyaslanmıştır. Çalışma sonunda incelenen Ortaokul Fen Bilimleri kitabından, 5. sınıf kitabında 17 adet, 6. Sınıf kitabında 8 adet, 7. Sınıf kitabında 12 adet ve 8. sınıf kitabında 8 adet olmak üzere toplam 46 adet grafik düzenleyicinin yer aldığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Çalışmanın son kısmında, Ortaokul Fen Bilimleri derslerinde grafik düzenleyicilerin kullanılması ile ilgili öneriler sunulmuştur. Graphic organizers are learning and teaching materials that present the relationship between concepts in a visual design. The inclusion of graphical organizers in textbooks helps the students to learn the theoretical knowledge presented in the book in a meaningful way, while helping to connect the concepts of the subject and previous topics. For this reason, it was aimed to determine the degree and purpose of graphic organizers placed in secondary school science textbooks. The textbooks of 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade science courses which are being studied in the academic year of 2017-2018 were analyzed and the results were compared in this study. At the end of the study, it was concluded that 46 graphic organizers, 17 in the 5th grade science textbook, 8 in the 6th grade science textbook, 12 in the 7th grade science textbook and 8 in the 8th grade science textbook were used in the secondary school science books examined. At the end of the study, some recommendations for including graphic organizers in secondary school science lessons were presented.

Fiziksel ve kimyasal degismeler arasindaki fark ortaogretim kimya ogrencilerinin ogrenmek zorunda oldugu onemli konulardan birisidir. Her ne kadar konu cogu zaman kolayca anlasilabilecek gibi gorulse de, calismalar her seviyedeki ogrencinin fiziksel ve kimyasal degisimler ile ilgili onemli yanlis kavramalara sahip oldugunu gostermistir. Diger onemli bir nokta da bu yanlis kavramalarin kaynaginin ne oldugudur. Yanlis kavrama kaynaklarindan bir tanesi ogretmenlerin gecmis deneyimleri olabilecegi icin, ogretmenlerin konu ile ilgili goruslerinin incelenmesi yanlis kavramalarin olusumunun engellenmesine yardimci olmada oldukca onemlidir. Bu nedenle calismanin amaci, o rtaogretim kimya ogretmenlerinin fiziksel ve kimyasal degisimler konusunun ogretimi ile ilgili dusuncelerinin belirlenmesidir. Calismanin orneklemini 2014-2015 egitim ogretim yilinda Balikesir il merkezinde yer alan Fen Lisesi ve Anadolu Liselerinde gorev yapan 25 deneyimli kimya ogretmeni olusturmaktadir. Nitel veriler arastirmacilar tarafindan gelistirilen tam yapilandirilmis bir anket ile toplanmis olup verilerin analizi icin icerik analizi yontemi kullanilmistir. Calismada ogretmenlerin, ogrencilerin fiziksel ve kimyasal degisimlerle ilgili yanlis kavramalara sahip olduklarini ve ders kitaplarinin da bu konu ile ilgili yanlis kavramalarin olusumuna neden olabilecegini dusundukleri sonucuna ulasilmistir. Calismanin sonunda fiziksel ve kimyasal degisimler konusunun ogretilmesine yonelik onerilerde bulunulmustur.

Ortaöğretim öğrencilerinin, metalik bağları öğrenmelerinden sonra metalik bağı nasıl tanımladıkları ve bu tanımlamaları sırasında hangi metaforları kullandıkları bu çalışmada araştırılmıştır. Ayrıca öğrencilerin metalik bağı neye benzettiklerine yönelik benzeşimleri de incelenmiştir. Bir proje kapsamında geliştirilen iki aşamalı bir ölçme aracının bu çalışmada sadece metalik bağ ile ilgili kısmına yönelik bulgulara yer verilmiştir. Verileri 184’ü kız ve 113’ü erkek olmak üzere beş farklı liseye devam eden toplam 297 onuncu sınıf öğrencisinden toplanmıştır. Kullanılan ölçek iki aşamalı olup ilk aşamada öğrencilerin algı ve metaforlarını belirlemek için metalik bağı tanımları istenmiştir. İkinci aşamada metalik bağ ile ilgili benzeşimlerini belirlemek amacıyla üzerinde “metalik bağ……. benzer, çünkü…..” yazılı bir soru öğrencilere yöneltilmiştir. Verilerin içerik analizi ile analizi sonucunda, öğrencilerin metalik bağ ile ilgili algılarının altı tema altında ve metaforlarının da altı kavramsal kategoride toplandığı belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin metalik bağı metaller arasında bir bağ olarak algıladıkları çalışmada ulaşılan önemli bir sonuçtur. Öğrenciler tarafından yazılan benzeşimlerin analizi sonucunda, bunların da altı tema altında toplandığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonunda metalik bağ konusunun öğretilmesinde nelere dikkat edilmesi gerektiğine yönelik önerilerde bulunulmuştur., In this study, how secondary school students define metallic bonds after learning metallic bonds, and which metaphors they use during their definitions were investigated. Also, the analogies of the students about the metallic bond are examined. In this study, only findings related to the metallic bond of a two-stage measuring instrument developed within the scope of a project are included. Data were collected from 297 tenth grade students attending five different high schools, 184 girls and 113 boys. The instrument used was two-stage, and in the first stage, the definitions of the metallic bond were asked to determine the students' perception and metaphors. In the second stage, a question containing the statement “metallic bond is like……. because ……” was given to the students to obtain their analogies about the metallic bond. As a result of the content analysis of the data, it was determined that students' perceptions about metallic bond were collected under six themes, and metaphors were collected in six conceptual categories. It is an essential result of the study that students perceive metallic bond like a bond between metals. After the similarities written by the students were analysed, it was decided that the analogies of the students were collected under six themes. At the end of the study, the recommendations were made about what should be considered in teaching metallic bonding.

Bu çalışmada, Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı Talim ve Terbiye Kurulu Başkanlığı’nın 2018 yılında yayınlamış olduğu Ortaöğretim Kimya Dersi Öğretim Programındaki kazanımların Orijinal ve Yeniden Düzenlenmiş Bloom Taksonomilerine göre analizleri yapılmıştır. 9., 10., 11. ve 12. sınıflara yönelik toplam 127 kazanımın bilişsel alan düzeyleri, bilgi boyutları ve bilişsel süreç boyutlarına göre analizi; nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden doküman incelemesi kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yapılan analizler sonucunda öğretim programındaki kazanımların ağırlıklı olarak bilişsel alanın kavrama (%60,63) basamağında olduğu; analiz (%14,17), uygulama (%11,03) ve bilgi (%8,66) basamağındaki kazanımların sayısının az olduğu; sentez (%3,15) ve değerlendirme (%2,36) basamağındakilerin ise oldukça az olduğu belirlenmiştir. Kazanımların bilişsel süreç boyutlarına göre analiz edilmesiyle; kazanımların ağırlıklı olarak anlamak (%46,45) ve çözümlemek (%33,86) basamağında olduğu; uygulamak (%8,66), hatırlamak (%6,3), değerlendirmek (%3,94) basamağında oldukça az olduğu; yaratmak (%0,79) basamağında ise son derece az olduğu bulunmuştur. Diğer yandan, kazanımların ağırlıklı olarak bilgi boyutunun kavramsal (%75,59) basamağında bulunduğu, olgusal (%11,81) ve işlemsel (%8,66) basamağındaki kazanımların oldukça az olduğu; üstbilişsel (%3,94) basamağındaki kazanımların ise çok az olduğu belirlenmiştir. Bu bulgular ışığında, programdaki kazanımların yüksek oranda alt düzey bilişsel alan basamaklarına yönelik olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, 9. Sınıf “Doğa ve Kimya”ünitesi için geçerli ve güvenilir bir başarı testi geliştirilmektir. Bu amaçlailk olarak 2018 yılı Ortaöğretim Kimya Dersi Öğretim Programı kazanımları veders kitapları incelenmiş ve bu kazanımlar dikkate alınarak 53 soru hazırlanmıştır.Oluşturulan soruların içerik kontrolü 2 öğretim üyesi tarafından yapıldıktansonra, kapsam geçerliğini sağlamak için 2 kimya öğretmeni tarafından testincelenmiştir. Uzman görüşleri sonucu soru sayısı 29’a düşürülmüştür. Pilotuygulama, 3 farklı lisede öğrenim gören toplam 181 (89 kız, 92 erkek) 10. Sınıföğrencisi ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu uygulama sonunda Cronbach Alpha 0.889olarak hesaplanmış ve 4 sorunun testten çıkartılmasına karar verilmiştir. Sonhale getirilen “Doğa ve Kimya Ünitesi Başarı Testi”, 10. Sınıf 421öğrenciyeuygulanmıştır. Testin Cronbach Alpha değeri tekrar hesaplanmış ve 0.886 olarakbelirlenmiştir. Faktör analiz sonucunda, testin 4 faktörden oluştuğu ve her birfaktöre ait Cronbach Alpha değerlerinin sırayla 0.61 ile0.76 arasında olduğu belirlenmiştir., Thisstudy aims to develop a valid and reliable achievement test concerning Unit of“Nature and Chemistry” for the 9th grade. For this purpose, the 2018 SecondarySchool Chemistry Curriculum and textbooks were examined, and 53 questions wereprepared by taking into consideration these acquisitions. After the questionswere reviewed by two faculty members, the test was examined by two chemistryteachers to provide content validity. Based on the expert opinions, the numberof questions was reduced to 29. The pilot study was carried out with 181 (89female, 92 male) 10th-grade students attending three different high schools. Atthe end of this application, Cronbach's Alpha was calculated as 0.889, and itwas decided to remove the four questions from the test. “Nature and ChemistryUnit Achievement Test” developed was applied to 421 students. Cronbach Alphawas re-calculated as 0.886. As a result of the factor analysis, it wasdetermined that the test consisted of 4 factors and Cronbach Alpha values ofeach factor were between 0.61 and 0.76, respectively.

In this study, how prospective chemistry teachers (PCTs) perceive precipitation and conceptualize precipitation reactions at the symbolic level was explored. Further, it was of interest to identify PCTs’ visualization of the sub-microscopic level of precipitation reactions. The sample was drawn from the Chemistry Education Department at the Education Faculty of a Turkish Public University. A total of 46 PCTs (10 in the 4th semester, 15 in the 6th semester, and 21 in the 8th semester) participated in the study. The data were collected using an instrument with three open-ended questions developed by the authors and with interviews. It was revealed that the PCTs thought about precipitation in qualitatively different ways depending on their practices of phenomena. The PCTs’ perceptions of precipitation were grouped into three issues coded as (1) reacting two salt solutions, (2) undissolved solid and (3) residue. It was found that half of the PCTs (24 of the 46 PCTs) did not use state symbols when writing the precipitation equations and more than half of them included the molecular dissolution features in their drawings. It was suggested that instruction should be to address incorporating a relation between the sub-microscopic, symbolic and macroscopic levels by using the animations.

Graphic organizers are teaching and learning tools that show organization of concepts as well as relationships between them into a visual format. The purpose of this study is to show why graphic organizers are important teaching and learning tools, how graphic organizers help students comprehend knowledge and establish relationship among concepts, and how they can be prepared and used in Science and Technology courses. For this purpose, twelve graphic organizers have been prepared for selected topics placed in 6 th , 7 th , and 8 th grade. After then, the use of graphic organizers during teaching duration and their effectiveness in improving learning outcomes have been explained. The graphic organizers prepared in this study are semantic future analysis, pyramid, flow diagram, comparison contrast matrix, spider web, mind map, fishbone, miniature painting, positive and negative-interest diagram, word mapping, persuade map, cause -effect diagram.

Nuclear science has uses and applications that are relevant and crucial for world peace and sustainable development, so knowledge of its basic concepts and topics should constitute an integral part of civic scientific literacy. We have used two newspaper articles that deal with uses of nuclear science that are directly relevant to life, society, economy, and international politics. One article discusses a new thermonuclear reactor, and the second one is about depleted uranium and its danger for health. 189 first-year undergraduate physics and primary education Greek students were given one of the two articles each, and asked to answer a number of accompanying questions dealing with knowledge that is part of the Greek high school curriculum. The study was repeated with 272 first-year undergraduate physics, physics education, science education, and primary education Turkish students. Acceptable or partially acceptable answers were provided on average by around 20 % of Greek and 11 % of Turkish students, while a large proportion (on the average, around 50 % of Greek and 27 % of Turkish students) abstained from answering the questions. These findings are disappointing, but should be seen in the light of the limited or no coverage of the relevant learning material in the Greek and the Turkish high-school programs. Student conceptual difficulties, misconceptions and implications for research and high school curricula are discussed. Science & Education

Previous research has reported that students commonly develop alternative conceptions in the core topic of chemical bonding. Research in England has reported that students there commonly demonstrate an alternative 'molecular' conceptual framework for thinking about ionic bonding: in terms of the formation of molecule-like ions pairs through electron transfer, which are internally bonded, but not bonded to other ions. The present study reports the use of translated versions of a diagnostic instrument to elicit the conceptions of bonding in NaCl (commonly used as the teaching example of an ionic compound) from two samples of students setting out on university courses in Greece and Turkey. The study reports that students in these two contexts displayed high levels of support for statements based upon the alternative conceptual framework identified in the English context. Students commonly develop similar alternative conceptions of ionic bonding in these three different educational contexts. The study also found some quite large differences in the specific response patterns across these three contexts, some of which could reflect specific features of the different curriculum contexts. The study reinforces the cross-national nature of the challenge of effectively teaching the abstract models of chemistry at the submicroscopic level. It also provides intriguing suggestions that a close study of the interactions between specific curriculum contexts and specific patterns in students' thinking offers much potential for identifying particular aspects of subject pedagogy that either support or impede the learning of accepted scientific models. This study presents the results of an analysis of high school chemistry textbooks and teacher-generated questions about gas laws. The materials that were analyzed consisted of 456 questions about gas laws found in seven grade 10 chemistry textbooks and 264 teacher-generated examination questions prepared by seven chemistry teachers from three schools. These questions were classified into three categories (recall, algorithmic, and conceptual); the conceptual questions (ConQ) were further classified into six subcategories (particulate, demonstration, tiered, laboratory, analogy, and series completion) using the descriptions provided on the Conceptual Questions and Challenge Problems website. The findings indicate that most of the textbook questions were algorithmic and that these textbooks were less likely to facilitate or encourage student comprehension of the properties and behaviors of gases or gas law theories. Furthermore, most of the textbook questions do not enable students to develop conceptual understanding and gain higher-order cognitive skills. Although the findings imply that most of the teacher-generated questions were ConQ, the large majority were partially conceptual type questions. The major implication of this research is the need for teachers, textbook writers, and academics to consider question types when creating questions or analyzing chemistry questions at all educational levels.

Determining students’ knowledge structure is important for assessing what a learner knows about a domain of knowledge. Traditional assessment methods are not always appropriate for exploring students’ knowledge structure and changes during the learning period. This study investigates how the existing knowledge structure of the learners interacts with content knowledge to produce a new knowledge structure relating to atomic theories, and whether a word association test (WAT) could be used to assess changes in students’ knowledge structure. Participants’ (40 elementary science education minors enrolled in a general chemistry class) knowledge structure was examined using WAT before and following a unit of instruction on atomic theories. In order to map the structures, relatedness coefficient values and response frequencies were used. When the maps obtained from these methods were examined it was seen that both had limitations. For this reason a new/different mapping technique was developed and used. It showed that the differences in the students’ knowledge structures before and after instruction make it clear that instruction had affected the knowledge structure.

The research described in this paper is an investigation into the conceptions held about atomic orbitals, hybridization and related concepts by prospective chemistry teachers. The research was carried out with the participation of a total of 167 undergraduate students from two faculties of Balikesir University in Turkey. The subjects completed a diagnostic test by responding, in writing, to open-ended and multiple-choice questions about atomic orbitals and hybridization. Students’ responses and explanations were analysed, and response categories were established. The results indicated that students in the field of chemistry had some misconceptions about atomic orbitals, hybridization and some other concepts related to hybridization. The atomic orbital concept is one of the most important pre-requisite concepts in learning about hybridization. The effects of understanding the atomic orbital concept in learning about hybridization were also investigated. Finally, some suggestions were made for a more effective teaching approach to ensure better learning of the topic. [Chem. Educ. Res. Pract.: 2003, 4, 171-188]

Bu çalışmada, 9., 10., 11. ve 12. sınıf kimya ders kitaplarında yer alan grafiklerin ve grafiklerle ilgili aktivitelerin grafik çizme, okuma ve yorumlama becerilerine yönelik katkısını niceliksel olarak değerlendirebilme amaçlanmıştır. Veri toplama yöntemi olarak, belgesel tarama yönteminin kullanıldığı çalışmada 9., 10., 11. ve 12. sınıf kimya ders kitaplarında (i) konu anlatımı amaçlı ve ölçme-değerlendirme amaçlı sunulan grafiklerin sayılarını, (ii) ölçme-değerlendirme ve etkinlik/deney aktivitelerinde öğrenciler tarafından çizilmesi beklenen grafiklerin sayılarını ve (iii) grafik okumayı ve yorumlamayı gerektiren çoktan seçmeli ve açık uçlu soru sayılarını dikkate alarak ünite ve bölümlere göre de dağılımını belirleyen değerlendirme kategorileri oluşturulmuştur. Çalışma sonunda, kimya ders kitaplarında hazır halde sunulan grafiklerin ölçme ve değerlendirme amacından çok konu anlatımı amacıyla kullanıldığı, ölçme ve değerlendirme amaçlı kullanımlarının yetersiz kaldığı belirlenmiştir. Kitabın etkinlik/deney ve ölçme-değerlendirme aktivitelerinde öğrenciler tarafından çizilmesi istenen grafik sayısının son derece az olduğu, grafik okuma ve yorumlama gerektiren soru türü olarak daha çok açık uçlu sorulara yer verildiği belirlenmiştir. Çalışmada sonunda, ders kitaplarında grafiklerin kullanılmasına yönelik önerilere yer verilmiştir., This study aims to quantitatively evaluate the contributions of the graphs and graph-related activities in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade chemistry textbooks to graph drawing, reading, and interpreting skills. In this study, documental survey analysis was used as the data collection method and assessment categories determining the distribution for units and sections were formed by considering (i) the number of graphs that were presented for instruction, measurement and assessment; (ii) the number of graphs required to be drawn by students in activities of assessment-evaluation, experiments; and (iii) the number of multiple-choice and open-ended questions requiring graph-reading and graph-interpreting in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade chemistry textbooks. By the end of the study, it was found that graphs already provided in chemistry textbooks are used mostly for the purpose of instruction rather than assessment and evaluation and that their usage for evaluation and assessment is inadequate. It was also discovered that the number of graphs students are required to draw in assessment and evaluation activities was significantly low and that as the type of questions that require graph-reading and interpreting, open-ended questions were more often given. At the completion of the study, some suggestions were given, regarding the use of graphs in textbooks.

Nakiboğlu, Canan (Balikesir Author), Grafik düzenleyiciler, kavramlar ve kavramlar arasındaki ilişkileri görsel bir formatta sunan öğretme ve öğrenme araçlarıdır. Ders kitaplarında grafik düzenleyici kullanımı hem öğrencinin kitapta sunulan teorileri anlamlı bir şekilde öğrenmesine hem de konunun kavramları arasında bağlantı kurmasına yardım eder. Bundan dolayı bu çalışma, Orta öğretim Fizik ders kitaplarında grafik düzenleyicilere ne derece yer verildiğini ve var olan grafik düzenleyicilerin hangi tür grafik düzenleyiciler olduğunu belirlemeyi amaçlamıştır. İlk olarak grafik düzenleyicilerin sınıflandırılmasına yönelik bir kavram haritası geliştirilmiştir. Daha sonra MEB Talim Terbiye Kurulu tarafından onaylanmış 4 adet Fizik ders kitabı (9, 10, 11 ve 12. sınıf), hazırlanan kavram haritası dikkate alınarak analiz edilmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda dört kitapta toplam 42 adet grafik düzenleyicinin yer aldığı belirlenmiştir. Son kısımda, fizik derslerinde grafik düzenleyicilerin kullanılması ile ilgili önerilerde bulunulmuştur., Graphic organizers are teaching and learning tools that show organization of concepts as well as relationships between them into a visual format. The use of graphic organizers in the textbooks helps students not only understand the theories presented in the text meaningfully and but also construct the relationships among the concepts of the topic. In this regard, this study aimed to determine how often the graphic organizers were placed in high school physics textbooks, and what kinds of graphic organizers were placed in these textbooks. A concept map concerning the classification of graphic organizers was developed firstly. Then, four physics textbooks, 9 th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, certificated by the Board of Education and Training were analysed by taking into account the concept map prepared. It was found that a total of 42 graphic organizers were placed in all textbooks. Finally, some recommendations for incorporating graphic organizers in physics classes were noted.

Bu çalışmada, kimya öğretmenleri ve kimya öğretmen adaylarının kimya derslerinde kullandıkları argümantasyon süreçlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmaya, amaçlı örnekleme yöntemlerinden kolay ulaşılabilir durum örneklemesi tekniğine göre seçilen dört kimya öğretmeni ve dört kimya öğretmen adayı katılmıştır. Çalışma, nitel bir araştırma yöntemi ile yürütülmüştür. Katılımcılara kimya sınıflarında argümantasyona dayalı derslerin nasıl gerçekleştirilebileceğini öğretmek için bir workshop programı gerçekleştirilmiştir. Katılımcıların gerçekleştirdiği kimya dersleri hem videoya kaydedilmiş hem de araştırmacılardan biri tarafından gözlenmiştir. Katılımcıların gerçekleştirdikleri kimya derslerinde hangi argümantasyon süreçlerini kullandıklarını gözlemlemek amacıyla, Simon, Erduran ve Osborne (2006) tarafından geliştirilen “Argümantasyon süreçlerinin kodlanması” isimli gözlem formu kullanılmıştır. Betimsel analiz sonucunda, katılımcıların öğrencileri argümantasyon sürecine katmak için hangi süreçleri kullandıkları ve bu süreçlere onları katmak için nasıl teşvik ettikleri belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen bulgulara göre, katılımcıların derslerinde "Argümanın tanımını bilme", "Konuşma ve dinleme" ve “Kanıtla doğruluğunu haklı çıkarma” süreçleriyle ilgili davranışları daha çok sergiledikleri ancak “Rol oynama ile tartışmaya teşvik etme” ve “Argümantasyon sürecini yansıtmaya” yönelik herhangi bir davranışta bulunmadıkları sonucuna ulaşılmıştır., In this study, it was aimed to determine argumentation processes used by chemistry teachers and pre-service chemistry teachers in their lessons. Four chemistry and pre-service chemistry teachers were chosen to attend the study with the easily accessible state sampling technique which is one of the intentional sampling techniques. The study was conducted based on qualitative research method. A workshop program was carried out to teach the participants how to perform argumentation-based lessons in chemistry classes. Chemistry lessons taught by the participants were both recorded by a video camera and observed by one of the researchers. In order to observe which argumentation processes were used by participants in these lessons, the observation form, called as “coding of Argumentation processes” and developed by Simon, Erduran and Osborne (2006) was used. As a result of the descriptive analysis, which processes the participants used and how they encouraged students to include in argumentation processes were determined. According to the findings, it was concluded that participants exhibited more behaviors related to processes such as "Knowing the definition of Argument", "Talking and Listening" and “Justifying with Evidence” in their lessons but they didn’t show any behaviors related to the processes such as “Encouraging Debate through Role Play” and “Reflecting on Argumentation Process”.

Introducing the atom concept in secondary education is problematic from a number of perspectives. For one thing, the concept itself is rather complex (having shifted significantly since its initial historical introduction) and is modelled in a variety of not entirely consistent forms. It is also an entity that is not available to direct perceptions and so is outside the direct experience of learners. The nature of the atom as key concept in learning about chemistry in school science has also been questioned. School teachers are charged with ‘making the unfamiliar familiar’ for learners, and when an unfamiliar concept cannot be demonstrated directly to a class, the teacher introduces it by comparison with what is already within students’ experience. One way of doing this is the teaching analogy, and in the case of the atom, a common teaching analogy is that ‘the atom is like a tiny solar system’. Whilst this comparison has merit, it relies on students having sound knowledge of the structure of the solar system and being able to distinguish positive and negative aspects of the analogy: both assumptions that may be unfounded with many students. A diagnostic instrument designed to test out student understanding of the (planetary model of the) atomic system and the solar system was published as part of a project sponsored by the UK’s Royal Society of Chemistry. In the present study a translated version of that instrument was administered to 458 15–18-year-olds in Turkish schools. It was found that there were strong parallels in the patterns of responses for the two systems, but that only a minority of the students could give an adequate characterisation of the type of forces operating in either system, and only a minority acknowledged that a force between two bodies acts with equal magnitude on both bodies (Newton’s third law – implied in both Coulomb’s law and the universal law of gravity). Examples of student comments, illustrating their thinking, are considered, and the implications for teaching (and in particular the use of the teaching analogy) are discussed.

Nakiboğlu, Canan (Balıkesir Author), Some prerequisite concepts for learning nuclear chemistry are chemistry fundamentals. Concepts associated with nuclear science are prevalent throughout the science curricula at all levels of elementary and secondary education in Turkey. Turkish high school chemistry textbooks have been investigated to ascertain whether they contained statements that could lead to students' misconceptions or learning difficulties. Based from the results in the diagnostic test conducted among the Turkish high school students, one misconception discovered indicates that the students are confused about atomic structure stability and noble gas stability. The second misconception has been about the difference between bonding in molecules and the binding energy in a nucleus. Other misconceptions of the Turkish high school students have included topics related to half-life, practical applications of nuclear chemistry and radioactive decay rate. Two obstacles to effective learning are the concepts and topics related to nuclear chemistry are quite abstract and the lack of prerequisite knowledge.
