Search

In some metals containing a sub-lattice of rare earth or actinide ions, free local $f$ spins at high temperatures dissolve into the sea of quantum conduction electrons at low temperatures, where they become mobile excitations. Once mobile, the spins acquire charge, forming electrons of heavy mass, known as heavy fermions. In turn, the incorporation of heavy charges into the conduction sea leads to an increase in the volume of the Fermi surface. This process, called Kondo scattering, is accompanied by a dramatic, temperature dependent transformation of the electronic interactions and masses. Since the Kondo phenomena is controlled by quantum fluctuations, here we ask, at which point does the Fermi surface change character? A priori, the answer is not clear, since near its onset, the Kondo effect cannot be described as a simple hybridization of electronic eigenstates. Conventional descriptions of this Kondo scattering process consider that hybridization, Fermi volume change, and $f$-electron mobility occur simultaneously. However, using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to measure the evolution of excitations, we find that the changes of the Fermi surface emerge at temperatures an order of magnitude higher than the opening of the hybridization gap, and two orders of magnitude higher than the onset of the coherent character of the $f$-electrons. We suggest that the large changes in Fermi volume, driven by electronic fluctuations, occur at temperatures where the various $\Gamma_x \to \Gamma_y$ crystal field-split $f$ levels become accessible to conduction states of the corresponding symmetries. There are several ways to turn a superconductor into a normal conductor: increase the temperature, apply a high magnetic field, or run a large current. High-T$_c$ cuprate superconductors are unusual in the sense that experiments suggest that destroying superconductivity by heating the sample to temperatures above T$_c$ or by applying a high magnetic field result in different 'normal' states. Spectroscopic probes show that above T$_c$, in the pseudogap regime, the Fermi surface is partly gapped and there are no well-defined quasiparticles. Transport measurements, on the contrary, reveal quantum oscillations in high magnetic fields and at low temperatures, suggesting a more usual Fermi liquid state. Studying the electronic structure while suppressing superconductivity by using current, will hopefully shed new light on this problem. In type II superconductors, such as the cuprates, the resistive state created by the current is a result of vortex motion. The large dissipation in the flux-flow regime makes spectroscopic measurements in the presence of current challenging. We performed angle-resolved photoemission experiments in thin films of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_y$ while running high-density current through the samples. Clear evidence was found for non-uniform flux flow, leaving most of the sample volume free of mobile vortices and dissipation. The super-current changes the electronic spectrum, creating quasiparticle and quasihole pockets. The size of these pockets as a function of the current is found to be doping dependent; it depends both on the superfluid stiffness and on the strength of interactions.

The loss of single-particle coherence going from the superconducting state to the normal state in underdoped cuprates is a dramatic effect that has yet to be understood. Here, we address this issue by performing angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements in the presence of a transport current. We find that the loss of coherence is associated with the development of an onset in the resistance, in that well before the midpoint of the transition is reached, the sharp peaks in the ARPES spectra are completely suppressed. Since the resistance onset is a signature of phase fluctuations, this implies that the loss of single-particle coherence is connected with the loss of long-range phase coherence., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

A charge-density wave (CDW) state has a broken symmetry described by a complex order parameter with an amplitude and a phase. The conventional view, based on clean, weak-coupling systems, is that a finite amplitude and long-range phase coherence set in simultaneously at the CDW transition temperature T$_{cdw}$. Here we investigate, using photoemission, X-ray scattering and scanning tunneling microscopy, the canonical CDW compound 2H-NbSe$_2$ intercalated with Mn and Co, and show that the conventional view is untenable. We find that, either at high temperature or at large intercalation, CDW order becomes short-ranged with a well-defined amplitude that impacts the electronic dispersion, giving rise to an energy gap. The phase transition at T$_{cdw}$ marks the onset of long-range order with global phase coherence, leading to sharp electronic excitations. Our observations emphasize the importance of phase fluctuations in strongly coupled CDW systems and provide insights into the significance of phase incoherence in `pseudogap' states., Comment: main manuscript plus supplementary information

One of the most intriguing aspects of cuprates is a large pseudogap coexisting with a high superconducting transition temperature. Here, we study pairing in the cuprates from electron-electron interactions by constructing the pair vertex using spectral functions derived from angle resolved photoemission data for a near optimal doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ sample that has a pronounced pseudogap. Assuming that that the pseudogap is {\it not} due to pairing, we find that the superconducting instability is strongly suppressed, in stark contrast to what is actually observed. Using an analytic approximation for the spectral functions, we can trace this suppression to the destruction of the BCS logarithmic singularity from a combination of the pseudogap and lifetime broadening. Our findings strongly support those theories of the cuprates where the pseudogap is instead due to pairing.

The energy gap for electronic excitations is one of the most important characteristics of the superconducting state, as it directly refects the pairing of electrons. In the copper-oxide high temperature superconductors (HTSCs), a strongly anisotropic energy gap, which vanishes along high symmetry directions, is a clear manifestation of the d-wave symmetry of the pairing. There is, however, a dramatic change in the form of the gap anisotropy with reduced carrier concentration (underdoping). Although the vanishing of the gap along the diagonal to the square Cu-O bond directions is robust, the doping dependence of the large gap along the Cu-O directions suggests that its origin might be different from pairing. It is thus tempting to associate the large gap with a second order parameter distinct from superconductivity. We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to show that the two-gap behavior, and the destruction of well defined electronic excitations, are not universal features of HTSCs, and depend sensitively on how the underdoped materials are prepared. Depending on cation substitution, underdoped samples either show two-gap behavior or not. In contrast, many other characteristics of HTSCs, such as the domelike dependence of Tc on doping, long-lived excitations along the diagonals to the Cu-O bonds, energy gap at the antinode (crossing of the underlying Fermi surface and the (pi, 0)-(pi, pi) line) decreasing monotonically with doping, while persisting above Tc (the pseudogap), are present in all samples, irrespective of whether they exhibit two-gap behavior or not. Our results imply that universal aspects of high Tc superconductivity are relatively insensitive to differences in the electronic states along the Cu-O bond directions., Comment: Accepted for publication at PNAS

In order to understand the origin of high-temperature superconductivity in copper oxides, we must understand the normal state from which it emerges. Here, we examine the evolution of the normal state electronic excitations with temperature and carrier concentration in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 using angle-resolved photoemission. In contrast to conventional superconductors, where there is a single temperature scale Tc separating the normal from the superconducting state, the high- temperature superconductors exhibit two additional temperature scales. One is the pseudogap scale T*, below which electronic excitations exhibit an energy gap. The second is the coherence scale Tcoh, below which sharp spectral features appear due to increased lifetime of the excitations. We find that T* and Tcoh are strongly doping dependent and cross each other near optimal doping. Comment on "Circular Dichroism in the Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectrum of the High-Temperature Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 Superconductor: Can These Measurements Be Interpreted as Evidence for Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking?", Comment: 1 page

We use angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to probe the electronic excitations of the non-superconducting state that exists between the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at zero doping and the superconducting state at larger dopings in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta}. We find that this state is a nodal liquid whose excitation gap becomes zero only at points in momentum space. Despite exhibiting a resistivity characteristic of an insulator and the absence of coherent quasiparticle peaks, this material has the same gap structure as the d-wave superconductor. We observe a smooth evolution of the spectrum across the insulator-to-superconductor transition, which suggests that high temperature superconductivity emerges when quantum phase coherence is established in a non-superconducting nodal liquid., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

Angle-resolved photoemission on underdoped La$_{1.895}$Sr$_{0.105}$CuO$_4$ reveals that in the pseudogap phase, the dispersion has two branches located above and below the Fermi level with a minimum at the Fermi momentum. This is characteristic of the Bogoliubov dispersion in the superconducting state. We also observe that the superconducting and pseudogaps have the same d-wave form with the same amplitude. Our observations provide direct evidence for preformed Cooper pairs, implying that the pseudogap phase is a precursor to superconductivity.

We report temperature- and magnetic field-dependent bulk muon spin rotation measurements in a c-axis oriented superconductor CaC6 in the mixed state. Using both a simple second moment analysis and the more precise analytical Ginzburg-Landau model, we obtained a field independent in-plane magnetic penetration depth {\lambda}ab (0) = 72(3) nm. The temperature dependencies of the normalized muon spin relaxation rate and of the normalized superfluid density result to be identical, and both are well represented by the clean limit BCS model with 2\Delta/kB Tc = 3.6(1), suggesting that CaC6 is a fully gapped BCS superconductor in the clean limit regime., Comment: Accepted for publication in PRB

In the underdoped high temperature superconductors, instead of a complete Fermi surface above Tc, only disconnected Fermi arcs appear, separated by regions that still exhibit an energy gap. We show that in this pseudogap phase, the energy-momentum relation of electronic excitations near E_F behaves like the dispersion of a normal metal on the Fermi arcs, but like that of a superconductor in the gapped regions. We argue that this dichotomy in the dispersion is hard to reconcile with a competing order parameter, but is consistent with pairing without condensation.

Angle resolved photoemission on underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 reveals that the magnitude and d-wave anisotropy of the superconducting state energy gap are independent of temperature all the way up to Tc. This lack of T variation of the entire k-dependent gap is in marked contrast to mean field theory. At Tc the point nodes of the d-wave gap abruptly expand into finite length ``Fermi arcs''. This change occurs within the width of the resistive transition, and thus the Fermi arcs are not simply thermally broadened nodes but rather a unique signature of the pseudogap phase., Comment: Accepted by Phys. We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data on moderately underdoped La$_{1.855}$Sr$_{0.145}$CuO$_4$ at temperatures below and above the superconducting transition temperature. Unlike previous studies of this material, we observe sharp spectral peaks along the entire underlying Fermi surface in the superconducting state. These peaks trace out an energy gap that follows a simple {\it d}-wave form, with a maximum superconducting gap of 14 meV. Our results are consistent with a single gap picture for the cuprates. Furthermore our data on the even more underdoped sample La$_{1.895}$Sr$_{0.105}$CuO$_4$ also show sharp spectral peaks, even at the antinode, with a maximum superconducting gap of 26 meV., Comment: Accepted by Phys. Angle resolved photoemission data in the pseudogap phase of underdoped cuprates have revealed the presence of a truncated Fermi surface consisting of Fermi arcs. We compare a number of proposed models for the arcs, and find that the one that best models the data is a d-wave energy gap with a lifetime broadening whose temperature dependence is suggestive of fluctuating pairs., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

We find that peaks in the autocorrelation of angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy data of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ in the superconducting state show dispersive behavior for binding energies smaller than the maximum superconducting energy gap. For higher energies, though, a striking anomalous dispersion is observed that is a consequence of the interaction of the electrons with collective excitations. In contrast, in the pseudogap phase, we only observe dispersionless behavior for the autocorrelation peaks. We have performed systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on single-layered cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CuO6 to elucidate the origin of shadow band. We found that the shadow band is exactly the c(2x2) replica of the main band irrespective of the carrier concentration and its intensity is invariable with respect to temperature, doping, and substitution constituents of block layers. This result rules out the possibility of antiferromagnetic correlation and supports the structural origin of shadow band. ARPES experiments on optimally doped La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 also clarified the existence of the c(2x2) shadow band, demonstrating that the shadow band is not a unique feature of Bi-based cuprates. We introduce a formalism for calculating dynamic response functions using experimental single particle Green's functions derived from angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). As an illustration of this procedure we estimate the dynamic spin response of the cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$. We find good agreement with superconducting state neutron data, in particular the $(\pi,\pi)$ resonance with its unusual `reversed magnon' dispersion. The pseudogap phase in the cuprates is a most unusual state of matter: it is a metal, but its Fermi surface is broken up into disconnected segments known as Fermi arcs. Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the anisotropy of the pseudogap in momentum space and the resulting arcs depend only on the ratio T/T*(x), where T*(x) is the temperature below which the pseudogap first develops at a given hole doping x. In particular, the arcs collapse linearly with T/T* and extrapolate to zero extent as T goes to 0. This suggests that the T = 0 pseudogap state is a nodal liquid, a strange metallic state whose gapless excitations are located only at points in momentum space, just as in a d-wave superconductor., Comment: to appear, Nature Physics (July 2006)

We report the observation of a change in Fermi surface topology of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 with doping. By collecting high statistics ARPES data from moderately and highly overdoped samples and dividing the data by the Fermi function, we answer a long standing question about the Fermi surface shape of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 close to the (pi,0) point. For moderately overdoped samples (Tc=80K) we find that both the bonding and antibonding sheets of the Fermi surface are hole-like. However for a doping level corresponding to Tc=55K we find that the antibonding sheet becomes electron-like. This change does not directly affect the critical temperature and therefore the superconductivity. However, since similar observations of the change of the topology of the Fermi surface were observed in LSCO and Bi2Sr2Cu2O6, it appears to be a generic feature of hole-doped superconductors. Because of bilayer splitting, though, this doping value is considerably lower than that for the single layer materials, which again argues that it is unrelated to Tc.

The autocorrelation of angle resolved photoemission data from the high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d shows distinct peaks in momentum space which disperse with binding energy in the superconducting state, but not in the pseudogap phase. Although it is tempting to attribute a non-dispersive behavior in momentum space to some ordering phenomenon, a de-construction of the autocorrelation reveals that the non-dispersive peaks arise not from ordering, but rather from the tips of the Fermi arcs, which themselves do not change with binding energy., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We examine the momentum and energy dependence of the scattering rate of the high temperature cuprate superconductors using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The scattering rate is of the form a + bw around the Fermi surface for under and optimal doping. The inelastic coefficient "b" is found to be isotropic. The elastic term, "a", however, is found to be highly anisotropic for under and optimally doped samples, with an anisotropy which correlates with that of the pseudogap. This is contrasted with heavily overdoped samples, which show an isotropic scattering rate and an absence of the pseudogap above T_c. One of the interesting features of the photoemission spectra of the high temperature cuprate superconductors is the presence of a large signal (referred to as the "background'') in the unoccupied region of the Brillouin zone. Here we present data indicating that the origin of this signal is extrinsic and is most likely due to strong scattering of the photoelectrons. We also present an analytical method that can be used to subtract the background signal.

The electronic structure of single crystals Na$_{0.6}$CoO$_2$, which are closely related to the superconducting Na$_{0.3}$CoO$_2$.$y$H$_2$O ($T_c \sim 5K$), is studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. While the measured Fermi surface is found to be consistent with the prediction of a local density band theory, the energy dispersion is highly renormalized, with an anisotropy along the two principle axes ($\Gamma$-$K$, $\Gamma$-$M$). Our ARPES result also indicates that an extended flat band is formed slightly above $E_F$ along $\Gamma$-$K$. In addition, an unusual band splitting is observed in the vicinity of the Fermi surface along the $\Gamma$-$M$ direction, which differs from the predicted bilayer splitting., Comment: 4 figures

The recent experiments reported by Borisenko et al. (cond-mat/0305179 v2), are examined in light of the conditions to be satisfied in the search for time-reversal violation by circularly polarized ARPES. Two principal problems are found: (1) A lack of any evidence for the magnitude of the pseudogap or the temperature of its onset in the samples studied. (2) A difference in the dichroic signal at low and high temperatures. The difference is greater than the stated error bars and is contrary to the conclusions reached in the paper., Comment: some typos corrected

In a recent comment [1], Armitage and Hu have suggested that our experiment observing dichroism in angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) [2] could not be conclusively interpreted as arising from time reversal symmetry breaking, arguing that our observations are likely due to structural effects. The concerns expressed by Armitage and Hu that our results could be due to a change in the mirror plane are as important as they are obvious. In fact the first part of their comment merely restates the results of Simon and Varma [3] about the relationship and contrast of effects due to time reversal symmetry breaking and those caused by crystallographic changes. In any test of time reversal symmetry one must ensure that parity alone is not inducing the observed changes. We have indeed considered this issue very carefully in the course of our study [2] and it is precisely the lack of temperature dependent structural changes significant enough to explain the magnitude of the observed dichroism that forced us to conclude that time reversal symmetry breaking is the only plausible explanation. Furthermore, recent experiments by Borisenko, et al. [4] confirm that changes in the mirror plane are unmeasurably small.

Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and resistivity measurements are used to explore the overdoped region of the high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. We find evidence for a new crossover line in the phase diagram between a coherent metal phase for lower temperatures and higher doping, and an incoherent metal phase for higher temperatures and lower doping. The former is characterized by two well-defined spectral peaks in ARPES due to coherent bilayer splitting and superlinear behavior in the resistivity, whereas the latter is characterized by a single broad spectral feature in ARPES and a linear temperature dependence of the resistivity., Comment: 4 pages, revtex4, 5 figures

We review angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) results on the high Tc superconductors, focusing primarily on results obtained on the quasi-two dimensional cuprate Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 and its single layer counterpart Bi2Sr2CuO6. When matter undergoes a phase transition from one state to another, usually a change in symmetry is observed, as some of the symmetries exhibited are said to be spontaneously broken. The superconducting phase transition in the underdoped high-Tc superconductors is rather unusual, in that it is not a mean-field transition as other superconducting transitions are. Instead, it is observed that a pseudo-gap in the electronic excitation spectrum appears at temperatures T* higher than Tc, while phase coherence, and superconductivity, are established at Tc (Refs. 1, 2). One would then wish to understand if T* is just a crossover, controlled by fluctuations in order which will set in at the lower Tc (Refs. 3, 4), or whether some symmetry is spontaneously broken at T* (Refs. 5-10). Here, using angle-resolved photoemission with circularly polarized light, we find that, in the pseudogap state, left-circularly polarized photons give a different photocurrent than right-circularly polarized photons, and therefore the state below T* is rather unusual, in that it breaks time reversal symmetry11. This observation of a phase transition at T* provides the answer to a major mystery of the phase diagram of the cuprates. We demonstrate that the E vs. k dispersion in the superconducting state extracted from momentum distribution curves differs qualitatively from the traditional dispersion extracted from energy distribution curves. This occurs because of a combination of many-body effects and the presence of an energy gap, along with the associated coherence factors. Analysis of such MDC dispersions can give important information on the microscopics of high temperature superconductors., Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 5 encapsulated postscript figures

We report the first inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments of the resonance in the underdoped regime of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d. The energy of the resonance is found to be 34 meV and the temperature dependence shows a smooth evolution through Tc with a remnant persisting in the pseudogap state. Besides the INS data, we present also angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) spectra taken on the same crystals. As a function of temperature, the neutron intensity scales with the square of the ARPES gap estimated by the leading-edge midpoint at (pi,0). We also show that the energy of the collective mode inferred from the peak-dip-hump structure compares well with the energy of the resonance. Based on kinematics, we argue that the correlation of these two energies is consistent with the absence of bilayer splitting in the electronic dispersion., Comment: 5 pages, revtex, 5 encapsulated postscript figures

Recent photoemission data in the high temperature cuprate superconductor Bi2212 have been interpreted in terms of a sharp spectral peak with a temperature independent lifetime, whose weight strongly decreases upon heating. By a detailed analysis of the data, we are able to extract the temperature dependence of the electron self-energy, and demonstrate that this intepretation is misleading. Rather, the spectral peak loses its integrity above Tc due to a large reduction in the electron lifetime., Comment: 5 pages, revtex, 4 encapsulated postscript figures

In conventional superconductors, the pairing energy gap (\Delta) and superconducting phase coherence go hand-in-hand. As the temperature is lowered, both the energy gap and phase coherence appear at the transition temperature T_c. In contrast, in underdoped high-T_c superconductors (HTSCs), a pseudogap appears at a much higher temperature T^*, smoothly evolving into the superconducting gap at T_c. Phase coherence on the other hand is only established at T_c, signaled by the appearance of a sharp quasiparticle (QP) peak in the excitation spectrum. Another important difference between the two types of superconductors is in the ratio of 2\Delta / T_c=R. In BCS theory, R~3.5, is constant. In the HTSCs this ratio varies widely, continuing to increase in the underdoped region, where the gap increases while T_c decreases. Here we report that in HTSCs it is the ratio z_A\Delta_m/T_c which is approximately constant, where \Delta_m is the maximum value of the d-wave gap, and z_A is the weight of the coherent excitations in the spectral function. This is highly unusual, since in nearly all phase transitions, T_c is determined by an energy scale alone. We further show that in the low-temperature limit, z_{\it A} increases monotonically with increasing doping x. The growth is linear, i.e. z_A(x)\propto x, in the underdoped to optimally doped regimes, and slows down in overdoped samples. Angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) data in the superconducting state of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d show a kink in the dispersion along the zone diagonal, which is related via a Kramers-Kronig analysis to a drop in the low-energy scattering rate. As one moves towards (pi,0), this kink evolves into a spectral dip. The occurrence of these anomalies in the dispersion and lineshape throughout the zone indicate the presence of a new energy scale in the superconducting state., Comment: New Figure 3 with expanded discussion

The condensation energy can be shown to be a moment of the change in the occupied part of the spectral function when going from the normal to the superconducting state. As a consequence, there is a one to one correspondence between the energy gain associated with forming the superconducting ground state, and the dramatic changes seen in angle resolved photoemission spectra. If high temperature cuprate superconductivity is due to electronic correlations, then the energy difference between the normal and superconducting states can be expressed in terms of the occupied part of the single particle spectral function. The latter can, in principle, be determined from angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) data. As a consequence, the energy gain driving the development of the superconducting state is intimately related to the dramatic changes in the photoemission lineshape when going below Tc. These points are illustrated in the context of the "mode" model used to fit ARPES data in the normal and superconducting states, where the question of kinetic energy versus potential energy driven superconductivity is explored in detail. We use our findings to comment on the relation of ARPES data to the condensation energy, and to various other experimental data. In particular, our results suggest that the nature of the superconducting transition is strongly related to how anomalous (non Fermi liquid like) the normal state spectral function is, and as such, is dependent upon the doping level., Comment: 10 pages, revtex, 4 encapsulated postscript figures

We study the normal state electronic excitations probed by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in Bi2201 and Bi2212. Our main goal is to establish explicit criteria for determining the Fermi surface from ARPES data on strongly interacting systems where sharply defined quasiparticles do not exist and the dispersion is very weak in parts of the Brillouin zone. Additional complications arise from strong matrix element variations within the zone. We present detailed results as a function of incident photon energy, and show simple experimental tests to distinguish between an intensity drop due to matrix element effects and spectral weight loss due to a Fermi crossing. We reiterate the use of polarization selection rules in disentangling the effect of umklapps due to the BiO superlattice in Bi2212. We conclude that, despite all the complications, the Fermi surface can be determined unambiguously: it is a single large hole barrel centered about (pi,pi) in both materials., Comment: Expanded discussion of symmetrization method in Section 5, figures remain the same

We study the Fermi surface of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) using angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) with a momentum resolution of ~ 0.01 of the Brillouin zone. We show that, contrary to recent suggestions, the Fermi surface is a large hole barrel centered at (pi,pi), independent of the incident photon energy., Comment: 4 pages (revtex), 4 figures (eps, 2 color)

Photoemission spectra of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 reveal that the high energy feature near (pi,0), the "hump", scales with the superconducting gap and persists above Tc in the pseudogap phase. As the doping decreases, the dispersion of the hump increasingly reflects the wavevector (pi,pi) characteristic of the undoped insulator, despite the presence of a large Fermi surface. This can be understood from the interaction of the electrons with a collective mode, supported by our observation that the doping dependence of the resonance observed by neutron scattering is the same as that inferred from our data., Comment: 4 pages (revtex), 5 figures (eps)

Recent improvements in momentum resolution by a factor of 32 lead to qualitatively new ARPES results on the spectra of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) along the (pi,pi) direction, where there is a node in the superconducting gap. With improved resolution, we now see the intrinsic lineshape, which indicates the presence of true quasiparticles at the Fermi momentum in the superconducting state, and lack thereof in the normal state. The region of momentum space probed here is relevant for charge transport, motivating a comparison of our results to conductivity measurements by infrared reflectivity., Comment: revised paper with new figures

Comparing ARPES measurements on Bi2212 with penetration depth data, we show that a description of the nodal excitations of the d-wave superconducting state in terms of non-interacting quasiparticles is inadequate, and we estimate the magnitude and doping dependence of the Landau interaction parameter which renormalizes the linear T contribution to the superfluid density. Furthermore, although consistent with d-wave symmetry, the gap with underdoping cannot be fit by the simple coskx-cosky form, which suggests an increasing importance of long range interactions as the insulator is approached., Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figs, manuscript and Fig. 3 significantly revised

In contrast with the recent photoemission observations by Shen et al. of anomalous temperature-induced momentum-dependent spectral weight transfer in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta}, we find that in the same material, in spite of the unusual spectral lineshape change between superconducting and normal states, the integrated spectral weight displays minimum variation as a function of temperature, which is in agreement with the sum rule of angle-resolved photoemission: the integrated spectral weight is proportional to the momentum density, n(k)., Comment: 3 pages, revtex, 4 postscript figures

In a recent paper Saini et al. have reported evidence for a pseudogap around (pi,0) at room temperature in the optimally doped superconductor Bi2212. This result is in contradiction with previous ARPES measurements. Furthermore they observed at certain points on the Fermi surface hot spots of high spectral intensity which they relate to the existence of stripes in the CuO planes. They also claim to have identified a new electronic band along Gamma-M1 whose one dimensional character provides further evidence for stripes. We demonstrate in this Comment that all the measured features can be simply understood by correctly considering the superstructure (umklapp) and shadow bands which occur in Bi2212., Comment: 1 page, revtex, 1 encapsulated postscript figure (color)

We calculate the photoelectron escape depth in the high temperature superconductor Bi2212 by use of electron energy-loss spectroscopy data. We find that the escape depth is only 3 Ang. for photon energies typically used in angle resolved photoemission measurements. We then use this to estimate the number of inelastic secondaries, and find this to be quite small near the Fermi energy. This implies that the large background seen near the Fermi energy in photoemission measurements is of some other origin., Comment: 2 pages, revtex, 3 encapsulated postscript figures

The self-energy $\Sigma({\bf k},\omega)$, the fundamental function which describes the effects of many-body interactions on an electron in a solid, is usually difficult to obtain directly from experimental data. In this paper, we show that by making certain reasonable assumptions, the self-energy can be directly determined from angle resolved photoemission data. We demonstrate this method on data for the high temperature superconductor $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x}$ (Bi2212) in the normal, superconducting, and pseudogap phases., Comment: expanded version (6 pages), to be published, Phys Rev B (1 Sept 99)

In this paper, we review some of our ARPES results on the superconducting and pseudo gaps in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x. We find that optimally and overdoped samples exhibit a d-wave gap, which closes at the same temperature, Tc, for all k points. In underdoped samples, a leading edge gap is found up to a temperature T* > Tc. We find that T* scales with the maximum low temperature gap, increasing as the doping is reduced. The momentum dependence of the pseudogap is similar to that of the superconducting gap; however, the pseudogap closes at different temperatures for different k points., Comment: 7 pages, revtex, 7 postscript figures, SNS97 proceedings

We introduce a simple phenomenological form for the self-energy which allows us to extract important information from angle resolved photoemission data on the high Tc superconductor Bi2212. First, we find a rapid suppression of the single particle scattering rate below Tc for all doping levels. Second, we find that in the overdoped materials the gap Delta at all k-points on the Fermi surface has significant temperature dependence and vanishes near Tc. In contrast, in the underdoped samples such behavior is found only at k-points close to the diagonal. Near (pi,0), Delta is essentially T-independent in the underdoped samples. The filling-in of the pseudogap with increasing T is described by a broadening proportional to T-Tc, which is naturally explained by pairing correlations above Tc., Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 3 encapsulated postscript figures
