Fast magnetic flux control is a crucial ingredient for circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) systems. So far it has been a challenge to implement this technology with the high coherence 3D cQED architecture. In this paper we control the magnetic field inside a superconducting waveguide cavity using a magnetic hose, which allows fast flux control of 3D transmon qubits on time scales < 100 ns. The hose is designed as an effective microwave filter to not compromise the energy relaxation time of the qubit. 8. Circumventing Magnetic Reciprocity: a Diode for Magnetic Fields

Lorentz reciprocity establishes a stringent relation between electromagnetic fields and their sources. For static magnetic fields, a relation between magnetic sources and fields can be drawn in analogy to the Green's reciprocity principle for electrostatics. Here we theoretically and experimentally show that a linear and isotropic electrically conductive material moving with constant velocity is able to circumvent the magnetic reciprocity principle and realize a diode for magnetic fields. This result is demonstrated by measuring an extremely asymmetric magnetic coupling between two coils that are located near a moving conductor. The possibility to generate controlled unidirectional magnetic couplings breaks down one of the most deeply-established relations in classical electromagnetism, namely that mutual inductances are symmetric. 11. Ultrafocused Electromagnetic Field Pulses with a Hollow Cylindrical Waveguide

We theoretically show that an externally driven dipole placed inside a cylindrical hollow waveguide can generate a train of ultrashort and ultrafocused electromagnetic pulses. The waveguide encloses vacuum with perfect electric conducting walls. A dipole driven by a single short pulse, which is properly engineered to exploit the linear spectral filtering of the cylindrical hollow waveguide, excites longitudinal waveguide modes that are coherently re-focused at some particular instances of time. A dipole driven by a pulse with a lower-bounded temporal width can thus generate, in principle, a finite train of arbitrarily short and focused electromagnetic pulses. We numerically show that such ultrafocused pulses persist outside the cylindrical waveguide at distances comparable to its radius., Comment: 5+2 pages, 3 figures. We theoretically show that a magnet can be stably levitated on top of a punctured superconductor sheet in the Meissner state without applying any external field. The trapping potential created by such induced-only superconducting currents is characterized for magnetic spheres ranging from tens of nanometers to tens of millimeters. Such a diamagnetically levitated magnet is predicted to be extremely well isolated from the environment. We therefore propose to use it as an ultrasensitive force and inertial sensor. A magnetomechanical read-out of its displacement can be performed by using superconducting quantum interference devices. An analysis using current technology shows that force and acceleration sensitivities on the order of $10^{-23}\text{N}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ (for a 100 nm magnet) and $10^{-14}g/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ (for a 10 mm magnet) might be within reach in a cryogenic environment. Such unprecedented sensitivities can be used for a variety of purposes, from designing ultra-sensitive inertial sensors for technological applications (i.e. gravimetry, avionics, and space industry), to scientific investigations on measuring Casimir forces of magnetic origin and gravitational physics., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, article + supplemental material

We propose and analyze an all-magnetic scheme to perform a Young's double slit experiment with a micron-sized superconducting sphere of mass $\gtrsim {10}^{13}$ amu. We show that its center of mass could be prepared in a spatial quantum superposition state with an extent of the order of half a micrometer. The scheme is based on magnetically levitating the sphere above a superconducting chip and letting it skate through a static magnetic potential landscape where it interacts for short intervals with quantum circuits. In this way, a protocol for fast quantum interferometry using quantum magnetomechanics is passively implemented. Such a table-top earth-based quantum experiment would operate in a parameter regime where gravitational energy scales become relevant. In particular, we show that the faint parameter-free gravitationally-induced decoherence collapse model, proposed by Di\'osi and Penrose, could be unambiguously falsified., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures. 21. Influence of myocardial infarction on QRS properties: a simulation study

- Abstract
The interplay between structural and electrical changes in the heart after myocardial infarction (MI) plays a key role in the initiation and maintenance of arrhythmia. The anatomical and electrophysiological properties of scar, border zone, and normal myocardium modify the electrocardiographic morphology, which is routinely analysed in clinical settings. However, the influence of various MI properties on the QRS is not intuitively predictable. In this work, we have systematically investigated the effects of 17 post-MI scenarios, varying the location, size, transmural extent, and conductive level of scarring and border zone area, on the forward-calculated QRS. Additionally, we have compared the contributions of different QRS score criteria for quantifying post-MI pathophysiology. The propagation of electrical activity in the ventricles is simulated via a Eikonal model on a unified coordinate system. The analysis has been performed on 49 subjects, and the results imply that the QRS is capable of identifying MI, suggesting the feasibility of inversely reconstructing infarct regions from QRS. There exist sensitivity variations of different QRS criteria for identifying 17 MI scenarios, which is informative for solving the inverse problem.

Background This study provides a global overview of the management of patients with acute cholecystitis during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods CHOLECOVID is an international, multicentre, observational comparative study of patients admitted to hospital with acute cholecystitis during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data on management were collected for a 2-month study interval coincident with the WHO declaration of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and compared with an equivalent pre-pandemic time interval. Mediation analysis examined the influence of SARS-COV-2 infection on 30-day mortality. Results This study collected data on 9783 patients with acute cholecystitis admitted to 247 hospitals across the world. The pandemic was associated with reduced availability of surgical workforce and operating facilities globally, a significant shift to worse severity of disease, and increased use of conservative management. There was a reduction (both absolute and proportionate) in the number of patients undergoing cholecystectomy from 3095 patients (56.2 per cent) pre-pandemic to 1998 patients (46.2 per cent) during the pandemic but there was no difference in 30-day all-cause mortality after cholecystectomy comparing the pre-pandemic interval with the pandemic (13 patients (0.4 per cent) pre-pandemic to 13 patients (0.6 per cent) pandemic; P = 0.355). In mediation analysis, an admission with acute cholecystitis during the pandemic was associated with a non-significant increased risk of death (OR 1.29, 95 per cent c.i. 0.93 to 1.79, P = 0.121). Conclusion CHOLECOVID provides a unique overview of the treatment of patients with cholecystitis across the globe during the first months of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The study highlights the need for system resilience in retention of elective surgical activity. Cholecystectomy was associated with a low risk of mortality and deferral of treatment results in an increase in avoidable morbidity that represents the non-COVID cost of this pandemic.

In this study, in-silico drug trials were conducted using a population of human structurally-healthy atria models to 1) identify key ionic current properties determining AF inducibility, maintenance and pharmacological cardioversion, and 2) compare the prognostic value for predicting individual AF cardioversion of ionic current properties and electrocardiogram (ECG) metrics. In the population of structurally-healthy atria, 477 AF episodes were induced in ionic current profiles with both steep action potential duration (APD) restitution (eliciting APD alternans), and high excitability (enabling propagation at fast rates that transformed alternans into discordant). High excitability also favored 211 sustained AF episodes, so its decrease, through prolonged refractoriness, explained pharmacological cardioversion. In-silico trials over 200 AF episodes, 100 ionic profiles and 10 antiarrhythmic compounds were consistent with previous clinical trials, and identified optimal treatments for individual electrophysiological properties of the atria. Algorithms trained on 211 simulated AF episodes exhibited >70% accuracy in predictions of cardioversion for individual treatments using either ionic current profiles or ECG metrics. In structurally-healthy atria, AF inducibility and sustainability are enabled by discordant alternans, under high excitability and steep restitution conditions. Successful pharmacological cardioversion is predicted with 70% accuracy from either ionic or ECG properties, and it is optimal for treatments maximizing refractoriness (thus reducing excitability) for the given ionic current profile of the atria.

The realisation of precision cardiology requires novel techniques for the non-invasive characterisation of individual patients’ cardiac function to inform therapeutic and diagnostic decision-making. Both electrocardiography and imaging are used for the clinical diagnosis of cardiac disease. The integration of multimodal datasets through advanced computational methods could enable the development of the cardiac ‘digital twin’. A cardiac digital twin is a comprehensive virtual tool that mechanistically reveals a patient’s heart condition from clinical data and simulates treatment outcomes. The adoption of cardiac digital twins requires the non-invasive efficient personalisation of the electrophysiological properties in cardiac models. This thesis presents novel computational techniques to exploit the synergy between Artificial Intelligence and multimodal datasets towards efficiently producing cardiac digital twins from non-invasive routinely acquired clinical data modalities, namely, ECG and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. I present and evaluate -> an efficient Bayesian-based inference method for estimating the ventricular activation properties from electrocardiographic data through CMR-based modelling and simulation, -> and a machine learning-based ECG delineation methodology capable of generalising to new databases to enable the translation of my inference method into real-world clinical applications. These two methodologies, combined with CMR-based cardiac anatomical reconstruction, compose the foundations for an end-to-end cardiac digital twin generation pipeline from non-invasive standard clinical data modalities.
