The paper reviews the performance measurement in the domain of interest. Important data in asset management are further, discussed. The importance and the characteristics of today’s ICTs capabilities are also mentioned in the paper. The role of new concepts such as big data and data mining analytical technologies in managing the performance measurements in asset management are discussed in detail. The authors consequently suggest the use of the modified Balanced Scorecard methodology highlighting both quantitative and qualitative aspects, which is crucial for optimal use of the big data approach and technologies.

Abstract Background Recent findings indicate that several insect lineages receive protection against particular natural enemies through infection with heritable symbionts, but little is yet known about whether enemies are able to discriminate and respond to symbiont-based defense. The pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, receives protection against the parasitic wasp, Aphidius ervi, when infected with the bacterial symbiont Hamiltonella defensa and its associated bacteriophage APSE (Acyrthosiphon pisum secondary endosymbiont). Internally developing parasitoid wasps, such as A. ervi, use maternal and embryonic factors to create an environment suitable for developing wasps. If more than one parasitoid egg is deposited into a single aphid host (superparasitism), then additional complements of these factors may contribute to the successful development of the single parasitoid that emerges. Results We performed experiments to determine if superparasitism is a tactic allowing wasps to overcome symbiont-mediated defense. We found that the deposition of two eggs into symbiont-protected aphids significantly increased rates of successful parasitism relative to singly parasitized aphids. We then conducted behavioral assays to determine whether A. ervi selectively superparasitizes H. defensa-infected aphids. In choice tests, we found that A. ervi tends to deposit a single egg in uninfected aphids, but two or more eggs in H. defensa-infected aphids, indicating that oviposition choices may be largely determined by infection status. Finally, we identified differences in the quantity of the trans-β-farnesene, the major component of aphid alarm pheromone, between H. defensa-infected and uninfected aphids, which may form the basis for discrimination. Conclusions Here we show that the parasitic wasp A. ervi discriminates among symbiont-infected and uninfected aphids, and changes its oviposition behavior in a way that increases the likelihood of overcoming symbiont-based defense. More generally, our results indicate that natural enemies are not passive victims of defensive symbionts, and that an evolutionary arms race between A. pisum and the parasitoid A. ervi may be mediated by a bacterial symbiosis.

Large-scale human exome sequencing can identify rare protein-coding variants with a large impact on complex traits such as body adiposity. We sequenced the exomes of 645,626 individuals from the United Kingdom, the United States, and Mexico and estimated associations of rare coding variants with body mass index (BMI). We identified 16 genes with an exome-wide significant association with BMI, including those encoding five brain-expressed G protein-coupled receptors (CALCR, MC4R, GIPR, GPR151, and GPR75). Protein-truncating variants in GPR75 were observed in ~4/10,000 sequenced individuals and were associated with 1.8 kilograms per square meter lower BMI and 54% lower odds of obesity in the heterozygous state. Knock out of Gpr75 in mice resulted in resistance to weight gain and improved glycemic control in a high-fat diet model. Inhibition of GPR75 may provide a therapeutic strategy for obesity.

In this work, the problem of tsunamis generated by underwater landslides is addressed. Two new solutions are derived in the framework of the linear shallow water equations and linear potential wave theory, respectively. Those solutions are analytical (1 + 1D) and another is semi-analytical (2 + 1D). The 1 + 1D model considers a solid body sliding over a sloping beach at a constant speed, and the 2 + 1D model considers a solid landslide that moves at a constant velocity on a flat bottom. The solution 1 + 1D is checked numerically using a different finite scheme. The 2 + 1D model examines the kinematic and geometric features of the landslide at a constant ocean depth and its influence on the generation of tsunamis. Landslide geometry significantly influences run-up height. Our results reveal a power law relationship between normalized run-up and landslide velocity within a realistic range and a negative power law for the landslide length–thickness. Additionally, a critical aspect ratio between the length and width of the sliding body is identified, which enhances the tsunamigenic process. Finally, the results show that the landslide shape does not have a decisive influence on the pattern of tsunami wave generation and propagation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The modernization of pig production has led to increasingly larger populations of pigs. This dynamic allows for accelerated production and ensures a steady pork supply but also facilitates the spread of infections. PCV2 is a ubiquitous virus and can cause PCV2-associated diseases, depending on production practices. This study aimed to evaluate the conditions of pig production in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, and correlate them with PCV2. A total of 4207 serum samples from 80 farms were analyzed. Epidemiological data were collected and used to investigate factors associated with PCV2 detection. A relative frequency of approximately 30% was detected, primarily in grower pigs maintained on multisite farms. Several production practices, particularly biosecurity measures, were associated with PCV2 on the analyzed farms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we examine the scaling of earthquake waiting time distributions in Northern Chile. For this purpose, we analysed 7-yr high spatial resolution and low completeness magnitude IPOC seismic catalogue and 43-yr USGS catalogue. A unified earthquake moment–space–time scaling relation is empirically evaluated by calculating waiting times for different ranges of magnitude and epicentral area linear dimension and estimating the associated scaling coefficients, β analogue to b -value and γ , the correlation fractal dimension. We find a scaling function that can be characterized with three distinct regions, regions whose behaviour depends on whether seismicity is in the coastal area or at intermediate depth. Moreover, high resolution localizations from the IPOC catalogue allows us to further observe differences: the lower plane seismicity of the double seismic zone behaves just like that at intermediate depth, while the crustal upper plate and the upper plane from the double seismic zone seismicity behaves more like interface seismicity. Thus, the earthquake waiting time distribution primarily depends on whether seismicity is located in a crust-on-crust or in a crust–mantle system: having, respectively, high/low correlated behaviour in the short scale region, non-exponential/exponential decay in the transition middle region and, in all cases, long-term clustering with a slower than exponential decay in the long scale.
