10. Gradient-Adaptive Spline-Interpolated LUT Methods for Low-Complexity Digital Predistortion

Abstract

In this paper, new digital predistortion (DPD) solutions for power amplifier (PA) linearization are proposed, with particular emphasis on reduced processing complexity in future 5G and beyond wideband radio systems. The first proposed method, referred to as the spline-based Hammerstein (SPH) approach, builds on complex spline-interpolated lookup table (LUT) followed by a linear finite impulse response (FIR) filter. The second proposed method, the spline-based memory polynomial (SMP) approach, contains multiple parallel complex spline-interpolated LUTs together with an input delay line such that more versatile memory modeling can be achieved. For both structures, gradient-based learning algorithms are derived to efficiently estimate the LUT control points and other related DPD parameters. Large set of experimental results are provided, with specific focus on 5G New Radio (NR) systems, showing successful linearization of multiple sub-6 GHz PA samples as well as a 28 GHz active antenna array, incorporating channel bandwidths up to 200 MHz. Explicit performance-complexity comparisons are also reported between the SPH and SMP DPD systems and the widely-applied ordinary memory-polynomial (MP) DPD solution. The results show that the linearization capabilities of the proposed methods are very close to that of the ordinary MP DPD, particularly with the proposed SMP approach, while having substantially lower processing complexity., Comment: The manuscript has 14 pages, 19 figures

Abstract

Modern radio systems and transceivers utilize carrier aggregation (CA) to meet the demands for higher and higher data rates. However, the adoption of CA in the existing Long Term Evolution (LTE)-Advanced and emerging 5G New Radio (NR) mobile networks, in case of frequency division duplexing (FDD), may incur self-interference challenges with certain band combinations. More specifically, the nonlinear distortion products of the transmit signals or component carriers (CCs), stemming from the passive radio frequency (RF) front-end components of the transceiver, can appear in one or more of the configured receiver bands, potentially leading to the receiver desensitization. In this paper, we present advanced baseband equivalent signal models for such passive intermodulation (PIM) distortion viewed from the RX point of view, considering also potential memory effects in the PIM generation. Then, building on these signal models, a digital self-interference cancellation technique operating in the transceiver digital front-end is presented. The performance of the proposed solution is evaluated with real-life RF measurements for LTE-Advanced type user equipment (UE) with dual CC inter-band CA, demonstrating excellent suppression properties. In this paper we present a SOA (Service Oriented Architecture)-based platform, enabling the retrieval and analysis of big datasets stemming from social networking (SN) sites and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, collected by smart city applications and socially-aware data aggregation services. A large set of city applications in the areas of Participating Urbanism, Augmented Reality and Sound-Mapping throughout participating cities is being applied, resulting into produced sets of millions of user-generated events and online SN reports fed into the RADICAL platform. 20. Corexit 9500 Enhances Oil Biodegradation and Changes Active Bacterial Community Structure of Oil-Enriched Microcosms

Abstract

To better understand the impacts of Corexit 9500 on the structure and activity levels of hydrocarbon-degrading microbial communities, we analyzed next-generation 16S rRNA gene sequencing libraries of hydrocarbon enrichments grown at 5 and 25°C using both DNA and RNA extracts as the sequencing templates. Oil biodegradation patterns in both 5 and 25°C enrichments were consistent with those reported in the literature (i.e., aliphatics were degraded faster than aromatics). Slight increases in biodegradation were observed in the presence of Corexit at both temperatures. Differences in community structure were observed between treatment conditions in the DNA-based libraries. The 25°C consortia were dominated by Vibrio, Idiomarina, Marinobacter, Alcanivorax, and Thalassospira species, while the 5°C consortia were dominated by several species of the genera Flavobacterium, Alcanivorax, and Oleispira Most of these genera have been linked to hydrocarbon degradation and have been observed after oil spills. Colwellia and Cycloclasticus, known aromatic degraders, were also found in these enrichments. The addition of Corexit did not have an effect on the active bacterial community structure of the 5°C consortia, while at 25°C, a decrease in the relative abundance of Marinobacter was observed. At 25°C, Thalassospira, Marinobacter, and Idiomarina were present at higher relative abundances in the RNA than DNA libraries, suggesting that they were active in degradation. Similarly, Oleispira was greatly stimulated by the addition of oil at 5°C.IMPORTANCE While dispersants such as Corexit 9500 can be used to treat oil spills, there is still debate on the effectiveness on enhancing oil biodegradation and its potential toxic effect on oil-degrading microbial communities. The results of this study provide some insights on the microbial dynamics of hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial populations in the presence of Corexit 9500. Operational taxonomic unit (OTU) analyses indicated that several OTUs were inhibited by the addition of Corexit. Conversely, a number of OTUs were stimulated by the addition of the dispersant, many of which were identified as known hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. The results highlight the value of using RNA-based methods to further understand the impact of dispersant on the overall activity of different hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial groups.

Diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) is the most promising mechanism that accelerates Galactic cosmic rays (CRs) in the shocks of supernova remnants (SNRs). It is based on particles scattering caused by turbulence ahead and behind the shock. The turbulence upstream is supposedly generated by the CRs, but this process is not well understood. The dominant mechanism may depend on the evolutionary state of the shock and can be studied via the CRs escaping upstream into the interstellar medium (ISM). Aims. Previous observations of the gamma Cygni SNR showed a difference in morphology between GeV and TeV energies. Since this SNR has the right age and is at the evolutionary stage for a significant fraction of CRs to escape, our aim is to understand gamma-ray emission in the vicinity of the gamma Cygni SNR. Methods. We observed the region of the gamma Cygni SNR with the MAGIC Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes between 2015 May and 2017 September recording 87 h of good-quality data. Additionally, we analysed Fermi-LAT data to study the energy dependence of the morphology as well as the energy spectrum in the GeV to TeV range. The energy spectra and morphology were compared against theoretical predictions, which include a detailed derivation of the CR escape process and their gamma-ray generation. Results. The MAGIC and Fermi-LAT data allowed us to identify three emission regions that can be associated with the SNR and that dominate at different energies. Our hadronic emission model accounts well for the morphology and energy spectrum of all source components. It constrains the time-dependence of the maximum energy of the CRs at the shock, the time-dependence of the level of turbulence, and the diffusion coefficient immediately outside the SNR shock.
