2. A dynamical model of opinion formation in voting processes under bounded confidence

Abstract

In recent years, opinion dynamics has received an increasing attention, and various models have been introduced and evaluated mainly by simulation. In this study, we introduce and study a dynamical model inspired by the so-called `bounded confidence' approach where voters engaged in an electoral decision with two options are influenced by individuals sharing an opinion similar to their own. This model allows one to capture salient features of the evolution of opinions and results in final clusters of voters. The model is nonlinear and discontinuous. We provide a detailed study of the model, including a complete classification of fixed points of the appearing dynamical system and analysis of their stability. It is shown that any trajectory tends to a fixed point. The model highlights that the final electoral outcome depends on the level of interaction in the society, besides the initial opinion of each individual, so that a strongly interconnected society can reverse the electoral outcome as compared to a society with looser exchange., Comment: 18 pages

Abstract

Medical diagnostic methods that utilise modalities of patient symptoms such as speech are increasingly being used for initial diagnostic purposes and monitoring disease state progression Speech disorders are particularly prevalent in neurological degenerative diseases such as Parkinson s disease the focus of the study undertaken in this work We will demonstrate state of the art statistical time series methods that combine elements of statistical time series modelling and signal processing with modern machine learning methods based on Gaussian process models to develop methods to accurately detect a core symptom of speech disorder in individuals who have Parkinson s disease We will show that the proposed methods out perform standard best practices of speech diagnostics in detecting ataxic speech disorders and we will focus the study particularly on a detailed analysis of a well regarded Parkinson s data speech study publicly available making all our results reproducible The methodology developed is based on a specialised technique not widely adopted in medical statistics that found great success in other domains such as signal processing seismology speech analysis and ecology In this work we will present this method from a statistical perspective and generalise it to a stochastic model which will be used to design a test for speech disorders when applied to speech time series signals As such this work is making contributions both of a practical and statistical methodological nature

Abstract

Objectives: The purposes of this study are to describe the epidemiology of pericardial and tunica vaginalis testis mesothelioma and assess the role of asbestos exposure for these rare diseases. Methods: Based on incident pericardial and tunica vaginalis testis mesothelioma cases collected from the Italian national mesothelioma registry (ReNaM) in the period 1993–2015, incidence rates, survival median period and prognostic factors have been evaluated. A case–control study has been performed to analyze the association with asbestos exposure (occupational and non-occupational) for these diseases. Results: Between 1993 and 2015, 58 pericardial (20 women and 38 men) and 80 tunica vaginalis testis mesothelioma cases have been registered with a mean annual standardized (world standard population as reference) incidence rates of 0.049 (per million) in men and 0.023 in women for the pericardial site, and 0.095 for tunica vaginalis testis mesothelioma. Occupational exposure to asbestos was significantly associated with the risk of the diseases [odds ratio (OR) 3.68, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.85–7.31 and OR 3.42, 95% CI 1.93–6.04 in pericardial and tunica vaginalis testis mesothelioma, respectively]. The median survival was 2.5 months for pericardial and 33.0 months for tunica vaginalis testis mesotheliomas. Age was the main predictive factor for survival for both anatomical sites. Conclusions: For the first time in an analytical study, asbestos exposure was associated with pericardial and tunica vaginalis testis mesothelioma risk, supporting the causal role of asbestos for all anatomical sites. The extreme rarity of the diseases, the poor survival and the prognostic role of age have been confirmed based on population and nationwide mesothelioma registry data.

Abstract

The paper shows an advancement of the research that the authors have been carrying out in recent years in semantic structuring of digital architectural representations field, with a focus on the issue of uncertainty of annotations.The studies carried out in this regard have shown how the domain experts specialization determines a vision and interpretation of the same architectural object that we could define "categorized". The interest was, then, in verifying which categories of experts have a greater degree of agreement in classifying and segmenting architectural elements, to highlight which specializations contribute the most in enriching the semantic reasoning about such forms. Aiming to broaden this reasoning, the research was deepened with annotation sessions concerning architecture examples that didn’t correspond to the classical orders rule but included wider fields of historical heritage (from sacred to fortified architecture). The aim is to verify whether the uncertainty of annotation is actually ascribable to a specific segment of the historical heritage, for example: the classical world, or whether the question is broader and as such in needs deeper thinking.DOI: https://doi.org/10.20365/disegnarecon.26.2021.14

Abstract

The drawing of architecture is the discipline that better than others offers the useful tools for the study of places, historical artefacts and architectural elements that characterize those spaces; the survey, in its broadest sense of knowledge, offers the basis for a systematic documentation, cataloguing and consequent classification of the real.This consolidated awareness defines the foundations of the research, focused on the architectural heritage of the ancient Chinese villages, the only custodians of the historical and cultural memory of China.The survey process, extended to the two regions in which the country is divided, has focused on the analysis of common typological elements. Among these, the research focused on the study of the entrance, both gate and domestic door, as a separating element between exterior and interior, public and private spaces, from macro to micro-scale.In the operational approach, the study was conducted from direct observation of the types present in some suitably selected villages. From the sketches the formal characteristics have been recognized and ordered, whose qualitative attributes have been perfected with traditional and photogrammetric surveying operations. The results of the survey have been systematized in a first comparative synoptic chart that constitutes the first phase of a larger operation, oriented to the updating and enrichment of the documentation available to date both in terms of quality and refinement of the data.DOI: https://doi.org/10.20365/disegnarecon.25.2020.20

Abstract

The Carthusian Monasteries of San Martino in Naples, San Giacomo in Capri and San Lorenzo in Padula are located on the territory of Region Campania. The work presented features an in depth study of the Neapolitan one, which follows, in its layout, at different altitudes, the natural decline of the hill of Sant'Elmo. The fascination and mystery, concealed by the complex of the Carthusian Monastery, can be brought to light through the different stages of the survey, which, in a collaboration including fields of different disciplines, was financed as a PRIN research project denominated: CHROME (Cultura! Heritage Resources Orienting Multimodal Experiences). The investigation activities took piace at the lnterdepartmental Research Centre URBANECO. The main purpose of the project is the pooling of multimedia, multimode data and its interdisciplinary treatment far the creation of a virtual agent able to increase the potentialities of interaction with the public visiting the sites and viewing works of cultura! interest. The survey carried out, with no contact and non-invasive equipment, allowed the determination of three-dimensional digita! models in fall compliance with the goals of the PRIN project.

Abstract

IntroductionThe epidemiology of gender differences for mesothelioma incidence has been rarely discussed in national case lists. In Italy an epidemiological surveillance system (ReNaM) is working by the means of a national register.MethodsIncident malignant mesothelioma (MM) cases in the period 1993 to 2012 were retrieved from ReNaM. Gender ratio by age class, period of diagnosis, diagnostic certainty, morphology and modalities of asbestos exposure has been analysed using exact tests for proportion. Economic activity sectors, jobs and territorial distribution of mesothelioma cases in women have been described and discussed. To perform international comparative analyses, the gender ratio of mesothelioma deaths was calculated by country from the WHO database and the correlation with the mortality rates estimated.ResultsIn the period of study a case list of 21 463 MMs has been registered and the modalities of asbestos exposure have been investigated for 16 458 (76.7%) of them. The gender ratio (F/M) was 0.38 and 0.70 (0.14 and 0.30 for occupationally exposed subjects only) for pleural and peritoneal cases respectively. Occupational exposures for female MM cases occurred in the chemical and plastic industry, and mainly in the non-asbestos textile sector. Gender ratio proved to be inversely correlated with mortality rate among countries.ConclusionsThe consistent proportion of mesothelioma cases in women in Italy is mainly due to the relevant role of non-occupational asbestos exposures and the historical presence of the female workforce in several industrial settings. Enhancing the awareness of mesothelioma aetiology in women could support the effectiveness of welfare system and prevention policies.

Abstract

One of the hot topics of computer graphics investigation in the last years is the use of augmented virtual reality techniques for storage, preservation and dissemination of the historical and cultural heritage. In this context we present the work made by the Workshop School in New Technologies of Santander in the specialty “Systems Information Management, GIS and 3D modeling Heritage”. The project consisted of three-dimensional virtualization cultural areas of Santander via reverse engineering, image processing and machine vision. In order to simulate the historical evolution of a city, it is necessary to represent first the current state as a base and from that representation to go back in time, the study of its urban areas and their evolution is facilitated by knowing the use and position of the historical buildings and their dynamics. Three-dimensional modeling provides an excellent tool to represent or simulate the constructive development of the city. The most adequate model for this type of collaboration is the virtual reality model acquired through successive digital camera and laser scanner shots with a high amount of overlapping joints between takes. In addition to using the information obtained from the images, the composition of the 3D models was achieved by applying reverse engineering and analysis of augmented reality elements with the objective of obtaining smart models for application in the areas of tourism promotion and interpretation of the historical and cultural heritage

Abstract

San Leucio (Caserta) is one of the most interesting experiments in the economic, social and urban development of a Bourbon-era industrial city. The planning of the project under King Ferdinando IV is difficult to understand, given the loss of Collecini’s drawings and the failure to complete development of the utopian “Ferdinandopoli”. Nevertheless, the buildings actually constructed serve in illustrating architectural relationships, hierarchies and styles. These features make this project and its integration in the landscape one of the most important industrial experiments of the period. The current report derives from research by the universities of the Region of Campania. The first step is the acquisition of three-dimensional data on the built part of Ferdinandopoli, using digital photogrammetry. The second is the realization of a three-dimensional catalogue of the architectural components and elements, through their segmentation and matching in semantic families. This process serves in identifying recurring elements, useful for hypothetical reconstruction of the unrealized parts of this site
