A comprehensive CAD/CAM dentistry curriculum that includes broad aspects of single tooth restoration has been implemented at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry (COD) since 2010. The purpose of the program is to promote an educational environment that utilizes current technology to enhance the quality and efficiency of single-tooth dental treatment offered to patients, while also preparing graduating students to apply recent and future clinical advances. This article describes the history, organization, rationale, and objectives of the tooth-supported restorative aspects of our comprehensive pre-clinical and clinical CAD/CAM curriculum and presents the educational and clinical outcomes of this program.

A range scanner is developed that can scan a gypsum dental cast and reconstruct the cast digitally for display and storage purposes. The scanner is based on subtractive light and computes the range values using optical triangulation. A fiducial marker is introduced that, when attached to a dental cast at the time of image acquisition, makes it possible to integrate multiview range images of the cast without image registration. A method for calibrating the scanner is described and experimental results showing the accuracy of the scanner are presented. Deut 4:1-40 is generally regarded as a coherent text. In practice, however, the "canon formula" in 4:2 is for various reasons often treated by commentators in near isolation from its context. This essay argues that this interpretive decision results in the flattening of a key conceptual parallel within the introduction to Deut 4. It argues that Deut 4:2 is a crucial element in a parallel that this text establishes between the way Israel treats the words of God through Moses and the way Israel treats God. Without v. 2 this parallelism loses much of its sophistication: the object lesson of Baal-Peor (vv. 3-4) lacks context and what it means to keep the commandments and judgments of YHWH (vv. 2, 6) lacks definition. Case studies of 37 two- and four-year colleges and universities and their responses to financial stress, show that the most successful: recognized the need for more effective resource use, promoted long-range planning, identified priority programs and trimmed others, attracted capable managers, improved fund-raising, and required greater trustee, faculty, and staff involvement. Purpose: The objectives of this study were to investigate the nature of recently published prosthodontic literature, to investigate the types of collaboration and funding as well as their relationship, and to analyze the associations between collaboration and extramural funding. Materials and Methods: Three peer-reviewed prosthodontic journals were used for the analysis of articles published in 1998, 2003, and 2008. The articles were analyzed based on associations between the type of article, type of original research, collaboration, and funding. The chi-square test and logistic regression were used for data analysis (α = .05). Results: From 998 articles, a significant decrease in reviews (P < .001) and an increase in case reports (P = .001) were observed. Articles regarding dental materials ranged from 53% to 58% of the total original research, and the amount of collaboration among disciplines (P = .012), institutions (P < .001), and countries (P = .014) increased from 1998 to 2008. Most studies (77.5%) did not report funding, and articles related to dental materials had the most collaboration and funding. Dental materials (48%), clinical care (37%), and education/public health research (7%) were supported by private companies, and biomedical and translational studies were mostly supported by a university (13%) or the government (7%). A strong association was noted between collaboration (P = .010), extramural funding, and original research, especially related to education/public health (P < .001), clinical care (P = .013), and dental materials (P = .004). Conclusion: An increase in original research and collaboration was observed from 1998 to 2008. Studies that reported funding remained constant. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes from a predoctoral implant clinic over 3 years. Materials and Methods: All patients who received implant-retained mandibular overdentures (IODs) or a single-tooth implant (STI) restoration in the Predoctoral Implant Program at the University of Illinois-Chicago College of Dentistry between 2006 and 2009 were included in this study. A two-stage surgical placement and healing protocol was followed by oral surgery, periodontic, and prosthodontic specialty clinics. The following potential prognostic information was collected: patient age and sex; implant diameter, length, and sites; and complications related to the treatment. Life-table and Kaplan-Meier survival analyses were performed for both IOD and STI patient groups. Results: A total of 371 implants were placed in 243 patients. There were 164 implants placed in 82 patients in the IOD group and 207 implants placed in 161 patients in the STI group. Two implants failed in the IOD group and 2 implants failed in the STI group. The cumulative survival rates for the implants in both the IOD and STI groups were 99%. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed no significant differences between the two groups. The most common complication observed in the IOD group was damage to the attachment inserts, and for the STI group, it was repair or remaking of the definitive prosthesis. Conclusion: As demonstrated by the 3-year clinical outcomes, a predoctoral implant program can provide predictable patient-centered therapy with few complications. Patient therapy, guided by thoughtful diagnosis and driven by restorative outcome, can lead to favorable results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate the remineralization of natural human dentin caries with an experimental whisker‐reinforced Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) composite. Materials and Methods: Teeth with moderate active dentin caries were prepared with caries‐disclosing dye and hand instruments, restored with ART or resin‐modified glass ionomer cement (RM‐GIC), and then wet sliced into 120‐µm sections with 15 sections in each group. After taking transverse microradiographs and implementing digital image analysis to determine the "mineral‐loss‐before," each section was incubated in artificial saliva solution (pH = 7.0) for 4 weeks and 8 weeks with 1 hour each workday in demineralization solution (pH = 4.3). Transverse microradiographs of each section were retaken, and the "mineral‐loss‐after" was determined. The remineralization was calculated from [1‐("mineral‐loss‐after"/"mineral‐loss‐before")] × 100%. Results were statistically analyzed with a repeated‐measures ANOVA with one within‐subject factor (time: 4 and 8 weeks) and one between‐subject factor (material: ART and RM‐GIC) (α = 0.05). Results: The statistical analysis indicated that ART composite resulted in significantly higher remineralization than the RM‐GIC (p ≤ 0.05). For the remineralization of each material, there was a statistical difference between 4 weeks and 8 weeks (p ≤ 0.05).
