2. Programmed Death Ligand-1 Combined Positive Score Concordance and Interrater Reliability in Primary Tumors and Synchronous Lymph Node Metastases in Resected Cases of [p16.sup.+] Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract

Context.--Pembrolizumab is used in patients with metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma contingent upon the programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) combined positive score (CPS). Objective.--To compare PD-L1 CPS scores derived from paired resected primary tumors (PTs) and lymph node metastases (LMs) in patients with [p16.sup.+] oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). Design.--We identified 38 resected [p16.sup.+] OPSCCs for which paired PTs and LMs were available. PD-L1 immunohistochemistry using the SP263 antibody clone was done on both the PT and the LM. CPS scoring was performed by 4 observers, and data were analyzed at the CPS cut points of greater than or equal to 1 and 20 in regard to interobserver and interspecimen agreement. Results.--Overall agreement between consensus CPS scoring of PT and LM was seen in 76% of paired specimens ([kappa] = 0.53). No specimen received a negative consensus score. Interobserver agreement for both PT and LM was fair to substantial ([kappa] = 0.54 and 0.51, respectively) and was inferior to that seen in a prospective series of unselected head and neck squamous carcinoma cases evaluated at our institution ([kappa] = 0.84). Conclusions.--Given the high rates of interobserver and interspecimen variability, evaluation of additional material or by additional observers may be of value in performing CPS scoring in cases of [p16.sup.+] OPSCC. Abstract

We introduce a Multi-modal Neural Machine Translation model in which a doubly-attentive decoder naturally incorporates spatial visual features obtained using pre-trained convolutional neural networks, bridging the gap between image description and translation. Our decoder learns to attend to source-language words and parts of an image independently by means of two separate attention mechanisms as it generates words in the target language. We find that our model can efficiently exploit not just back-translated in-domain multi-modal data but also large general-domain text-only MT corpora. 9. Multilingual Multi-modal Embeddings for Natural Language Processing

Abstract

We propose a novel discriminative model that learns embeddings from multilingual and multi-modal data, meaning that our model can take advantage of images and descriptions in multiple languages to improve embedding quality. To that end, we introduce a modification of a pairwise contrastive estimation optimisation function as our training objective. We evaluate our embeddings on an image-sentence ranking (ISR), a semantic textual similarity (STS), and a neural machine translation (NMT) task. We find that the additional multilingual signals lead to improvements on both the ISR and STS tasks, and the discriminative cost can also be used in re-ranking $n$-best lists produced by NMT models, yielding strong improvements., Comment: 4 pages (5 including references), no figures

10. Incorporating Global Visual Features into Attention-Based Neural Machine Translation

Abstract

We introduce multi-modal, attention-based neural machine translation (NMT) models which incorporate visual features into different parts of both the encoder and the decoder. We utilise global image features extracted using a pre-trained convolutional neural network and incorporate them (i) as words in the source sentence, (ii) to initialise the encoder hidden state, and (iii) as additional data to initialise the decoder hidden state. In our experiments, we evaluate how these different strategies to incorporate global image features compare and which ones perform best. We also study the impact that adding synthetic multi-modal, multilingual data brings and find that the additional data have a positive impact on multi-modal models. We report new state-of-the-art results and our best models also significantly improve on a comparable phrase-based Statistical MT (PBSMT) model trained on the Multi30k data set according to all metrics evaluated. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time a purely neural model significantly improves over a PBSMT model on all metrics evaluated on this data set., Comment: 8 pages (11 including references), 5 figures

Abstract

The focus of this study is a trend in British children’s literature concerning the ancientness of British landscape, with what I argue is a Neo-Romantic sensibility. Neo-Romanticism is marked by highly subjective viewpoints on the countryside, and I argue that it illuminates our understanding of post-war children’s literature, particularly in what is often called its Second Golden Age. Through discussion of four generally overlooked authors, each of importance to this formative publishing era, I aim to explore certain aspects of the Second Golden Age children’s literature establishment. I argue that the trend I critique is characterised by ambiguity, defined by the imaginative practice entailed in the archaeological view.

Abstract

Cross-language voice conversion is useful for many applications, and we are trying to apply the technique to a language training system for reducing voice individuality differences. In this paper, we describe experiments that test effectiveness of an extension of singlelanguage voice conversion, to include cross-language utterances. The performance was investigated by objective and perceptual evaluation using bilingual-speakers data for training. Then, the correlations between a computed distance measure and a human perceptual pronunciation evaluation score were compared before and after applying conversion. From these results, it was found that the crosslanguage voice conversion reduces speakers' voice differences between the pairs, and the phoneme based measures show somewhat clearer correspondences to the human perceptual score in vowels' test after applying voice conversion., ICSLP2002: the 7th International Conference on Spoken Language Processing , September 16-20, 2002, Denver, Colorado, USA.
