THEORY of knowledge , *PROPOSITION (Logic) , *INTENTION , *CONCEPTS - Abstract
Elizabeth Anscombe characterised practical knowledge as knowledge 'in intention'. As Anscombe recognised, accepting this view involves rejecting certain basic orthodox epistemological assumptions. But even once this is done, a challenge remains for a conception of practical knowledge as knowledge 'in intention'. For while practical knowledge would appear to be a kind of propositional knowledge, intentions would appear to be a kind of non-propositional attitude. I call this the 'Structural Challenge' for an intention-based account of practical knowledge. After rejecting two suggested responses – one which views intentions as propositional attitudes; one which views practical knowledge as non-propositional knowledge – I offer my own solution by showing how simply having and carrying out an intention to φ will ordinarily meet a plausible neutral condition on propositional knowledge. Knowing a fact will in general involve being mentally related to it via a successful exercise of relevant concepts. The account I develop turns on viewing a person's carrying out an intention to φ as their constituting the fact that they are φ-ing, through a practical exercise of their concept of φ-ing. The resulting account sheds light both on the analogies, and on the crucial formal differences, between practical and theoretical knowledge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

363.19 - Abstract
This research responded to a National Health Service (NHS) wide problem. The problem is how to create healthier automated food and drink vending services. The research’s’ interpretation of this central research problem is embedded in the Facilities Management (FM) perspective. Vending retail products do not support government healthy lifestyle policies and initiatives. FMs have to change this through catering contracts. However, there is little guidance on how to design, evidence and operationalise improvement. The research tested vending point of sale designs over a year, trying to reduce the sale of unhealthy products. Secondly, it developed a novel application of a nutritional profile to enable the service design process and evidence change. Thirdly, the research baselined service level information through survey n=1,292. Night shift staff were a key stakeholder as it was thought that vending was their only retail catering and the impact was unknown. Regression modelling and multivariate analysis was used in the survey and design tests. Linear regression was used to understand the impact of vending point of sale design on sales. Logistic regression was used to test service level perceptions in the survey. The statistical methods used were flexible. The survey design and analysis is widely applicable to evaluate many services. The research found that in combination, changing product ranges, adding nutritional labels, and moving water to eye level significantly reduces unhealthy sales. However real change requires healthier vending products. The nutritional profile adapted is highly suitable to standardise service and evaluate how healthy vending products really are. The survey was a novel and statistically robust addition to FM service evaluation. It proved staff perception of poor catering, inadequate breaks, innutritious food and need for staff food education. Vending was central. Finally, making meaningful service improvements and setting thresholds in the statistical models confidently required in depth first-hand knowledge.

I deliver an account of 'practical knowledge'; the knowledge we have of our own intentional actions. Part One introduces the target notion by describing three philosophically interesting features it appears to have (Ch. 1) and dismisses two broad approaches to understanding it - a 'consciousness-based' and an 'inferentialist' approach (Ch. 2). A third approach is thus motivated: 'Intentionalist' accounts of practical knowledge see practical knowledge as somehow constituted by the agent's intention. Part Two considers and rejects a version of Intentionalism which I call Cognitivist Intentionalism - CI. Cognitivist Intentionalists think of intentions as a kind of belief. Practical knowledge is constituted by intention in whatever way ordinary knowledge is constituted by belief, but it is a special kind of knowledge because its constituting attitude is special. I dismiss two versions of CI, showing them to be internally problematic (Ch. 3). I then argue that intentions are not propositional attitudes (Ch. 4), thus ruling out any version of CI - if intentions were beliefs they would have to be propositional attitudes. Part Three considers the remaining options for Intentionalism. According to Non-Cognitivist Intentionalism - NCI - practical knowledge is constituted by intentions, which are not a kind of belief, just in case they are executed. NCI happily accommodates practical knowledge's philosophically interesting features. But it is hard to see why executing an intention should constitute knowing, and how a kind of propositional knowledge could be constituted by a non-propositional attitude, which Chapter Four argued intentions to be. Chapter Six develops NCI into the stronger NPI - Non-Propositionalist Intentionalism. In NPI the non-propositional character of intentions is central. Practical knowledge is a kind of propositional knowledge which is constituted by a non-propositional attitude; a kind of knowledge which is not constituted by belief. I explain how this can be.

551.8 - Abstract
Understanding fault zone evolution is crucial to appreciating how deformation mechanisms may change in time and space. This is of particular importance when considering seismic slip, with its potential for human hazard. Histories of fault evolution and reactivation are recorded as overprinted structures in ancient fault zones, now exhumed from seismogenic depths. Recognition of ancient seismicity is aided by the occurrence of pseudotachylyte, a solidified frictional melt generated at seismic slip speeds along faults. Because pseudotachylytes form on similar timescales to the duration of seismic slip, they capture a snapshot of earthquake parameters such as temperature, depth, strength, magnitude and stress drop. The Outer Hebrides Fault Zone, UK, was repeatedly reactivated during long-lived collision and bears widespread pseudotachylyte. It is used in this thesis as a case study in which to constrain the seismic history. Slip directions on pseudotachylyte faults are identified using field observations supported by microstructural evidence. The depth and temperature of faulting, and the coseismic temperature rise, are studied using the composition and microstructures in the pseudotachylyte veins, whilst experimentally produced melts further understanding of the control of lithology on coseismic fault strength. Finally, the static strength and the dynamic weakening are derived from further field observations. Seismicity occurred at ≥ 10 km, somewhat deeper than has been previously thought, and was initially scattered diffusely around the fault zone on small, strong faults. Magnitudes are recorded up to MW 6.3 and static stress drops from 1.5-8.8 MPa. The lithology hosting the fault is shown to control the coseismic strength of the pseudotachylyte-bearing fault both through the melt composition and through the development of fault roughness. Overall, results show that seismicity in the Outer Hebrides occurred throughout a long convergence history because fault weakening, slip localisation and fluid influx were heterogeneously distributed around the fault zone.

This is an autoethnographic exploration of some of my experiences in prisons in both Mexico City and England. My writing is a way for me to try to understand my journey in the light of my research as a feminist criminologist, a tool for me to begin to comprehend my journey, deconstruct my trauma, and outline how I overcame my incarceration-based trauma (IBT). The essay shines a light on how women who have been imprisoned, long after their release, continue to carry the echoes of prison as trauma responses. Autoethnography is a means to explore and contextualize my experiences in a manner that makes them relevant and meaningful to the wider social fabric, as above, so below. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: People living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are disproportionately impacted by socioeconomic deprivation and are at increased risk of developing other long‐term conditions (LTCs). These illnesses require transformative action to tackle the adverse effects on their health. Data on lived experiences of LTCs among people living with HIV of Black African and Black Caribbean ethnicities are sparse, and how people with LTCs are impacted by social determinants of health (SDoH). Methods: Through a phenomenological study design this qualitative study, conducted in 2022, comprised four focus group discussions (FGDs) with 20 people of Black ethnicities living with HIV were purposively invited from a community organisation (CO) in London, including four semistructured interviews with CO staff. Following transcription, qualitative data were analysed thematically and measures to validate the findings were implemented. Results: The findings are presented in terms of the following four levels of SDoH: (1) individual determinants (such as the impact of SDoH on lifestyle modification and self‐management); (2) interpersonal determinants (such as positive experiences of accessing healthcare for LTCs); (3) clinical determinants (such as care pathway barriers) and (4) systemic determinants (such as systemic barriers related to race/ethnicity). Conclusions: It is necessary to provide ongoing and interactive education to community members who live with HIV, focusing on risks and management of LTCs. Additionally, individuals would benefit from support to navigate increasingly complex and fragmented health services. Health Service staff require cultural competence when caring for patients of Black African and Black Caribbean ethnicities with complex health and psychosocial needs. Patient or Public Contribution: The research team collaborated with an HIV CO in South London from the very start of the project to agree the study design and learn about the realities of their daily lived experiences. Community collaborators helped to develop the semistructured interview and FGD topic guides, and were directly involved in the data gathering, analysis and validation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To describe the clinical epidemiology of COVID‐19 in people of black ethnicity living with HIV in the UK. Methods: We investigated the incidence and factors associated with COVID‐19 in a previously established and well‐characterized cohort of black people with HIV. Primary outcomes were COVID‐19 acquisition and severe COVID‐19 disease (requiring hospitalization and/or resulting in death). Cumulative incidence was analysed using Nelson–Aalen methods, and associations between demographic, pre‐pandemic immune‐virological parameters, comorbidity status and (severe) COVID‐19 were identified using Cox regression analysis. Results: COVID‐19 status was available for 1847 (74%) of 2495 COVID‐AFRICA participants (median age 49.6 years; 56% female; median CD4 cell count = 555 cells/μL; 93% HIV RNA <200 copies/mL), 573 (31%) of whom reported at least one episode of COVID‐19. The cumulative incidence rates of COVID‐19 and severe COVID‐19 were 31.0% and 3.4%, respectively. Region of ancestry (East/Southern/Central vs. West Africa), nadir CD4 count and kidney disease were associated with COVID‐19 acquisition. Diabetes mellitus [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) = 2.39, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.26–4.53] and kidney disease (aHR = 2.53, 95% CI: 1.26–4.53) were associated with an increased risk, and recent CD4 count >500 cells/μL (aHR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.25–0.93) with a lower risk of severe COVID‐19. Conclusions: Region of ancestry was associated with COVID‐19 acquisition, and immune and comorbidity statuses were associated with COVID‐19 disease severity in people of black ethnicity living with HIV in the UK. PHENOMENOLOGY , *MIND & body , *PHILOSOPHY , *SUBJECTIVITY , *SUBJECT (Philosophy) - Abstract
Philosophy is witnessing an "Agential Turn," characterised by the thought that explaining certain distinctive features of human mentality requires conceiving of many mental phenomena as acts, and of subjects as their agents. We raise a challenge for three central explanatory appeals to mental agency––agentialism about doxastic responsibility, agentialism about doxastic self‐knowledge, and an agentialist explanation of the delusion of thought insertion: agentialists either commit themselves to implausibly strong claims about the kind of agency involved in the relevant phenomena, or make appeals to agency which seem explanatorily redundant. The agentialist literature does not contain a clear answer to this Agentialist Dilemma, and we put it forward here as a core challenge for the Agential Turn. But we also accept the fundamental motivation behind the Agential Turn, its critique and rejection of a purely passivist and spectatorial conception of the human mind. We close by urging the recognition of a broader category of rational subjectivity, a category which includes states which are neither active nor passive, but nevertheless form part of a subject's rational point of view on the world. 35. The Information-Seeking Habits of Architecture Faculty

- Abstract
This study examines results from a survey of architecture faculty across the United States investigating information-seeking behavior and perceptions of library services. Faculty were asked to rank information sources they used for research, teaching, and creativity within their discipline. Sources were ranked similarly across these activities, suggesting broad and eclectic interests. While Internet resources and books were important across the board, e-books were ranked low. As an information source, librarians were also perceived to have less value than peers or even students. Librarians should consider ways to make libraries experiential and inspiring to add value and demonstrate continued relevance in an ever-expanding information field.

Beginning in March 2020, academic libraries experienced dramatic changes to services resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent stay-at-home orders. Architecture libraries in particular serve a unique user group who are still partially reliant on print resources and were therefore significantly challenged. This article outlines changes to library services and resources, and it considers which transitions are likely to have long-term impact on library functions. Data from two surveys circulated during the early and late stages of the pandemic is compared, contrasted, and supported by research literature. The authors conclude that collection development and professional practice are two areas of architecture librarianship that will see the most significant long-term changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: This international study aimed to assess: 1) the prevalence of preoperative and postoperative COVID-19 among patients with hip fracture, 2) the effect on 30-day mortality, and 3) clinical factors associated with the infection and with mortality in COVID-19-positive patients. Methods: A multicentre collaboration among 112 centres in 14 countries collected data on all patients presenting with a hip fracture between 1st March-31st May 2020. Demographics, residence, place of injury, presentation blood tests, Nottingham Hip Fracture Score, time to surgery, management, ASA grade, length of stay, COVID-19 and 30-day mortality status were recorded. Results: A total of 7090 patients were included, with a mean age of 82.2 (range 50–104) years and 4959 (69.9%) being female. Of 651 (9.2%) patients diagnosed with COVID-19, 225 (34.6%) were positive at presentation and 426 (65.4%) were positive postoperatively. Positive COVID-19 status was independently associated with male sex (odds ratio (OR) 1.38, p = 0.001), residential care (OR 2.15, p < 0.001), inpatient fall (OR 2.23, p = 0.003), cancer (OR 0.63, p = 0.009), ASA grades 4 (OR 1.59, p = 0.008) or 5 (OR 8.28, p < 0.001), and longer admission (OR 1.06 for each increasing day, p < 0.001). Patients with COVID-19 at any time had a significantly lower chance of 30-day survival versus those without COVID-19 (72.7% versus 92.6%, p < 0.001). COVID-19 was independently associated with an increased 30-day mortality risk (hazard ratio (HR) 2.83, p < 0.001). Increasing age (HR 1.03, p = 0.028), male sex (HR 2.35, p < 0.001), renal disease (HR 1.53, p = 0.017), and pulmonary disease (HR 1.45, p = 0.039) were independently associated with a higher 30-day mortality risk in patients with COVID-19 when adjusting for confounders. Conclusion: The prevalence of COVID-19 in hip fracture patients during the first wave of the pandemic was 9%, and was independently associated with a three-fold increased 30-day mortality risk. Among COVID-19-positive patients, those who were older, male, with renal or pulmonary disease had a significantly higher 30-day mortality risk.
