8. Detecting the Severity of Major Depressive Disorder from Speech: A Novel HARD-Training Methodology

Abstract

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a common worldwide mental health issue with high associated socioeconomic costs. The prediction and automatic detection of MDD can, therefore, make a huge impact on society. Speech, as a non-invasive, easy to collect signal, is a promising marker to aid the diagnosis and assessment of MDD. In this regard, speech samples were collected as part of the Remote Assessment of Disease and Relapse in Major Depressive Disorder (RADAR-MDD) research programme. RADAR-MDD was an observational cohort study in which speech and other digital biomarkers were collected from a cohort of individuals with a history of MDD in Spain, United Kingdom and the Netherlands. In this paper, the RADAR-MDD speech corpus was taken as an experimental framework to test the efficacy of a Sequence-to-Sequence model with a local attention mechanism in a two-class depression severity classification paradigm. Additionally, a novel training method, HARD-Training, is proposed. It is a methodology based on the selection of more ambiguous samples for the model training, and inspired by the curriculum learning paradigm. HARD-Training was found to consistently improve - with an average increment of 8.6% - the performance of our classifiers for both of two speech elicitation tasks used and each collection site of the RADAR-MDD speech corpus. With this novel methodology, our Sequence-to-Sequence model was able to effectively detect MDD severity regardless of language. 13. Resume Writing in English: Comparing the Beliefs and Practices of Mexican University Students with Conventions in English-Speaking Countries

Abstract

This study compares the beliefs and practices of Mexican university students with conventions of resume writing in English. Due to the nonexistence of a single definitive source on resume writing and the differences between conventions in English-speaking countries and in Mexico, students may make incorrect assumptions. Forty up-to-date, credible sources were surveyed to establish these conventions. A questionnaire on student beliefs and practices was given, and two student resumes were analyzed, one collected before a presentation of the conventions, and one after. The results show a lack of knowledge as to what constitutes an effective resume in English. The students were taught in school wrong elements and included them on their first resumes. However, these results must be interpreted according to the survey of forty sources, which revealed that English resume conventions are not as straightforward or uniform as one might expect. Students should not only be taught common conventions, but also conflicting viewpoints and the importance of tailoring their resumes to specific job offers. In this way, students can understand that there is no catch-all prescription for a resume, and that their own best judgement should be used for its composition.

Abstract

Automatic detection of Alzheimer's dementia by speech processing is enhanced when features of both the acoustic waveform and the content are extracted. Audio and text transcription have been widely used in health-related tasks, as spectral and prosodic speech features, as well as semantic and linguistic content, convey information about various diseases. Hence, this paper describes the joint work of the GTM-UVIGO research group and acceXible startup to the ADDReSS challenge at INTERSPEECH 2020. The submitted systems aim to detect patterns of Alzheimer's disease from both the patient's voice and message transcription. Six different systems have been built and compared: four of them are speech-based and the other two systems are text-based. The x-vector, i-vector, and statistical speech-based functionals features are evaluated. As a lower speaking fluency is a common pattern in patients with Alzheimer's disease, rhythmic features are also proposed. For transcription analysis, two systems are proposed: one uses GloVe word embedding features and the other uses several features extracted by language modelling. Several intra-modality and inter-modality score fusion strategies are investigated. The performance of single modality and multimodal systems are presented. Abstract

This article explores aspects of Stravinsky’s influence on some key composers of the Francophone post-war avant-garde, namely Pierre Boulez, Jean Barraqué, Hen­ri Pousseur and Michel Philippot. While Messiaen, Boulez and Barraqué build on Stravinsky’s rhythmic innovations, Pousseur focuses on the sonic complexity of the Russian composer’s scores. Boulez and Philippot praise Stravinsky’s unique instrumental groupings and later Boulez finds in certain of Stravinsky’s scores a renewed source of musical form, as well as the structural coherence afforded by Stravinsky’s use of pitch polarity.

23. The nuclear localization signal of CPSF6 governs post-nuclear import steps of HIV-1 infection.

Abstract

The early stages of HIV-1 infection include the trafficking of the viral core into the nucleus of infected cells. However, much remains to be understood about how HIV-1 accomplishes nuclear import and the consequences of the import pathways utilized on nuclear events. The host factor cleavage and polyadenylation specificity factor 6 (CPSF6) assists HIV-1 nuclear localization and post-entry integration targeting. Here, we used a CPSF6 truncation mutant lacking a functional nuclear localization signal (NLS), CPSF6-358, and appended heterologous NLSs to rescue nuclear localization. We show that some, but not all, NLSs drive CPSF6-358 into the nucleus. Interestingly, we found that some nuclear localized CPSF6-NLS chimeras supported inefficient HIV-1 infection. We found that HIV-1 still enters the nucleus in these cell lines but fails to traffic to speckle-associated domains (SPADs). Additionally, we show that HIV-1 fails to efficiently integrate in these cell lines. Collectively, our results demonstrate that the NLS of CPSF6 facilitates steps of HIV-1 infection subsequent to nuclear import and additionally identify the ability of canonical NLS sequences to influence cargo localization in the nucleus following nuclear import. Author summary: During HIV-1 infection, the viral capsid, which encloses the viral genome and essential proteins required for reverse transcription and integration, traffics towards the nucleus and enters through the nuclear pore complex (NPC). Following entry into the nucleus, reverse transcription is completed and viral capsid disassembles for integration of the viral DNA into a host chromosome. In this study, we investigated the role of the capsid-binding host factor CPSF6 in these events, specifically focusing on its nuclear localization signal (NLS) located at the protein's C-terminus. Swapping the NLS for heterologous NLSs from other proteins significantly impacted HIV-1's ability to infect cells. For NLSs that conveyed CPSF6 nuclear import, we further showed this defect in infection occurred at the level of viral DNA integration. This study highlights the importance of the NLS in CPSF6 to dictate nuclear import pathways that are congruent with functional HIV-1 infection. 30. Postnatal Neuronal Nogo-A Knockdown Decreased the Message of Glutamatergic Synaptic Proteins.

Abstract

It is well known that oligodendrocyte-associated Nogo-A protein is an important regulator of axonal outgrowth and an important inhibitor of functional recovery and anatomical plasticity after central nervous system (CNS) injury. Abundant studies of oligodendrocyte-associated Nogo-A function in the uninjured rodent have suggested a role in neuronal development and synaptic function. On the other hand, the roles of neuron-associated (i.e., neuronal) Nogo-A have not been fully investigated. We have previously shown that neuronal Nogo-A influence dendritic spine density and morphology in pyramidal neurons of the intact neocortex. To further examine the role of neuronal Nogo-A in this synaptic population, we designed an RNAi directed against Nogo-A, delivered to the developing rat sensorimotor cortex using a neurotropic viral vector adeno-associated virus (AAV) 2/8. We examined the transduced neocortex for molecules important for synaptic plasticity, including N-Methyl-D-Aspartate (NMDA) receptor subunits GRIN2A; glutamate receptor subunit epsilon-1 (NR2A), and GRIN2B; glutamate receptor subunit epsilon-2 (NR2B), as well as postsynaptic density-95 (PSD-95). Furthermore, we also determined the density of excitatory synapses by examining the presynaptic protein vesicular glutamate transporter 1 (vGLut1) as a marker for potential excitatory synapses. Our results showed that neuronal Nogo-A knockdown in postnatal pyramidal neurons of the sensorimotor cortex led to a significant decrease in NMDA receptor subunits NR2A and NR2B messenger RNA when examined as adults. However, there was no difference in PSD-95 expression in comparison to controls. In addition, the decrease in the number of vGlut1(+) puncta on branches of apical dendrites of pyramidal neurons indicated the loss of synapses that have a strong influence on direct current entering the dendrite. Taken together, these results indicate that neuronal Nogo-A may regulate synaptic plasticity by modulating the components of excitatory synapses. This finding represents a novel role in excitatory synaptic formation for neuronal Nogo-A in developing neurons of the uninjured CNS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The TRIM5α protein from rhesus macaques (rhTRIM5α) mediates a potent inhibition of HIV-1 infection via a mechanism that involves the abortive disassembly of the viral core. We have demonstrated that alpha-helical elements within the Linker 2 (L2) region, which lies between the SPRY domain and the Coiled-Coil domain, influence the potency of restriction. Here, we utilize single-molecule FRET analysis to reveal that the L2 region of the TRIM5α dimer undergoes dynamic conformational changes, which results in the displacement of L2 regions by 25 angstroms relative to each other. Analysis of restriction enhancing or abrogating mutations in the L2 region reveal that restriction defective mutants are unable to undergo dynamic conformational changes and do not assume compact, alpha-helical conformations in the L2 region. These data suggest a model in which conformational changes in the L2 region mediate displacement of CA bound SPRY domains to induce the destabilization of assembled capsid during restriction.

Abstract

Bayesian inference methods are applied within a Bayesian hierarchical modelling framework to the problems of joint state and parameter estimation, and of state forecasting. We explore and demonstrate the ideas in the context of a simple nonlinear marine biogeochemical model. A novel approach is proposed to the formulation of the stochastic process model, in which ecophysiological properties of plankton communities are represented by autoregressive stochastic processes. This approach captures the effects of changes in plankton communities over time, and it allows the incorporation of literature metadata on individual species into prior distributions for process model parameters. The approach is applied to a case study at Ocean Station Papa, using Particle Markov chain Monte Carlo computational techniques. The results suggest that, by drawing on objective prior information, it is possible to extract useful information about model state and a subset of parameters, and even to make useful long-term forecasts, based on sparse and noisy observations.

42. Analysis of Costs of Services/Supports for People with Developmental Disabilities for Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming, USA.

Abstract

A database was assembled from data collected on all people served by the Developmental Disabilities divisions of Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming, including state institutions and state-funded programs (n=5,928). Information included provider expenditures associated with each individual, allocations made by individual reimbursement rates, services/supports received, funding sources, and individual characteristics as measured by the Inventory for Client and Agency Planning. Results from the analysis found institutions had the highest costs. Although Home and Community-Based Service recipients experienced lower levels of independence than people funded with state money, their costs were higher. South Dakota's people had the highest independence scores. This was attributed to their relatively high utilization of supervised apartments and supported living. Wyoming's costs and rates were higher than those for the other two states, presumably a result of the "Weston v. Wyoming" lawsuit. Supported employment was less expensive than community facility-based daytime programs but this finding was not consistently found in all states. South Dakota, which had a relatively higher utilization of supported employment, also had significantly higher supported employment costs. Evidence substantiated a diseconomy of scale function, as costs increased steadily with agency size. (Contains 23 references.) (CR)

43. Are We Having Fun Yet? Hitting the Moving Target of Program Choice, Wyoming, USA.

Abstract

The changes in what people with developmental disabilities wanted and got for living and daytime settings in South Dakota and Wyoming during 1988 were compared to what they wanted and received in 2000. Although the percentage of people in their desired setting rose, there were substantial changes in the types of settings recommended over the years. The numbers of people for whom large residential facilities were recommended generally declined. Conversely, the recommendations for supported employment and supported living rose sharply. The barriers to people getting social and leisure activities were also analyzed. Data from Nebraska were added to the analyses. The Home and Community-Based Services expansion of services reduced some of the social barriers to community integration and independence and increased positive social activities for many of the 7,034 people served in Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming. South Dakota hit a high point in 1987, with 87 percent of its people getting the program they wanted, and is approaching that high with the current 83 percent rate. Wyoming reached a new all time high of 83-90 percent of its people getting the programs they wanted in 2000, while Nebraska's rate was 77-82 percent. (Contains 46 references.) (Author/CR)

44. Eight Models for Explaining States' Total Spending for People with Developmental Disabilities in the United States.

Abstract

This report investigated the financial expenditures of states for services for individuals with developmental disabilities and examined the factors that influenced the level of expenditure. Eight multiple-regression models are presented which explain 70 to 88 percent of the variation in states' total expenditures. In addition to the obvious relationships between spending for services for individuals with developmental disabilities and a state's total population and income, several additional factors were demonstrated to be important. Domestic migration was shown to have a significant negative relationship with spending; that is, states that are losing population have higher expenditures. History of litigation was also demonstrated to increase a state's spending. Providing supported living programs to a large number of people appears to have resulted in a substantial decrease in total spending. Increasing the numbers of people in any combination of ICF/MR and HCB waiver Medicaid services tended to increase spending. An alternative method of assessing fiscal effort is proposed and the concept of "alternative" services/supports of funding sources is questioned. Finally, a method for concurrently summarizing and displaying the effectiveness of delivering services and supports, and the cost-efficiency of providing those services/supports, is demonstrated. Abstract

As a result of a 1997 change in federal law, this on-going 5-year study evaluated the effects of elimination of some prior regulations on the employment choices of 854 Wyoming adults in the Medicaid Home and Community-Based Service Waiver program. The study examined who worked, who wanted to work, the average hours worked, the average percentage of work time spent in integrated settings, and the average dollars earned. It also examined the number of people in day habilitation, the average hours in day habilitation, and the average time people spent in integrated settings in the community. Early outcomes of this study indicate that the choice of each person about whether they want to work or not has had a great impact on activities chosen. Additionally, most of the people chose a lot of activity. The outcome of percentage of work integration is a function of a set of statistically significant personal characteristics of the people served and services they have chosen and used. The percentage of hours worked and dollars earned is related to the employment situation of each of Wyoming's counties. (DB)

48. An Examination of Teaching-Learning Methods for the Acquisition of Leadership Skills in Undergraduate Nursing

Abstract

Teaching leadership skills for the modern healthcare environment can be challenging. Nurse educators must plan for unforeseen changes in future healthcare environments, which are increasingly placing nurses in positions to lead interdisciplinary teams and solve complex problems related to quality and outcomes of health services. To prepare students for this challenge, nursing educators must find effective ways to teach leadership skills to future nurses. The challenge, however, is that there appears to be as many ideas about how to teach leadership as there are concepts about the nature of what leadership is. In the following study, undergraduate nursing students participated in a quasiexperimental, posttest-only survey that tested leadership outcomes following experiences in service learning and lecture-based activities. This survey compared leadership gains following these two learning methods and found compelling evidence to support the conclusion that service learning can produce greater gains in leadership when compared with classroom lecture.
