Abstract

As an alternative inertial confinement fusion scheme with predicted high energy gain and more robust designs, shock ignition requires a strong converging shock driven by a shaped pulse with a high-intensity spike at the end to ignite a pre-compressed fusion capsule. Understanding nonlinear laser-plasma instabilities in shock ignition conditions is crucial to assess and improve the laser-shock energy coupling. Recent experiments conducted on the OMEGA-EP laser facility have for the first time demonstrated that such instabilities can $\sim$100\% deplete the first 0.5 ns of the high-intensity laser pump. Analysis of the observed laser-generated blast wave suggests that this pump-depletion starts at 0.01--0.02 critical density and progresses to 0.1--0.2 critical density. This pump-depletion is also confirmed by the time-resolved stimulated Raman backscattering spectra. The dynamics of the pump-depletion can be explained by the breaking of ion-acoustic waves in stimulated Brillouin scattering. Such strong pump-depletion would inhibit the collisional laser energy absorption but may benefit the generation of hot electrons with moderate temperatures for electron shock ignition [Shang et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 119 195001 (2017)].

Abstract

Perturbations in the velocity profile of a laser-ablation-driven shock wave seeded by speckle in the spatial beam intensity (i.e., laser imprint) have been measured. Direct measurements of these velocity perturbations were recorded using a two-dimensional high-resolution velocimeter probing plastic material shocked by a 100-ps picket laser pulse from the OMEGA laser system. The measured results for experiments with one, two, and five overlapping beams incident on the target clearly demonstrate a reduction in long-wavelength ($>$25 um) perturbations with an increasing number of overlapping laser beams, consistent with theoretical expectations. These experimental measurements are crucial to validate radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of laser imprint for laser direct drive inertial confinement fusion research since they highlight the significant (factor of 3) underestimation of the level of seeded perturbation when the microphysics processes for initial plasma formation, such as multiphoton ionization are neglected., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

This paper describes a technique for identifying trends in performance degradation for inertial confinement fusion implosion experiments. It is based on reconstruction of the implosion core with a combination of low- and mid-mode asymmetries. This technique was applied to an ensemble of hydro-equivalent deuterium-tritium implosions on OMEGA that achieved inferred hot-spot pressures ~56+/-7 Gbar [S. Regan et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 025001 (2016)]. All the experimental observables pertaining to the core could be reconstructed simultaneously with the same combination of low and mid modes. This suggests that in addition to low modes, that can cause a degradation of the stagnation pressure, mid modes are present that reduce the size of the neuron and x-ray producing volume. The systematic analysis shows that asymmetries can cause an overestimation of the total areal density in these implosions. It is also found that an improvement in implosion symmetry resulting from correction of either the systematic mid or low modes would result in an increase of the hot-spot pressure from 56 Gbar to ~80 Gbar and could produce a burning plasma when the implosion core is extrapolated to an equivalent 1.9 MJ symmetric direct illumination [A. Abstract

In this paper, we explore magnetized liner inertial fusion (MagLIF) [S. A. Slutz et al., Phys. Plasmas 17, 056303 (2010)] using a semi-analytic model [R. D. McBride and S. A. Slutz, Phys. Plasmas 22, 052708 (2015)]. Specifically, we present simulation results from this model that: (a) illustrate the parameter space, energetics, and overall system efficiencies of MagLIF; (b) demonstrate the dependence of radiative loss rates on the radial fraction of the fuel that is preheated; (c) explore some of the recent experimental results of the MagLIF program at Sandia National Laboratories [M. 16. Measurement of articular joint cartilage by MRI

Abstract

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is increasingly used to assess damage and disease in articular joints. This Thesis describes improvements in hardware and pulse sequences, to facilitate the visualization and quantitation of articular cartilage in human and rabbit knees, and in interphalangeal (IP) finger joints. Work on the human knee focused on the acquisition of localised 3D data-sets from each compartment individually, using a surface coil in transmit/receive mode. The advantage of the increase spatial resolution from localised MRI, was illustrated by comparison of the resulting patella articular cartilage thickness measurements, with equivalent measurements based on 3D volume scans. Those results clearly demonstrated that low spatial resolution images can over-estimate articular cartilage thickness. Rabbit knees with induced 'Quinoline Arthropathy' (QA) and 'Rheumatoid Arthritis' (RA) were also imaged and by optimising the RF probe configuration, it was possible to improve the spatial resolution, as compared with literature reports. Articular cartilage visualisation of the normal and QA joints was optimum for MTC-subtraction images; edge detection maps of those joints clearly showed the articular cartilage boundaries for normal as well as the swollen articular cartilage. The late stage pathology of the RA joints when imaged prevented some contrast regimes from being fully assessed for articular cartilage visualisation. However, the high spatial resolution 3D acquisitions of these rabbit knees clearly demonstrated the full extent of the joint damage, and in particular the severity of bone erosions. Initially the finger work optimised the MRI acquisition and data processing protocols for simultaneously measuring the joint space thickness in 3 DIP and 3 PIP joints in one hand. The results illustrated both the sensitivity of the different statistical measurements and the potential for further evaluation. This work demonstrates the scope of MRI for quantitative analysis of articular cartilage. It also illustrates the benefits of optimising RF probes for the required region-of-interest (ROI) and pulse sequences for articular cartilage visualisation.
