14. Brief psychodynamic psychotherapy for adolescents and their families in crisis: a pilot study.

Abstract

The global rise in adolescent self-harm and suicidal behaviours has intensified the demand for mental health services in the UK. This has further strained already underfunded and understaffed resources, resulting in longer waiting times and increased emergency department visits among teenagers. To address the overwhelming need for effective community-based emergency support, a brief psychodynamic crisis therapeutic intervention was developed within a CAMHS adolescent crisis team, inspired by child psychotherapist Ruth Schmidt Neven’s work on time-limited psychotherapy with adolescents and their families. This 12-session intervention offers both individual therapy for the adolescent and sessions for their parents, along with regular family reviews. Two psychotherapists work closely together on each case – one with the young person, the other with the parents. The brief model views crises as opportunities for deeper understanding, moving beyond diagnostic and symptom-centred approaches, as well as standard risk management and safety-planning strategies, and underlines the centrality of parent involvement in adolescent crisis work. This paper outlines the intervention’s theoretical foundation, guiding principles, and practical design, and presents preliminary findings from a pilot study of 22 cases, run over two and a half years. Early results suggest broad potential for this psychodynamic crisis approach in various adolescent crises, and merit further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

15. Bringing local food education to workplaces: Assessing needs for a health and wellness program.

Abstract

Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Extension educators have a long history of providing education to help individuals, families, and communities. Since the 1980s, however, FCS has been described as at a crossroads, lacking a unified vision of how to maintain relevance in a changing society. FCS programs have had reduced enrollment and attendance, leaving FCS educators seeking new audiences. Many workplaces now have employee wellness and education programs that are an emerging opportunity for FCS educators. FCS is inherently interdisciplinary, bringing together many foodrelated topics such as cooking, nutrition education, and food preservation. This interdisciplinary focus makes local food systems an important opportunity for new FCS educational programs. Workplace community supported agriculture (CSA) programs, which connect local farmers and employees via employer-sponsored cost-offsets, are an emerging model increasingly adopted by employers to support employee health and wellness. Where they have been implemented, however, they have often been complemented by only limited education, in part due to lack of a formal local food--focused health and wellness curriculum. The purpose of this study was to gain information to guide the development of a local food health and wellness education program that would complement a workplace CSA program. The study assessed potential workplace wellness program participants' perceived knowledge, attitudes, and barriers to purchasing and cooking local food, and the types of information that would be most useful in the education program and participants' preferred program format. Respondents had positive attitudes about local food, but limited knowledge about how to purchase and prepare it. Respondents indicated that an education program that provided information on those topics, as well as information about unusual fruits and vegetables grown locally and how to reduce food waste would be most useful to them. Respondents preferred online program offerings during weekday lunchtimes. These findings provide guidance for designing a local food health and wellness education program tailored to this audience. Abstract

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive treatment method used for treating superficial skin lesions such as non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). The combination of light, a photo- sensitive molecule and oxygen results in selective tissue destruction. Even though PDT has resulted in many successful treatment outcomes, the treatment parameters such as required light dose and preferred light source have not yet been optimised. Since monitoring of the treatment progress is limited to surface observations, it is difficult to observe what is happening under the surface of the skin. In this thesis, the development of complex numerical modelling techniques is considered with the aim of increasing the understanding of how PDT works within the living skin tis- sue. In particular, the potential of using daylight as an alternative therapeutic light source is explored. Daylight PDT is associated with lower experienced pain and has the potential of reducing pressure on the clinics as well as the number of treatment occasions. A Monte Carlo radiation transfer (MCRT) model was developed to track photon propagation during treatment. The first theoretical investigation of daylight PDT is presented where the results indicate a potential treatment depth of over 2 mm, which is sufficient for treating superficial skin cancer lesions. Additional models are developed, which consider the drug interaction and the diffusion of the drug. To include different patient characteristics and more detailed skin models, multi-layered tissue as well as complex three dimensional tumour tissues are included within the MCRT model framework. There is no such thing as a generic patient, making it difficult to generate standardised treatment protocols. The research performed in this thesis provides further insights into light interaction with skin tissue for different patient and treatment characteristics, which is a vital step towards achieving more individualised treatment regimes.

24. Translation and the reader : a survey of British book group members' attitudes towards translation

Abstract

In commercial book translation, the reader is the end-user of the translated text; it is for his or her benefit that the translation has been produced, and it is the reading public whose money ultimately goes towards paying the translator‘s wages. Nonetheless, in Translation Studies, far more attention has been paid to the processes of translation or the finished translation product (see Saldanha and O‘Brien 2013) than to the users of such products, with reader-based studies few and far between. For this reason, there is little empirical evidence that the 'effects' and 'meanings' discussed by scholars in analyses of translated texts have any meaningful existence in actual reading situations, while the opinions and preferences of readers with regards to translation are virtually unknown (Leppihalme 1997; Kruger 2013). The present thesis therefore takes a first step in examining the attitudes of non-professional readers (that is, readers who are reading for pleasure rather than for criticism or analytical purposes) to translated books. The project reports on members of book groups in four UK cities, whose thoughts and opinions regarding translated texts, the act of translation and the role of translators were gathered using a written questionnaire and a series of interviews. Thus, the study combines a Descriptive Translation Studies approach with survey research. The results of this survey suggest that many readers have limited knowledge about what translation involves, as well as a certain ambivalence towards the finer details of the translation process. In addition, although they reveal a vigorous interest in considering and discussing linguistic, cultural and translation-related issues, readers‘ primary concern when presented with a text, whether translated or not, is the immediate reading experience. It is hoped that these findings will be useful in informing future approaches to the creation and dissemination of translated books to the British reading public.
