We present a new model to estimate the performance of a wind turbine operating in misaligned conditions. The model is based on the classic momentum and lifting-line theories, considering a misaligned rotor as a lifting wing of finite span, and accounts for the combined effects of both yaw and uptilt angles. Improving on the classical empirical cosine law in widespread use, the new model reveals the dependency of power not only on the misalignment angle, but also on some rotor design parameters and – crucially – on the way a rotor is governed when it is yawed out of the wind. We show how the model can be readily integrated with arbitrary control laws below, above, and around the rated wind speed. Additionally, the model also shows that a sheared inflow is responsible for the observed lack of symmetry for positive and negative misalignment angles. Notwithstanding its simplicity and insignificant computational cost, the new proposed approach is in excellent agreement with large eddy simulations (LESs) and wind tunnel experiments. Building on the new model, we derive the optimal control strategy for maximizing power on a misaligned rotor. Additionally, we maximize the total power of a cluster of two turbines by wake steering, improving on the solution based on the cosine law.

Recently carbide free bainitic steels, with microstructure consisting in nanoscaled bainitic ferrite plates and high carbon-enriched austenite, have been developed. These steels have found commercial use in manufacturing engineering components, nevertheless, their high carbon concentration poses a limitation as they cannot be welded, restricting their potential applications, therefore the actual research has shifted to the investigation to medium carbon steels. In this work, Butt weld – V groove weldment have been realized with a novel medium carbon high silicon carbide-free bainitic steel by means GMAW and GTAW. Optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the microstructures of both the fusion and heat affected zone. Dilatometry was utilized to study the phase transformations during post-welding heat treatment. Tensile and micro-hardness tests were carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties in the as-weld state after post-welding heat treatment. The analysis shows the possibility to obtain high strength weldments with high integrity and high strength (>1 GPa) coupled with reasonable ductility and the absence of cold or hot cracking phenomena.

This article presents the results of an experimental wind tunnel study which investigates a new control strategy named Helix. The Helix control employs individual pitch control for sinusoidally varying yaw and tilt moments to induce an additional rotational component in the wake, aiming to enhance wake mixing. The experiments are conducted in a closed-loop wind tunnel under low-turbulence conditions to emphasize wake effects. Highly sensorized model wind turbines with control capabilities similar to full-scale machines are employed in a two-turbine setup to assess wake recovery potential and explore loads on both upstream and downstream turbines. In a single-turbine study, detailed wake measurements are carried out using a fast-response five-hole pressure probe. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in energy content within the wake, with distinct peaks for clockwise and counterclockwise movements at Strouhal numbers of approximately 0.47. Both upstream and downstream turbine dynamic equivalent loads increase when applying the Helix control. The time-averaged wake flow streamwise velocity and rms value reveal a faster wake recovery for actuated cases in comparison to the baseline. Phase-locked results with azimuthal position display a leapfrogging behavior in the baseline case in contrast to the actuated cases, where distorted shedding structures in the longitudinal direction are observed due to a changed thrust coefficient and an accompanying lateral vortex shedding location. Additionally, phase-locked results with the additional frequency reveal a tip vortex meandering, which enhances faster wake recovery. Comparing the Helix cases with clockwise and counterclockwise rotations, the latter exhibits slightly higher gains and faster wake recovery. This difference is attributed to Helix' additional rotational component acting in either the same or the opposite direction as the wake rotation. Overall, both Helix cases exhibit significantly faster wake recovery compared to the baseline, indicating the potential of this technique for improved wind farm control.

Digital codicology is still an emerging discipline with many open technical and methodological issues. In fact, not all the features of books can be digitally acquired with traditional methods, which makes book digitization a complex process that requires the adoption of advanced digitization and imaging techniques and modeling processes in order to preserve the heterogeneity and granularity of original materials and satisfy the research needs of scholars such as bibliographers, codicologists, conservators, and cultural heritage scientists. The physicality and materiality of books provide information as much as the text they contain, and only through understanding the remediation process and the specific objectives we want to achieve with digital surrogates, can we isolate the qualities necessary for a particular interpretation, thus creating Digital Cultural Objects that enable new digital research practices. The production of more comprehensive digital surrogates that combine untransferable features with traditional information could allow the implementation of algorithmic reading methodologies for book objects, leading to digital codicology.

Levodopa is the gold standard for the symptomatic treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). There are well documented motor and non-motor fluctuations, however, that occur almost inevitably once levodopa is started after a variable period in people with PD. Whilst brain neurodegenerative processes play a part in the pathogenesis of these fluctuations, a range of barriers across the gastrointestinal (GI) tract can alter levodopa pharmacokinetics, ultimately contributing to non-optimal levodopa response and symptoms fluctuations. GI barriers to levodopa transport and absorption include dysphagia, delayed gastric emptying, constipation, Helicobacter pylori infection, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and gut dysbiosis. In addition, a protein-rich diet and concomitant medication intake can further alter levodopa pharmacokinetics. This can result in unpredictable or sub-optimal levodopa response, 'delayed on' or 'no on' phenomena. In this narrative review, we provided an overview on the plethora of GI obstacles to levodopa transport and absorption in PD and their implications on levodopa pharmacokinetics and development of motor fluctuations. In addition, management strategies to address GI dysfunction in PD are highlighted, including use of non-oral therapies to bypass the GI tract.

BackgroundThe endometrium holds a crucial role in reproduction by supporting blastocyst adhesion, cytotrophoblast invasion and fetal development. Among the various uterine disorders, endometritis, particularly chronic endometritis (CE), has gained attention due to its association with adverse reproductive outcomes (recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), recurrent implantation failure (RIF), and infertility). The association between CE and adverse reproductive outcomes stresses the necessity for comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to optimize fertility outcomes and support individuals in their journey towards parenthood.AimTo explore the relationship between CE and reproductive disorders.MethodsFollowing PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review and meta-analysis using published data from 1990 to 2024 were carried out.ResultsA population of 1,038 women was included. Regarding CE-infertility association, a positive correlation was found, with 19.46% CE rate in infertile women compared to 7.7% in controls (OR: 2.96, 95% CI 1.53-5.72, p 0.001). No significant association was observed between RIF and CE (OR: 1.10, 95% CI 0.26-4.61, p 0.90), CE rates in both groups were relatively comparable, with 6.35% in women with RIF and 5.8% in controls. On the opposite, a strong association between CE and RPL was found, reporting a CE rate of 37.6% in RPL cases compared to 16.4% in controls (OR: 3.59, 95% CI 2.46-5.24, p < 0.00001).ConclusionsCE appears to be associated to infertility and RPL, while no significant association was noted in cases of RIF.Systematic review registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/#recordDetails PROSPERO, identifier CRD42024541879.

Additive manufacturing techniques have gone beyond their reputation for rapid prototype production and are increasingly adopted for the manufacture of functional components comprising high-end materials and intricate lattice structures. Silicon nitride, renowned for its exceptional mechanical properties and thermal stability, has emerged as a promising candidate for lightweight structural applications. Nonetheless, its high refractive index and density have limited the fabrication of highly complex structures using extrusion and photopolymerization based techniques. In this work, a highly reactive silicon nitride-based ink with high solid loading is developed for the fabrication of ultra-lightweight, truss-based structures. By employing a robot UV-assisted direct ink writing process, it is possible to control the printing head orientation, thus overcoming the limited curing depth of silicon nitride-based inks. The failure behavior of the sintered lattice beam structures under 4-point bending loading has been modeled by applying a linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) based approach to the results of finite element (FE) simulations.

Abstract Climate action to achieve the Paris Agreement should respect the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Here, we use an integrated assessment modelling framework comprising nine climate policy models and quantify the impacts of decarbonisation pathways on Sustainable Development Goals in the European Union at regional and national levels. We show that scenario-consistent assumptions of future socio-economic trends and current climate policies would improve energy- and carbon-related aspects of sustainability and reduce inequalities. Ambitious net-zero emissions pathways would further improve health and agricultural productivity. Furthermore, countries currently lagging in achieving sustainable development goals would see the greatest benefits from ambitious climate action. Negative socio-economic impacts from climate action on poverty, hunger, and economic growth will require specific corrective policies. While our analysis does not quantify the negative effects of less ambitious climate policy, it demonstrates where co-benefits and trade-offs of greenhouse gas mitigation and sustainable development agenda exist and can guide policy formulation.

In the European Union, Occupational Safety and Health legislation generally refers to European Regulation (CE) n. 1272/2008 to define and classify carcinogens of concern for occupational risk assessment and exposure assessment. In Europe, the current reference is Directive (UE) 2022/431, regarding carcinogen, mutagen, and reprotoxic agent (CMR) exposure. However, at the worldwide level, different classification approaches are used to establish carcinogenicity of substances and it is often difficult to compare the classifications of carcinogenicity (CoCs) proposed by different international bodies. This study aims to investigate a list of carcinogens of concern in occupational settings based on the CLP (Classification Labelling Packaging) CoC and to create a tool that allows a rapid translation–comparison of some international CoCs with the reference one. CoCs proposed by various sources were consulted and used to apply a translation method, to favor an alignment of different CoCs according to a reference. Results outlined that, considering diverse sources, CoCs can result in different classifications of the same chemicals. Overall, this may have implications for the hazard assessment process, which is the base of risk assessment. The proposed tool is expected to help risk assessors in the occupational field when it is needed to have a comparison with different CoC systems.

ABSTRACTThe current land cover (LC) mapping paradigm relies on automatic satellite imagery classification, predominantly through supervised methods, which depend on training data to calibrate classification algorithms. Hence, training data have a critical influence on classification accuracy. Although research on specific aspects of training data in the LC classification context exists, a study that organizes and synthetizes the multiplicity of aspects and findings of these researches is needed. In this article, we review the training data used for LC classification of satellite imagery. A protocol of identification and selection of relevant documents was followed, resulting in 114 peer-reviewed studies included. Main research topics were identified and documents were characterized according to their contribution to each topic, which allowed uncovering subtopics and categories and synthetizing the main findings regarding different aspects of the training dataset. The analysis found four research topics, namely construction of the training dataset, sample quality, sampling design and advanced learning techniques. Subtopics included sample collection method, sample cleaning procedures, sample size, sampling method, class balance and distribution, among others. A summary of the main findings and approaches provided an overview of the research in this area, which may serve as a starting point for new LC mapping initiatives.

Background: Gastrointestinal dysfunction has emerged as a prominent early feature of Parkinson's Disease, shedding new light on the pivotal role of the enteric nervous system in its pathophysiology. However, the role of immune-cell clusters and inflammatory and glial markers in the gut pathogenetic process needs further elucidation. Objectives: We aimed to study duodenum tissue samples to characterize PD's enteric nervous system pathology further. Twenty patients with advanced PD, six with early PD, and 18 matched controls were included in the PADUA-CESNE cohort. Methods: Duodenal biopsies from 26 patients with early to advanced stage PD and 18 age-matched HCs were evaluated for the presence of surface markers (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD20+, CD68+, HLA-DR), presence of misfolded alpha-synuclein and enteric glial alteration (GFAP). Correlation of immulogic pattern and clinical characteristic were analyzed. Results: The findings validate that in patients with Parkinson's Disease, the activation and reactive gliosis are linked to the neurodegeneration triggered by the presence of misfolded alpha-synuclein in the enteric nervous system. This process intensifies from the initial to the advanced stages of the disease. The clusters of T- and B-lymphocytes in the enteric system, along with the overall expression of HLA-DR in antigen-presenting cells, exceeded those in the control group. Conversely, no differences in terms of macrophage populations were found. Conclusions: These findings broaden our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the enteric nervous system's involvement in PD and point to the gastrointestinal system as a potential therapeutic target, especially in the early stages of the disease. Moreover, our results propose a role of T- and B-lymphocytes in maintaining inflammation and ultimately influencing alpha-synuclein misfolding and aggregation.

The purpose of this article is to uncover what makes learning enjoyable for Generation Z college students (born 1995-2010) in the United States (U.S.) and Brazil. Qualitative data from 1,282 participants in the U.S. and 775 participants in Brazil were analyzed independently and for comparison using content analysis and thematic coding. The results of this study show both similarities and differences between these two populations. Both groups enjoy learning that is interesting, inspiring, relevant, and engaging. U.S. students enjoy knowledge acquisition, learning for societal impact, and having instructors who are competent and relatable. Brazil students, on the other hand, enjoy peer learning. While these results align with previous research findings on preferences for learning and cultural nuances, it is important to note that studies on Generation Z college students and learning are sparse. Thus, understanding this generational cohort in higher education is paramount for both informing and supporting individual pedagogical practices and shaping training initiatives on teaching and learning in higher education. In addition, given the impact of globalization on technology, commerce, entertainment, and information, uncovering the similarities in how young people from different cultures perceive learning may have global implications on research, training, and individual instruction in a more macro and universal way.

Recent advances in satellite data availability, computing storage and processing power introduced a new land cover monitoring paradigm, settled on a continuous and timely identification of changes. The Continuous Change Detection and Classification (CCDC) algorithm has emerged as a powerful tool for continuous monitoring, being noteworthy for its ability to process high temporal frequency satellite data with components of seasonality, trend and break. Studies using CCDC were mostly limited to Landsat data, which offer lower spatial and temporal resolution in comparison to Sentinel-2 data. Therefore, our study aims to explore the potential of CCDC with Sentinel-2 data. For that purpose, an extensive reference dataset was developed for change detection accuracy assessment, comprising 290 sites of 200 m radius in a disturbance prone region in Central Portugal, ensuring an adequate representation of areas of vegetation loss. We focused on two specific forest species from this region, eucalyptus and maritime pine. Change date was determined through interpretation of orthophotos and satellite time series. We explored determinant aspects to CCDC performance, namely cloud and cloud shadow masking, algorithm parameterization, use of distinct vegetation indices and detection timeliness. Optimal accuracy was achieved with s2cloudless masking, lambda of 200, chi-square of 0.999, minYears of 1 and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index. We computed the time lag vs omission error curve, showing comparable results (omission error rate close to 20 % was obtained with a time lag from 30 to 40 days) to methods designed to achieve near-real-time detection. Detections were spatially coherent, with patches of vegetation loss detected only with minor errors, mostly located in polygon borders. Disturbances in the first months resulted in poor model fitting, which undermined detection performance in some cases. Overall, results demonstrated how CCDC and Sentinel-2 data can be used to successfully monitor vegetation loss in a timely manner, especially as the satellite’s time series grows.

This study aims to delve deeper into the relationship between the professional activities carried out in restaurant kitchens and some key air pollutants. The ultrafine particles (UFPs), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOCs) and formaldehyde (HCHO) indoor air concentrations were determined using real-time monitors. Simultaneously, the kitchen environment was characterized using video recordings with the aim to retrieve information pertaining to cooking, cookware washing and surface cleaning activities. Statistical analysis was carried out separately for the winter and summer campaigns. The obtained results confirmed that the professional activities carried out in restaurant kitchens had a significant impact on the concentrations of all the selected pollutants. Specifically, this study revealed the following key results: (i) indoor UFPs and NO2 concentrations were significantly higher during cooking than during washing activities (e.g., about +60% frying vs. handwashing and dishwasher running), mainly in the winter; (ii) washing activity had a statistically significant impact on the TVOC (+39% on average) and HCHO (+67% on average) concentrations compared to other activities; (iii) some specific sources of short-term pollutant emissions have been identified, such as the different types of cooking and opening the dishwasher; and (iv) in some restaurants, a clear time-dependent relationship between O3 and UFP, TVOC and HCHO has been observed, underlining the occurrence of ozonolysis reactions.

The primary intervention for pre-eclampsia (PE) remains iatrogenic delivery, which can be very preterm and not optimal for the fetus. Although many efforts have been made to prevent and manage PE, there is still a dearth of drugs to treat its pathophysiological progression. Pravastatin (PRA), a hydrophilic statin, has gained interest for the prevention and treatment of PE. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the ability of PRA to modulate factors involved in placentation, such as Epidermal Growth Factor-Like Domain 7 (EGFL7), in human chorionic villous culture from healthy controls and women with PE. A total of 18 women were enrolled: 10 controls and 8 cases. Chorionic villous explants were maintained in culture for 24 h with or without 10 μM Pravastatin, and the expression of EGFL7 and NOTCH1 pathway members was evaluated by qRT-PCR and Western blot analysis. The rationale of the present study was to establish an ex vivo model to identify potential different responses to PRA treatment of chorionic villous explants in order to clarify the molecular mechanism of PRA in the prevention and treatment of PE and to predict whether there are specific clinical conditions that modulate the response to the drug treatment. Within PE patients, two different groups were identified: the high responders, whose villous cultures exhibit significantly increased expressions of the EGFL7 and Notch pathways after PRA incubation; and the low responders, who are high-risk PE patients in which prophylaxis failed to prevent PE and PRA was not able to modulate EGFL7 expression. In conclusion, we identified EGFL7 as a new factor regulated by PRA, placing interest in early discrimination between low- and high- risk women, in which the well-known pharmacological prophylaxis seems to be ineffective, and to explore new potential prevention strategies.

In Parkinson’s disease, neuroinflammation is a double-edged sword; when inflammation occurs it can have harmful effects, despite its important role in battling infections and healing tissue. Once triggered by microglia, astrocytes acquire a reactive state and shift from supporting the survival of neurons to causing their destruction. Activated microglia and Proteinase-activated receptor-2 (PAR2) are key points in the regulation of neuroinflammation. 1-Piperidin Propionic Acid (1-PPA) has been recently described as a novel inhibitor of PAR2. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of 1-PPA in neuroinflammation and microglial activation in Parkinson’s disease. Protein aggregates and PAR2 expression were analyzed using Thioflavin S assay and immunofluorescence in cultured human fibroblasts from Parkinson’s patients, treated or untreated with 1-PPA. A significant decrease in amyloid aggregates was observed after 1-PPA treatment in all patients. A parallel decrease in PAR2 expression, which was higher in sporadic Parkinson’s patients, was also observed both at the transcriptional and protein level. In addition, in mouse LPS-activated microglia, the inflammatory profile was significantly downregulated after 1-PPA treatment, with a remarkable decrease in IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, together with a decreased expression of PAR2. In conclusion, 1-PPA determines the reduction in neuroglia inflammation and amyloid aggregates formation, suggesting that the pharmacological inhibition of PAR2 could be proposed as a novel strategy to control neuroinflammation.

Introduction: Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have been engineered and are largely used in material science and industry. This large and increasing use justifies a careful study about the toxicity of this material for human subjects. The concerns regard also the reproductive toxicity and the fetotoxicity.Materials and methods: The effect of the exposure to ZnO NPs on the cochlear function was studied in a group of pregnant CD1 mice and in their offspring. This study is part of a larger toxicological study about the toxicity of ZnO NPs during pregnancy. Four groups were analyzed and compared, exposed and non-exposed dams and their offspring. The cochlear function was quantitatively assessed by means of Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs).Results and discussion: A large statistically significant difference was found between the non-exposed dams offspring and the exposed dams offspring (p = 1.6 · 10−3), whose DPOAE levels were significantly lower than those of non-exposed dams offspring and comparable to those of the adults. The DPOAE levels of the exposed and non-exposed dams were very low and not significantly different. This occurrence is related to the fact that these mice encounter a rapid aging process.Conclusion: Our findings show that maternal exposure to ZnO NPs does not reflect in overt toxicity on fetal development nor impair offspring birth, however it may damage the nervous tissue of the inner ear in the offspring. Other studies should confirm this result and identify the mechanisms through which ZnO NPs may affect ear development.
