The Large Underground Xenon (LUX) collaboration has designed and constructed a dual-phase xenon detector, in order to conduct a search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles(WIMPs), a leading dark matter candidate. The goal of the LUX detector is to clearly detect (or exclude) WIMPS with a spin independent cross section per nucleon of $2\times 10^{-46}$ cm$^{2}$, equivalent to $\sim$1 event/100 kg/month in the inner 100-kg fiducial volume (FV) of the 370-kg detector. The overall background goals are set to have $<$1 background events characterized as possible WIMPs in the FV in 300 days of running. We perform the scanning tunneling spectroscopy based superconductor-vacuum-superconductor analogue to the seminal McMillan and Rowell superconductor-insulator-superconductor device study of phonons in the archetypal elemental superconductor Pb [W. L. McMillan and J. M. Rowell, Phys. Rev. Lett. 14, 108 (1965)]. We invert this spectroscopic data utilizing strong-coupling Eliashberg theory to obtain a local {\alpha}^2F({\omega}) and find broad underlying agreement with the pioneering results, highlighted by previously unobserved electron-hole asymmetries and new fine structure which we discuss in terms of both conventional and unconventional superconducting bosonics.

- Abstract
This report focuses on the experience of integration as perceived in the Portland, Oregon, Suburban Transfer Program, which completed its first year of operation in 1969. The voluntary plan buses 98 black students in grades one to six from inner-city schools to suburban districts. Open-ended, indepth interviews were taped with students, parents, principals, and teachers. The study includes a description of the interview procedures, a general overview of interview results, an analysis of the data, and a summary listing of findings and recommendations. The appendix includes a a summary of the interview responses systematically divided into views of the busing program, perceptions of teachers and teaching, and expectations for the future. (MF)

International audience; In Mammals, microglial cells are considered as the resident immune cells in central nervous system (CNS). Many studies demonstrated that, after injury, these cells are activated and recruited at the lesion site. Leech microglia present a similar pattern of microglial activation and migration upon experimental lesion of CNS. This activation is associated with the release of a large amount of extracellular vesicles (EVs). We collected EVs released by microglia primary culture and compared two different protocols of isolation: one with differential ultracentrifugation (UC) and one using an additional Optiprep™ Density Gradient (ODG) ultracentrifugation. Nanoparticles tracking analysis (NTA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to assess vesicles size and morphology. The protein content of isolated EVs was assessed by mass spectrometry approaches. Results showed the presence of EV-specific proteins in both procedures. The extensive proteomic analysis of each single ODG fractions confirmed the efficiency of this protocol in limiting the presence of co-isolated proteins aggregates and other membranous particles during vesicles isolation. The present study permitted for the first time the characterisation of microglial EV protein content in an annelid model. Interestingly, an important amount of proteins found in leech vesicles was previously described in EV-specific databases. Finally, purified EVs were assessed for neurotrophic activity and promote neurites outgrowth on primary cultured neurons.

- Abstract
The integration of telecommunications technology into higher education has proceeded slowly for several reasons. Faculty members tend not to want to use instructional programs produced by others; educators who get involved in producing their own programs must cooperate with a whole group of other experts who have their own ideas concerning the preparation of materials, and who may have had bad experiences dealing with educators in the past; and the regulations of the Federal Communications Commission prevent academic institutions from exercising full control over broadcasting facilities with which they are often affiliated. Still, colleges and universities are recognizing that the advantages of using television are steadily increasing. A successful marriage of education and telecommunications can be achieved if telecommunications staffs adopt an attitude of commitment to educational goals and cooperation and communication with educators; if university administrators actively support the development of telecommunications capabilities; and if faculty members accept and utilize the expertise of telecommunications specialists in an open way. This document presents guidelines for creating the atmosphere in which education and telecommunications can most benefit each other, and concludes with a brief description of the successful integration of education and telecommunications at West Virginia University. Search for the lepton-flavour violating decay D0 → e±μ∓ A search for the lepton-flavour violating decay D0 → e±μ∓ is made with a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1 of proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment. Candidate D0 mesons are selected using the decay D∗+ → D0π+ and the D0 → e±μ∓ branching fraction is measured using the decay mode D0 → K−π+ as a normalization channel. No significant excess of D0 → e±μ∓ candidates over the expected background is seen, and a limit is set on the branching fraction, 𝓑(D0 → e±μ∓) < 1.3 × 10−8, at 90% confidence level. This is an order of magnitude lower than the previous limit and it further constrains the parameter space in some leptoquark models and in supersymmetric models with R-parity violation.

© 2015 American Chemical Society. Polarized aluminum K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy and first-principles calculations were used to probe electronic structure in a series of (BDI)Al, (BDI)AlX2, and (BDI)AlR2 coordination compounds (X = F, Cl, I; R = H, Me; BDI = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl-β-diketiminate). Spectral interpretations were guided by examination of the calculated transition energies and polarization-dependent oscillator strengths, which agreed well with the XANES spectroscopy measurements. Pre-edge features were assigned to transitions associated with the Al 3p orbitals involved in metal-ligand bonding. Qualitative trends in Al 1s core energy and valence orbital occupation were established through a systematic comparison of excited states derived from Al 3p orbitals with similar symmetries in a molecular orbital framework. These trends suggested that the higher transition energies observed for (BDI)AlX2 systems with more electronegative X1- ligands could be ascribed to a decrease in electron density around the aluminum atom, which causes an increase in the attractive potential of the Al nucleus and concomitant increase in the binding energy of the Al 1s core orbitals. For (BDI)Al and (BDI)AlH2 the experimental Al K-edge XANES spectra and spectra calculated using the eXcited electron and Core-Hole (XCH) approach had nearly identical energies for transitions to final state orbitals of similar composition and symmetry. These results implied that the charge distributions about the aluminum atoms in (BDI)Al and (BDI)AlH2 are similar relative to the (BDI)AlX2 and (BDI)AlMe2 compounds, despite having different formal oxidation states of +1 and +3, respectively. However, (BDI)Al was unique in that it exhibited a low-energy feature that was attributed to transitions into a low-lying p-orbital of b1 symmetry that is localized on Al and orthogonal to the (BDI)Al plane. The presence of this low-energy unoccupied molecular orbital on electron-rich (BDI)Al distinguishes its valence electronic structure from that of the formally trivalent compounds (BDI)AlX2 and (BDI)AlR2. The work shows that Al K-edge XANES spectroscopy can be used to provide valuable insight into electronic structure and reactivity relationships for main-group coordination compounds.
