The association of ions in electrolyte solutions at very low concentration and low temperature is studied using computer simulations and quasi-chemical ion-pairing theory. The specific case of the restricted primitive model (charged hard spheres) is considered. Specialised simulation techniques are employed that lead to efficient sampling of the arrangements and distributions of clusters and free ions, even at conditions corresponding to nanomolar solutions of simple salts in solvents with dielectric constants in the range 5-10, as used in recent experimental work on charged-colloid sus- pensions. A direct comparison is effected between theory and simulation using a variety of clustering criteria and theoretical approximations. It is shown that conventional distance-based cluster criteria can give erroneous results. A reliable set of theoretical and simulation estimators for the degree of association is proposed. The ion-pairing theory is then compared to experimental results for salt solutions in low-polarity solvents. The agreement is excellent, and on this basis some calculations are made for the screening lengths which will figure in the treatment of colloid-colloid interactions in such solutions. The accord with available experimental results is complete.

We use lattice Boltzmann simulations, in conjunction with Ewald summation methods, to investigate the role of hydrodynamic interactions in colloidal suspensions of dipolar particles, such as ferrofluids. Our work addresses volume fractions $\phi$ of up to 0.20 and dimensionless dipolar interaction parameters $\lambda$ of up to 8. We compare quantitatively with Brownian dynamics simulations, in which many-body hydrodynamic interactions are absent. Monte Carlo data are also used to check the accuracy of static properties measured with the lattice Boltzmann technique. At equilibrium, hydrodynamic interactions slow down both the long-time and the short-time decays of the intermediate scattering function $S(q,t)$, for wavevectors close to the peak of the static structure factor $S(q)$, by a factor of roughly two. The long-time slowing is diminished at high interaction strengths whereas the short-time slowing (quantified via the hydrodynamic factor $H(q)$) is less affected by the dipolar interactions, despite their strong effect on the pair distribution function arising from cluster formation. Cluster formation is also studied in transient data following a quench from $\lambda = 0$; hydrodynamic interactions slow the formation rate, again by a factor of roughly two.

The problem of successfully simulating ionic fluids at low temperature and low density states is well known in the simulation literature: using conventional methods, the system is not able to equilibrate rapidly due to the presence of strongly associated cation-anion pairs. In this manuscript we present a numerical method for speeding up computer simulations of the restricted primitive model (RPM) at low temperatures (around the critical temperature) and at very low densities (down to $10^{-10}\sigma^{-3}$, where $\sigma$ is the ion diameter). Experimentally, this regime corresponds to typical concentrations of electrolytes in nonaqueous solvents. As far as we are aware, this is the first time that the RPM has been equilibrated at such extremely low concentrations. More generally, this method could be used to equilibrate other systems that form aggregates at low concentrations.

The kinetics of aggregation in a monolayer of magnetic particles are studied using stochastic dynamics computer simulations. At low densities (<8% coverage) the equilibrium structure is made up of chains and rings; the primary mechanisms by which these motifs form are described. At higher densities (>15% coverage), we observe large transient concentrations of Y-shaped and X-shaped defects that ultimately give way to an extended, labyrinthine network. Our results suggest that a defect mechanism -- such as that proposed by Tlusty and Safran, Science 290, 1328 (2000) -- could drive a metastable phase separation in two dimensions., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Motivated by the diversity and complexity of two-dimensional crystals formed by triangular proteins and protein trimers, we have investigated the structures and phase behavior of hard-disk trimers. In order to mimic specific binding interactions, each trimer possesses on `attractive' disk which can interact with similar disks on other trimers via an attractive square-well potential. At low density and low temperature, the fluid phase mainly consists of tetramers, pentamers, or hexamers. Hexamers provide the structural motif for a high-density, low-temperature periodic solid phase, but we also identify a metastable periodic structure based on a tetramer motif. At high density there is a transition between orientationally ordered and disordered solid phases. The connections between simulated structures and those of 2D protein crystals -- as seen in electron microscopy -- are briefly discussed., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Monte Carlo computer simulations are used to study transient cavities and the solvation of hard-spheroid solutes in dipolar hard sphere solvents. The probability distribution of spheroidal cavities in the solvent is shown to be well described by a Gaussian function, and the variations of fit parameters with cavity elongation and solvent properties are analyzed. The excess chemical potentials of hard-spheroid solutes with aspect ratios $x$ in the range $1/5 \leq x \leq 5$, and with volumes between one and twenty times that of a solvent molecule, are presented. It is shown that for a given molecular volume and solvent dipole moment (or temperature) a spherical solute has the lowest excess chemical potential and hence the highest solubility, while a prolate solute with aspect ratio $x$ should be more soluble than an oblate solute with aspect ratio $1/x$. For a given solute molecule, the excess chemical potential increases with increasing temperature; this same trend is observed in the case of hydrophobic solvation. To help interpret the simulation results, comparison is made with a scaled-particle theory that requires prior knowledge of a solute-solvent interfacial tension and the pure-solvent equation of state, which parameters are obtained from simulation results for spherical solutes. The effects of dipolar interactions and molecular flexibility on the structure and phase behavior of bent-core molecular fluids are studied using Monte Carlo computer simulations. Some calculations of flexoelectric coefficients are also reported. The rigid cores of the model molecules consist of either five or seven soft spheres arranged in a `V' shape with external bend angle $\gamma$. With purely repulsive sphere-sphere interactions and $\gamma=0^\circ$ (linear molecules) the seven-sphere model exhibits isotropic, uniaxial nematic, smectic-A, and tilted phases. With $\gamma \geq 20^\circ$ the smectic-A phase disappears, while the system with $\gamma \geq 40^\circ$ shows a direct tilted smectic--isotropic fluid transition. The addition of electrostatic interactions between transverse dipole moments on the apical spheres is generally seen to reduce the degree of tilt in the smectic and solid phases, destabilize the nematic and smectic-A phases of linear molecules, and destabilize the tilted smectic-B phase of bent-core molecules. The effects of adding three-segment flexible tails to the ends of five-sphere bent-core molecules are examined using configurational-bias Monte Carlo simulations. Only isotropic and smectic phases are observed. On the one hand, molecular flexibility gives rise to pronounced fluctuations in the smectic-layer structure, bringing the simulated system in better correspondence with real materials; on the other hand, the smectic phase shows almost no tilt. Lastly, the flexoelectric coefficients of various nematic phases -- with and without attractive sphere-sphere interactions -- are presented. The worldwide effort to grow nanotechnology, rather than use lithography, focuses on diatoms, single cell eukaryotic algae with ornate silica shells, which can be replaced by oxides and ceramics, or reduced to elemental silicon, to create complex nanostructures with compositions of industrial and electronics importance. Diatoms produce an enormous variety of structures, some of which are microtubule dependent and perhaps sensitive to microgravity. The NASA Single Loop for Cell Culture (SLCC) for culturing and observing microorganisms permits inexpensive, low labor in-space experiments. We propose to send up to the International Space Station diatom cultures of the three diatom species whose genomes are being sequenced, plus the giant diatoms of Antarctica (up to 2 mm diameter for a single cell) and the unique colonial diatom, Bacillaria paradoxa. Bacillaria cells move against each other in partial synchrony, like a sliding deck of cards, by a microfluidics mechanism. Will normal diatoms have aberrant pattern and shape or motility compared to ground controls? The generation time is typically one day, so that many generations may be examined from one flight. Rapid, directed evolution may be possible running the SLCC as a compustat. The shell shapes and patterns are preserved in hard silica, so that the progress of normal and aberrant morphogenesis may be followed by drying samples on a moving filter paper "diatom tape recorder". With a biodiversity of 100,000 distinct species, diatom nanotechnology may offer a compact and portable nanotechnology toolkit for exploration anywhere.
