Abstract

A high-and-flat efficiency moderated neutron detection array of 3He counters has been recently developed for photoneutron cross section measurements at the future ELI-NP gamma-ray beam source. We have designed a three rings geometry of 31 counters with a ˜37% efficiency flat within 5% in the 10 keV to 5 MeV neutron energy interval. A commissioning experiment was performed using proton beams delivered by the 9 MV Tandem accelerator of IFIN-HH. We measured the neutron production cross sections for proton induced reactions on nat Cu and 27Al. The (p, xn) reactions on nat Cu were investigated in the 4.5 MeV to 14 MeV proton energy range with 250 keV steps, using pulsed and continuous proton beams. The low energy measurements below 10 MeV served to validate the detection efficiency calibration against well-known natCu(p, n) cross sections. The 27Al(p, n) reaction was investigated in the 5.8 MeV to 6.75 MeV energy range with 5 keV steps. Preliminary cross section results are here compared with preceding data.

Abstract

Correlations between the behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy, the neutron skins, and the percentage of energy-weighted sum rule (EWSR) exhausted by the Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) in 68Ni and 132Sn have been investigated by using different Random Phase Approximation (RPA) models for the dipole response, based on a representative set of Skyrme effective forces plus meson-exchange effective Lagrangians. A comparison with the experimental data has allowed us to constrain the value of the derivative of the symmetry energy at saturation. Abstract

In recent years, a number of both theoretical and experimental investigations have been performed focusing on the zirconium isotopic chain. In particular, state-of-the-art Monte Carlo shell-model calculations predict shape coexistence in these isotopes. In this context, the 94Zr nucleus, which is believed to possess a nearly spherical ground state, is particularly interesting since the purported deformed structure is basedon the low-lying 02+ state, making it amenable for detailed study. In order to provide definitive conclusionson the shapes of the low-lying states, two complementary experiments to study 94Zr by means of low-energy Coulomb excitation were performed. This data will allow the quadrupole moments of the 21,2+ levels to be extracted as well as for the deformation parameters of the 01,2+ states to be determined and, thus, definitive conclusions to be drawn on the role of shape coexistence in this nucleus for the first time. The first experiment was performed at the INFN Legnaro National Laboratory with the GALILEO-SPIDER setup, which, for the first time, was coupled with 6 lanthanum bromide scintillators (LaBr3:Ce) in order to maximize the γ-ray detection effciency. The second experiment was performed at the Maier-Leibnitz Laboratory (MLL) in Munich and used a Q3D magnetic spectrograph to detect the scattered 12C ions following Coulomb excitation of 94Zr targets.

Abstract

We report the validation in an extended energy range (80 keV– $\simeq 16$ MeV) of the GAMMA detector, a high-dynamic range, high-resolution, gamma-ray spectrometer for nuclear physics applications based on a 3 co-doped lanthanum bromide (LaBr3:Ce:Sr) crystal (73 ph/keV conversion efficiency, 25 ns decay time) coupled to 144 NUV-HD silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). The detector shows state-of-the-art energy resolution along the entire range thanks to the automatic gain switching feature [adaptive gain control (AGC)] of the custom application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) employed in the system. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that SiPMs have been used to measure such high energy together with a wide dynamic range and excellent energy resolution (2.7% at 662 keV). In addition, the pixelated nature of the SiPMs detectors, combined with machine learning (ML) algorithms, can be exploited to reconstruct the position of the first interaction of the gamma rays inside the scintillation crystal. Previous measurements with a 137Cs collimated source have achieved a spatial resolution better than 2 cm. This performance in position sensitivity has been used to compensate for the relativistic Doppler broadening effects of gamma rays at 15.110(3) MeV emitted by a carbon nucleus moving at relativistic speed (v/c $\simeq ~0.05$ ) resulting from a boron-on-deuterium reaction, improving the FWHM resolution of the peak by 15%, which is in agreement with the theoretical expectation.

14. PARIS White Book

Abstract

PARIS is a collaborative international project (http://paris.ifj.edu.pl) to construct and operate a novel gamma-ray calorimeter, which profits wholly or in part from employment of novel, advanced scintillator materials, such as Lanthanum Bromide, and which should have performances superior to any other existing scintillator calorimeter. In fact, PARIS is eminently portable and could be used at different international facilities using both stable or radioactive beams. The present report, the PARIS White Book, is intended to provide a general description of the performances of the PARIS array, of the different laboratories which could, in the next years, host it and of the physics cases that can be addressed by the PARIS array. The presented physics cases are obviously not exhaustive. They simply give some examples where the physical information, provided by the PARIS array, is understood to be the key point for the success of the measurement. As the physics cases will also depend on the detector arrays which will be coupled to PARIS in the future years, and on the beams (stable or radioactive) provided by the hosting laboratory, this list of possible experiments is expected to increase with the years. It is the intention of this White Book to support the collaboration and help to decide on the future PARIS campaigns, as well as on its promising enhancement to 4π.

Abstract

In heavy ion reactions, in the case of N/Z asymmetry between projectile and target, the process leading to complete fusion is expected to produce pre-equilibrium dipole γ-ray emission. It is generated during the charge equilibration process and it is known as Dynamical Dipole. A new measurement of the dynamical dipole emission was performed by studying 16O + 116Sn at 12 MeV/u. These data, together with those measured at 8.1 MeV/u and 15.6 MeV/u for the same reaction, provide the dependence on the Dynamical Dipole total emission yield with beam energy and they can be compared with theoretical expectations. The experimental results show a weak increase of the Dynamical Dipole total yield with beam energies and are in agreement with the prediction of a theoretical model based on the Boltzmann–Nordheim–Vlasov (BNV) approach. The measured trend with beam energy does not confirm the rise and fall behavior previously reported for the same fused compound but with a much higher dipole moment.

Abstract

A Coulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of 42Ca was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. γ rays from excited states in 42Ca were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in 42Ca, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 2+ 1 and 2+ 2 states, were determined using the least-squares code GOSIA. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 0+ 1,2 and 2+ 1,2 states, as well as triaxiality for 0+ 1,2 states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in 42Ca. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in 42Ca.

Abstract

MariX (Multidisciplinary advanced research infra-structure with X-rays) is a joint project of INFN and University of Milan, aiming at developing a twin X-ray Source of advanced characteristics for the future Sci-entific Campus of the University of Milan. Presently in its design study phase, it will be built in the post Expo area located in north-west Milan district. The first component of the X-source MariX is BriXS (Bright and compact X-ray Source), a Compton X-ray source based on superconducting cavities technology for the electron beam with energy recirculation and on a laser system in Fabry-Pérot cavity at a repetition rate of 100 MHz, producing 20-180 keV radiation for medical applications. The BriXS accelerator is also serving as injector of a 3.8 GeV superconductive linac, driving a X-ray FEL at 1 MHz, for providing coherent, moderate flux radiation at 0.3-10 KeV at 1 MHz. Abstract

The Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics, one of the three pillars of the Extreme Light Infrastructure Pan-European initiative, is a new large scale facility dedicated to nuclear physics with extreme electromagnetic fields. ELI-NP will host two 10 PW lasers and a very brilliant Gamma beam system with unprecedented intensity and energy resolution parameters. We propose to perform photon induced nuclear reactions using the very brilliant γ-ray beams provided by the Gamma beam system to examine in detail the photon absorption process and its decay modes. Abstract

An enhanced probability for low-energy γ-emission (upbend, Eγ <3 MeV) at high excitation energies has been observed for several light and mediummass nuclei close to the valley of stability. Also the M1 scissors mode seen in deformed nuclei increases the γ-decay probability for low-energy γ-rays (Eγ ≈ 2-3 MeV). These phenomena, if present in neutron-rich nuclei, have the potential to increase radiative neutron-capture rates relevant for the r-process. Abstract

An unexpected enhancement in the low-energy part of the γ-strength function for light and medium-mass nuclei has been discovered at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory. This enhancement could lead to an increase in the neutron-capture rates up to two orders of magnitude for very exotic, neutron-rich nuclei. Abstract

In the recent years LaBr3:Ce crystals started a new generation of high performing scintillator detectors. In fact, a large number of different, new and promising scintillators are now becoming commercially available, as for example CeBr3, CLYC, SrI2. Some others, like GYGAG:Ce, CLLB, CLLC, will be available in the near future. The CLYC crystal enriched with 6Li provides extremely high efficiency for thermal neutron identification and detection with performances comparable to ³He tubes. The CLYC enriched with 7Li can provide the direct measurement of the neutron kinetic energy from the energy pulse signal. The most recent R&D activity shows that 'co-doping' technique has the effect to improve the crystal proportionality and the mechanical properties thus significantly increasing the reliability and energy resolution of LaBr3;Ce and CeBr3 scintillators. Such a new generation of detectors can be the backbone for the detectors array of the future accelerator facilities as for example ELI-NP which will provide very intense high-energy γ-ray beam with very low bandwidth. Abstract

This work describes the development of a gamma detector based on silicon drift detectors (SDDs) to read out large \LaBr_3:\Ce scintillators for gamma-ray astronomy applications, within an activity supported by the European Space Agency (ESA). SDDs, characterized by high quantum efficiency and low electronic noise, when coupled with a scintillator are good candidates for gamma-ray spectroscopy applications in a wide energy range, e.g., from 150 keV to 15 MeV. The gamma-ray detector prototype presented here is composed of a 2^\prime^\prime\times2^\prime^\prime \LaBr_3:\Ce scintillator coupled with four SDD arrays arranged in a 2 \times 2 format (a total of 36 SDDs). This detection system is operated with custom readout application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and a data acquisition (DAQ) system. With this prototype gamma-camera, an energy resolution of 3.4% FWHM at 662 keV has been measured. Spectroscopy measurements have been carried out between 300 keV and 1800 keV and the achieved results are consistent with the electronic noise of the SDD technology. In this work, we report on the SDD based detection head’s design, its X-ray characterization, readout electronics, experimental setups and gamma-ray spectroscopy results.
