Abstract

Ab initio Hartree-Fock and Moller-Plesset calculations are performed on the reduction chemistry of (Ni(salophen)). Results show that no oxidation state change follows the addition of two electrons to the system because no localized-on-nickel and low-energy orbitals are present to accomodate them. Instead, the two electrons form a new C-C bond which can be broken to give the original product. Moreover, the Ni2+ functions as a shield among the negative charges of the ligand during the redox reaction.

Abstract

Many-body Green’s-function calculations which employ large configurational expansions and which are accurate to third and fourth order of perturbation theory are reported for the valence ionic states of HCl. Large polarized basis sets including Rydberg functions s-, p-, and d-type symmetries have been used. Third-order calculations are sufficient in the outer valence region, but in the inner valence region where the complete breakdown of the one-particle picture of ionization is observed a fourth-order theory is necessary in conjunction with large basis sets. The synchrotron and x-ray excited spectra can be assigned nearly up to the double-ionization threshold in a very satisfactory way. No indication of strong outer valence satellite lines is found. 9. An (e, 2e) spectroscopic investigation and a Green's function study of the ionization of fluoroethylene

Abstract

Experimental binary (e, 2e) energy spectra of fluoroethylene are presented and compared with Green's function calculations. Electron momentum distributions of outer and inner valence orbitals have also been measured and are discussed in conjunction with the theoretical results. The information obtained allows a full analysis of the molecular orbital symmetry and of the nature of the chemical bond in fluoroethylene.

14. A theoretical investigation of the complete valence ionization spectra of cyanamide, isocyanamide, diazirine and diazomethane

Abstract

The ionization potentials of the four isomeric molecules cyanamide, isocyanamide, diazirine and diazomethane are computed in the entire valence region by the Green function method. The Koopmans' ordering of the one-electron level is confirmed. The computations permit to unambiguously assign the photoelectron spectra of cyanamide and diazirine, and to reassign part of the spectrum of diazomethane. For isocyanamide, for which a PES spectrum is not available, the results of the computations are believed to represent a good approximation to the true ionization potentials. The usual breakdown phenomenon of the molecular-orbital model of ionization in the inner valence shell is observed and discussed. A strong hole-mixing effect is found in the isocyanamide molecule.

Abstract

Nell’opera vastissima e poliedrica di Max Weber “ragione”, “razionalismo”, “razionalizzazione” si dicono davvero in molti modi. Ogni studioso serio di questo autore, ogni studioso cioè che sia davvero disposto ad impegnarsi nel difficile ma non eludibile “corpo a corpo” con il dettato weberiano, sa bene che, quando si incontrano i suddetti termini e i loro derivati, occorre anzitutto chiedersi in che senso essi vengano adoperati nell’ambito specifico del contesto argomentativo entro il quale li si incontra. Il saggio tratta in linea generale del problema ed espone poi le primissime stazioni di un più ampio itinerario di ricerca incentrato sull'esame, in questa prospettiva, del complicato tessuto argomentativo di "Religiöse Gemeinschaften", un testo del Nachlaß weberiano che è fra i più ricchi e importanti di quelli appartenenti alla fase di stesura prebellica di "Economia e società".

Abstract

Ragione” e “razionalità” sono oggi nozioni problematiche: considerate a lungo, nella storia del pensiero occidentale, come tratti distintivi dell’uomo e della civiltà euro-americana, da un certo punto in poi sono state messe in discussione e lacerate dalla crisi e dal malessere di quest’ultima. Alla luce delle controversie più recenti e delle riflessioni sul tema sviluppate nella prima metà del Novecento, questo libro si propone di riaprire la querelle sulla ratio con l’intento di mettere in luce – attraverso una serie di “casi di studio” – la grana sottile dei molteplici significati e usi della nozione di ragione, ma anche di interrogarsi sulle differenti “epoche” della ragione provando a ricostruirne la “storia”. I saggi contenuti in questo volume, dunque, contestualizzano e analizzano le accezioni e le ambiguità del termine ratio e dei suoi derivati nel quadro delle molteplici discussioni che ne hanno ritmato la storia a partire dalla prima modernità, quando il concetto assunse nuove configurazioni rispetto agli usi attestati nel pensiero antico e medioevale, sino al dibattito contemporaneo.
