Abstract

The prevalence of depression and substance use changed significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study explored the association between the use of psychoactive substances and depression in Brazilian university students. This cross-sectional study was conducted between 2021 and 2022. A sample of 1271 students were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST). Hierarchical multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the association between tobacco use, alcohol consumption, illicit substance use, and depression. Among the participants, 424 (33.4%; 95%CI 30.7–36) screened positive for depression (PHQ-9 ≥ 10). Alcohol was the most consumed substance. Recent use of illicit substances was associated with depression (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.59; CI 1.02–2.50). The pattern of moderate or high-risk tobacco use (aOR 2.11; CI 1.31–3.42), alcohol use (aOR 3.40; CI 2.29–5.06), and illicit substances (aOR 1.82; CI 1.15–2.89) were associated with higher chances of depression in adjusted models. Findings highlight the importance of implementing support for mental health among university students. These policies are crucial for addressing maladaptive behaviors, such as substance use, and for mitigating psychological distress, such as depression, which has been exacerbated during the pandemic. Abstract

Background and Purpose: The Langer Mindfulness Scale (LMS) is distinguished from other mindfulness scales by its dimensions, which are closely related to the awareness and experience of novelty, and by being a scale derived from a cognitive perspective of information processing. There are no mindfulness instruments of this type available in Brazil. Therefore, this study aimed to carry out a translation and cultural adaptation of the LMS into Brazilian Portuguese and to validate and assess the internal consistency and convergent construct validity of the translated instrument. Methods: The study had two distinct stages: (a) translation and cultural adaptation of the LMS into Brazilian Portuguese and (b) validation of the adapted instrument using a sample of 543 participants. Results: The Brazilian version of the LMS demonstrated acceptable internal consistency, with confirmatory factor analysis supporting the original four-factor model. Correlations between LMS, and the Five Facets of Mindfulness Questionnaire and the Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale were statistically significant and in the expected directions. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the Brazilian version of LMS, with its four dimensions, presents acceptable psychometric properties and seems to be a reliable and valid instrument for assessing the state of mindfulness in a Brazilian cultural context. Abstract

Introduction: Psychoactive substances abuse is considered a problematic social factor due its likelihood to cause harmful, self-destructive behaviors to the subjects and the overall society.Stress in an individual's early life may also be a contributing factor to substance abuse as well as suicide attempts. There is a lack of studies examining these factors in people with substance-use disorder. Aim: to identify the relationship between early-life stress and suicide attempts in drug-dependent adults. Methods: This is a predictive correlational study with a cross-sectional approach. The convenience sample consisted of 105 individuals treated at an outpatient unit for addiction treatment. The participants were assessed using the Mini-international Neuropsychiatric Interview, a Childhood Trauma Questionnaire to measure the severity of the different types of early life stress; the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation was also used. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics through univariate and multivariate logistic regression.Results: The analyzed sample included 33 (31.4%) individuals who attempted suicide and were significantly more likely to suffer from emotional, physical, or sexual abuse than those who had never attempted suicide (p <0,05).Conclusions: Different forms of early-life stress are related to attempted suicide in people with substance-use disorder. Abstract

Objective: To assess the quality of sleep on medical students, in addition to demonstrating the associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study carried out with students in the fifth and sixth year of the medical school, through the application of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the results analyzed by the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) program to establish correlations between sleep quality and the independent variables analyzed using Pearson's chi-square test. Results: the prevalence of poor sleep quality was 63.6%. Poor sleep quality was found to be associated with female gender, memory failure, and sleep deprivation. Conclusion: Most students had poor sleep quality, which may be significantly affecting their health and educational performance, evidencing the importance of educational measures related to hygiene and sleep routine for this population. Objetivo: Evaluar la calidad del sueño en estudiantes de medicina, además de demostrar los factores asociados. Métodos: Estudio transversal realizado con estudiantes de quinto y sexto año de la facultad de medicina, mediante la aplicación del Índice de Calidad del Sueño de Pittsburgh (PSQI) y los resultados analizados por el programa Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) para establecer correlaciones entre la calidad del sueño y las variables independientes analizadas mediante la prueba chi-cuadrado de Pearson. Resultados: la prevalencia de mala calidad del sueño fue del 63,6%. Se encontró que la mala calidad del sueño estaba asociada con el sexo femenino, la falta de memoria y la privación del sueño. Conclusión: La mayoría de los estudiantes presentaba mala calidad del sueño, lo que puede estar afectando significativamente su salud y desempeño educativo, evidenciando la importancia de las medidas educativas relacionadas con la higiene y la rutina del sueño para esta población. Conclusão: A maioria do acadêmicos apresentou qualidade de sono ruim, o que pode estar afetando significativamente sua saúde e o desempenho educacional, evidenciando a importância de medidas educativas relacionadas à higiene e rotina de sono para esta população.

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the factors that influence the quality of life (QOL) and the level of hopelessness of family members of chemical dependents (DQ). Method: 104 relatives of dependents undergoing treatment participated. A sociodemographic profile form, the Brazilian Economic Classification Criterion (CCEB), the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-bref) were used. Results: there was a predominance of a moderate level of hopelessness and impaired QOL, especially in the environment domain. Being single, having a lower monthly income, having a family member who uses drugs for more than five years, not being in the job market, having three or fewer people living in residence, not having their transport and being the user's parent negatively influence the QOL. Illiterate and low-income family members had more hopelessness. Conclusion: sociodemographic characteristics influence QOL and the level of hopelessness and it is important to implement policies that improve this data to obtain better QoL and hopelessness rates. Objetivo: analizar los factores que influyen en la calidad de vida (QOL) y el nivel de desesperanza de los miembros de la familia de los dependientes químicos (DQ). Método: participaron 104 familiares de dependientes sometidos a tratamiento. Se utilizó un formulario de perfil sociodemográfico, el Criterio de Clasificación Económica de Brasil (CCEB), la Escala de desesperanza de Beck (BHS) y la Calidad de vida de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (WHOQOL-bref). Resultados: predominó un nivel moderado de desesperanza y una calidad de vida deteriorada, especialmente en el ámbito del medio ambiente. Ser soltero, tener un ingreso mensual más bajo, tener un miembro de la familia que usa drogas por más de cinco años, no estar en el mercado laboral, tener tres o menos personas viviendo en la residencia, no tener su transporte y ser el padre del usuario influye negativamente en QOL. Los familiares analfabetos y de bajos ingresos tenían más desesperanza. Conclusión: las características sociodemográficas influyen en la calidad de vida y el nivel de desesperanza y es importante implementar políticas que mejoren estos datos para obtener mejores tasas de calidad de vida y desesperanza. Objetivo: analisar os fatores que influenciam a qualidade de vida (QV) e o nível de desesperança de familiares de dependentes químicos (DQ). Método: participaram 104 familiares de dependentes em tratamento. Utilizou-se uma ficha de perfil sociodemográfico, o Critério de Classificação Econômica do Brasil (CCEB), a Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) e o World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-bref). Resultados: constatou-se a predominância do nível moderado de desesperança e QV comprometida, principalmente no domínio meio ambiente. Estar solteiro, possuir menor renda mensal, ter familiar que usa drogas por mais de cinco anos, não estar inserido no mercado de trabalho, ter três ou menos pessoas morando na residência, não ter transporte próprio e ser pai ou mãe do usuário influenciam negativamente a QV. Familiares analfabetos e com menor renda tiveram mais desesperança. Conclusão: características sociodemográficas influenciam a QV e o nível de desesperança sendo importante implementar políticas que melhorem esses dados para obter melhores índices de QV e desesperança.

Abstract

Objective: to investigate excessive daytime sleepiness prevalence among nursing technicians and the association with sleep quality and memory., Methods: a cross-sectional, inferential study, carried out in a hospital unit in the state of Goiás between December 2020 and January 2021. Assessments were carried out using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire, instruments validated for the Brazilian context. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyzes were performed., Results: the sample consisted of 189 nursing technicians with a 40.9% excessive daytime sleepiness prevalence. In multivariate models, excessive daytime sleepiness was not associated with sleep quality, however there was a significant association with overall memory failures., Conclusions: study results demonstrate a high excessive daytime sleepiness occurrence, an association with overall memory failures and the need for psychosocial interventions for nursing technicians.

Objective: To identify risk factors for mental health in the population in times of COVID-19 through the analysis of levels of socio-cognitive mindfulness and perception of stress in individuals., Method: This is a cross-sectional observational study with a quantitative approach, carried out through online data collection using the Perceived Stress Scale and the Langer Mindfulness Scale in a sample of 955 individuals from different regions of Brazil., Results: Women, younger people and individuals with low socioeconomic conditions had higher levels of perceived stress; on the other hand, older men and individuals with high socioeconomic status had higher levels of mindfulness., Conclusion: Socio-cognitive mindfulness was not a protective factor for perceived stress in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
